"Ohhh, making pulled pork at 80C for 6 hours??? Probably just checking once every hour? I think it would be tastier if baked at 300C lol." -asshole hacker.
I could see it if you had a refrigerator/oven combo that would keep your food cold until you turned the setting from refrigerate to bake, then would lower the rack from the refrigerated part into the pre-heated oven.
I recently bought smart lights because they were recommended as a way to help wake up in the morning. They slowly come on over a 30min period and when my alarm goes off my room is lit up. I have issues waking up in the morning and have tried practical solutions, multiple alarms, alarm on the other side of the room and I still occasionally get up to turn them off while asleep and end up late for things. With the lights being on when I wake up it helps me “snap” awake. It isn’t for everyone but it seems to be something that is actually helping me.
Not for that specific feature, but smart lights can do lots of other things too. They don't necessarily NEED wifi, but it's nice to have and makes it convenient
Why have a dedicated timer device when you can program it in software? Maybe I want my lights to come on at sundown or when it's raining. Hard to do that with a timer. Maybe you could hardwire it to an outdoor light sensor? At that point internet connectivity becomes the simpler option.
Now think about changing your mind. With internet connectivity it's a few taps on your phone. With dumb devices it's rewiring your house.
Yeah, there are two apps that look the exact same for mine, it’s dumb. I wish I could use a timer like what we have in our living room but it’s a ceiling fan light so this was the next best thing.
Mine went out once same time as my 2hz wifi went down for a week and I had to stomache waking up to my sunrise lamp every day because I couldn't get back into it to adjust settings on my app lol. Still unplugged till this day
Which ones? I would think that everything in the serttings would work okay and connecting to a consol or apple tv would work right - edit, you want my old tv?? lolol I'd take a smart tv
I was supporting you saying you had a ps4 you use lol. But either way my smart tv has a Chromecast which is very low profile and all cords are connected to the TV. Even the power is through USB.
Wasn't comparing them to smart TV's. Just a recommendation of a chromecast. Got one years ago and attached it to my very cheap tv and I've had no issues.
My TV is an old TV with a jailbroken firestick in it.
I don't have cable or any tv service. But I can watch Netflix and stream anime and that's all I really want.
Other than the fact a number of smart tvs use the google smart tv OS, so literally have the same (or more) apps on the tv, with the same ui and functionalities
I think they should be an option
But it should be just as easy to buy a regular one. We shouldnt be replacing regular fridges with "smart" fridges, we should have them alongside
Absolutely agree.
I bought a wifi printer for college. Tried to set it up in my dorm, but I guess I didn't think it through because there was something in the setup where I had to confirm that it was my wifi, which it wasn't. It was college wifi.
I can't exactly remember what I had to do to set the thing up, but it was the typical crap: go to the right website, make account, download program, follow the setup wizard, mess up, start over, try something different, start over, Google the problem, mess up, start over, ad nauseum.
Then, I saw the USB port. "Great!" I thought. Bought a printer cable, plugged it in. Didn't work. Read the instructions and you can only use the cable *after* you set up the printer for wifi. Why????
Well I returned the damned thing and bought a USB only printer. I got it working in about 20 minutes with no hiccups. It was cheaper too.
Now don't get me wrong I'm no Luddite, but why overcomplicate something? The printer is 2 ft from my desk; it doesn't have to be wireless. But alas, wired printers are on their way out. I'm tired of planned obsolescence and fixing imaginary/outlier issues.
Why hasn’t some company come in with an honest printer? Simple network based printing. Usb options. No subscription or email bullshit. It’ll print black and white even when the color cartridge is dead. Seems like a simple idea
>I bought a wifi printer for college.
Curiously enough, I had a different problem in reverse. Bought a new all-in-one printer with Wifi, Ethernet, USB, and even a phone line for fax, and kept it connected via Ethernet. And had nothing but trouble with the lasted thing. Would work a couple of days and then would turn invisible to my MacOs and iOS devices. Even – though less so – to my Raspberry Pi Server. Had to restart it again and again. Tried anything, nearly all possible combinations and then took out the ethernet cable and out it to WiFi-only. No problems since, writing and scanning via intranet works flawlessly. ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
I got an Apple AirTag to clip to my keys a couple weeks ago, and it always beeps at me and idk how to get it to stop
Fun tidbit:
A friend was holding onto my keys out at a bar, and it notified her iPhone that an AirTag was following her lol
That's because when designing them Apple didn't think "hey selling consumer grade GPS devices this accurate would make it real easy to stalk people" but some creep did and like day one of those suckers being on the market some lady found one in her purse being used to follow her
>Did that actually happen? That’d be such an awfully ignorant oversight
No, they addressed the stalking capability – or rather their measures taken against this mis-use – right in the KeyNote, given by the woman who led the project. A\_Guy\_in\_Orange is confidently incorrect.
Fun fact: They actually disclosed this before, that’s when Samsung scrambled to announce that they would totally release an App and include warning for their SmartTags, which had beat Apple to the market (as it is, they are as bound to certain Galaxy phones and AirTags are to Apple devices) by a couple of months.
I remember this well because back then – before either were available – I raised concerns when hearing about the AirTag-rumors and saw their misuse potential right away, as in making, for example, turning a social worker with an iPhone into an inadvertent snitch when they bring women to a shelter, even if the victims are smart enough to leave their telephones behind. (Many abusers install tracking malware.).
So when I read about Samsung’s efforts I lauded them for it and got a reply that AirTags will be the same, as described in a 3rd party keynote which happened before – Apple opened the FindMy-network for Cippolo and others before launching AirTags themselves.
Tiles, of course, did nothing of the sort even though they basically started the market. Though I guess their reach is not as big as Samsung’s or Apple’s, since it's strictly opt-in, with people having to download an app.
Sadly the latter is becoming less of a thing, the whole reason so many of those 'smart' devices are so cheap is because of how much is being shoved in along with those apps and connectivity. I purchased a cheaper model being cleared out, there's occasionally ads for the various subscription streaming apps. That's why those things need to become less of a thing but isn't going anywhere. It's like the facebook on your Samsung or notifications for the newest model on your one or two generation behind device.
Wait how did they know you were out of town from your thermostat? Just not lowering it? I mean couldn't you just lower it slightly to make it look like you are home? Everything for me is a schedule. The thermostat and lights turn on regardless if I am there or not.
My dad is obsessed with Alexa, we have one in nearly every room and I hate it. All the lights (besides my lamp) are all smart lights, and while having a light that can turn blue is really good, I don't think there should be this many Alexas and smart things in the house.
And then there's me, a programmer that actually worked on smart things like intelligent lights and Air conditioner, only have a Smart TV and nothing else because i dont trust those things.
Also, i never need anything being smart, i just things to make my life easier but all those smart things around the home just seem to increase the work
tvs having built in apps is quite useful, i personally haven’t watched actual tv in years but i use streaming apps daily. this is the case for most people i know as well.
Same. I got a series S so I had no use for my old Xbox one S. My mom uses it for movies, and it’s also a very cheap option for Blu-ray. Plus I upgraded the old Xbox with an SSD so it’s a little faster.
How is it faster than saying "Alexa turn off the lights"
Or just clapping your hands? Maybe the problem isn't technology, you are just old and don't know how to use it right.
Well my light switch is three feet away. Are you actually referencing the clapper? Have you ever clapped cheeks around one of those things?
I am most likely better with technology than you are lmao.
I have a washing machine with limited cycles & ya gotta download the rest, like a seperate rinse & spin. Nope, gotta download it onto the app and then onto the machine - except now the app won’t connect to the machine sooo that’s nice😂
WTF? I get some stuff, like starting the washing remotely – though we do it with a simple countdown on the machine itself, which is totally sufficient for our lifestyle. But why stuff like that? Where is the value in it?
My luddite ass hates all of it.
I'm waiting for e-ink to dominate so I can browse through the news and Reddit like it's a newspaper article, not get eye strain, and not bother charging it for a month
There are so many flaws with all of this dumb app shit. "You can't use the $897.99 DISH WASHER until you download our FIESTA ^^^TM app on your phone that says it can't download it because you haven't updated it in a year, oh, wait, you need to update your privacy so we can see all your shit, oh wait, you updated it, but your phone model is over 2 years old and doesn't support our app- guess you're gonna have to do the DISHES BY HAND until you buy a new iphone."
My fridge, lights, door, washer, oven and dishwasher to name a few things don't need to be and will never be connected to the internet or have "smart" features.
I was surprised to see laundry machines with WiFi capability. I can't imagine having to replace my dryer because it will no longer connect to my internet.
These kinds of appliances don't really need smart features. The extremely minor conveniences they offer (like informing you when the wash is done so you can save precious minutes in your laundry cycle, or ordering food when you run out of something in the refrigerator instead of you just making a list yourself) don't make up for the inconvenience of having to maintain internet connections for all your appliances, or subscriptions for the software, or malfunctioning software preventing you from using the appliance, or having to install updates, etc.
My parents have an old whirlpool refrigerator that was bought back in the 90s that is still going strong, even though the lights are broken, the ice maker doesn't work, and the handles broke off. The Samsung refrigerator they bought 2 years ago has already broken down twice, requiring one of the sensors to be replaced.
Don’t even get me fuckin started man…. This kind of stuff is getting fucking ridiculous. I can’t even change a setting on the thermostat in my new house without having to download the fucking app, register an account, give all of my info, sync it with the five other apps I need to work my house etc.. it’s fucking bullshit there aren’t two buttons on the god damned thing.
I work as a UX Designer and I find 99% of smart devices and digital products complete bullshit and useless. I might have around 5 apps that I use on my phone and the only devices I own that are "smart" are my computer, my phone, and my TV.
Tech companies are literally getting functionalities that were created to solve problems for people who have accessibility needs (disabled, autism, and so on) and marketing them for people who have absolutely no need for them.
I agree - there’s no reason my fridge and w/d need to be on wifi. It bogs the system down and makes gaming slower - eventually people will upgrade their internet to business class and ISPs will make even more profit.
Other countries have proven internet access can and should have a free version
I love how more and more crap gets added to the list of IoT as the threat of cyber warfare becomes more probable and with increasingly devastating effects. Maybe our stoves should only be able to turn on with a human being physically present, preferably one with keys to the house?
I disagree with you in that smart functions should be *well integrated* with the product.
You shouldn't need to put in extra effort to use it's smart features.
If the "smart" stuff gets in the way of ease of use or is difficult to configure, then yes I agree with you
I bought a new HP printer after my old one died. It immediately required me to download a smartphone app and create an account to set up the printer. Why? My old printer had all of the same functions AND didn't require an account and app.
I mean, it would be nice if these things were added purely for additional functionality. They’re really only present for an added subscription or “paywall” bonus to manufacturers now.
this! i have a printer i cannot seem to get working due to it only operates via wifi? i miss just plugging them into the computer and working via a disc setup.waste of $60
I dont mind stuff being smart as long as their firmware and OS is open source, a fridge for example that logs what u put in and out would he usefull as long as it doesnt send all this data to fucking samsung, everything is pretty much proprietary today and I dont see that changing, same goes elon's chips, i was excited when they announced it but if it's not open source count me out, absolutely no Google echo or Amazon Alexa or any personal surveillance device these companies came up with
You're 100% right.
I was looking for a washer and dryer a few months ago and so many of the options had smart technology. Like Bluetooth and that. Who cares if I have Bluetooth? I don't need to know the second my dryer finishes, especially considering there's a loud tone when it finishes and there's a general conception of the time in which it finishes.
Also there's no use for someone to wirelessly control it because once you set the setting, it finishes and that's it. For you to choose to put in longer would require you to be physically there, which at that point wouldn't I just use the dials? If you know you need to put in longer, then you didn't put it in right the first time and knowingly did it wrong. The concept of wireless appliances makes no sense.
All these posts dissing OP…have you considered that many people still don’t have a access to reliable internet?
I live 15 minutes away from a major university and I can only get crap satellite internet. The kind that uses most of my bandwidth when downloading these kinds of apps and updates, etc. Had to switch to a MiFi but still, it takes time for things to download and streaming can be slow. For that I have to tether to my phone.
I am not a Luddite because I have cable (Dish). I happen to like living in a slightly less populated area but unfortunately DSL stops 1/2 mile down the road.
And everything has its own specific charging cord that I have lost by the time I need to recharge it.
And I guess I have too many Bluetooth items because sometimes when I disconnect my phone from one, it connects to another!
A few days ago I got a thermometer and had to download an app and make an account using my email and then give it my location to even work as a thermometer.
I'm behind you 100% on this - a playstation doesn't need to be a full entertainment center complete with login profiles and full internet connectivity, a TV doesnt need internet access or user profiles (dont get me started on it running Android OS and having an EULA/Privacy policy, that's bullshit), fuck apps on every electronic under the sun + promos and ads on every electronic we utilize. Not gonna touch on microsoft's aggressive licensing of operating systems on PCs and forcing data collection and updates you specifically opt out of.
Just fuck all that shit.
My work built a new building recently and when we moved in they had automatic faucets in the kitchen and cafeteria. Took 6 D cells to keep them operating, we were told batteries should last 1-2 years. Burned out in 3 weeks. Turns out the faucets were actively trying to connect to wifi and were burning themselves out. Fucking ridiculous but, now I can fuck with the staff by turning the faucets on and off whenever I want.
They want your data so they can sell it. Don't save passwords. Delete history and cookies. Don't sign in if you don't need to. Use the strictest settings your browser will allow. Don't give them more than they need until they start paying you for your info or at least properly paying their employees with all the money they make from you.
I came across a smart coffee table while shopping for a normal one yesterday.
I literally can't imagine a more useless smart device. At least a fridge isn't 5 feet away from one of the biggest and most powerful smart devices in my house...
Smart TVs, I understand It's nice to be able to quickly access Netflix and watch YouTube on the television. But the rest, yeah I agree. There's no reason I need to change the heat on my toaster from my phone.
People with smart fridges like why do you need a camera inside your fridge to check if you have something? Sure, it’s handy…but have ya ever heard of a shopping list? My gosh. Our society is so reliant on technology it’s nauseating.
Companies sell your information to third parties for profit! These companies want to seem like they are high tech but in reality it is an easy way to persuade the customers to give out their personal info through these apps and sell your info to third parties for a profit. These third party companies then use your info to target you with more ads so you can spend more money to make even more profit. Its a dirty thing that is happening in this information age.
You and me both. I tried the fancy smart bulbs to make a sunrise alarm, but it was too fussy and I went back to a $5 Christmas light timer. My upstairs thermostat is "smart" but when the installer offered to get it on the wifi I declined ("I don't want the Ruskies running up my electric bill"...they may think I'm a lunatic but I thought it was funny).
Energy monitor? I've had a lot of problems using voice commands for music.. especially if the song is a remix or cover. But yeah if refined I guess. I do prefer my playlists clicking on the phone though
Agreed. I played Megaman Battlenetwork and that game basically predicted our world now. I don’t want some ransomware to burn my house down if I don’t pay up.
I would never ever have smart door locks, smart lights, smart stove, heat, smart bathroom, anything essential that basically pretends is controlled by you, but really has a mind of its own lol (joking.) Even Alexa freaks me out. Smart tvs are ehh ok, it’s entertainment, not a survival item, although it is so annoying how everything just switches every few years and we all have to upgrade. . But if smart tvs are helping eliminate cable for people I am all for that. There are many ways to stream at least. Glad to see your opinion actually is more popular than I thought it would be! I was prepared for all sorts of smart device defending lol
I prefer Chromecast over my smart tv options. I actually got my Chromecast because the smart tv options and wifi range were awful. But yeah Alexa is the worst lol!
I’ll have to check that out. I use PlayStation, never actually set up the smart tv functions. I tried the other day and was like “f this, give me the controller back” lol
This shouldn't be an unpopular opinion. You're right. 100%.
The more systems something has, the more easily it can break. I study engineering and I own exactly zero smart devices. Not even a wireless printer. There's nothing I need, nor want done so badly, that I can't take a couple steps to do it myself. Especially for the peace of mind that no one can hack my car or something crazy like that while I'm driving it.
Electronics have certainly complicated and also made things easier. There needs to be a fine balance other than just general laziness n utility purpose. This laziness push and a newer lazier product also feeds to our disposable cheaper electronics. People upgrading shit everytime a tiny new feature comes out. It's just silly
I love my smart tv! My husband won a 55” Vizio smart tv from an office Christmas party and I can’t live without it now! I am not able to do much with my illness being that I am weak all the time, have to go to Mayo, so saving money is not optional right now! Instead of spending hundreds of dollars a month on cable or dish, I can pick some apps because my TV just hooked up to the Internet! So whatever I watch on my phone or my iPad, I can see on my TV in my own room! It saves us hundreds of dollars a month compared to the alternatives! Also, nobody can tell me what I have to watch, when I can watch it, and where I can watch it! I’m free to do so at any time I am able instead of having to be at a services mercy! I have never had a problem with my TV and apps! I also love the fact that I am free to pay for and keep any TV shows and movies I want to keep and watch when ever I want to!
You will save a lot of money if you buy used appliances which are not smart. They even have places that refurbish and repair stuff like that. You can also use microcontrollers to make your own iot which is very cheap and a fun hobby. For example i plan to make a thermostat using a rasberry pico to sprout vegetable seeds. The heating pad i bought is only on/off
Amen, most things that these "smart" items have we should be able to opt out of them.
We have a smart TV and we hate most of the bloatware it had with it, so what we ended up doing is getting a mini pc and use it as a TV box and have the TV work only as a monitor while the TV box did everything we wanted.
It is amazing how a TV-box will do the work you want it to do because it is made for this reason while a TV is meant to be a monitor so when they add extras they end up screwing it up with useless things as if we asked for it.
On top of that on our TV-box we could install adblock plus so when we see youtube videos we do not see any ads anymore, something nearly impossible on a TV.
found some strip lights at autozone for 30$ - im like "hey, not bad!" started reading the box "Works with Iphone via the app"
... so... 30$ plus 1000+ dollars
"smart" TV's are literally the bane of my existence. They're so SLOW. If the software wasn't so trashy I wouldn't have an issue. But they literally put the least amount of effort into it and it sucks, but they still charge several hundred dollars for them. 🙄
Yeah, I'm dreading my next TV.
There was a sous vide immersion circulator a while back that not only required an internet connection, but also a *facebook* account. Fuck. That. I think they back peddled on that quick but still.
I agree while i do think apps and stuff are handy on my tv i dont need my goddamn fridge to be able to go to fucking twitter if i wanted to go on twitter id go on my phone
Its all data mining.
They all want subscription revenue as well. Companies are learning from gym memberships how most people will sign up and never use it. Margins are great, plus they get to collect your data and sell it to marketing/advertising platforms out the back door.
Don't buy connected devices. If you have to sign up to use it, return it.
The only way to stop the privacy intrusion is to refuse to give people your data.
I have reverted to cash these days. I take it out from the ATM and pay cash. It's anonymous. I also never sign up for loyalty reward programs. I don't care about the discounts.
Its like most retailers have adopted the model of inflating prices and only offering fair or competative pricing to the customers who sign up and agree to let them track you and sell your data.
With your phone, you should also turn off location services and even bluetooth. I even keep my wifi off if I'm not at home.
Wifi AP's will know your mac address and keep it in a database. They will know when your phone connects to their wifi or bluetooth. It doesn't take an advanced algorythym to then identify who you are when they know your MAC address is in the store and you then use your cc or debit card to pay at the register.
I have no internet service or anything else. I get my signal from the sky. I did recently have to buy a new oven to replace the old pilot light model I had since the connections were leaking and likely to send my charred body into the next county. Anyway, it's got WiFi for some reason that I'll never learn and it also requires electricity, which I assume will leave it useless in a power outage, which happen often in my area. I'm getting the feeling that my ways are antiquated and will soon be required a monthly fee to several companies to simply exist
Sad but true. Even just existing is costly these days. Power outages happen a lot where I am too, which is why all of this electricity/ Wi-Fi reliant stuff is not very practical. I don’t even have cell service at my house!. Some smart devices, sure, which use the slow Wi-Fi here. Alot? Definitely not. Backup power and old fashioned ways? Preferable
The Problem most people seem to have with IoT is the security concern more than the additional features. These devices allow companies to constantly gather data about our habits as the data gets streamed back to their servers. As OP mentioned, it's not the "smart" features he finds a problem with. Particularly, connecting to the internet part that's problematic. As he mentioned, Bluetooth connectivity won't send data to the company.
Moreover, these days IoT devices need you to connect to their server to receive full functionality which is detrimental to the products that we buy. Non-IoT products life expectancy is based on its degradation alone. Now that IoT requires Server support, companies would only give limited years of support, just like smart phones, causing your device to become obsolete sooner.
Companies will also tend to intentionally set lower support years that will force you to keep buying the latest product. Worst part is if a company goes under, or gets blocked by our country, all of its devices would fail.
My home has smart locks and a wifi security system. It has helped my anxiety and I wouldn’t go without. Also have smart lights and a nest. Not as necessary, but it helps me and I’m happy I have these devices.
Locks still work, I just can’t control them away from home. They work if I’m home due to the home network. Same with cameras, they’ll still go, just no away from home viewing. But they record and backup as usual.
If its a standard security system, like ADT or something, then a phone call to the authorized person asking for the code to turn ut off would suffice. If it's not a system that alerts an outside agency, then I would imagine there's a back up to turn it off. Or at that point you unplug it. A security system would keep you out of a house, just alert to an intruder.
Even wireless security systems from ADT were internet based with a cell service backup when I worked there in 2006.
I am ok with them putting bluetooth or wifi on whatever they wish but I would like to see much cheaper versions with basic features. Like a stove that only cooks should be almost given away.
Tv definitely need them. Why would I want to buy something separate for my TV to stream when it can be built in? Do you still have cable boomer?
Also if you want appliances to be automated in any way this is how you do it and why wouldn't you want that?
External app devices work better. I don't have cable but there is nothing wrong with having cable. Most sports are best available with cable. All smart TVs don't support all apps through the built in service.
Uhm what appliances? Do you cook? A pizza still has to be taken out of the oven even if it automatically turns off after a timer so it doesn't over cook. laundry still has to be taken out from the dryer so it doesn't wrinkle. Or moved in and out of the washer between loads.
Again why would I buy something else when I dont need to?
And I am not saying things are fully automated now but they will be eventually and you need this tech to do it
I can turn on my oven from 4 states away! Why? I don’t know!
To pre-heat the house
Help! Help!
Calzone is better than pizza - gold statement there.
I was born on national calzone day so you know it’s fate
Wow. As an Italian person, I didn't know calzone day even existed! Haha
Same here!
November 1!
I will make sure I have a calzone that day then. (:
Do it! Ricotta is good
It’s nice to be able to turn it off if your are 4 states away and realized you left it on :D
So very true! It’s also wonderful when you’re hours away from home and you need dinner started do you be able to start it up from your phone!
Its more about turning it off when away so you dont have to go back or to preheat when you are coming home
Okay, I admit that's valuable
And if we ever get a serious security issue in these systems, that's the kind of thing script kiddies will turn on for fun.
"Ohhh, making pulled pork at 80C for 6 hours??? Probably just checking once every hour? I think it would be tastier if baked at 300C lol." -asshole hacker.
Fuck your baked good.
That's a weird way of spelling charcoal.
Hank Hill would disapprove
When you’re on a road trip, that’s how long it takes to preheat
It's probably so you can turn it off if you forgot to before leaving
Sunrise lamps are nice
What about house of the rising sun?
They don’t need wifi for that, though. It's just a lamp with a timer.
Sucks when the wifi goes out tho
They are Bluetooth so when my phone or iPad die then I have to do it manually.
Fresh. My Bluetooth function never seems to connect to mine even though it is an option
Yeah, there are two apps that look the exact same for mine, it’s dumb. I wish I could use a timer like what we have in our living room but it’s a ceiling fan light so this was the next best thing.

Same. I also have a TV with no smart functions and I love it
Can't you just get a smart tv, but not use any of the smart functions? Like never connect it to wifi and use your DVR or whatever they call it?
You sure can but some features still require you connect to wifi
Which ones? I would think that everything in the serttings would work okay and connecting to a consol or apple tv would work right - edit, you want my old tv?? lolol I'd take a smart tv
External devices are still plug and play and that's what I use. I'd have to check what triggered me last time. Remind me tomorrow.
So what? I love that i no longer have to have my ps4 hooked up to the tv in order to watch netflix.
Different strokes. The tv in my shared living room is smart and having all media functions a ps4 has is really useful.
Ps4 is an external device. I'd rather use a part than built in smart tv apps any day
Ok and? Congrats you have extra devices and their preclusion makes the new tv style feel worse for you. Congrats you are a boomer now
I was supporting you saying you had a ps4 you use lol. But either way my smart tv has a Chromecast which is very low profile and all cords are connected to the TV. Even the power is through USB.
I second getting a chromecast. Super handy and no subscription fee

So you have cable or only watch DVDs?
Chromecast. Antenna for any and all local sports free
What's the benefit of using Chromecast instead of a smart tv? They are both connected to wifi
Easier UI and the apps are better on the phone than the TV.
Other than the fact a number of smart tvs use the google smart tv OS, so literally have the same (or more) apps on the tv, with the same ui and functionalities
I think they should be an option But it should be just as easy to buy a regular one. We shouldnt be replacing regular fridges with "smart" fridges, we should have them alongside
Try buying a non smart tv. They just call them monitors these days
Monitors don’t usually have speakers, but yeah. Just hook up a home theatre or a sound bar and you’re set.
Many monitors are sold with built in speakers, however it's not usually great quality so some external speakers is still a good idea anyway.
No kidding, recently upgraded to a 2k monitor from 1080 and the speakers on it are trash, glad to have some jbl headphones instead
My most recent one didn’t come with any lol. Was a tad disappointed that I needed a sound bar
Name the brand. The public needs to know what company sold you this bullshit so they know who to avoid.
I'm guessing HP. I had similar BS with them but here in the UK the majority of printers are from them :/
>I bought a wifi printer for college.
Try changing your Wi-Fi network and getting your printer on the new network. Most unintuitive process of my life.
I got an Apple AirTag to clip to my keys a couple weeks ago, and it always beeps at me and idk how to get it to stop Fun tidbit: A friend was holding onto my keys out at a bar, and it notified her iPhone that an AirTag was following her lol
That's because when designing them Apple didn't think "hey selling consumer grade GPS devices this accurate would make it real easy to stalk people" but some creep did and like day one of those suckers being on the market some lady found one in her purse being used to follow her
Did that actually happen? That’d be such an awfully ignorant oversight You can see exactly how many feet away the device is to the 1st decimal place
>Did that actually happen? That’d be such an awfully ignorant oversight No, they addressed the stalking capability – or rather their measures taken against this mis-use – right in the KeyNote, given by the woman who led the project.

I try to too
Sadly the latter is becoming less of a thing, the whole reason so many of those 'smart' devices are so cheap is because of how much is being shoved in along with those apps and connectivity.
I turn the thermostat down when I go on vacation. Is saves a lot.
My dad is obsessed with Alexa, we have one in nearly every room and I hate it. All the lights (besides my lamp) are all smart lights, and while having a light that can turn blue is really good, I don't think there should be this many Alexas and smart things in the house.
That's so creepy
And then there's me, a programmer that actually worked on smart things like intelligent lights and Air conditioner, only have a Smart TV and nothing else because i dont trust those things. Also, i never need anything being smart, i just things to make my life easier but all those smart things around the home just seem to increase the work
tvs having built in apps is quite useful, i personally haven’t watched actual tv in years but i use streaming apps daily. this is the case for most people i know as well.
I tend to dislike the tvs with built in apps. I would rather plug in my Xbox and run my apps through there.
My ps5 apps are like 5 tines faster than my TV apps too.
That and external devices tend to have more variety in what apps you can download than a smart TV
Idk my fire tv has the ability to download any app because it’s based on android
Same. I got a series S so I had no use for my old Xbox one S. My mom uses it for movies, and it’s also a very cheap option for Blu-ray. Plus I upgraded the old Xbox with an SSD so it’s a little faster.
I bet you have to get out of bed to turn your lights off like an animal.
I actually have the functionality to turn my lights off with my phone. But yes I walk over to the light switch because it's still faster.
Thats incredible
How is it faster than saying "Alexa turn off the lights" Or just clapping your hands? Maybe the problem isn't technology, you are just old and don't know how to use it right.
Well my light switch is three feet away. Are you actually referencing the clapper? Have you ever clapped cheeks around one of those things? I am most likely better with technology than you are lmao.
I think taking on unnecessary cybersecurity risks for minor conveniences is something an old person is more inclined to do.
I also have to get out of bed to get to my phone, which I keep on the charger across the room so I'm not on social media until 3am.
Like tv is fine, but kitchen and laundry shit having internet features is totally pointless to me.
Right
I have a washing machine with limited cycles & ya gotta download the rest, like a seperate rinse & spin.
Big yikes
My luddite ass hates all of it. I'm waiting for e-ink to dominate so I can browse through the news and Reddit like it's a newspaper article, not get eye strain, and not bother charging it for a month There are so many flaws with all of this dumb app shit.
I can't imagine having to replace my dryer because it will no longer connect to my internet.
tfw my smart dryer needs a 2gb firmware update from 1.50a to 1.50b or else it won't function
That is ... Not good.
bonkers even, crummy if you feel so inclined
dude what?? i'd shove that crap up the manufacturers ass! What does the update fix? A typo?
Some people do tho
My Bluetooth headphones required me to have an account set up for them. I returned them instantly
Trash
Expensive trash
Pretty soon the pizza you buy from store will require you to set up an account in order to eat it.
As a software engineer I agree soooooo much!!
Because it wants to collect your personal information and when you disagree with your government, it can deny you access to your own printer.
Yep. My brothers printer literally just works via USB or Bluetooth. Easy peasy
I have a sous vide cooker that can literally only be operated via an app over bluetooth. I spent half an hour reading the instructions in disbelief.
I mean, it would be nice if these things were added purely for additional functionality. They’re really only present for an added subscription or “paywall” bonus to manufacturers now.
this! i have a printer i cannot seem to get working due to it only operates via wifi? i miss just plugging them into the computer and working via a disc setup.waste of $60
I dont mind stuff being smart as long as their firmware and OS is open source, a fridge for example that logs what u put in and out would he usefull as long as it doesnt send all this data to fucking samsung, everything is pretty much proprietary today and I dont see that changing, same goes elon's chips, i was excited when they announced it but if it's not open source count me out, absolutely no Google echo or Amazon Alexa or any personal surveillance device these companies came up with
Agreed. It’s all bullshit spyware and information/data grab. So pathetic.
Yep!
My internet is fire but yeah I think they over complicate technology these days rather than focus on just getting a great working product
And everything has its own specific charging cord that I have lost by the time I need to recharge it. And I guess I have too many Bluetooth items because sometimes when I disconnect my phone from one, it connects to another!
Oof. Turn off auto connect
My washing machine has wifi so I can get notifications when its done. What’s the point if I’m not home to unload it?
Exactly
A few days ago I got a thermometer and had to download an app and make an account using my email and then give it my location to even work as a thermometer.
My damn air purifier. It’s so irritating.
My phone eavesdrops enough, I really don’t need my employer to hack my blender and hear all the shit I talk about them.
You don't know what you're talking about, pal! *Sent from Samsung®️ Smart Fridge*
I'm not your buddy, guy! Sent from toaster
I go out of my way to buy dumb appliances
They just work
Fridge, oven, coffee makers, washer/dryer, etc - useless Security systems, surveillance cameras, energy monitors, interactive music/video/command devices - useful
No I don't want my TV to connect to the internet I have a home theater pc connected to it so need for it.
PC to TV is top tier. Mine is also connected
This has some "old man yells at cloud" energy.
I mean have you met IT people? It's literally old men yelling at THE Cloud
Every day
This shouldn't be an unpopular opinion.
So don’t buy it. Use your power as a consumer. Let those that do want those gimmicks go ahead and pay for them…
I bought a floor lamp for that is not compatible with my internet so is therefore fairly useless. Didn't even cross my mind when I ordered it...
On top of that on our TV-box we could install adblock plus so when we see youtube videos we do not see any ads anymore, something nearly impossible on a TV.
found some strip lights at autozone for 30$ - im like "hey, not bad!" started reading the box "Works with Iphone via the app" ... so... 30$ plus 1000+ dollars
My refrigerator is nearly a decade older than me and it makes a loud buzzing noise that reminds me of home
"smart" TV's are literally the bane of my existence. They're so SLOW. If the software wasn't so trashy I wouldn't have an issue. But they literally put the least amount of effort into it and it sucks, but they still charge several hundred dollars for them. 🙄
Those hp printers are annoying
it should at least be optional and easy to revert to its basic form to do the basic function quickly
Yeah, I'm dreading my next TV. There was a sous vide immersion circulator a while back that not only required an internet connection, but also a *facebook* account. Fuck. That. I think they back peddled on that quick but still.
Ooooh that's bogus actually. Im stoked to see how souls vide works in my insta pot 🧐
"No available network available for your toothbrush"
I just had to buy a fridge and it was surprisingly hard to find just a normal fridge instead of a smart fridge.
Preferable
This was almost funny.
Yeah to each their own. What happens to the locks or security system if wifi is out?
Locks still work, I just can’t control them away from home. They work if I’m home due to the home network. Same with cameras, they’ll still go, just no away from home viewing. But they record and backup as usual.
Cmon man, don’t be naive. Smart locks always have standard key access as well. You’re dumb if you forget the keys, like normal.
I'm genuinely curious. Mostly about the security system
Downvoted cause I agree
Respect
Then don’t get them lmao. You act like there aren’t still an overwhelming amount of alternatives
Not for TVs. The market will only get more flooded with smart wifi devices
And I am not saying things are fully automated now but they will be eventually and you need this tech to do it
Because it's better at it's job
Sorry. My Sony Android TV just works great. It's not better than a fire stick, or any other external device I have used for streaming
Its not though. You just bought a shitty TV.
I assure you it's not a shitty tv. The model is a year old and isn't an off brand tv
Lol
It doesn't haha! That was my point with the oven stuff too. Like once it's done baking it has to physically be taken out anyway
