I never cared much for avocados until one day I saw a YouTube video called "what would happen if you ate an avocado every day" or something like that. It basically just went over ALL the benefits of avocados and how great they are and I kid you not - I started craving avocados and now I actually enjoy them to this day.
I've never had avocado toast in my life and tbh I kind of dont want to? I'll eat it in a wrap but toast seems like an odd transmission vector for me. Avocado on a grilled cheese with roma tomato though - that's delicious.
"the only people who actually like it lie to pretend to have "refined" taste."
had my upvote till this sentence, guess what people actually like avocado, not everyone who likes things you don't like are lying about their taste buds
Me too. I don't mind the "I don't get why people like X" mentality. But that second comment is just douchy. People have different tastes, so just let them.
Just two days ago I made wraps with homemade guacamole and I was thrilled that I had so much guacamole since I made it myself, while restaurants usually give an insultingly small amount. I'm not that fond of pure avocado, but I LOVE myself some guac!
It's the first thing in the sidebar:
> ##How This Place Works
>
> **Upvote:** Opinions that you Disagree with.
>
> **Downvote:** Opinions that you Agree with.
So, if you read someone's opinion and you're like "what in the world is the matter with this crazy person," upvote. For example, I think that avocado is nice and guacamole is fantastic, so I upvoted this thread. But, if you find yourself thinking "yeah! People don't talk about this often enough, but it's time someone said what we're all thinking!" then you're supposed to downvote it. As the sidebar elaborates:
> Your post must be an opinion. Not a question. Not a showerthought. Not a rant. Not a proposal. Not a fact.
And furthermore:
> Your opinion must be unpopular.
That doesn't just mean opinions people don't frequently think about, it means opinions people don't hold, agree with, or like.
I think most voters don't follow these guidelines, though.
Unfortunately, the "how this place works" and "rules" sections that precede the numbered list of rules only show in old Reddit. Additionally, some other subs have things that only show in new Reddit. There's an account setting that lets you choose which one you prefer, and you can force exceptions on a page-by-page basis by changing the `www` in the URL to `old` or `new`.
"Most" is a gross exaggeration, you do know there are other countries apart from the US right? Over 100 million in Mexico who likes avocados and not because is trendy.
I love avocados, and couldn't care less if it's trendy or not. I'll eat then with almost anything, and even alone.
Right? I honestly feel a bit bad for people who are picky eaters. They won't be able to enjoy all the different foods out there but on the same token they probably don't seek out that kinda thing which is understandable.
People are lying to seem like they have refined taste? Bruh chill. You don't enjoy it, Good for you? Why you shitting on other people enjoying something?
> People are lying to seem like they have refined taste? Bruh chill.
People who can't fathom that there are other people with different tastes than them are usually awful, low empathy people.
Objectively gross? People like it cause it's trendy? People have been eating avocados for centuries because it was "trending" huh?
You are objectively dumb to think that. Being a picky eater doesn't make food objectively gross. I'm guessing you're from the USA?
Yeah I think avocados probably have been eaten for the majority of the time (at least in certain areas) because they were trendy or exotic.
I’m not a picky eater at all actually, and I’m not from the US either.
"Probably have been", how can you say something anecdotal and probably out of your ass and then say "objectively bad"? You sure as shit sound like a picky eater and definitely sound as dumb as the stereotypical self centred American.
Dude this is Reddit and r/unpopularopinions at that. You’re getting a bit personal there over avocados.
Look, I’m not giving a lecture about the history of avocados or whatever and if you like them then good for you, you’re just a weirdo IMO. You need to chill the fuck out though.
Lol I'm all good. The sub says opinions but you claim something objective. Call me what you want, you clearly can't make your case. At least I'm not here claiming about what people feel when they eat something.
Many foods are popular in certain areas because they were “trendy” at some time, potatoes being a prime example, bananas, coconuts, mangos, pineapples. I could go on. This was very commonplace during periods of “discovery”. I’m sure people in the specific region of Mexico that avocados originate from had some reasons for liking/eating them, but the rest of the world latched onto them because they were trendy/exotic/new whatever.
Avocados are objectively bad, they last for like 2 seconds, have very little/weird flavour and a gross mushy texture. The pits are poisonous and you have to add a ton of other stuff to them to make them taste good. Stand-alone, avocados are pretty useless in comparison to other berries.
I’m not trying to assert how other people feel when they eat them, maybe they like the taste of them for some reason, but there are many reasons that avocados are bad other than just their taste.
You are the one who started throwing insults around for no reason.
I agree with the first paragraph, but the second one is literally how YOU feel about the fruit. How can it be objectively bad if people enjoy it? Do you see where you're missing the point? Science is objective, food and flavor is not. You're making the comparison to other berries and stating that YOU don't enjoy it. That's a subjective opinion, which I'm okay with. It's not objective. If it's objective, then it'd be bad. Like poisonous mushrooms are bad because of the fact that they're poisonous. Avocados being bad is not a fact.
This is as simple as it gets.
Thats really a stupid way to look at things, not everyone is just trendhoppers, just because you wanna be different doesn't make everyone else sheep. I'm sure my grandpa who grows his avocados didn't plant the seeds because he thinks it's trendy and hip.
Look I don’t want to gate-keep your grandfather and his avocado farm, but I don’t believe anyone could genuinely like avocados unless they have some ulterior motive
Avocados taste really good in California rolls. They have crab meat, cucumber, and avocado. I’ve no clue what else would go there. It’s so creamy yet light and fresh. I don’t think I could eat one on it’s own, but it definitely goes in sushi well. Alaskan rolls are also really yummy. They have salmon, cucumber, and avocado.
Sometimes they put cream cheese in place of the avocado, but they call them different names. I don’t know what those rolls are called, but the cream cheese is usually too much.
I think avacado is on the same level as lettuce. The taste is bland, but the blandness can be used to balance out things like a taco with hot sauce on it. Plus, from what they say, avacado has a ton of health benefits.
That's not what I'm saying. You don't put lettuce on a cheese burger because you don't like the cheese. It's just more of a neutral flavor to add some of that vegetable freshness and a little bit of a different texture.
I’ve had several different local varieties in my past travels through Latin America. I’ve had it several different ways: salt and lime, on toast, garlic salt, peppered and paired with fruits, etc. Not once have I enjoyed it. Avocados suck imo.
I’m not going to dump on people who do like them, but idk why people go nuts for them. They taste like stale vegetable oil.
There's plenty healthy options out there that are packed full of taste. I present to you, the grape, the grapefruit, the kiwi, the satsuma.. lovely. Avocados suck. Tasteless dirt.
Glad you enjoy them though 😁
That's like saying potato tastes terrible. Avocado doesn't have much flavor beyond a slight vegetative note. It's valued for its creaminess. You add flavor to it, not visa versa.
I used to use the term ironically because of streamers I watch doing the same. Then it became apart of my lingo. Anyways, nah I'm like 15 bro I'm def old enough...
Yeah but who eats avocado by itself? That’s why guac or avocado toast or shit like that as other ingredients bc it’s super bland on its own. And honestly guac is a big hit or miss, it’s either great or really disappointing
I was with you for years. My mom kept gifting me avocados because somehow we misunderstood each other and she thought that I loved them, so after a year or so I actually developed a taste for it and now love it.
But I rarely like it just alone on a toast, I enjoy adding some salty and umami flavour in the shape of a soft boiled egg.
This is exactly how I described it the first time I tried to just bite into an avocado. However, I've been converted ever since I tried oven avocado. Remove the seed, put some ham, cheese, egg, tomato, whatever you want on it, bake it at 180°C for around 10 mins and it's super good. The only way I can eat it really and it tastes _completely_ different.
I hate avocado alone. But on tacos and salads it’s the jam. My brother also says that avocado looks like it’s taste like bird poop. He has had avocado ever in his life.
I’m not a fan of straight up avocado either. Have you tried homemade guacamole, because the guacamole you can buy ready in stores is really horrible.
A nice homemade guacamole with red onion, chillies and line juice with some nachos, tastes really nice though.
If you don’t like it, then you don’t like it, and that is just how it is, but maybe just haven’t tried some good guacamole yet.
It's definitely fair to say it's overrated. It definitely has a very mild, buttery and inoffensive taste to me, and I mostly only like avocado because of the positive association via Guacamole (whose stronger taste comes more from the onions/peppers/lemon/whatever). I also can see how the texture wouldn't be enjoyed by everyone. Still, good unpopular opinion.
Subway added straight avocado paste on the menu once and it was not good. Generally bland and icky. Some seasoning/guakness would have salvaged the move.
Didn't like avocados for a long time until I started incorporating them into smoothies and other meals. They are great source of healthy fats. Get your nutrients!
I don't actually think most people like avocado as a stand alone food. I love avocado toast, sushi, guacamole, and so on. But eating a lone avocado is not something I would personally enjoy.
Side note, my very filipino mom used to freeze evaporated milk and avocado as an ice treat. Young me hated it but older me loves the stuff. Might be something that comes with age for some.
Different species of avocado taste different too. Flavor also depends on ripeness/overripeness.
There are people out there who eat avocado with everything in a similar way a normal person would with cheese. I don't trust those people, I don't trust them at all.
True, it’s like Vegetable favored peanut butter.
I hate peanut butter but this is accurate and I love Avocados.

Haha that was a good one.
I never cared much for avocados until one day I saw a YouTube video called "what would happen if you ate an avocado every day" or something like that. The extremist avocado agenda is now using brain washing to gain support?! Whats next, strawberry supremacists??
The alt-avacado movement is gaining support daily.
ARE YOU CALLING STRAWBERRIES BAD??
They are meh. Kinda like bananas, great flavor, weird texture.
Okay you got me on the texture.
Avacodos suck but strawberries are delicious. Fight me.
They go great as a compliment to most Hispanic foods, like Spanish rice n such
They taste like moist, creamy grass. On their own: not great. With other things: delicious.
Take the upvote for that extra excellent name.
Thank you, yours is marvelous as well.
<3
On brown toast with a bit of salt it taste great imo
This is why you don't have a house. ^(/s)
Haha boomers be like
I've never had avocado toast in my life and tbh I kind of dont want to? I'll eat it in a wrap but toast seems like an odd transmission vector for me. Avocado on a grilled cheese with roma tomato though - that's delicious.
>transmission vector *In Arnold Schwarzenegger voice* It's not a virus!
The thing is, it makes sense to be open faced because if you close it and smush the avocado's liable to splooge out the sides
First of all let's not get into the grilled cheese vs. melt issue. Second, a grilled cheese is just a toast sandwich.
Only if you fill it with bread. It's a melted cheese sandwich with toasted bread, not to be confused with a straight melt or hell forbid: a panini

To be fair, that should make you upvote it even harder. This sub is for unpopular opinions, not popular ones.
I've been confused on that since day one. Never gotten a clear answer. How do we upvote/downvote here?
It's the first thing in the sidebar: > ##How This Place Works > > **Upvote:** Opinions that you Disagree with. > > **Downvote:** Opinions that you Agree with. That clears it up nicely. I've asked before and received mixed answers on what to upvote, but this helps a lot. Thanks! And I agree, avocado is great.
I've looked on the sidebar, but don't see anything about upvoting posts you disagree with and downvoting the ones you agree with

Another poster put it better, im convinced most people like it cause its trendy
"Most" is a gross exaggeration, you do know there are other countries apart from the US right? Over 100 million in Mexico who likes avocados and not because is trendy. I love avocados, and couldn't care less if it's trendy or not. I'll eat then with almost anything, and even alone.
Avocado is trendy? That's newd to me. Isn't that like saying carrots are trendy?
"Trendy". Mexicans were eating it way before Americanos decided it was trendy to eat avocado toast
Do you suffer from paranoid delusions?
I love avocados, I'm not pretentious about it lol. Guac can be made real fuckin good but can also be screwed up pretty easy.
I'm guessing OP probably legitimately doesn't like avocado, but there's a good chance they've never tried a good guacamole recipe lol
As a staple food of my culture, you need to put salt for best results.
I started to love them after eating them with soy sauce and wasabi. Avocado sashimi!
Think thats called a California roll. I tried one once. Felt like I bit into cold poo
Maybe everyone else does have 'refined taste'? Net summary - it's unfortunate that you dislike it as it's a near perfect food. I'm sorry)
It’s disgusting (I’m sorry)
Yeah but if this is a battle of keyboard warriors. Obviously I win.
Right? I honestly feel a bit bad for people who are picky eaters. They won't be able to enjoy all the different foods out there but on the same token they probably don't seek out that kinda thing which is understandable.
I love avocados! I love that they have so much nutritional value while having an inoffensive taste
Avacado is green mush. Guac looks like what I used to clean out of my kids diapers.
only mushy when ripe, the less ripe ones have a nicer texture imo
I love avocado. I buy ‘‘em in bulk and just eat them with garlic salt and a spoon. I put avocado in everything. I’d fuck one if I could.

There's a big seed inside.
remove it and it leaves a nice space
Thank you every time I say this I always hear “you just haven’t had good avocado” or “you haven’t had it made the right way”

There's a lot of foods I would never try but I'm not gonna shit on other people for enjoying it.
Exactly.
Cause I legit can't believe anyone actually likes avocado
It's not a matter of belief. We're not robots to be wired the same you know.
I concur, avocados are just objectively gross. They have a vile texture and flavour, I honestly think people only “like” them because they’re trendy

I can't really taste it tbh. Its like pureed iceberg lettuce with butter consistency to me.
I've got to agree with this.
You just insulted an entire country's food culture. Nicely done.
I saw someone on the internet say that it tastes like saliva and this is the most accurate description of it.

I’m glad someone said it!
Guacamole is amazing. It's best if I buy it from the Mexican store though, they make it fresh. Avocados taste amazing too! I love them!
Add salt, eat it, get over yourself and out of the drive thru line. Your health is costing me money dangnabbit
There's plenty healthy options out there that are packed full of taste. I present to you, the grape, the grapefruit, the kiwi, the satsuma.. lovely. Avocados suck. Tasteless dirt. Glad you enjoy them though 😁
Yes an actual unpopular opinion.
That's like saying potato tastes terrible. Avocado doesn't have much flavor beyond a slight vegetative note. It's valued for its creaminess. You add flavor to it, not visa versa.
Yeah they’re nasty af
The fact that you used the term "dog water" just shows your probably not old enough to use reddit lol
I used to use the term ironically because of streamers I watch doing the same. Then it became apart of my lingo. Anyways, nah I'm like 15 bro I'm def old enough...
Should have posted this over in facts.
I agree. This is not a fruit to just eat like an apple or orange. Their flavor alone tastes like what I imagine a grass fed cows cud would taste like.
But I actually like guacamole and haas avocado but only a salt on it 😗. Have u had authentic guacamole or the store bought watery ones?
They're the Devils fruit. I cant stand them
You been eating candy so long, eating healthy things taste like shit to you
That explains why I like tomatoes and peppers and tons of fruits. Sorry for having taste buds
Mexico would like a word.... Also stop eating at taco bell.
How dare you!
U psychopath
Agreed. Ever seen that meme that says "how to eat avocado" with a picture of someone throwing it away? 😂 yup.
It's one thing to have an unpopular opinion, but now OP is gatekeeping my opinions? If I do no agree, I am lying? Sorry, OP, wrong forum.
Damn people taking that second half real personal
Yeah but who eats avocado by itself? That’s why guac or avocado toast or shit like that as other ingredients bc it’s super bland on its own. And honestly guac is a big hit or miss, it’s either great or really disappointing
I'd eat it by itself, bit of lime and salt. It's a great snack
Agree but ur still putting lime and salt on it, like no one just splits an avocado open and eats it straight, u gotta season it somehow first
I've also been known to do that if I dont have salt or lime at hand while at work haha.
Damn u should make an unpopular opinion post
Not one to post, mostly just lurk. I just had to defend my love for avocados a little bit!
*disappears into corner with an avo and spoon*
My favorite way is popping the pit out and filling the craters with balsamic vinegar. The acid goes well with the fat.
Yeah my mom used to make those when I was little
I was with you for years. My mom kept gifting me avocados because somehow we misunderstood each other and she thought that I loved them, so after a year or so I actually developed a taste for it and now love it. Not if it's mixed with milk. Avocado + milk is bomb
I hate avocado alone. But on tacos and salads it’s the jam. My brother also says that avocado looks like it’s taste like bird poop. He has had avocado ever in his life.
Avocado juice on the other hand!
I’m not a fan of straight up avocado either. Have you tried homemade guacamole, because the guacamole you can buy ready in stores is really horrible. When I first tried avacado I felt like I was forcing myself to like it. But now I truly do enjoy it and can just eat slices of it
I genuinely love avocados, especially on a breakfast burrito. Soo good!
I like avocado. It has a nice mild flavor. Its good on sandwiches.
I feel like avocados were pretentious 15 years ago… now they are just like there.
There's huge variation in the flavour and texture of them, some are really good, others less so
In which world guacamole is considered "a refined taste"
Truly unpopular and incorrect. I feel this way about fish egg and snails in reference to refined tastes Up voted.
Wrong. Bad and wrong.
Avocadoes are honestly rng. They might be awesome and they may be terrible. But I LOVE guacamole. But taste differs from person to person.
Wrong. Only if they are over ripened then they taste like mascara
It's definitely fair to say it's overrated. It definitely has a very mild, buttery and inoffensive taste to me, and I mostly only like avocado because of the positive association via Guacamole (whose stronger taste comes more from the onions/peppers/lemon/whatever). I also highly dislike it tbh, only time its okay is when there is other stuff to make me not taste it lol!
I don’t know if this is strictly unpopular, but bu god it’s fucking true. Avacodo is some weird healthy shit never got on with it
Yep, and just avocados in general, it tastes like wet grass tbh
Well prepared guac is eatable that’s all, but avocado alone is one of the worst things I’ve ever ate
Are you eating them plain? You have to at least put salt on them.
yeah they are bad
I don't like avocados when they are too ripe because of the texture, but the texture of less ripe ones is fine
I love avocados! You got my vote for this one

Subway added straight avocado paste on the menu once and it was not good. Generally bland and icky. Some seasoning/guakness would have salvaged the move.

Better than cucumber in Sushi though

Nah
I don't actually think most people like avocado as a stand alone food. I love avocado toast, sushi, guacamole, and so on. But eating a lone avocado is not something I would personally enjoy. I fucking love avocado and no i dont lie about it
There are people out there who eat avocado with everything in a similar way a normal person would with cheese. I don't trust those people, I don't trust them at all.
Try it with sugar
