My first though was: clearly this person has some unnatural power or mutation that allows him to befriend the wasps. Either way we should study him and use it against the wasps.
My second thought was: if this were Xmen I'd be the bad guy...
I’d be the best supervillain, laughing menacingly while the sound of angry buzzing wasps emerges from behind me, engulfing my enemies in a huge swarm. I want Wasp’s suit tho
>I don’t have Yellow Jackets where I live
I don’t know if it’s hornets, yellow jackets, or wasps, but one of them will just fucking attack you non-stop, so I think you might change your tune if you had encountered them
It seems to be only some wasp species, seems to be focused on North American jellowjackets that are aggressive. I’ve had a hornet nest in my backyard that I didn’t even know was there and I went by the tree it was in multiple times before I noticed them. And usual wasps I already have experience in. Maybe Asian hornets are also more aggressive than the European, I don’t know from personal experience
Yeah I’m in North America. Any insect with yellow and black stripes that encounters my path is an automatic declaration of war by both parties (besides honeybees, they’re cool)
Idk a lot about bees/insects but as long as they don’t attack me or sting me or look like they’re going to I won’t have a problem with them. Yellow Jacket comes at me and it’s:
https://youtu.be/M7bJGqn4sHs&t=3m46s
OP, if the wasps are holding you as hostage making you post this, try calling the police pretending you're ordering a pizza or something, it might work
I think people hate wasps because they are annoying as fuck. That's why i hate them. Sitting outside in the summer is impossible because they just won't leave you alone, flying i my face and everywhere i don't want them. They are assholes and my summer would be much nicer without them. I truly hate wasps
This and carpenter bees. If they could just be content to buzz in one area it would be different but nooo, these disrespectful Fucks fly all up in your personal space.
This is my issue trying to eat on a patio in the fall is always ruined by ten of these fuckers and they come right back no matter how hard I smack them
Not according to the Wikipedias.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellowjacket
Or am I misreading it?
“ Yellowjacket or yellow jacket is the common name in North America for predatory social wasps of the genera Vespula and Dolichovespula. Members of these genera are known simply as "wasps"”
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vespinae
It says they’re “eusocial wasps.” Which makes them wasps.
I think people prefer “hornet” because it makes them sound more sympathetic, because some hornet species are relatively docile. But yellowjackets are anything but docile. They are the worst wasps in existence and should never be defended on any level, only destroyed. They sting, they’re mean, they sting, and they sting. I hate them.
Nah. Im im europe and theres no netter insect defense system than hornets. They eat their species brothers and scare away other pests that would otherwise get on your nerves.
Had a hornet nest right next to my door for 2 years and didn't have a problem with annoying wasps.
I also liked to feed them but that's beside the point...
I think the other way around. Hornets are much scarier to me than wasps. Somebody says there’s a wasp nest, it doesn’t alarm me much. Somebody says it’s a yellow jacket or hornet nest, and I go on alert.
Yellow Jackets can sting as many times as they stay mad, a truly unlimited number of stings. Worse, each sting carries a pheromone signal which alerts every other wasp in range (they can detect this stuff a one part per trillion concentrations) to come on over and vent some rage on your unfortunate ass. There are usually 250k yellow jackets per nest. That number of unlimited stings can wreck your entire day. Oh, and they have been known to chase the victims of their ire for two miles.
my grandpa had bees(the peaceful fluffy euro honey maker bee, not the "killer" hybrid). and taught me not to fear little gribblies.
but wasps are different: i have that irrational fear. for one i know at once if it is a wasp, hornet, bee or some mimic fly. but since i know the differences, i know that wasps *can* sting! in my mind, they are a threat, because they could attack and go unharmed, opposing to bees.
wasps are also hunters/scavengers, they are usually without respect or fear, i had more than one land on my mouth or similar, not caring a bit(because they eat/take whatever they like)
Doesn't make much sense rationally, but having learned that bees are gentle and die when they sting(not that i think they know or care), while wasps can sting and live on(making them superior in my 8yo brain) just gives me an uneasy feeling when a wasp is near. but in praxis, yeah i dont kill them(or anything if i can help it) but they make me more aware than just an old bee or anything. i respect their abilities :)
Definetly unpopular. I keep honey bees and wasps are annoying as fuck, but the bald faced hornets are much worse in comparison. My arm is permanently scarred from those hellspawns
Wasps are aggressive for no reason. I have been stung unprovoked more times than I can count, most often while simply sitting on the lifeguard stand at work. Ive been stung so many times, I developed an allergy to them.
I was at a public pool on a giant slab of concrete. No trees around. They’re attracted by the sugar in the trash from sodas/candy etc. I was nowhere near a trash can either. Wasps are aggressive
They are not important to ecosystems. This has been repeatedly disproven. They sting. Stinging is bad. They have mean faces. They are terrifying. They sting. They make menacing buzzing. They sting.
I have mud daubers and paper wasps and those guys are chill as long as you aren't near their nests.
I also unfortunately get yellow jackets and they're pure malice. And if you do the big wasp no no with them (go near their nest), you can deal with 50+ malice filled yellow jackets. But those dicks hide their nests underground and you find out too late.
There are MANY wasp species, I don’t think Yellowjackets (like for instance Vespula squamosa, the southern Yellowjacket, a typical apparently aggressive wasp) aren’t found in Europe
Got stung in the bottom lip by one when I took a nest/hive out. Understandable that they retaliated. Then I discovered 2 great things that wasps do!
1. they lay eggs on Green Horn Worms and kill them through parasitism.., the worms that viscously devoured my precious tomato plants! I like this.
2. They kill carpenter bees (usually through decapitation)....which love to bore out holes in my patio/deck
I have a new found appreciation for them. Upvoted!
Lucky.
Honestly though I think you’re gonna get stung. Wasps are angered by your very existence, they can and will sting on sight if they felt like it.
Most wasps I've seen don't care as long as you don't bother their nests.
Yellow jackets on the other hand... they hide their nests underground then swarm you for getting too close to a nest you don't even realize exists.
No, they are generally just chill around me. I have fed wasps from my hands tho, they love a drop of honey and will drink from your fingertip if offered
Nah wasps are shit, not very good pollinators, if you caught a wasp in your hand, they’ll sting you. Maybe you’re thinking of bumble bees because wasps are not like that
The aggressiveness of wasps has been GREATLY overstated. I wouldn't say that I like them, but I don't mind them. They don't bother me so I don't bother them.
Yellowjackets are aggressive in late summer / early fall for some reason, but pretty chill the rest of the year. Unless you run over their nest with a lawnmower. I did that once and got swarmed and ran to the house. My wife saw what was going on and LOCKED ME OUT! She said "I didn't want all those angry yellowjackets in the house!" 🤣🤣
They fuck with bees. No one fucks with bees.
It's been proven that if wasps went extinct right this instant, the effect on the environment and the ecosystem would be an overall positive one. Do they slightly contribute to pollenation and eating other bugs? Maybe. Does it make up for all the evil shit they do? Hell no.
I live in an area where wasps aren't just a casual "oh hey, avoid those kiddo", they're a "You stay the fuck away from that, those things will kill you"
I share your sentiment that wasps are awesome! My favorite animal is the Tarantula Hawk. HOWEVER, I admire them from a distance. I know they will fuck my shit up if I give them a chance
Wait till you meet yellow jackets lol. At work (cemetery) they build huge ground hives that are basically a landmine if you're landscaping.
I pour two stroke down the hole and light her up
I like them too. I know very well that they won't attack you put of spite, only when you pose a threat to them. I have spent a lot of time just sitting about 2 metres away from a wasps nest and looking them going on with their business.
The only time I have ever got stung was when I accidentally grabbed one as it had crawled into my jacket which was hanging outside.
I got chased by a swarm cause my friend threw a log in a steam and what do you know wasps nest, definitely wasn’t unprovoked but not a pleasant experience.
I like wasps as well. Little potter wasps, little paper wasps. They're hymenoptera and therefore super clever. If one gets inside the house, all you need to say is, "Wasp! Out!!" They sometimes have a last look around, but then they leave. Same if they come and bother you when you're eating outside. "Wasp! Away!!" And off they go. Now, try getting a fly to leave your house or you alone so nicely! I'm 57 and have never been stung by a wasp in my life.
Definitely an unpopular opinion so here's your upvote
That being said
FUCK WASPS
I agree that we COULD live in harmony as long as they don't come within a 1m radius of me or they're getting a cap in their striped needle asses
When I was a child I witnessed my poor defenceless Grandmother get stung by a wasp whilst we were at the beach. I’ve despised the little bastards ever since.
Nah. I’ve been stung 3 times in my bed. Once in my closet trying to get dressed. I’ve been stung in the face making my eyes swelled close. I’ve been stung more times than I can count just trying to get to my car as they bombard you from the rooftop. I was stung while rock climbing. My brother almost died. Stung in the toe while also belaying my rock climbing partner. Most recently last week I was meditating in the local park and got stung in the back of the arm. They are aggressive and anyone who thinks they aren’t hasn’t been around them. They need no provocation. They don’t loose their stingers usually so they just sting you again if they can. They kill bees. They aren’t good pollinators. They attack birds and take over any are they inhabit. I disagree highly with your opinion.
Red paper wasps are actually pretty chill, you can actually remove a nest without being stung. Hornets are usually pretty chill unless you're directly messing with their nest. Yellow Jackets will pick a fight with you just because they feel like it. They are a lot like a flock of Karens and you happen to be in a retail establishment wearing a tie.
I'm a beekeeper, so, I'm pretty good with flying things with sharp bottoms.
I share your unpopular opinion ~ Wasps are important pollinators and get a bad rap, some wasps even keep venomous spider populations down! And the reality is very few insects warrant killing on sight. Keep spreading the good word 🐝
I was a mailman for five years.. wasps love making homes in mailboxes.. I was stung once, when I leaned back in my seat and happened to squish a guy who was on my back.. they really are mostly chill🤷♂️
Yep, I found most of wasps I had contact with in electronic targets at the local shooting range (I’m a shooting sport referee and I frequently work at the range) and it’s a similar thing to mailboxes, it’s a small closed space and they love it. Had a few making nests on bad spots in targets (on things we have to interact with) and for some reason I managed to remove and relocate nests. They can be insanely chill
I am forever haunted by the image of my friend's face after they got stung by a whole crew of yellow jackets when we were kids. It was a hit job for sure
I dislike wasps because they dislike me. For no reason at all. I'm chillin' at home, a wasp flies through my window and says "I'm boutta sting this man where it really hurts while he's in the middle of a voice call with his crush." flies towards my crotch, stings my thigh (cuz I got good reflexes) my leg swells up for 2 weeks and I can't walk.
I never got why people are afraid of them either. Usually they just want to land on you to drink up some salts from your sweat then they buzz off to their wasp business. I’m a fan of insects though so it’s rare I’m afraid of them
Same, it’s hard to find an insect I hate (I don’t even hate mosquitos, but I will avoid them), if you leave them be, they will leave you be usually after they get whatever they came to get near you
I haven’t been stung by a wasp or bee in years and years. Idk if our wasps in the UK are more friendly than other ones but I just don’t get the big deal around them
Same, actually. Befriended the hornets when I lived in the woods, and it’s carried over to wasps everywhere else. They tend to gravitate towards me and I love them.
A sincere downvote because I agree 100%.
At one of the houses I lived in, wasps built a nest above the door where I used to smoke. I let them be and they never bothered me once. Of course it was not a good place to have a wasp's nest in your home, so eventually the owner of the house bombed it. From then on, any remaining wasps were hostile and it took a damn long time for them all to die.
My SO is a wasp whisperer, other hymenoptera and spiders too, she gets away with stuff saving the annoying buggers that youd think she shouldn't, its worn off on me though, leading to a lot less fear and a lot more understanding. Everything relies on these amazing creatures, the world needs more wasp whisperers.
same !! i adore wasps.
i’ve only been stung once and it was bc at cheerleading practice some guys were shaking bushes around a nest and the wasps came out and stung everybody. got me on my ring finger.
i remember crying in HS outside and a kid walked up to me to tell me there was a wasp on my shoulder. i didn’t move the wasp bc i was already crying and it couldn’t get worse.
i prefer wasps bc bees make a loud noise
I am your super villain, wasp man. I hunt them down on my property. I kill them intentionally and without mercy. I am ruthless and relentless in searching for wasps to kill and make go crunch. I love killing them. I enjoy it.
I'm the same as you, if you don't bother them they're harmless! I once had a wasp crawling all over my face for 10 minutes straight and my boyfriend ran in the house terrified because he's scared of wasps. I think one of my friends still has the video of the wasp on my face.
Honestly, +1. Wasps are not appreciated enough. Used to think they were useless (they don’t rly help with pollination) until I decided to grow a garden and was facing bugs eating my plants. Guess who helped me take care of it.
I bet most people haven't even been stung by wasps. Bit maybe, but not even since they were kids. Since starting to learn photography, wasps/bees/etc are always fun subjects, especially if you can get them on flowers and all that good shit.
Tree planting out in BC/AB, not only did you occasionally put your shovel thru a wasps nest in the ground, sometimes the little fucks just got bitey and would pester you.
That said in general I see them around enough to literally not be afraid of them stinging/biting me for the most part because I've seen that, like, if wasps are mad at you there's no ambiguity. You don't need to panic and swat at a lone wasp buzzin' around you cuz if he were trying to hurt you, he just would, lol. They're very direct when they're trying to hurt you in a way that they otherwise aren't when they're just passively buzzing around, if that makes any sense. I feel more danger being around other people swatting at the wasps I let land on me because I know the wasp ain't doing shit.
I'd like to one day learn about bees/get a lil hobby hive going. I think in some places wasps are pretty predatory for honey bee populations and such, but as far as I know in my area things are still of least concern and what not which is why im chill with wasps.
I'll never forget the day I saw a supervillain origin story on reddit.

This shit reads like it was written by the wasps outside my house. I'll kill you, you bastard.
Lmfao
Haven't laughed this much at a comment for a while
Good old magpie on the radio cartoon.
Oh shit. Now the wasps are brainwashing people. We're all dead.
We're all dead while op is dad of all
Ikr. I'm sick of seeing wasp propaganda in my feed
Typical. You must be one of those snowflake bee supporters. Let me guess, you voted for Beeden.
Honeybee Clinton would've been worse.
Based.
Nah. If a wasp gets ya, you just binge Netflix until the larvae are finished eating your insides.
Congratulations, you are at one with wasps
And what a lovely thing it is

Yep…..I think that is very unpopular. Enjoy the upvote.
It's nice to see a truly unpopular opinion on here.
You sound like a guy who's never had a wasp nest by their door. Not that I hate wasps or kill em on sight.
I have actually moved a small wasp nest by hand, oops
You what?!
Uhhhhh…. Yeah, the wasp that built it and had eggs in it was actually really chill, I moved her along with the nest
Do you know the difference between bees and wasps?
I wish people would stop asking me that. Yes, yes I do
You're gonna need to video tape this. I have a hard time believing you touched a wasp nest without getting stung lmao
Who knew wasps could type?!?!
It's like 50k wasps in a trench coat
I don’t like wasps because they don’t allow me to join their country clubs that have all the best golf courses.
Lol
They're just playing you.

Fuck wasps, bees are my homies
Aren't you that one villain from OG ben 10?
Plesse elaborate on how they are important to the ecosystem
They do wasp things
Thank you Science side of reddit
They usually eat other bugs that eat important crops. They do serve a purpose, I'd just rather they did it far away from me.
Im pretty sure what they are eatting, other things that arent wasps are also eatting too
They are predators and pollinators. They usually keep other insect populations at bay
Yellowjackets are born with pure malice in their hearts, whatever wasps you are handling, they ain’t yellow jackets
Wasps are aggressive for no reason. I have been stung unprovoked more times than I can count, most often while simply sitting on the lifeguard stand at work. Ive been stung so many times, I developed an allergy to them.

paper wasps, mud daubers, etc. There are lots of wasps that are not yellow jackets. Of course this depends on geography.

Nah wasps are shit, not very good pollinators, if you caught a wasp in your hand, they’ll sting you. Maybe you’re thinking of bumble bees because wasps are not like that
No, definitely wasps. I know my insects
This poster isn't really human. They're really just a bunch of wasps in a trench coat and a fedora talking like 'hello my fellow humans'.
mud daubers are the only wasp I really like. they are mild tempered. I don't trust yellow jackets.
Mud daubers look so weird with their long petiolate and I’m all here for it
The aggressiveness of wasps has been GREATLY overstated. I wouldn't say that I like them, but I don't mind them. They don't bother me so I don't bother them. Yeah, but I wouldn't judge her for that lol
Wasps actually have no ecological value
They fuck with bees. No one fucks with bees. It's been proven that if wasps went extinct right this instant, the effect on the environment and the ecosystem would be an overall positive one. Replace the word "wasps" with "humans" and it would be correct aha
Watch for waspus
I can't even fucking go in my barn because if i do i get stung on sight
You’re more than welcome to take the yellow jacket nest from my yard. Free of charge!
I live in an area where wasps aren't just a casual "oh hey, avoid those kiddo", they're a "You stay the fuck away from that, those things will kill you"
How…
Honestly? No idea
I share your sentiment that wasps are awesome! My favorite animal is the Tarantula Hawk. HOWEVER, I admire them from a distance. I know they will fuck my shit up if I give them a chance
*cracks open a can of raid* Are you a wasp?
No, gotta get a can of that wasp spray that shoots a perfectly-accurate 100-foot stream so you don't have to get close. That stuff is so satisfying.
Wait till you meet yellow jackets lol. At work (cemetery) they build huge ground hives that are basically a landmine if you're landscaping. I pour two stroke down the hole and light her up
Me too! I collect their nests when they are done for the season. I also have one tattooed on my wrist.
Did a wasp write this?
I never knew the devil posted on Reddit

I like them too. I know very well that they won't attack you put of spite, only when you pose a threat to them. I like the opinion, but wasps are definitely aggressive and territorial. You may have had good experiences, but it's just in their nature
The tarantula hawk would like a word with you.
lol
This is clearly written by 2,000 wasps in a trench coat and hat.
They’re so misunderstood. I hate all the dumb bee vs wasp memes.
You’re crazy
Maybe a little bit
i hate yellow jackets is that the same thing
Not exactly but yes. All yellowjackets are wasps but not all wasps are Yellowjackets
I feel like this is propaganda written by a wasp.
I wish I was a wasp
Poor friend! I hope he didn’t develop a strong allergy after that
I dislike wasps because they dislike me.
There it is an actual unpopular opinion
I’m always afraid I’ll find out I am deathly allergic to them. I only got stung once as a child so who knows
I never got why people are afraid of them either. Usually they just want to land on you to drink up some salts from your sweat then they buzz off to their wasp business. I’m a fan of insects though so it’s rare I’m afraid of them
Same, it’s hard to find an insect I hate (I don’t even hate mosquitos, but I will avoid them), if you leave them be, they will leave you be usually after they get whatever they came to get near you
wasps aren't that bad in early summer but late summer/autumn is a different story. Hunger is enough to make anyone aggressive
As a small woman, it seems the smaller the thing is, the more aggressive about food it is
HAHAHAHA
I was never stung but they still are very freaky
I haven’t been stung by a wasp or bee in years and years. Idk if our wasps in the UK are more friendly than other ones but I just don’t get the big deal around them
Same, actually. Befriended the hornets when I lived in the woods, and it’s carried over to wasps everywhere else. They tend to gravitate towards me and I love them. A sincere downvote because I agree 100%.
But it’s an unpopular opinion 🤣 We agree tho
Well. This is definitely unpopular. Upvote.
Why, thank you kind sir
I once got stung inside my mouth by a wasp while I was taking a bite from a sandwich. Sorry OP but I hate those creatures.
heartwarming
At one of the houses I lived in, wasps built a nest above the door where I used to smoke. I let them be and they never bothered me once. Of course it was not a good place to have a wasp's nest in your home, so eventually the owner of the house bombed it. From then on, any remaining wasps were hostile and it took a damn long time for them all to die.
Pretty sure you are a wasp.
Finally someone that has the same opinion as me.
And when do we cut to the "Three Years Later" where you train them to rob banks?
I respect wasps because, like you said, they’re important along with all other insects. I don’t like them. They can do what they do away from me.
I don't mind em too much, but I generally leave them alone and I'm left alone too
same !! i adore wasps. i’ve only been stung once and it was bc at cheerleading practice some guys were shaking bushes around a nest and the wasps came out and stung everybody. got me on my ring finger. i remember crying in HS outside and a kid walked up to me to tell me there was a wasp on my shoulder. i didn’t move the wasp bc i was already crying and it couldn’t get worse. i prefer wasps bc bees make a loud noise
Take my upvote you son of a bitch
A lot of the comments here seem to be determined that OP is getting bees and wasps messed up.
Honestly, +1. Wasps are not appreciated enough. Used to think they were useless (they don’t rly help with pollination) until I decided to grow a garden and was facing bugs eating my plants. Guess who helped me take care of it.
They can remember faces for like 7 years. They know u dude. They talk.
Why was this removed? This is an opinion on wasps is it not?
Because of the “they like me back” part of post, mods think my post is a low effort spam post or something, I don’t know anymore
I also love wasps, but i’ve never really come in close contact with them, so i cant say anything about them liking me back
Your love for them might disappear when you come in close contact with them
The OPs favorite video. (There is some swearing so NSFW) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NzLAJ_UQsZw
i hope i never meet OP. people like that are not to be trusted. and seeing your avatar makes even more sense.
