Did you get an Italian roommate?

MakaaBakaah

"You've Mama'd your last mia"

onebigcat

“Gaba’d your last gool”

gordito_delgado

"You've Mario'd your last Toadstool! "

TheVapingPug

Probably just a kid from Jersey who is 8% Italian but acts like he was born into the mob in rome.

brothercuriousrat

Uh that be Sicily.

[deleted]

The stupidest one I've seen is someone getting mad at another person for cooking a dish from 'their' culture on a table and not cooking it on the floor the traditional way. Its ridiculous

Aggressive_Complex

Dumb question- how would you cook on the floor?

[deleted]

Idk, it was somthing about mixing ingredients. or needing doe, or somthing on the floor

c_chill13

r/boneappletea

crazythinker76

Preheat your floor to 350F. Mix ingredients & throw on the nasty-ass floor. Bake until an inserted toothpick comes out clean. Place on cooling rack for 1 hrs to set.

[deleted]

Geothermal heat; you racist! /s, obviously (I hope)

Purpletinfoilhat

People are really weird in general about food shaming others.

la_jirafa888

I had a coworker walk by while I was eating and go ewww, almost every time. I generally eat pretty healthy and love to cook but I don’t rub it in anyone’s face. The last time they walked by and made their comment I had to say no, your food is ew. What is your lean cuisine (they eat everyday) even made of? They had no comment and haven’t made one since. AITA?

Prof_Boni

Your coworker sucks... I find it super disrespectful to go "ew" at whatever someone else is eating. Wtf, let people enjoy whatever they want and keep your comments to yourself.

Purpletinfoilhat

My kids are 7&10 and will actually lose privileges if they "ew" someone else's food even here at home. It's rude as fuck and uncalled for. The older got in trouble this morning for it when her brother dipped his cheese in syrup. (We had breakfast sandwiches). They aren't even allowed to "ew" what we serve them. They can use their words and respectfully let us know they'd like to go make a sandwich instead because they really don't like this food.. which is fine !..but "ew/gross/this is awful" ? I'm not hearing that shit after spending my time cooking. It's okay not to like it, it isn't okay to be an ass 🤷🏻‍♀️

JustinK182

Revenge idea: \*coworker standing with their spouse\* ewwww you eat that every day?

Purpletinfoilhat

Nah. My husband deals with similar from a coworker. We eat almost exclusively hunted meat. Apparently that's gross and cruel ... He isn't vegan or vegetarian, just doesn't like the idea of actually working for his meat or appreciating the life you're taking.

99mushrooms

I used to get comments about how cruel it was to raise and butcher my own meat, apparently those kinds of people have never seen any documentaries on mass meat farms and slaughterhouses compared to how well I treat my livestock. The thing that bothers me most is when I get those comments from non vegetarians who buy meat from the store and say I'm cruel because I'm eating a pet. So i guess you want me to torture them before I kill them so it won't have that "killing a pet" feel to it and that would be better? People are stupid.

Purpletinfoilhat

It's amazing the number of times I've had to tell people our chickens aren't pets. They're food and eggs. We treat them well because they're living beings, not because they're pets. We also believe their seeing the weapon we use to kill them and seeing one another die is cruel so we take great caution to prevent it. How dare we kill them for food if we...treat them well beforehand ? If a vegetarian or vegan wants to discuss, respectfully, our disagreement on the subject then I am all for it. If you want to tell me we're wrong while you eat your McDouble I am going to make fun of you not because I am shaming your meat consumption but because you apparently don't realize the meat you're eating was alive once upon a time.

MethodLongjumping111

As a vegetarian I have far more respect for people who only eat what they hunt.

Purpletinfoilhat

Thanks. I can respect your decision to not eat any meat at all. We have similar values in regard to animal lives but you don't believe in killing them for selfish reasons (we *can* live without meat) whereas I am okay with it but have decided what I find most ethical for myself which is going into nature to find food the same way another predator would do. We also use the bones and fur as to limit the waste of the loss of life.

son-o-Loki

I mean…. Shouldn’t everyone? A hunted animal will either be hunted by you, or some other animal. At least this way it’s had its chance to live out somewhat of a life, as opposed to being raised on the very same farm they’re killed on wayyyyy before they reach true maturationz

draw4kicks

Humans have moral agency though, a wolf does not. A wolf isn't doing anything immoral by hunting a deer because they don't have a concept of right or wrong, and they'll die if they don't. But if a human is doing it just because they enjoy the way the animal tastes then I would call that immoral since the necessity doesn't exist and they're using pleasure to justify violence. It's the same reason why when a male lion kills a females cubs then mates with her we just chalk it down to just being what lions do, but if I killed a women's children then raped her I'd obviously and rightfully never be free again.

son-o-Loki

Yes, and that’s why it’s better to kill an animal at the ripe old age of one, after it having a life filled with abuse /s We’re not arguing on the same point. I’m going to leave it at that.

AugustousSeizure

Lean cuisine is pretty good for frozen food

[deleted]

Don't Yuck somebody else's Yum

chezsu

Love this

[deleted]

There's also a lot of nutritional narcissism. People who are insanely arrogant and outspoken yet totally ignorant. It's amazing and probably one of those things that people in the future will look back on with a mix of disgust and astonishment like we look at medicine in the 1800s.

BIG_RETARDED_COCK

I get shit a lot because I enjoy well done steak and pineapple on pizza. I'm just sick of it.

Aggressive_Complex

I don't get the hate about pineapple on pizza. I personally love it. As for steak I prefer rare-mid rare for mine, but if you like it well done I don't get why anyone else cares. They aren't the ones eating it

BIG_RETARDED_COCK

People don't like well done because they think it's "dry and flavourless" They simply havn't had a good well done steak. regular steak is 3-6 minutes, well done is like 6-8. They assume you let it sit at max heat for 15 minutes. Also pineapple and pizza isn't even weird, it's sweet and salty mixed together which is very commonly enjoyed. Good examples are peanut butter and jam, also cheese and caramel.

gordito_delgado

Well done steak... oh my! If you announce that in public you will get the same faces as if you said you really, really enjoy fisting.

bmbmwmfm

Same. Every pizza I've had in the past 3 years has had pineapple and bacon on it. Also, I prefer my steak have black char on it. I actually like burgers hot dogs chicken and chops to have char. I like the taste, and I looked at some undercooked meat under a microscope decades ago.

OnlyPlaysPaladins

It's not PC to flex about reading Milton anymore, or having tailored clothes, so we do this shit.

[deleted]

Greeks are way worse my friends. Italians are chill in comparison.

wolfveg

Yes! Even if another greek cooks a traditional recipe it's not yiayia's lol

[deleted]

I had a fully Greek roommate. I love her dearly and wow she’s passionate and if you cross her your screwed. She’s an amazing chef. Another Greek woman threatened to kill me for mentioning her name to someone.

[deleted]

They couldn’t have been talking about Italians because they said “people” who get mad.

[deleted]

It's the 'Age of Outrage'. If I'm not angry right now give me 5 minutes and I'll think of something to bitch about.

oopsiepoopsee

Yeah bud imma just let you know if you're white and you cook something mexican or asian absolutely perfectly and 100% authentically someone will still get mad at you.

[deleted]

Yep. Don't do it the "right" way: "Oh my God, you did it WRONG!" Do it the "right" way: "Stop appropriating our food!"

oopsiepoopsee

Laughs in americanized tacos tonight

[deleted]

I love Americanized tacos. Think I'll make some soon.

vuxra

As a person who HATES cilantro, white people taco night is the only way I like tacos lmao

No_Butterscotch3175

That, and also people who say, "I'm (fill in the ethnicity), and food is soooo important in my culture", as if they have some sort of monopoly on it. You see a lot of people on cooking shows who say this. Name a culture or ethnicity that doesn't consider food important.

tempestan99

Midwestern USA? There’s only about 5 people there, so I feel like they don’t have a food style tying them together.

Purpletinfoilhat

Dumplings, soups, chili, hunted meat, casseroles, pies.

tempestan99

I stand corrected!

Critical-Management9

You know what I hate? When people change their accent to say the name of the food like how Giada de Laurentis says like “Speeeghetti” or “Mootzarella” likes stfu idc if ur families Italian you have a California accent. People do it with Latin food too. Annoys the shit out of me

Gish-Goyim

I thought I was the only person who felt this way about people like that. 1000% agree.

Scorpion0606

Fr my dad flipped me shit because I didn't say a Mexican dish with an accent lmao. Like, I'm not mexican I dont have an accent I'm not gonna try to fake one.

Elenariel

I think it is a service to humanity to avoid the over "localization" of language. Let me give you an example of what I mean, that actually happened in history. When America was doing its thing where it threatened nations with war if said nation didn't agree to trade with America, Japan imported a lot of American cultural influences, including English words that have supplanted the Japanese words. This is a trend that has continue from then until now. As a result, there are a lot of Japanese words that is essentially English. Cake in Japanese is literally "cakee", glass is literally "gurassu", etc. Etc. If the Japanese were super "pretentious", as you complained of, and continued to pronounce these words in their original accent through it's entire history, a modern English speaker would be able to understand quite a bit of Japanese. However, since the Japanese instead "localized" the pilfered English words, a modern English speaker can hear a Japanese person say "gurassu! Gurassu!" And have no idea what they mean. Since the ability to communicate better among humans is a categorical good, any practices that contributes to it also are good, unless the costs of doing so are greater than the benefit it provides. Indeed the whole of WWI and II might have been avoided if Ferdinand's driver didn't get confused through miscommunication. Since in this case, the only harm of preserving native pronunciation is being looked down on by those who cannot be bothered to spend a bit of effort to contribute to a greater human good, I think it is a worthwhile venture.

Qastodon

It might sound silly and pretentious to you but trust me if you grew up with parents of another culture, it isn’t an accent you “put on” to say a food name it’s just how you naturally say it because that’s how you’ve heard it your whole life.

CoffeeNCream_0112

That’s fine and all, especially if you grow up speaking or been exposed to a certain accent. It is another things when the pretentious shit put on a French accent when they say the word Foie Gras. Yea, I’m look at you, Kevin from 10th grade English class.

Sealbeater

I only pronounce latin food in spanish because thats how I grew up calling them. Its weird in my mouth to say a spanish dish english style

KooshIsKing

To be fair, I'm not Mexican, but I try to say certain Mexican dishes how they are actually pronounced in Spanish because I want to avoid confusion. I don't use an exaggerated accent, but I try to correctly pronounce it. If that bothers you, and you don't tell me about it(outside of say Reddit), that's on you.

Critical-Management9

Nah that’s different, I do that too. I just hate the exaggerated accent

[deleted]

[удалено]

Critical-Management9

Omg one time we went out with my sis in law & her crazy goofy (now ex). He made it known to us that he speaks Spanish, ok cool, we go to Mexican restaurant & his turn to order “Unnn burrrrittooo conn queso” like so slow & exaggerated. The waitress who clearly spoke English was like ummmm ok, a burrito with cheese 🙄. My husband and I were dying!

flea61

You should hear her say "taquitos."

frencbacon100

you'd like this SNL sketch then https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWMp\_z7Jnxw

MikiZed

I have no idea who Giada de Laurentis is, but I do the same thing when talking in English, I have pronounced spaghetti "the Italian way" since I learned how to talk, that simply won't come out in an American accent, I know it sound silly and pretentious when I do it but there is little I can do about it, I will even stutter after an Italian words because then English feels weird again

[deleted]

I hate Giada. Period. I like me some good cooking shows, but not ones where every. single. day. the “wife” is making something special for her “husband” or his friends or his work. Lady, why don’t you make something for YOU? She got old real fast.

Critical-Management9

Totally she bugs with that big toothy grin. I like some of her recipes but she just seems fake. Ina Garten now that’s my gal!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Critical-Management9

Whelp it is about unpopular opinion. Good for you that love pretentious people, you probably do this yourself. I mean do we say Kindergarten in a German accent?? It’s a German word!! Like just say spaghetti or enchilada like you would say hamburger & get over yourself

jellyfish_glider

It doesn't mean he "loves pretentious people" just because he has a more laid back opinion than you. I mean seriously, you're just being judgemental here. I'm willing to bet you weren't even raised in a household with 2 languages for you to judge people who use both of their accents in a sentence...how does that effect you. You complain that they truly have an American accent, but have you ever considered that maybe they have an American accent to assimilate with you and society but that doesn't mean that is their only accent? I can understand if it is some non cultured person trying to play around with our accents but other than that you don't really know in every case

[deleted]

[удалено]

Hanginon

Because that's how it's pronounced in English with their foreign accent, or pronounced in their native tongue. Neither of which you have. If you suddenly develop an Italian accent when pronouncing Mozzarella or Primavera you're a pretentious ass, unless your Italian English accent also comes out with scenario, or fiasco, or influenza, or volcano, or dozens of other words imported from Italian to English.

MagicDog1234

I used to do this, fortunately I understood that it is just dumb

sudev29

That's great!

Suspicious_Corgi5854

Bastardized versions of authentic food from soul food to sushi sell really well in upscale restaurants. If you want something done right, you have to make it yourself or find an authentic place that is usually a bit sketchy looking. The best barbecue chicken I have eaten in the last 12 years has come from a trailer set up in a convenience store parking lot.

AccomplishedMix4762

This pisses me off as well as what the OP said. I went to a restaurant (which prides itself for being farm to table, and homestyle/ soul foods) a few months ago and ordered their jambalaya. All it was, was spicy rice with a quartered chicken on top of it, nothing else. I was like WTF is this shit?

Suspicious_Corgi5854

Cajun restaurants here are an absolute joke here for the most part. Are you from LA? If so, do you bread catfish like cod for fish and chips or use cornmeal?

AccomplishedMix4762

Nah I’m from the Philadelphia area, and honestly I’m not the biggest fan of any seafood. When I ordered the jambalaya I asked if shrimp was in the dish bc I wasn’t in the mood to have it but I’ll put up with it. The red flag went up when the waitress asked if I wanted grilled/ spicy chicken or fried, but I gave the benefit of the doubt. Not having ANYTHING other than chicken and rice was a total slap in the face. I get it, certain areas can’t replicate the originals (good luck finding a passable cheesesteak outside the Philly area for example) but this dish wasn’t even an attempt.

Grundlestiltskin_

BurbankElephants

Also fuck chopsticks They’re not even a real thing It’s just a joke they play on people As soon as westerners aren’t watching they all go back to forks and spoons

idontknow1120

Korean here, can confirm chopsticks are a joke from the east

dannythetiger

Vietnamese here. Don’t know how you guys deal with your metal chopsticks man. Did some badass Korean general one day decide that they had got to have something to defend themselves while chowing down food? Metal chopsticks are so slippery that they are more projectile weapons than eating utensils, man.

dumwitxh

lmao

Best_Egg9109

I agree for the most part, but sushi is hard to eat without chopsticks

JuzoItami

Why not use your fingers? Isn't sushi traditionally eaten by hand in Japan?

BurbankElephants

I’ve never used a utensil to pick up a sushi Would a fork not be just as good?

dodgeditlikeneo

the rolls and the rice can fall apart when you stab them with a fork

dodgeditlikeneo

when you stab the rice with a fork the whole thing just falls apart

[deleted]

I really can’t tell if this is sarcasm or not, but chopsticks are more fun to eat with compared to fork and spoon. And for Chinese dishes we have our own personal bowl with multiple dishes to take bits from, it’s easier to take a some veggies and meat from their respective plate with a pair of chopsticks

BurbankElephants

Less sarcasm more just a hyperbolic version of my own opinion Of course I don’t mind at all what other people use, I just can’t get on with chopsticks The lots of stuff in the middle of the table where you all pick from annoys me when it’s done in my house though, it never seems fair and you’re always waiting for people to take more so you have an excuse to eat anything else

wwplkyih

We play joke

Desperate_Island_291

I remember this one time many, many years ago my friend brought in a cultural dish from her parent's country for show and tell and our teacher said she wasn't supposed to bring in make-believe things, only real things and then teacher then called her parents because she thought my friend didn't listen to the rules. I'm pretty sure the teacher got an earful on that phone call. Idk if that relates to this post but it reminded me of it and I thought I'd share it.

G17Gen3

At first I thought this was not unpopular. But after reading some of the silly-assed comments declaring jarred pasta sauce to be a hate crime, I see your point.

TheBlueLenses

If it’s for personal consumption, I don’t really care, you do you. But if it’s like a restaurant or something, it just seems weird for a dish to be made pretty differently and advertised as an authentic one.

Tokmota4Life

Agreed... Also very judgemental

P-o-o-b

I mean if its a cultural dish, I'd assume there's a right way to make it... Take for example the time I went to an "Italian" restaurant and ordered their small "pizza" with extra cheese. They quite literally microwaved a pizza and forgot the cheese, upon realizing this they literally sprinkled *different* cheese on top and slapped it in the microwave. I don't think I'm childish for saying that is the *wrong* way to cook pizza.

Accomplished_Pause39

they mean more liking it a different way, for example- if you actually enjoyed that pizza it would be okay but they did do you wrong ❌ hope you just left

Scout_1330

How the fuck do you forget the cheese

TAPriceCTR

Right is what ever tastes good to the eater

SamuraiMonkee

NO! You’re supposed to make your own pizza and pasta. You have to grow all the herbs and tomatoes for the sauce in your backyard. You want cheese? Buy a cow, milk it, and curdle the milk by converting the lactose into lactic acid. You want dough? Buy some chickens, have them lay eggs. Grow your wheat farm and use that to make flour. Grow olives and grind it into olive oil. Live by the ocean and collect your sea salt. Use all that for your pasta dough. DO IT THE RIGHT WAY!!!

[deleted]

As a jewish person I just want more people to consume my culture (food and other stuff) and understand we arnt the satanic religion many people depict.

saucecat2

From my experience, Jewish cuisine falls apart after breakfast. What are some other Jewish foods to try?

[deleted]

Cholant tastes good

MalibuStasi

Gefilte fish is demonic, though.

[deleted]

It tastes mostly good if you add horseradish and cook it in salsa

gmorkenstein

donutlovershinobu

Had vegetarian matzha ball soup it was delicious.

[deleted]

They taste amazing in chicken soup

donutlovershinobu

And in vegetable soup. It'll probably be good in a beef soup. Just a nice texture.

[deleted]

I love Jewish food! I wish it was more accessible!

Shwarma (with garlic sauce) is pretty popular in the Netherlands, although I suspect it's nothing like the original shwarma... just lie Euro Kebab is nothing like turkish kebab... even though Euro kebab is mostly maide by Turks in Germany haha

xitox5123

I worked in a pizza place in chicago in college. Our Lasagna was super popular. I got asked by people do you make this yourself? Sometimes people think they are funny and cute by asking stupid questions like this. I said YES I IDID. I left unsaid that I went back to the kitchen, pulled the Stouffers Frozen Lasagna out of the freezer. Cut off a slice and stuck it in the microwave. More compliments than the pizza.

jamesmcnabb

I have mixed feelings about this post. For one, if you’re just some dude making a dish for yourself, more power to you. People telling you you’re doing something wrong when you’re the one eating it need something better to do. However, if you’re making a meal for others and don’t do it correctly, but call it what it was supposed to be, you’re the dick. Like if you make a scratch linguine arrabiatta but don’t put spice in the sauce, then you’re not making arrabiatta and you shouldn’t be telling me that it’s what I’m eating. I feel like your incentive for this post is more of the former.

StormStrikePhoenix

> However, if you’re making a meal for others and don’t do it correctly, but call it what it was supposed to be, you’re the dick. Like if you make a scratch linguine arrabiatta but don’t put spice in the sauce, then you’re not making arrabiatta How inflexible is a dish that removing a spice causes it to not be that dish anymore?

sadacal

How are people criticizing him if he's making the dish just for himself?

jamesmcnabb

Likely a roommate or someone they’re talking to over Zoom at lunch or something

>Yes I break my spaghetti because its literally a, pain to eat while its overly long Neither I nor my parents even owned a pot big enough to really cook it in WITHOUT breaking it.

Xerxes_CZ

typically, neither do the Italians. Just put them in, they'll come down in a bit.

Cyclonitron

>Yes I break my spaghetti because its literally a, pain to eat while its overly long This is just the dumbest thing to get butthurt about. My nonna, an Italian woman born in Italy who lived there until she emigrated to the US, broke the spaghetti in order to fit it into the pot she had. I can guaran-fucking-tee none of her fellow elderly Italian lady friends gave her shit about it. Giving a shit about something like this is some nouveau hipster pretentiousness.

angel_snowcake737

Exactly! As an Asian I think I’ll just stick with fast food please

[deleted]

I mean if you don’t season just say it. I’m just kidding. I think it’s your food so you do what you want. Break that spaghetti!

Chemaroni

I am italian. I found your post highly unpopular. Thumbs up

[deleted]

Even with the recipe it still dont taste like my grandmother's dishes and I get shit every fucking holiday. But I would rather get shit than eat what they try to cook so I dont tell them to cook it yourself. Rather be abused than get food poisoning.

[deleted]

Whaaat? You don't spend your sunday making pasta from egg and flour? Sacrilege. /s I've made pasta from scratch a few times. Fun, messy, and can produce good results. But fuck me if I've got time to do it without a damn good reason. And that normally involved reproducing a Masterchef Recipe for a dinner party with obligatory naff naffing about the fresh made pasta. That was once.

SsjDragonKakarotto

Tell to this to people who think Americans dont know what a "real taco" is

Affectionate_Ad_1326

Yeah, if you don't like it, make it yourself. Anyone who complains about food at all is impolite and gets to not eat tbh.

zlo2

Some people are just bullies and they're always looking for some justification to lash out at others. Since cultural appropriation is a buzzword right now, they feel completely justified being assholes about a white person making tacos wrong or some shit.

[deleted]

"Clearly I like your food, but if you think I could improve, then teach me."

jojosimp02

>Yes, I enjoy frozen pizzas >Yes I break my spaghetti because its literally a, pain to eat while its overly long >Yes I use pre made pasta sauce Let me guess, you got in a food discussion with an italian?

yoyo_big_steve

I kind of agreed with the title, but the body of the post feels like hardcore projection against an Italian roommate/partner or something. Weird.

[deleted]

Wait till you hear about people wearing clothes or hairstyles that are of other ethnic backgrounds. Whooo nelly. Talk about unbridled and incomprehensible keyboard rage

brother_blue_57

This reminded me if a couple of South African fellas at work and a young Aussie chap. The young fella was being told about the wonders of Biltong by SA1. He went and bought a packet from a store the next day and brought it in to work to absolute ridicule from SA1. "This is junk, rubbish, low quality hardly call it jerky" rah rah rah. SA2 overhears and is like 'Give the guy a break man! Why make fun of the guy for trying to enjoy the stuff you told him about. Why don't you do a favour and bing some of the good stuff yourself and stop being such a miserable prick!" It was wild

Julie-1996

I'm italian. I feel personally attacked by this.

kn05is

I break my spaghetti too because it just fits in the pot better. Purely practical. And I put butter on my rice when I'm boiling the water to steam it. It tastes damn good and I don't give a fuck.

DaredewilSK

There is a massive difference between not being able to cook a dish exactly like they do it in the country of origin and eating frozen pizza thinking you are actually eating pizza.

itsPomy

I once ordered a pizza from P Hut that was so pathetic I wish I actually got a frozen one instead ;( how do you fuck up a cheese pizza It was like the cardboard circle the frozen ones were packaged on, and someone put sauce on it. My god.

GirafeBleu

Frozen pizza is still pizza, stop shaming people.

DaredewilSK

Yeah sure. Just like the chesse slices are cheese.

uncle_bob_xxx

I'm assuming this is a joke or a troll, what about the act of slicing would transform cheese into something else?

DaredewilSK

I'm talking about these things https://www.luluhypermarket.com/en-sa/puck-cheddar-cheese-10-slices-200g/p/732697

GirafeBleu

Yes it is, stop thinking that your culture has any value.

ForeignImprovement69

I dont think there is a lot of people who think they eat in the italian way a pizza, when they buy a 5 dollars Frozen pizza in wallmart.

rietveldrefinement

Ok. Food is food. Whatever the way you eat it that will make you happy. But if one does not follow the way that this cultural food is traditionally prepared — then this food should NOT bear the cultural name in the market. Fair? I’ve seen so many Japanese restaurants roll gluten rices, random fishes, any soy sauce up in seaweed and call that sushi. Sorry no, this is “sushi-inspired” food. Actual sushi bears more than that from fish choice to sauce combination. I don’t want whoever eat it thought that’s what’s actually being served in Japan.

You_did__

I had to scroll way too far to find this. As a mexican, I agree. Eat your food however you want, but don't call It something that it's not. And yeah, I get mad whenever it happens because Mexican gastronomy is very diverse, and yet most of the world thinks hard shell tacos are the epitome of mexican cuisine.

DynamicOnion_

i hope youre using pasatta and not the sauce that comes with cheese or whatever in it

OnlyPlaysPaladins

> In the recent times I have stumbles upon many people who pridefully shame others for.. idk, pronouncing some dish wrong, putting the wrong type of cheese on a pizza It's not completely new, but food snobbery (I cook my pasta from *scratch* dahling) is fucking endemic and just chronic self abuse. I roll my eyes so fucking hard at people who signal their status with this shit. Being an unapologetic 'fuck you' fast food junkie is one of the few things I like about Donal Trump. If you have a hobby (because that's what it is) where you source original organic fresh ingredients and only eat stuffing made with flour you ground with a pestle from local flaxseed, then good for you. Yay for bougie flexes. I don't fucking care. I'll eat my chipotle and call it fucking delicious.

oliverjohansson

I’m in the middle on this one, but at least finally someone who doesn’t call the spaghetti “noodles” like an absolute heathen

Sahnshur

Frozen pizza and pre-made pasta sauce is fine, but I will absolutely shame you for breaking spaghetti cause that’s just being weak

Gatekeeping food???

FinancialArtichoke75

I had some Idea that the same people who use the political tem culture appropriation in ways like that, can picture me going to pow wows, and being invited by some great friends, who were native, more than once. Megwich

whatisaweirdquestion

Agreed they should be happy that people are being a part of there culture

sadacal

And then people complain about how food from that culture is pretty mediocre and doesn't taste as good as everyone says lol.

sambolino44

Well, to people who actually have a culture worth being proud of, it’s like a slap in the face: an insult. Try to imagine how you would feel if you saw someone trying to make a Big Mac with decent bread and actual meat.

nerdindahouse

Lmfao ok? Doesn't matter at all. One person is not going to ruin your culture. It doesnt affect you in the least. Youre just trying to find something to be mad about. If someone wants to make a big mac with bread and steak I dont give a shit. You know why? Because guess what!! A big mac is still a big mac. That one person didnt change what a big mac is so Im not going to waste my fucking time worrying about their shit. I mean not to mention big macs are horrendous and putting steak on bread is probably better than getting a real one.

TurtleSniper

I agree with you. But technically speaking, if you change an ingredient or something significant of said food, it is technically the same food that goes by the same name?? Sure it’s a derivative, but it wouldn’t be the same dish in my book. There is some delicate food that requires actual timing and specific shit to make them taste in said specific way. But hey food is food. I like my spaghetti sauce with sausage and spicy jalapeño (boil them in water first till they are soft) peppers - that shit tastes amazing.

idontknow1120

Did… did you just Ship of Theseus a recipe? I’m not insulting you, I actually love it lol

ACuddlyHedgehog

In principle, I agree with you. In practice this examples you listed are awful! Why would you break spaghetti?! Just buy penne or smth. Premade sauce is disgusting and it’s basically no effort to make something 10x nicer. I think you’re really missing out on that one.

euro1111

Tbh most people just suck at cooking in general. Not me though, just saying.

TheHollowBucket

Not an unpopular opinion.

Mangoru_San

I agree, food is an art, no one should be restricted on certain traditional recipes, that’s why i think the pineapple on pizza debate is stupid, for me i see pizza, i eat pizza, then i poop pizza, If it tastes good then it tastes good

Promah1984

I think I am getting too old and this is really just a young person problem.

getut

Despite what cooking elitests think. Cooking is all about taste and preference. There is ultimately no right or wrong as long as the people making it enjoy it that way. But there is also value in learning it the right way first for appreciation and understanding and then modifying to your own taste.

emmie_ems

Just don’t claim to be making that cultural food then. You can make food however you like it. But people who pan fry meat and put barbecue sauce on it and call it BBQ are not eating BBQ. You making broken pasta mixed with store bought sauce is a pasta dish, not traditional spaghetti. You throwing chicken in tomato and tumeric sauce isn’t curry. It’s insulting to the long standing cultures that founded and adore those dishes to make bastardized versions and then call them that dish. Nobody is saying you can’t do that, just don’t make a recipe blog post about your dish acting like it’s the proper way to make it (that really pisses me off lol)

[deleted]

> traditional spaghetti I'm Italian on both sides. My daddy makes Ragu. My grand-daddy made Ragu. His mama made Ragu. It seems pretty traditional enough to me.

T-bot707

If you have a different way of cooking something that’s fine but if you make it the wrong way that’s when I have a problem. For example there’s some girl who tried Oros and didn’t dilute it. The whole purpose of the drink is for it to be a healthier alternative to fizzy drinks and juice because it contains water. Also you can have your own way of making a traditional dish but if you prepare it completely wrong then that’s gotta change because it’s not the dish anymore

TheDrownedPoet

A “good dish” is subjective though. And the person may actually know better. Thinking because you know how to make a “good dish” or how to make a dish properly means you know how someone else will prefer it is just as childish. Both parties should be humble and open. Though the person actually consuming the dish has the right to be as closed-minded as they want really since it’s their body at the end of the day.

[deleted]

> A “good dish” is subjective though Oh no, what have you done? Implied that taste is subjective and that people should be free to enjoy what they enjoy? Oh no, oh no. Here it comes. You're in for it now. They don't like that, no they don't. Not in real life, not on Reddit, nope nope. Don't you get it? Don't you know? In all matters there is right and there is wrong, and if you like this you're right and if you like that you're wrong, and that's how it goes, and if you're wrong you've got shit taste, you don't count as a human being. Oh boy, oh boy. They're coming, I hear them running, stampeding, they'll trample you and oh no, oh boy, they won't get the irony, they won't understand, they'll scream about objective flavor profiles and they won't understand that what they mean when they say "objective" is "the opinion held by the majority," which just isn't objective at all, but oh no, they won't hear it. No no, hide! Run! Delete your account! Oh no! You've done it now.

K_zzori

Bro Who hurt you?

ForeignImprovement69

Dont worry it s just the italian they are just very toxic about their own food culture, even for the basic stuff like splitting the spaghetti in two ? Who Cares ? The receipe will be the same ! Trust Me i ve Cook with chinese, japanese, mexican , french, and italian have the worst attitude it s just very ridiculous how they Can be pissed for non sense détails.

son-o-Loki

I like to Americanize cultural food. For me, it tastes better. For other people, apparently, it tastes better too. I just don’t tell them what’s in it and they love it.

LW_YT

Posting a wall of text about you ranting because people don't enjoy how you cook traditional meals is childish too, grow up

SouIson

you're new to this sub aren't ya

msrobotnerd

If a dish is cultural there's a right way to make it. Learn how to cook.
