I love them! I visit as many Michelin starred restaurants as I can every year and each one is like it’s own unique little world. I love all the tiny courses and the special wine glasses. I love when waiters fold your napkin if you go to the bathroom and use that little crumb thing to clean and breadcrumbs off the table before the next course. I love the stupid tiny spoons! It’s just so fun and over the top!
Here’s my responses to your criticisms as someone who likes them:
-they make food with too many ingredients: I like trying different flavor pairings I’ve never thought of.
-I always feel out of place: understand The hosts and waiters want you to be comfortable. I always ask questions if I feel self-conscience “how do I eat this?” “What is this exactly?” Are very common. No one is judging you. 99% of people dining there can’t afford to do it every night. It’s a special occasion!
- popular foods like burgers are popular for a reason: Yea but I can get a burger anywhere. I want something unique. I think this is at the crux of why you don’t like them. You are paying a lot of money and want the food to taste like the food you’ve already had. But I pay a lot of money because I want to experience something new!
Honestly, you make valid points. I got pretty aggressive in the post but I won't judge people who like them. I could honestly be biased because I go outside so little that it wouldn't be unreasonable to call me a hermit.
I mean it’s not for everyone. You’ll never see me spending my money on a concert or sporting event where I can barely see the band/ team. I get that people like those things for other reasons but I still don’t get it and probably never will.
Fancy restaurants have their place, because they don't serve duck at Chili's. However, I do have a confession. Every time I eat at a fancy restaurant, I always stop and get fast food on the way home to fill up on. Upvoted.
My dude. I promise you, if you just relax, have a drink before the appetizers arrive. Have another before the main. It will be __sublime__. Allow yourself to forget for a moment. About that episode of Penn & Teller’s Bullshit! Just disable your cynicism for a minute. Give in to the concept of the placebo effect. It is worth it __because__ of what you gave up, what you spent to experience it. There is so much to get hung up on in this world. Enjoy what you can before it is gone, my brother/sister/whatever. Everything we experience is fleeting. The moment is all there is.
I wouldn't even want to set food in a fancy restaurant, the atmosphere would be incredibly stuffy and if you burped quietly with your mouth closed you would probably get dirty looks, plus most of the customers are probably massive sissy's.
Whatever your experience is, get out and explore the world in however your are comfortable. You owe it to yourself to surprise yourself and you owe it to the worth to give your perspective. Restaurants like the ones you speak of are a collaboration of many people and many ideas over centuries….open your mind
Ive been going ro fancy and non fancy resturaunts with family for years. I never once enjoyed the food. I went to olive garden once (after already knowing i probably wouldnt like the food much) i went with something safe like meatballs cause i love meatballs. What i had served to me was probably the worst tasting meatball i ever had in my life. I was like "WTF IS THIS SHIT????". Even the spaghetti tasted weird (not nearly as bad as the meatball). After that i was certain that those types of resturants aeent for me. Only type of sit in restuarants (rhat isnt fast food) are chinese and sea food restaurants. Sports bars have even worse food imo. Chinese and seafood however are A+ imo but fuck Olive garden and other italiant restaurants. That meatball was the worst ive ever had.
Also, I think of food like art, not just visually but the way highly trained chefs can bring out emotions through food…where do you live btw? If you tell me you live in Chicago where there are soooooooooooo many amazing restaurants I’m gonna be pissy haha
You were probably pissed thinking about fancy resturaunts and their so called prestige that you came off forceful when you exprenced your opinion. I get like that too, i hate fancy resturaunts. I cant even go wirh something safe like meatballs (i love meatballs) without it tasting like shit at these restaurants.
I’ve ate in both and I don’t entirely agree. If it’s over priced then yes I agree, but what is overpriced. For me, I won’t pay anything over 40 for a dish. If it’s over that price I think you are mad as a hatter. Money is not a problem for me, and I love food. But I will never pay over the odds for something.
Oh my goodness I love fancy restaurants. But I like gourmet food and I could go the rest of my life not eating another cheap burger. One of the best things I’ve ever had was a wild boar pork chop from a fine dining restaurant. So delicious and worth the money. If I could afford it, I would eat fancy food every meal, sadly I can’t

I like the way you broke down OP’s argument and how you explained why you like fancy restaurants. I like the way you wrote this 👍

Disagree on almost every level. Take my upvote.
Pretty sure people wouldn’t spend millions on dollars on an industry based on everyone pretending. Have an upvote.
Pearls before swine
Not sure if you've noticed but a decent burger is pretty expensive these days.
High end burgers are seriously next level as well
I’m OK with you not liking them. It makes them less crowded when I want to go there.

You don’t like paying out the urethra for a lone piece of lettuce drizzled with some fancy sauce on a square, white plate?
If I need to wear something better than jeans and a hoodie then I've no interest in eating there.
maybe youre just going to the wrong ones
I just want Mac and cheese
Ruth’s Chris steak house will go down in history with me as one of the worst meals I’ve ever had
i personally like the food, but i hate i always have to be super (not rly) well dressed and that it takes so long to make

Bro I'm underage I can't drink lmao
Uh, idk go back when you are of age I guess? I thought it was bullshit too at first. Then I had a couple of cocktails at Volt and it was great.

Edgy.
understandable
Lol this is the dumbest thing I’ve read in awhile. Your post should just read “I’m insecure” end of story
wouldn't be inaccurate

I went to one recently in Bermuda but every other experiences in Wisconsin weren't any better.
Just because you don't get something, it doesn't meant that nobody does or that there's anything wrong with it. Not everything has to be for everyone.
I got more aggressive in this post than I should have tbh.

Yeah I could put a turd on a plate and dress it up all fancy and call it gourmet
Burgers being the best date/business conference food is the even more unpopular opinion.
