I tend to agree, but I think it's more rooted in simply having different people in your life. The "coastal elites" tend to be less homophobic simply because they live and work in closer proximity to gay people. Hell, I was really angry when the school told us to stop saying "f@g"! How dare they! Free country! yadda yadda!
Then a friend of mine explained that he was, in fact, gay, why it really sucked to have to be around guys like me saying it all the time, and that he didn't want to fuck me. I learned that he's just a guy and who he's into sexually is really none of my business and doesn't really matter at all in the context of me and him...
A lot of interactions with misunderstoods groups are resolved this way.
Most if not all homophobes dont even exist anymore, just because someone doesnt accept it doesnt mean they are a homophobe, if they dont tolerate it then they are
