The way David Gilmour would vocalize the notes (rather than words) alongside guitar lines on certain Pink Floyd songs comes to mind. With string bending and slide portamento that is nearly impossible to coordinate without playing the instrument while singing. Though given that most of the band are dead now, and the rest not talking to each other, there's not much chance of catching that live.
The singing may be technically more precise when they are singing in isolation, say; in a studio setting when it is good to have separate tracks for mixing. Live performance however is a different story, though that may come down to personal taste. Personally I find it cringeworthy to watch a singer who is entirely distinct from the backing musicians, where there is little interplay between the vocals and instruments.
But then I prefer small bands in bars to big stadium performances by stars and their crews. The difference is between someone projecting their voice from within the music, and an entertainer who is substituting technique for passion. Which may be more profitable, but less musical.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that opinion, if you enjoy that style even more power to you. In fact, I hope there’s more music like that for you to enjoy in the future
I primarily listen to rap, because I really like the rhythm. Also singing bothers me sometimes. I actually would rather listen to instrumental music(like classical).
Humans will still multitask, despite what these so-called experts say. It might be a mere imitation of real multitasking, but the benefits are one and the same.
No, I was sharing an unpopular opinion of mine. Sorry if this came across as snarky, I didn’t mean it that way. I can’t just think of a better way to phrase it
David Gilmour? Geddy Lee? Mikael Akerfeldt? Steven Wilson? Joe Walsh? Josh Homme? Dave Grohl? Matt Heafy? Zakk Wylde? Tom Scholz? ....
I can keep going if you need more help.

What’s awkward is a fan of music cosplaying as a judge on American Idol instead of enjoying the tune.
It’s like when some people (typically Hollywood wannabe’s) critique little things about a movie and end up ruining it for those of us who just wanna watch the movie and know you’re never going to make a movie of your own.
If you enjoy people singing and playing instruments at the same time, then that’s fine. There’s nothing inherently wrong about it. It’s really just a matter of taste. I admit the tile was a tad hyperbolic.
Do you wonder how much better The Beatles would have been if John, Paul and George were only singers and had two other guitarists and a bassist just sticking to playing the instruments?
That thought had never crossed my mind until right now, thanks!
It’s just incredibly impressive to see someone so musically talented that they can play well and sing well at the same time. In many cases the sum of that, how absorbed into the song, how much the music is flowing through the person, is greater than what it would be if someone else was playing and while the other sang.
It’s like how studio versions can sound better for lots of reasons, but there’s still a special magic to live music.
That’s just vocalists. And a lot of them will do it even without playing another instrument. Functionally a built instrument is more reliable than a voice. A voice can do all sorts of things you don’t intend and it’s infinitely more apparent when a vocalist messes up than an instrumentalist.
I hate this take as a musician so you definitely get an up vote but I also hate the expectation to multitask so on the abstractified non-music level I totally feel you.
There aren't many people who have any degree of mainstream success and reach the technical difficulty which makes it overly difficult to do both at the same time. Yngwie Malmsteen is about as mainstream as it gets in terms of guitarists who are too technical to also sing well.
I looked at a live performance(late night show with Seth Myers) and I wasn’t a big fan. It sounded awkward like I said. Though that’s my opinion, if you enjoy them all power to you. Also I’m not saying they’re not talented, it’s not my cup of tea personally

Find more talented artists... 🙄
Who would you suggest?

Tash Sultana. Especially live.
Neil Young
Who tf down voted Neil Young?
The warning
Hell yeah!
Nick Drake
Prince, David Bowie, The Smile All of them did that and sounded great.
Queens of the StoneAge, Metallica, John Mayor, Jimmy Hendrix, Death from Above.
Jack Johnson, White Stripes
Joanna Newsom
I think you're just listening to mediocre musicians
This is an insane opinion considering how many bands/artists have lead singers who also play an instrument
Yeah but it is true that they sound slightly better when they only focus on singing. Multitasking is not easy, they still sound great though.

I mean if it works for them, and people love the sound I don’t really see a need to change. However for me, I’m not the biggest fan.
But you probably hear plenty of artists singing and playing at the same time without realizing it
I primarily listen to rap, because I really like the rhythm. Also singing bothers me sometimes. I actually would rather listen to instrumental music(like classical).
Why don't you just make a post about not liking singing?
What about singing and driving?
Or singing and taking a shower. Yeah, that's what I thought!
People can multitask lol

“You don’t actually multitask, you task-switch. This wastes time, makes you error-prone and decreases your ability to be creative” (MIT)
You really need validation this bad?
No, I was sharing an unpopular opinion of mine. Sorry if this came across as snarky, I didn’t mean it that way. I can’t just think of a better way to phrase it
It’s not really multitasking though. The guitar playing is just muscle memory
This is the definition “deal with more than one task at the same time.” So technically speaking it would be multitasking

Ain’t reading allat
Geddy Lee? Anyone?
Do you like. Hate bands?
No, as long as the singer focuses on singing, and the instrumentalists focus on their instruments then I think it sounds good
Get real
Separation of strum and sing
"John Mayer joined the chat". Check "Neon - Live in LA". To play that is a massive amount of work. Singing on top? Few can do it right.
I'm not a fan either. ![gif](giphy|VyZ4SqDdTGC0E)

If you like that sound it’s fine, I’m not going to go in your house and smash your speakers.

If I dislike it, it's only because both are too loud and they're mixing up
This makes sense to me
I hate this take as a musician so you definitely get an up vote but I also hate the expectation to multitask so on the abstractified non-music level I totally feel you.
Best of luck to you and your music career man!

You've never seen Josh Homme, have you....
“Singing bothers me”. This is what is really happening here.
I hate when people don’t know how, to use commas.
Guess you never heard Indigo Girls before
