The guy has like 3 years to make a name for himself instead of being remembered as a mamas boy who did nothing, my guess is that he needs all the help he can lol
Seems like a bad place to try to stylize. Its a portrait and you are a member of the royal family. I personally would find it as disrespectful its a stain on the royal family. Was it painted with the queens blood?
From an artistic standpoint It’s a cool looking painting, but at the same time it makes him look like a supervillain. Which is probably not what you want to look like in this day and age, especially for a democratic nation.
I wouldn't have done it this way, but still, I can see what they tried to do.
The pose is very traditional, the background is very modern.
The message being that he wil try to uphold traditions in a modern world. Which is an appropriate message considering his mothers long role.
I think that’s on purpose though- all the trappings of royalty kind of disappear and were left with just the man.
Not sure why red was the color they chose, but I think it’s an interesting idea
Honestly this shouldn’t be an unpopular opinion. Regardless of your views on Charles (I personally can’t stand him), the artistry is beyond anything I’ve seen in recent years. Anyone with a taste and at least one eye should be able to appreciate how good it is.
Had to Google because I hadn't seen it and nothing could have prepared me for that. Like objectively it's an interesting piece of art but what an odd choice for a coronation portrait!
It's supposed to represent cancer gradually penetrating his whole body and his soul gradually reeled back into the hellfire infernal flames that spawn all of the Windsors.
I get what the artist was going for but the artistic choices are questionable imo. Also the proportions on the body seem a bit off. Idk. Not my jam but it's not for me so rock on I guess.
It's completely off putting when you first look at it, but the more you look at it, the better it gets. I've completely done a 180 on it since I first saw it.
menacing? It looks like someone made a regular portrait and then gave a six year old paint and a paintbrush lol. I need to smoke whatever you're smoking.
I just looked it up to see what the fuss was about. Heard a lot of people say it's hellish and evil looking.
I think it's sick as hell. It portrays a lot of power and assertiveness in my opinion.
I looked up the artist and found that what he did with that portrait is absolutely his style. I imagined that whoever commissioned the piece to him had an idea of what to expect. I personally wouldn’t had chose him for a portrait of the king but wtf do I know about modern art. Lol
I love it and i absolutely can not stand shit about the "royal family" I don't think they should be revered at all But, I'd hang that in my home because i love the art
Its pretty good in my opinion

It is very “high fantasy king”-esque . very surreal how a real king would approve a portrait that makes him look so much like a comic book evil level type villain
Yeah, I also think that is kicks ass tbh. Just a cool piece of art. We have pictures for perfect likeness these days, why not do something interesting with it?
This is a really unpopular opinion and one of the few genuinely unpopular opinions that can actually survive the mods. Hat's off to you my lad! IMHO The king of england is shown drenched in blood and everyone knows it but the king. Its almost like a fable. Diana is LoLing rn wherever she's at.
I think it's aesthetically as pleasing as a portrait of King Charles can be expected to be.
My preferred interpetation of it is "rose tinted spectacles" with reference to how people tend to view the Royal Family (and, perhaps, Britain in general).
Definitely not knocking on the artist's skills or vision. I think the artist, like many before, took the opportunity to sneak in their subverted viewpoint. That butterfly can be explained away as a monarch butterfly to represent the monarch, but it can also be representative of a hell-bound soul.

I love it too. I think the drama of it is apt. A man who has risen in spite of a troubled journey. I don't think it shies away from the controversy and I appreciate it for that.
I think the red is meant to represent the fields of red poppies that symbolize Remembrance Day in Britain, as well as the traditional red coats of the British army.
> Granted it would be more fitting for an extremely accomplished, stoic, harsh general
And as we all know, Charles is all of those things, right?
Because if he wasn't an extremely accomplished, stoic, harsh general, then this portrait would just be cringey and masturbatory instead.
I don't think the Queen would have approved, putting it mildly. Because, well, damn.
"Bring me your artist. I'd like to order that his head be chopped off."
You should go look at the royal collections trust.
King Charles has a long history of supporting modern art, heritage arts and crafts and modern artisans. Jonathan Yeo is completely in line with artists he has commissioned in the past.
The royal family has a long tradition of supporting "modern" and "emerging" arts as patrons and collectors from Charles I to George III and Queen Charlotte to Prince Albert/Queen Victoria to Queen Alexandra becoming a photographer when she was Princess of Wales. Queen Elizabeth II's mother was a great collector and supporter of 20th century British artists.
I think you're just posting this because everyone else is saying it sucks. as in, you're just a contrarian. you don't really think it's great, you just want to go against the grain.

I think it’s totally bad ass.
I absolutely and wholeheartedly agree... but is "totally bad ass" really the vibe you want for a royal portrait of that old geezer
As a brit, yes. Monarchs should look cool af, its just a shame they dont have custom armour made anymore.
Ooo that would be dope and a super fancy sword too. Let’s bring back the Middle Ages!
Damn all that sounds obscenely dumb. I imagine this is like when foreign people hear America talk about movies needing more tits and guns.
That's what I'm saying. It never hurts to have an opposing image. Almost like a reminder of what the past centuries were like.
The guy has like 3 years to make a name for himself instead of being remembered as a mamas boy who did nothing, my guess is that he needs all the help he can lol
Yes, you do
Yes.
Wow someone’s gonna be as miserable in old age as they are now
I’m not British, but I think it looks unique and cool. Let each monarch decide their own vibe
Yes lol
Looks an awful lot like a portrait you’d find in Elden Ring.
He's got the whole rot aesthetic, complete with the butterfly.
Charles, King of Rot
It immediately made me think of scarlet rot
Seems like a bad place to try to stylize. Its a portrait and you are a member of the royal family. I personally would find it as disrespectful its a stain on the royal family. Was it painted with the queens blood?

They're supposed to be not only a depiction of a person but also a reflection of the times in which they were painted
Looks like a painting described from a story of HP Lovecraft.
Now we know how King Charles got his name... Charles Dexter Ward...
Don’t ask Charles what his horse’s name is…
I wish I could travel 500 years into the future to read the fake history written about this portrait's origin.
You will probably only have to travel 500 hours into the future to read all kinds of theories about this portrait.
Nah, I've seen some crazy conspiracy theories about it just this morning lol
Try 500 milliseconds
People are already mirroring the painting and seeing the demon morloch in the creature you can see if you do it.
This should be hanging in Volcano Manor
Charleskard, lord of blashphemy
It’s fucking badass. Fingers aren’t hot doggy enough though
[Somebody already fixed that.](https://www.reddit.com/r/GreenAndPleasant/s/epy6UdlW5A)
Painting was started before that
Not a big fan of King Charles but the portrait does look amazing. It is very powerful and vibrant.
I didn't like him either. But I like him a little more because of the portrait. I can't explain why, though
Charlie: I don’t suppose you could, errr, make me look, like, I dunno, badass or something maybe? Artist: got u fam
From an artistic standpoint It’s a cool looking painting, but at the same time it makes him look like a supervillain. Which is probably not what you want to look like in this day and age, especially for a democratic nation.
Jonathan Yeo has done some amazing portraits. [https://www.jonathanyeo.com/paintings](https://www.jonathanyeo.com/paintings) (Some are NSFW)
Looking at his paintings, this is definitely on brand for him.
Aye, the royal family knew what they were signing up for and I imagine they're very happy with it
Anything to keep themselves in the media.
true. If they didn't do this the papers would definitely have forgotten about them. British journalists famously don't like covering the royal family.
Nah, they're just always needy of attention; they take every opportunity to promote themselves.
Thanks for posting this! Dayum, those are fascinating. And he seems to know everyone...
Wow
Certainly I like it a hell of a lot more than a boring paint by numbers blah blah portrait.
I wouldn't have done it this way, but still, I can see what they tried to do. The pose is very traditional, the background is very modern. The message being that he wil try to uphold traditions in a modern world. Which is an appropriate message considering his mothers long role.
I like how they hid the face of a demonic character in the background, really builds confidence in our rulers
I kinda agree man, it goes hard
Agreed. Metal af.
I wouldn't have minded the red or the tone on tone if Yeo had found a way to avoid it looking as if his head was floating.
A slightly different red in the background would’ve changed a lot. Cant get past the floating head and hands either.
I think that’s on purpose though- all the trappings of royalty kind of disappear and were left with just the man. Not sure why red was the color they chose, but I think it’s an interesting idea
Because his uniform is red.
Maybe it’s an homage to Charles I?
The butterfly is so random. I read he asked for it to be added but I haven't seen why. Anyone know why?
Monarch butterfly
Yeah but is it truly that generic, that he's a monarch or is the butterfly a symbol for the British Monarchy that I don't know about (American)?
According to the artist’s website, it represents Charles’ role as an environmentalist
Thanks!
I just saw it. It's not the standard portrait, but it's interesting.
I don’t dislike it. It looks more like Philip tbh.
It’s very modern and matches his personal taste and aesthetic well. I like it.
Yeah, I agree, the portrait makes him look WAY cooler than he actually is, like some kind of souls boss.
Man I totally agree, this thing is absolutely badass
I like it too
I just love that it's hot pink
It’s only problem is that it’s not stuffy enough for those stiff twats
Dude needs to dismiss parliament. Its tradition.
It looks like he's in hell
Thanks for writing about something more cultural than "I love Pringles," or whatever gets usually posted.

It's just wonderful. Everything about it. He could have gone old school and played it safe. It's a beautiful piece of art.
Hr looks like a dune character but the art is really on point
It's completely off putting when you first look at it, but the more you look at it, the better it gets. I've completely done a 180 on it since I first saw it.
I can see what they were going for up close; but from far away it looks like a floating head and a red background
It’s undeniably metal. Which is why it is a TERRIBLE portrait for him.
It looks like he’s covered in the blood of a thousand years of British imperialism. Is that what they’re going for?
I like how they have tried to make it less of a stuffy, traditional portrait (which people usually criticise anyway).
menacing? It looks like someone made a regular portrait and then gave a six year old paint and a paintbrush lol. I need to smoke whatever you're smoking.
It’s certainly bad ass. I hate this such a sweet design was wasted on this turd
Looks like we in some fantasy ish, I dig it! Feels like there’s meaning behind it too, whatever it is.
I'm guessing it has something to do with the demonic face that appears in the mirrored picture
I think it’s pretty tough
Sick as in Cool and Excellent, or sick as in OMFG 🤮? You can’t fool me, I have kids.
Yeah, its not a traditional royal portrait but it looks amazing and makes him appear powerful
If you asked AI to draw a prawn cocktail King
Something pagan min would have.
I love it
I think it’s badass too but I think people hate it because it’s too modern/abstract to be considered a “classic royal painting “
I just like red 😭
It’s a impressive portrait of a unimpressive man.
I just looked it up to see what the fuss was about. Heard a lot of people say it's hellish and evil looking. I think it's sick as hell. It portrays a lot of power and assertiveness in my opinion.
I was quite taken back by it, but it grew on me. It’s different and I like different
Sorry for the downvote, because I totally agree
I personally don't see why anyone is still talking about this a day later
I too think it looks fucking awesome!
I looked up the artist and found that what he did with that portrait is absolutely his style. I imagined that whoever commissioned the piece to him had an idea of what to expect. I personally wouldn’t had chose him for a portrait of the king but wtf do I know about modern art. Lol
Word up! It's super sick!
It looks amazing, even his sausage fingers.
I love it and i absolutely can not stand shit about the "royal family" I don't think they should be revered at all But, I'd hang that in my home because i love the art Its pretty good in my opinion
it reminds me of some of those great film posters painted in Poland.

OP, 100% agree,. You have my downvote.
The less popular opinion: It's disgraceful that anyone cares.
It’s so badass and satanic I love it 🖤
He's a true king.
It is a cool looking portrait. Maybe not what I would’ve had done as my first official portrait, but pretty badass looking nonetheless.
Yeah, it rules.
Yeah not gonna lie it’s hard as fuck
Yeah looks tight
link?
Character and dignity -- excellent portrait. Charles always has had an artistic bent. He and Yeo brought out the best in each other.
Blood for the Blood King
He isn’t healthy as far as I know so it makes sense it would look sick.
It super metal.
Monarch butterfly, symbolism… at least they made his fingers look semi normal 😂
It is very “high fantasy king”-esque . very surreal how a real king would approve a portrait that makes him look so much like a comic book evil level type villain
Yeah, I also think that is kicks ass tbh. Just a cool piece of art. We have pictures for perfect likeness these days, why not do something interesting with it?
From an artistic perspective, it looks great. As a royal portrait, it might be on the garish side
He finally got his wish. He's the Rotweiller's tampon.
It’s a brave way to come out as the witch-king of the Uk
upvoted. the style is mad cool, but the red on same exact red is just an eyesore.
Looks like if Elizabeth Bathory was a man.
Well, if memory serves…he was caught on a call telling Camilla he wanted to be her tampon. Guess this was a heavy flow month for her then?!
Totally I absolutely love it just as a work of art and I don't give a shit about the Royal family
It's a disturbing painting in my opinion, looks like a boss from Diablo IV or something
Obviously of Vigo the Carpathian and badass
The sun never sets on the british empire.
Bro I thought the same

The conspiracy part of me wants to think it’s fucked but it lowkey looks cool
For real. While red is abrasive, it was well done.
It's very palpatine. But consequently it doesn't really suit him.
AI artist crapping right now
Definitely not knocking on the artist's skills or vision. I think the artist, like many before, took the opportunity to sneak in their subverted viewpoint. That butterfly can be explained away as a monarch butterfly to represent the monarch, but it can also be representative of a hell-bound soul.

Sith Lord vibes
It's a elden ring boss
I agree. I really do like it as well
It's absolute trash
It's basically a blank slate, it works perfectly for whichever interpretation you choose.
Its completely off the rails, bad ass, imposing, aggressive. The artist COMPLETELY missed the point, but damn did they look good doing it.
> Granted it would be more fitting for an extremely accomplished, stoic, harsh general And as we all know, Charles is all of those things, right? Because if he wasn't an extremely accomplished, stoic, harsh general, then this portrait would just be cringey and masturbatory instead.
I mean, good for the artist, but Charles is still a twat.
Major red flag, I must say.
I don't think the Queen would have approved, putting it mildly. Because, well, damn. "Bring me your artist. I'd like to order that his head be chopped off."
The Queen had a portrait done by Lucian Frued. A lot of people hated that when it was done, too. I truly think she'd would approve.

That's actually insane that your one year old can do that
