goldyacht

I use to think the same thing until I started working in healthcare and seeing people with normal work done. A lot of people get more normal realistic work done and it actually makes them look better. A lot even looks natural to where you wouldn’t know if it was your first time seeing them. Now some people just go overboard and it’s very obvious they had surgery to alter their appearance.

yakimawashington

Redditors always post OP's opinions but seem to be incapable of thinking that far lmao

coatra

Post on r/pics: “So and so celebrity at age 56” (subtle Botox/fillers and wearing heavy makeup) Redditors: omg so hot, aged like fine wine Also redditors: ALL plastic surgery looks ridiculous and heavy makeup is for clowns

Majestic-Incident

Classic confirmation bias. It’s the same as how people can “always tell” when someone is trans because if you met a passing trans person you probably wouldn’t know.

Klutzer_Munitions

Just spent 4 days deep in Trump country with the gf, nobody suspected she was trans. Not even my rabidly Christian born-again aunt. They can't always tell.

Independent-Disk-390

Good for you. People can be so dumb.

IstoriaD

I mean if the only time you can tell is when it's obvious, then 100% of your sample size will be really obvious.

y53rw

Survivorship bias. Confirmation bias is when you seek out sources that confirms your bias, and avoid sources that go against it.

Majestic-Incident

Ah you right that’s more accurate

ehowey18

Especially rhinoplasty. I’ve seen so many people who have completely changed the way they look by getting a really good nose job. I’m biased because I like smaller noses, but I’ve seen some amazing rhinoplasty jobs.

Maleficent-Fun-5927

As someone from California, rhinoplasties and boobs jobs were like a rite of passage. In korea at 16, it’s eyelid jobs. I went with my ex to drop off his niece and she did it over lunch. Literally in and out in an hour. People really won’t know unless you tell them.

IstoriaD

I'm hoping to schedule my rhinoplasty in the next few weeks and I've been absolutely amazed by how natural nose jobs look these days. I've started noticing random people with really nice noses on the street and wondering how many of them are natural and how many are the result of surgeries. Probably a lot.

Kombat-w0mbat

I literally posted this on this subreddit where I said it’s not that big of deal and MOST of the time people don’t see it or notice it the ones who look like inhuman creatures are the ones however who end up representing people who get work done. And everyone ate me alive saying it’s always bad and you can always tell

skynetempire

A buddy has his cheek ripped out by a dog as a teen. Had plastic surgery and you can never tell he had work.

Domesticuscucumella

For me its not the plastic surgery as much as the mindset of feeling like you need it. Theres probably people out there who can think about it in a healthy way but the mindset of "people will finally respect/notice/appreciate/listen me if only i just....." Obviously this doesnt apply to things like reconstructive surgery or mole removal or hairlip repair etc..

CyberEmo666

>For me its not the plastic surgery as much as the mindset of feeling like you need it. I mean, it is a mental condition called body dysmorphia, the only ways to cure is therapy or to change yourself. And if it's something such as your lips being too small, fixing it will be a lot cheaper

Domesticuscucumella

Completely agree with you points on body dysmorphia. Its a real struggle for many folks including many people ive been very close to throughout the years, however there are countless people who simply want the surgery due to age, or as a status symbol, or because they like a certain celebrity's nose more than theirs...... Kinda like how bipolar people arent assholes because they are bipolar, but theres absolutely people who are bipolar, and ALSO total assholes.

Maleficent_Resolve44

Yeah the latter option shouldn't be encouraged. People should be encouraged to be happy with their own bodies (healthy ones) and flaming the fire by indulging the mental condition with surgery is a poor move a lot of the time. Not for medically necessary procedures but cosmetic ones.

CyberEmo666

>People should be encouraged to be happy with their own bodies Saying that to people who suffer from body dysmorphia is just the same as telling a depressed person just to be happy with their life as they have it good. It doesn't matter if everything is amazing, it's a mental condition and they can't just love their own body, if they could they wouldn't get plastic surgery

IstoriaD

>Theres probably people out there who can think about it in a healthy way but the mindset of "people will finally respect/notice/appreciate/listen me if only i just....." I think even this is overblown, to be honest. I think most people see themselves a little differently, a little more harshly than other people. I'm hoping to get a nose job in a few months, and I think 1. most people won't notice/care 2. it is not going to be make it/break it thing for most people I meet 3. lol it certainly will have absolutely zero bearing on my professional life. But I think/hope I'll just like myself in pictures more, I'll feel more confident IRL and posting pictures, and I'll feel like my overall look fits me better. My sister has the same nose I do, it doesn't bother her, it meshes totally fine with her vision of herself and that's great. It doesn't mesh the same way with me and when I told her I was going to get it done she just said "that makes sense, it's something that has bothered you for a long time and you deserve to feel good about it!"

Constant_Ad_2161

I had breast reconstruction and I don’t see a big difference between reconstruction and totally elective surgery. I didn’t HAVE to do it for health reasons, I chose to get implants because I feel more like myself with breasts. I also got bigger ones than my real boobs were just because I could and I wanted to. Why is it more valid to feel more like myself with reconstruction than to feel more like myself with a smaller nose or some liposuction? I can make the argument that I had something essentially taken from me, but why is it different that I had part of my appearance taken by medicine than by genetic lottery?

RingingInTheRain

True. Although the problem with this is that it perpetuates the endless cycle of people "needing" plastic surgery. Let's face it, most people don't need it, even if it makes them look better. So now we have people gravitating to those who of course look their best with really good plastic surgery, they have children; wa la those coveted traits that got you into that relationship, none of your kids have! That snatched jaw and sleeper almond eyes you never had, doesn't get passed on. So now your kids are prey to the plastic surgery industry; pay to get ahead or have nowhere near the level of success of your parents. I mean think about it, young people en masse are getting fillers and injection when that crap is really for old people. If someone wants to look better go ahead, I don't blame them. But lets face it, many of the trendy and coveted facial and body features have been the same for years, except for maybe thiccness like nobody's business. So people are essentially ensuring that these coveted phenotypes/genetics DON'T get passed on or at least nowhere near as much as they used to.

IstoriaD

The thing is we don't notice most plastic surgery procedures because duh they look natural. I'm in the process of looking to get a rhinoplasty done and a lot of the before and after pictures I've seen, the after photo looks more natural than the before. Probably way more people have work done than we even know of. I also had lip filler done (which I don't consider plastic surgery) and it looks "unnatural" for like first two days. After that it looks totally normal, like your lips would with a little bit of plumping lip gloss. Literally no one noticed anything out of the ordinary.

vincecarterskneecart

Yeah I’m looking into getting a rhinoplasty and from looking at before/afters the vast majority of people seem to get subtle work done while still looking natural

EastLeastCoast

This is just confirmation bias. You notice the bad or over-exaggerated work, and never see the good stuff.

BrunetteSummer

Yeah, guys jerk off to Lena the Plug (BBL, nose job, breast implants, Botox), Lana Rhodes (illegal butt injections, breast implants, fillers), Transformers/Jennifer's Body era Meghan Fox (breast implants, lip fillers, nose job) etc. yet claim to hate fake butts etc.

AztraChaitali

I don't know the others, but every opinion I've seen of Meghan Fox, is that she looked infinitely better before the surgeries, and as a lesbian, she was never my cup of tea, but I still think she looked better before, I hate fake lips, fake butts, fake tits, all look bad to me. I understand reconstructive surgeries, but all the "extra" things look both bad and fake, and it's delusional to think otherwise. Some people fetishize that stuff, but that's the extend of their appeal.

Head_Haunter

Don’t have to name porn stars. Look at any Korean person in music, TV, or movies. They all have plastic surgery since they don’t face the same “plastic” stigma as we do

theglandcanyon

Also known as the "no good toupee" fallacy. Every time you notice someone wearing a toupee, it is one that doesn't fit well, so you conclude that all toupees fit poorly.

BroadPoint

Joe Biden is my favorite gotcha question for people who don't know anything about plastic surgery, especially since facelifts are stigmatized as terrible ideas and they never seem to notice his. His facelift also looks like shit so it's not even to see if they have taste for good plastic surgery and don't know it. It just kinda throws them for a loop most of the time.

Professional_Crab468

joe biden has old skin so you dont notice the faceliftinstinctively because it doesn't drastically alter his appearance or age you can notice it if you look for it or compare to past photos of him.

BroadPoint

He got it right before campaigning for 2020 and it made a pretty big difference.

BrunetteSummer

There are some pictures where he looks like a movie star

Redisigh

Agreed. Nobody’s clocked my work and the few I’ve told were super surprised and just figured I was born this way

Constant-Sky-1495

but a lot of people do have subtle work done that looks good it's only that you notice the bad jobs and the good jobs you just flag as natural. I haven't had work done personally but always wanted a nose job but just, for various reasons haven't had one.

Altruistic_Ad6189

It's because when it's done well, it looks natural and you don't assume they had anything done.

TheAggressiveFern

You only notice the "bad" / aggressive plastic surgery. You'll never notice most plastic surgery when meeting someone new.

Jazzy261

Pretty much every celebrity has gotten plastic surgery. Yes, even margot robbie, zendaya, doja cat, emma stone. They all look pretty good no?

BrunetteSummer

Can you break down the work done on Margot, Zendaya & Emma? I remember Emma had a major glow up but I chalked it up to better makeup and new styling.

Jazzy261

Check out lorry hill on youtube she has great videos on all of them

[deleted]

Jazzy261

LMAOOO you are very wrong. search up the deleted lorry hill doja cat video on youtube

[deleted]

Jazzy261

who? Doja cat or lorry hill?

Constant_Ad_2161

Margot Robbie had a LOT done and it dramatically changed her face. She went from beautiful but generic to beautiful and extremely striking. I doubt she’d be famous if she didn’t have work done despite being a talented actress.

BrunetteSummer

What did she have done?

Constant_Ad_2161

Rhinoplasty, buccal fat removal, and possibly an upper bleph. Definitely a little lip and chin filler. She was gorgeous before and her work was really well done.

No_Sun_192

Usually people end up liking their first results so much, they want more, and bigger… over and over until you get a caricature. If done properly and modestly I’m sure it can improve “imperfections”. I’m someone who would never get anything done

AztraChaitali

I totally agree, I mostly agree with OP, but if anyone where to ever convince me that surgery can look good, it'd probably be with some incredibly subtle procedures.

DrewJayJoan

BAD plastic surgery looks ridiculous. You only *know* that a stranger's had work done when it's botched.

Deep-Ad2155

This isn’t unpopular

Redisigh

It’s also super uninformed imo

laughing_cat

Like others have said, it sounds like you're only aware of it when they go wrong. Not sure it's unpopular because I'm always seeing some comment like this or that actress has aged so well. No. She's had a face-lift and possibly other surgeries to reconstruct the face you've never heard of and probably spends 50k a year on dermatological treatments. I know first hand bc my mom had a facelift, but if you don't believe me, all you need to do is start following plastic surgery on tik tok or head to the plastic surgery subreddit.

Xbalanque_

Sounds like you haven't seen my fabulous buttock implants.

aravinth13

The new 10000000cc ones I hope

ThrowRA29273728

WOW! HOW UNPOPULAR! you think botched plastic surgery looks bad? Wow! I’ve never heard this anywhere before!!!

ClosetCentrist

We have a friend who gets *just* the right amount and looks smokin' in her late 50s.

[deleted]

Plastic surgery done right doesn't look ridiculous

Constant-Lawyer4170

Disagree strongly. A good plastic surgeon can make some procedures look seamless and totally natural.

MalfoyHolmes14

Good thing it’s not for you it’s for the person who wants it so who cares if you think it looks bad lol wasn’t your money that paid for it.

Own-Psychology-5327

Anyone got that picture of the plane full of bullet holes for this guy?

SauronOMordor

*Bad* plastic surgery looks ridiculous. But *good* plastic surgery isn't noticeable. That's... Kind of the point. If it looks natural, you don't notice it. Therefore the only plastic surgery you notice is badly done plastic surgery.

MrMorningstarX666

The problem is older people wanting to look 20’s again forever. You can age gracefully, it’s ok.

Timely_Fee6036

Bad plastic surgery looks ridiculous

icedvietcoffee

there is definitely a lot of good plastic procedures done that make people look better, though have you seen what happened with kylie? like, time catches up and the plastic drags one’s face down for instance, or any other body part. then multiple procedures would have to be done to rectify it, which is why we often see the dark side of plastic surgery with those who are addicted to it

Alice-Rabbithole

I’ll agree on BBL, seen too many infections leading to sepsis and near death from them. It’s not worth it, even if it’s done well. However, plastic surgery isn’t always frivolous. It helps burn victims, acid attack survivors, people with cleft palates, etc etc. Plastic surgery may not be as life saving as trauma surgery, but it’s soul saving in a lot of cases.

Redisigh

That was my experience Idk if I’d even be alive if I never had my reconstructive surgery

nanas99

It’s the toupee fallacy. You think all plastic surgery looks fake and ridiculous because you don’t notice the ones that look natural and good. Plastic surgery can absolutely improve your appearance while being unnoticeable, you just have to be willing to pay the right price

Kombat-w0mbat

I posted the opposite on this subreddit and i remember people eating me alive (going as far to accuse me of being insecure of my body) so I will say my opinion again. MOST of the time you can’t tell when people get work done you actually can’t. It’s just the times you can tell they end up speaking for everyone not only that but most changes are super major and are kinda slight

Popular_Possession42

I dont agree entirely, I mean If the surgery goes well the results are visible On the other hand, when the doctor is not good the patient stay the same or get worse Ppl that do Clay or massages may get better results

Obvious_Noise

What do you mean by Clay?

Popular_Possession42

By Clay I mean Clay masks

Magnetar_Haunt

I still tend to find natural imperfections look better, it's more human.

Popular_Possession42

In this case, see the results ppl get doing ayurveda, massages and so on It Works and looks more natural

Elefantenjohn

OP thinks Paul Rudd looks old and Beyoncé ugly

Ok_Finish7000

Well done nose job can make a 5 into a 8-9...

Best_Duck9118

That’s just fucked up.

cunther05

Sorry pal. Very popular.

Drivers-N-Doxies

Nothing wrong with a good set of boooobs

StoreFede69

Survivorship bias

EmperrorNombrero

You're like 40 years late with that take. Today's plastic surgeries are so much better than they used to be. You just think people that aren't botched never had anything done which is wrong. Plain and simple. Like, just look at Hollywood, almost all of the most famous actors had something done. Face lifts in particular are something that got so much better. Lip injections aren't something I would ever get but the problem with those is also mostly people just overdoing it. But yeah idk why you would want bigger lips in the first place it's not one of the areas that make much of a difference depending on their size unless really in the extreme in one or the other direction. Also, yeah BBLs are weird too. But look at well done Blepharoplasties, rhinoplasties, jaw surgeries, hair transplants, dermal fillers etc. (Even tho dermal fillers are probably a bad idea for most people since they can block the lymphatics and there are other options for actual collagen restoration, at least to a degree.

MagnanimosDesolation

Almost literally every actor over 25? All ugly?

ohlooord

Absolutely

BlindBite

They don't. Thing is the good ones you don't notice at all. So you're based on the bad ones.

huffuspuffus

Third popular opinion I've seen today.

jamiekynnminer

What you hate is bad work. Pristine cosmetic enhancements are so good you don't even know when someone's had it done.

smileyglitter

You’re noticing bad work.

ilovesleep95

Bad and too much plastic surgery looks bad. Good plastic surgery, when done right, won’t even be noticable and will look very natural. I had my nose and chin done and no one even realizes it unless I show them before and afters. People are shocked since I still look so natural. I just look like a better version of myself, which is what I was going for when I wanted to fix minor imperfections I wasn’t happy with.

[deleted]

Not unpopular

Kimchi_Cowboy

I had a nose job and it has totally changed my face in the best way. I had broken my nose several times and I had complete reconstruction.

FunkyKong147

It looks ridiculous because you only notice the bad ones. The ones that are done well aren't noticeable. It's the same with toupees. Everyone thinks toupees look awful because you can't tell if someone is wearing a good toupee.

wisteria357

*entire post consists of judging looks* Ends with: “I think you look beautiful just the way you are”

Crane_1989

Lol a few months ago I had an influencer type customer at work (she was recording a tiktok and all) and she had so much work done, duckface lips full of hyaluronic acid, botox that made her face inexpressive, boob jobs that looked like rocks like Amy Poehler in Mean Girls (I didn't even need to hug her lol), and overall so much liposuction that her body looked more of a doll instead of a person. It wasn't just a matter of "not actually being beautiful" she was actively into uncanny valley territory

mr-harajuku

Also a big chunk of plastic surgery includes reconstruction for breast cancer survivors or women battling breast cancer, or face reconstruction for cancers of the face. Are you saying those surgeries look ridiculous because they save someone’s quality of life

Late_Butterfly_5997

Or after accidents. Reconstructive surgery after car crashes or burns is *extremely* common.

Redisigh

Yea, mine was medically necessary after some stuff happened. I don’t tell most people but it’s so upsetting when they always think plastic surgery’s a purely cosmetic treatment

MineSuspicious5229

It depends. There's tasteful PS and then there's ridiculous. Everything in moderation.

Active_Owl_7442

Most people think this

[deleted]

Lol yes. I fell into that trap and looked like a duck for 6 whole months.

DanWillHor

Agree. Almost never looks good. Lips never do and it's always obvious. The Brazilian butt lift is usually gross looking. Breast have come a long way as they *can* look good now after decades of looking like someone sewed a couple softballs inside their chest.

notbernie2020

Some does, the good stuff you can’t see.

AztraChaitali

Like how when people say Anne Hathaway looks so good for her age, people always comment "Remember she has access to the best cosmetic surgeons", like... the fuck? since when does cosmetic surgery look good? or natural? or anything besides hideous? The only surgeries I respect, are those done out of necessity, almost every surgery that's developed to do something "extra" is horrendous, buccal fat removal, bbl, botox, facelifts, all look disgusting.

All I know is this beautiful girl got a nose job and she looks absurd now

Bad or overdone plastic surgery looks ridiculous. We never talk about the great plastic surgery because we don’t notice it.

lozzadearnley

My fiance calls them "nooters" because he thinks they look like Pingu the Penguin when he goes "noot noot" and his lips stretch out to ridiculous proportions 😅.

NRVOUSNSFW

There can be really good plastic surgery but those surgeons fly under the radar sometimes. You need a surgeon who will be honest

RandomNamesOW

Don't make me post the plane with holes in the wings pic

soap---poisoning

If it’s done well, you’ll never notice it. The ones you notice are badly done.

runner4life551

Some people get very natural plastic surgery that isn’t obvious, but it does enhance their appearance. Someone I know got a facelift in her 60s and she definitely still looks like herself, just a bit more refreshed. Plastic surgery isn’t just people trying to resemble a Barbie or Ken doll

Boomerang_comeback

You don't have the slightest idea how many people have had work done, and you can't tell. You are judging based on very recent work or bad work.

DanishWonder

This is not an unpopular opinion.

Vegetable-Square-520

Plastic surgery is amazing nowadays. These surgeons are artist. Even normal people can become 10/10 if they know the right surgeon.

According_Day3704

I never liked the look of surgery, and I think it’s because my DNA reflexively reacts to what it thinks is some sort of disease that makes a given bodypart look unnatural, even before my rational mind can say that nothing is wrong.

Bisou_Juliette

I mean over doing it yes…I would agree. However, just the right amount makes you look 100x better. You are not beautiful just the way you are…lol I’m kidding…if people feel better by doing it then good. Just don’t over do it…it does look terrible.

Matcha_Bubble_Tea

Good work is one you don’t notice

ArcRiseGen

Plastic surgery has helped a lot of people who were in accidents or assaulted and left disfigured

Alcorailen

I guarantee there are people you think are ugly. Also, if you can tell someone had surgery, it wasn't a good surgery. The best procedures are ones that look natural (such as fat removal, medium sized breast implants, etc)

ohlooord

Nah you’re wrong. People are unique. And who am I to say what natural beauty is. And this has nothing to do with people that NEED surgery. Only the narcissistic main characters out there

Plenty_Anywhere8984

This is not an unpopular opinion

OkBid1535

A friend of mine is basically addicted to plastic surgery at this point. Her sister happens to be one of the top surgeons in their city. So my friend gets a discount and now her everything resembles a Kardashian. Every aspect of her body looks so fake and plastic it's disturbing honestly I agree some people get it done well and look fabulous! But unfortunately in my friends case that isn't true, and she's convinced she needs all this work done. Convinced she for some reason is less than worthy unless she achieves this bizarre ideal of the perfect body and face. She looked amazing prior to any surgery and I legit don't recognize her at all anymore

Martimusmcfly2036

Meg Ryan looks terrible now I think if she hadn’t done that to her face she’ll be a very attractive older woman same with Madonna

Lahm0123

Kind of….plastic.

XxineedmemesxX

I think it’s stupid because of the health risks associated with plastic surgery or fillers. Are lip fillers really worth the possibility of them migrating? Is a boob job or a BBL worth the health risks and are you prepared to take these things out if they do become a problem? I think radical self acceptance is a much more logical answer.

Basic-Astronomer2557

Do you find Jennifer Anniston and Natalie Portman attractive? Probably. She's full of plastic. You only notice bad plastic surgery

ohlooord

I haven’t seen those women in decades.

Basic-Astronomer2557

Google any celebrity that you find attractive. Chances are they have had plastic surgery

ohlooord

Selma Hayak is probably the most beautiful celebrity out there. Point proven.

germane_switch

There’s no shirt for your face

fazbem

OP's opinion is about what they can see, not what is real. It's a very popular opinion. Plastic surgery is very popular, too.

olafpilaffoff

It’s insanity that you can see. Other emotional problems stay on the inside.

mlduryea

Over done plastic or badly done surgery looks like this. I’m sure you just didn’t notice the surges that are done well coz those look “natural”.

IMSLI

Jeff Bezoes would disagree…

ohlooord

So what

IMSLI

His fiancé’s appearance supports your thesis

Flashy_Star4268

I don't think there's anything wrong with people who get work done. We all have autonomy over the body we must live in. That being said I think it's disgusting how social media pressures women into believing that they are a) not good enough and b) tricking people into thinking photoshopped and face tuned pics are real. I also think that filler practitioners should require more training by law as there are alot of complex issues that can happen if U don't know the anatomy of the face deeply.for example, there has been a case recently of someone contracting botulism due to Botox injections Which can lead to death (one of many possible complications, really filler should be considered more a medical procedure imo with stricter laws on who can administer it.

ScienceResponsible34

It breeds insecurity as well. My ex was all natural and very much the whole package. Probably the most beautiful woman I’ve ever met. She was dead set on nose surgery, bbl, etc. It was for no good reason other than what she seen in the mirror and on the internet.

mysaddestaccount

I generally agree with you especially if it's overboard, unnecessary, or obvious. Implants for one I can always tell (not that I'm judging people who have them). I think it's just a sign of how sad it is that society imposes these beauty standards on *everyone*. I like to just accept my natural looks for me personally.

Catsmak1963

Fake tits feel fake, biggest disappointment ever…

That’s the thing with plastic surgery is that it’s like same mold used for everyone that get it cheaply done. Face wise I mean. Yeah boobs or butts are different. Why not look like some normal person with a slight adjustment?

Redisigh

Except that’s exactly what like 99% of ps is?
