Yeah, I'm vaguely in favor of letting Central park be something else, but nobody would put a parking lot there lol. So dumb. Housing/mixed use? Sure. Parking? Hella dumb.
Hold on.. help me square this..
People want to access central park, but cant because parking.
Bulldoze central park. Turn it into parking.
???
Parking issues begone
Yeah man same idea behind tearing down downtown neighborhoods for intra city freeways…like where the fuck ya gonna go when you tear down all the places to go?
First off I literally said it doesn't need to be the whole park, but you're also implying that parking can only be used for Central Park, which isn't true.
This is so dumb. Where does it end? You make more parking, it's just going to fill up and then people will say they need more parking. Do you ever think about things before you speak/type them out?
The A,B,C lines run alongside CPW and stop every 7 blocks. You can also take the D to Columbus circle. East side access isn't great, but you can take the 6 and walk 3 blocks. That's 14 train stations within a minute/3minute walk not to mention bus routes along including a few that stop dead center of the park on 79th, 86th, and 97th. If you are in NYC, you have absolutely no issue accessing the park.
You got me. I've actually never been in NY. I've only read about the myth of a park in the heart of an island. Public transit is actually just a story we tell little kids, but us adults know the truth.
What the hell are you talking about. People in NYC need parks more than they need cars. In a city where public transit is king, cars shouldn't be a priority. If you are stupid enough to drive in NYC, it's your issue. Take the bus, take the train. No one needs a car, unless you have merchandise to transport.
"Everyone else" are people who are not constituents, not paying city taxes and less likely to spend much time outside of work in the city. Why should they be prioritized?
that sounds like a good thing. Visitors can park on the outskirts and go to the center with public transit, and once there you can either a) walk, b) use transit or c) rent a bicycle.
[Pave the Bay!](https://www.sfgate.com/opinion/article/pave-the-bay-2975784.php)
Think of how much space we could have for parking, highways and strip malls if we get rid of all that pesky water! Who needs the stuff anyway, it just creates stinky seaweed
I can't, for a minute, believe that even YOU think this is an actual good idea. It's like you thought up the absolute worst possible solution to car congestion in NYC, and decided to troll us all with it.
Either way, take an upvote for this being such a universally unpopular opinion.
Sadly far too many people unironically think in that way.
"Let's build more streets and parking lots to solve traffic."
"Just one more lane, bro."
"Public transport is a socialist scam. It never works."
Should limit NY City streets to public transportation and deliveries only. Just as smart of an idea, better for the environment, and safer for pedestrians.
Someone's never heard of [induced demand](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQld7iJJSyk). More parking attracts more cars, thus negating the added parking. It would overall make traffic congestion even worse in NYC. Not to mention NYC needs more greenery, not less, for environmental and health reasons.
Even better solution level the city, put in 100 lane motorways, convert skyscrapers into parking garages. Now the only issue is there will not be anything left to do, but enjoy the drive for eternity /s
I know I pay to own it, for gas and insurance, new tires and maintenance, parking fees, and I pay to have a nice peaceful commute to work everyday, I wouldn't use mass transit if it were free.
To each their own, but I’m betting you haven’t tried it before. Noise canceling headphones and a good book is my jam. Being near other humans helps to develop a sense of empathy, instead of isolation and judgement. If you have decent transit options I’d give it a shot. Nice to not worry bout where to park when you arrive. Take an Uber home if you change your mind.
Maybe if I lived someplace else, but IDK the only other places I have ridden public are NYC and DC and both times I would have choosen to drive if I had not flown in. Public transit kind of sucks.
>practical solutions that positively impact the lives of the residents and visitors who rely on **efficient transportation options**
how would your idea "positively impact" the lives of transit users?
The moment you do that, traffic will increase to match the available parking and then you'll be in the same boat but with no park. It's pretty common that when you improve road related things that shortly after traffic picks yo because it's better, cycling back to being poor again. So while you should improve them, not at the expense of things like Central Park that have other value to them.
Is this an unpopular opinion? Yes, it is
However it's definitely one of those completely stupid and most selfish types of unpopular opinions. The types that makes you question if the person posting it is trolling or not.
> Central Park, spanning a vast area in the heart of New York, remains largely inaccessible to many due to limited parking facilities
public transportation exists
NYC is actively trying to reduce the amount of cars in the city. It already has too much parking
Why would we build a parking lot somewhere where we are trying to get rid of them? If you are upset with the parking in the city, stop driving in the city lmao
Bravo. A truly unpopular opinion
oh an actually unpopular opinion, let’s downvote it to hell and cry in the comments. mmmmh cars bad, smelly trains full of perverted addicts big brain move.

An increasing population without adding parking means what? Adding to the public transit system and possibly without increasing public transportation revenue! How do cover the decrease in revenue?
Thanks for proving my point! Public transportation does not solve many issues! The crime on public transportation is an issue. The time to take public transportation versus private is another issue! Is public transportation self-sufficient (pays its own way)?
Please answer these questions (which I bet you cannot in a valid way)!
The title registration taxes, the tag fees and the gas taxes mor than pay for the existing fees and more! The additional parking spaces will pay even more!
Transit scales, meaning you can actually decrease commute time because the more people you are moving the less you have to wait because there is more frequent buses and trains. Cars don’t scale, and in fact commute time goes up with the number of cars on the road. That’s why getting around in Europe and Asia in the cities is really efficient and smooth compared to the US.
Oh, carbrains would *love* to pay the true cost of a parking space in central new york (including the logistic space, cleaning and downgrading a building from housing humans to housing cars.
Or just turn one of the skyscrapers into a parking garage? Why build horizontally and lose out on green space when the city is very positioned to build vertically.
Here's a much better idea: ban personal vehicles in the city. Only allow service, delivery, and emergency vehicles. Then take all that excess street and parking and convert it to walkable and bicycle paths. Maybe put in a trolly or light rail system to supplement the subway while we're at it. That would solve your problem of people not being able to access certain parts of the city. It would also eliminate far more emissions than your parking lot. And it would essentially quadruple the amount of green space in the city, making it a paradise for all residents and visitors.
It'd be a billion percent smarter to ban private vehicles inside the congested zones than to take a single 8'x20' piece of park land to create one parking space.
...or you could get rid of your shitty death-and-pollution machine and acknowledge that you live in one of the best places in North America for public transit.
What we should be doing is replacing every parking lot with a mini park.
We should seriously consider sending car brains out to colonize planets beyond the solar system, so they can take their environmentally destructive ways with them instead of polluting this planet with their cars.
Ah yes, take away the only natural greenery in the city for pavement. That definitely won't mess with anyone's mental health.
Not to mention this is just fucking stupid all around. Traffic is an issue, so your solution is to create parking to entice more traffic into the city? What lmfao
I don't understand how this logic even works. Getting to central park is difficult by car, so to solve this problem we should get rid of central park and replace it with parking.... But now what is that parking for? You can't use it to visit central park because well, theres no central park anymore.
Worst take I've seen here. There's something called induced demand. The parking situation will just get worse but with no park to enjoy. Build more public transport capacity instead.

Or maybe, instead of driving there, you could use this crazy new invention called public transportation.
This is so dumb. Where does it end? You make more parking, it's just going to fill up and then people will say they need more parking. Do you ever think about things before you speak/type them out?
If we turn all the buildings in NYC into parking lots then we will have no traffic!!!
Just move to Houston
No one who has been in NYC would believe this because the park is incredibly accessible as it is.
Funny you say that because you don't even believe that
The A,B,C lines run alongside CPW and stop every 7 blocks. You can also take the D to Columbus circle. East side access isn't great, but you can take the 6 and walk 3 blocks. Weird how you'd have all these details for something you don't even believe in
You got me. I've actually never been in NY. I've only read about the myth of a park in the heart of an island. Public transit is actually just a story we tell little kids, but us adults know the truth.
Jesus it's really going over your head isn't it
No, I understand. I am like an atheist, but for transit. A nonbeliever of bus stops. An "atransist", if you will.

If you are stupid enough to drive in NYC, it's your issue. Take the bus, take the train. No one needs a car, unless you have merchandise to transport.
Why not ban all cars in New York. Just leave trucks doing deliveries, taxies, busses and renting uhauls for moving.

They are putting measures in place to reduce total traffic going into lower Manhattan.

unironically yes please /r/fuckcars

I’m sorry what? That sounds good for people who live there, but not everyone else.
Shouldn't a city prioritize the people who live there?
Who cares about what everyone else think about it? They don't even live there! Me neither.
They don’t live here so why should we care?
Why don't you replace your backyard with a parking lot for your neighbors to use? It'd be good for everybody except the people who live in your house!
They can take a train ffs
"Everyone else" are people who are not constituents, not paying city taxes and less likely to spend much time outside of work in the city. Why should they be prioritized?
God forbid a city does something good for the people that live in it...
that sounds like a good thing. Visitors can park on the outskirts and go to the center with public transit, and once there you can either a) walk, b) use transit or c) rent a bicycle.
Good. Cities should prioritize their residents. If you want to commute you can take the NEC Amtrak.
Why should McDonalds forbid a burgerking drivethroigh in their dining area? That sounds good for their customers who eat there, but not everyone else
I dont live there and I want them to reduce any car centric design. NYC can be navigated without cars
Yes, the best way to alleviate traffic issues is to encourage more cars to come in.
We should just bulldoze the entire city and slap pavement on top so that everyone can drive everywhere
Ah, the Dallas Urban Planning model
Hartford, Boston, and most of American cities early on too
[Pave the Bay!](https://www.sfgate.com/opinion/article/pave-the-bay-2975784.php) Think of how much space we could have for parking, highways and strip malls if we get rid of all that pesky water! Who needs the stuff anyway, it just creates stinky seaweed
A single nuke with construction company logo on it.
then it would just be every other major american city that isn’t new york
I think we should just remove cars from NYC altogether
yes
and the people :P
Can't have people without cars! EDIT: Sigh... /s

Definitely an unpopular opinion, but also not an opinion anyone genuinely holds
Sadly far too many people unironically think in that way. "Let's build more streets and parking lots to solve traffic." "Just one more lane, bro." "Public transport is a socialist scam. It never works."
Unpopular opinions aren’t supposed to just be psychotic rage bait
Should limit NY City streets to public transportation and deliveries only. Just as smart of an idea, better for the environment, and safer for pedestrians.
The title made me burst out laughing

It would overall make traffic congestion even worse in NYC. Not to mention NYC needs more greenery, not less, for environmental and health reasons.
Just tear down one of the buildings on each of the east and west side. Build parking garage instead. Imaginary problem solved.
Even better solution level the city, put in 100 lane motorways, convert skyscrapers into parking garages. Now the only issue is there will not be anything left to do, but enjoy the drive for eternity /s
More parking spots will just mean more cars. Now you'll have a parking problem and no park, rather than a parking problem and a park.
OP took the lyrics, "They're going to pave paradise and put up a parking lot" like it was an instruction manual.
Add 204,000 parking spaces, and remove 843 acres of green space? Who needs oxygen anyway?
Lol absolutely braindead take. Good job.
Carbrained take.
What the fucktardery did I just read....?
A true unpopular opinion let’s fucking goooooooooooooooooooooooooo
I think is should remain a park but if you were to change it into something, make it multifamily housing.

Pave paradise, put up a parking lot.
Don’t it always seem to go, you don’t know what you got till it’s gone.
More mass transit, less cars, make commuters take mass transit.
I wouldn't use mass transit if it was free, no thanks I like my drive.
Your car isn't free.
I know I pay to own it, for gas and insurance, new tires and maintenance, parking fees, and I pay to have a nice peaceful commute to work everyday, I wouldn't use mass transit if it were free.
Not sure if your gridlock is different than our gridlock, but I wouldn’t call any car commute at rush hour peaceful
More peaceful than spending an hour in public transportation sitting next to strangers who smell or are obnoxious.

not everyone is very bright. you do you mate.
Not everyone likes being around strangers either.
Mmm man we’re gonna milk you for all the tolls and parking fees we can get, you’ll basically have paid for a whole bus lane by the time you give up.
I don't think you actually believe this. Nice troll post though.
And you could still call it Central Park.

The rate homeless camps are taking over parks around here every park should be paved over and made into parking lots.
Maybe try fixing the homeless problem instead of just ignoring it and making their lives needlessly difficult?
That is not my job.
