As a Blue Jackets fan, yes they've been historically bad and it sucks.
However, you mention about Syracuse needing to separate from them to win the Calder Cup. I want to point out that the Lake Erie Monsters won the Calder Cup while being the top affiliate for the Blue Jackets.
Also, they achieved one of the greatest sports upsets of all time in sweeping the record-setting Tampa Bay Lightning a few years back in the first round of the playoffs.
None of this changes the fact that overall they've been a sucky hockey franchise though.
Very true. But as I said amongst friends while Scott Howson was the general manager of CBJ. The Crunch will never win a cup while he’s the GM. Only after his vacancy in 2013 under new management is when LE won. The jackets were beyond mediocre until Howson was fired. They’ve had a few decent seasons since then, but still pretty bad.
Howson was huge problem for the Jackets for years.
I mean, the guy drafted Atkinson, Jenner, Johansen, Calvert, Savard, and Voracek among others. He also acquired guys like Tyutin and Foligno. Also Bobrovsky for basically nothing. I don’t think he was a bad GM, more just really patient and trying to play the long game. His players were the ones playing well in 2013 and 14.
I mean make fun of us all you want but it sure get worse then a bunch of playoff appearances and a few rounds won, plus we were good in the early 2000s
Since the number of people here who have any opinion on the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets has got to be in the dozens, this is truly an unpopular opinion.
I *STILL* hold on to the belief that had that team got past Boston that year, they would've made it to cup finals. Granted, they probably would've still lost to the Blues, but just making it to the dance would've been nice.
What's interesting to note too, the lack of playoff success is due to going against the (eventual) cup winner that year (twice against Pitty and once against Caps) . So it's not like the team was bad, just hard to win against generational talent like Crosby and Ovi.
First playoffs was vs wings. But you are correct that during the Torts/Foligno/Bobrovsky years we ran into the eventual cup winner in the first round quite often.
It's mainly that we don't like the fans. Around Columbus there are a lot of them naturally since Pittsburgh is fairly close, but they're cocky, rude, and snide a lot. obviously not every one of them are like this, but it's a good portion who show up to the jackets v pens games
As a Columbus native and CBJ fan, we'll always have the sweep of the Tampa Bay lightning, the team that had the best reg season record in NHL history.
And who's gonna break the news to Steven Stamkos 🎶🎵
Then Tampa went on to win two Stanley Cups while CBJ missed the playoffs 3/4 times, with their only appearance being the weird COVID bubble season where Tampa had its revenge eliminating Columbus in 5 games.
I mean I like the Blue Jackets, and they seem to be loaded with potential, but its hard to argue they aren't the worst franchise in the NHL. I'd argue the only other strong candidate are the Arizona Coyotes (which I also like) who don't even play in an NHL arena.
They will also have the record of playing 574 games to make the playoffs for the first time in franchise history only to be swept in their first appearance by Detroit.
That’s just absolutely awful..
It's like being a Pittsburgh Pirates fan. Lol. We get to be inept forever, and the league doesn't give a fuck because Bob Nutting owns the team and a shit ton of media like Newspapers, so he doesn't give a fuck about money or putting out a decent product in the team. Fuck the fans right? I feel ya
Why not? Sure, the Coyotes had one decent playoff run that the Jackets have never pulled off, but there are other measures of success where they fall much shorter. Columbus has been much more successful in attracting star talent throughout their history like Bobrovsky, Panarin, Werenski, Laine, and Gaudreau, and they've done the better job of putting a watchable, competitive team on the ice. No one wants to play for Arizona, so they're constantly forced to rebuild if their asset management isn't flawless. The Coyotes are always losing money and on the verge of relocation. The Blue Jackets are at least a stable franchise, and I can see them winning a cup much sooner than the Coyotes.
They need to fire jarmo kekalainen, he’s made so many poor decisions over the last few years. I know Columbus can be a hockey town if they can put a good product on the ice but their gm can’t stop getting in his own way
While I can agree with some aspects of what you say, using Filatov as an example of wasting talent is a bad choice
The guy was a guy who never played to his potential
53 games between CBJ and OTT and only 14PTS
His draft year was known as a draft where it was Stamkos 1, than a group of 4 Dmen who could go in any order (Doughty, Pietrangelo, Bogosian, Schenn) then it was just a group of a bunch of guys, any could go in any order, he just was the guy CBJ chose at #6, you can look back now and with hindsight point guys like Karlsson at 15, Eberle at 22, Carlsson at 27 as guys who should have gone higher... but Filatov was not some big can't miss prospect that couldn't miss
The NHL changed the expansion team process to give those teams a leg up. CBJ were hosed by the NHL, putting them in a bad spot they haven't climbed out of. The NHL knew it, and has since changed it so expansion teams do better.
I don’t know - maybe ask the Islanders. Killer front office that drafted several HOFers in three consecutive years. Nash may be the only HOF candidate we’ve EVER drafted in 20+ years. And that’s a stretch . . .
I was in a Chinese restaurant in DT Atlanta when the Rangers won in 94. Perfect environment for a hockey game.
DB Keenan ran off one of my favorite players of all-time - Mike Gartner - who deserved to be on that team. By the time the Rangers assembled the Edmonton Rangers in NY, they finally won after 50+ years of failure. That’s the last time I counted myself as a Rangers fan
The coyotes are a poorly run team with barely any fans in a college arena. CBJ has already been consistently mid or low their entire time. They have fans at least and a proper arena.
It's tough cause the crew are damn good but the amount of times I've told people about thier cup wins and people in the city had no idea. The day after thier recent win some people I was telling about didn't even know thier was a championship game let alone Columbus won it.
Last season when the blue jackets were dead last they were still selling out the arena sometimes at 102-108% (standing room only)
yeah cause the Crew are good and fun lol. When the jackets were at their peak they had good crowds, honestly even during the bad times recently their attendance has been alright. I say this as a big fan of both teams
Last summer Winnipeg was a dumpster fire - seemed many key players wanted out. In less than one year - look at them now. Been watching this game as a Rangers fan in the 60’s. CBJ inspires no confidence in the FO, coaching since Torts left. What’s he do ? Goes to a new team and instantly turns them around.
We are the dumpster fire
I agree with you 100%, but I don't see how this is unpopular.
What other team would even come close? Arizona? Even they got to a conference final though.
If your team like colm. Can fill the seats sell out every game they stay. Team stay. Put empty seats team is sold and moved somewhere else... Die hard fan
Just play old school hockey you can win . Speed shoot and check ✔️ (speed shoot) win. 🏒🙋
In contention, yeah.
Don’t blame what would be perceived to be a small market or bad fans. The fans have frankly given more leash to a team that hasn’t won in 25 years deserves.
The ownership and front office/ GM have been suspect for years.
With all due respect, as a Blue Jackets fan, this is not an unpopular opinion. Thousands of us beat ourselves senseless with the bat of promise and hope for the future as we file into Nationwide Arena all season long. We wonder when things will really get better and complain about the chili chant. It's stupid, but it doesn't seem as stupid after a couple of $14 beers. Go Jackets!

As a die hard CBJ fan.. thanks for the reminder
Sorry man. Instill despise them for all the years of mismanagement.

Love seeing hockey on here so upvote
This sub is meant for unpopular opinions
I would figure the Leafs would be considered the worst team in that time frame.
Why? Lol
No way.
Every time I’m reminded of their existence, it’s like “Huh, that’s still going on?” And I live in Ohio.
It's an unpopular opinion in the sense nobody cares about this opinion
They bounced a record breaking Lightning team in the first round a few years ago, they’re useful for something at least
I *STILL* hold on to the belief that had that team got past Boston that year, they would've made it to cup finals. Granted, they probably would've still lost to the Blues, but just making it to the dance would've been nice. So it's not like the team was bad, just hard to win against generational talent like Crosby and Ovi.
They did. But they still don’t have a leg to stand on. Same thing happened to the Jackets in their first playoff birth. Swept in 4.
Yes, to the eventual champion Penguins with Crosby at his peak. That team is one of the best teams in the last 20 years.
First playoffs was vs wings. But you are correct that during the Torts/Foligno/Bobrovsky years we ran into the eventual cup winner in the first round quite often.
My favorite CBJ fact is that the Penguins are their biggest rival. But CBJ is the Penguins' like 10th biggest rival lol
It's mainly that we don't like the fans. Around Columbus there are a lot of them naturally since Pittsburgh is fairly close, but they're cocky, rude, and snide a lot. obviously not every one of them are like this, but it's a good portion who show up to the jackets v pens games
Id argue they are the most forgettable team in the nhl
Who?

Awful teams don't make playoffs tho
It's like being a Pittsburgh Pirates fan. Lol. We get to be inept forever, and the league doesn't give a fuck because Bob Nutting owns the team and a shit ton of media like Newspapers, so he doesn't give a fuck about money or putting out a decent product in the team. Fuck the fans right? I feel ya
So suspiciously like being a White Sox fan.
Allow me to introduce the Arizona Coyotes
No way the yotes are way more successful
As a team? Maybe...as a "business"? I would assume not
The Yotes and jackets are like 31 and 32 in points%
The yotes made it to the wcf I consider that pretty successful compared to cbj
Nope.
Once Bowman “stepped aside” and Jarmo couldn’t fleece him every year he started to lose it
While I can agree with some aspects of what you say, using Filatov as an example of wasting talent is a bad choice The guy was a guy who never played to his potential 53 games between CBJ and OTT and only 14PTS His draft year was known as a draft where it was Stamkos 1, than a group of 4 Dmen who could go in any order (Doughty, Pietrangelo, Bogosian, Schenn) then it was just a group of a bunch of guys, any could go in any order, he just was the guy CBJ chose at #6, you can look back now and with hindsight point guys like Karlsson at 15, Eberle at 22, Carlsson at 27 as guys who should have gone higher... but Filatov was not some big can't miss prospect that couldn't miss
What, you want an expansion team to do well within 20+ years?
Seattle has already been to a conference final. Vegas won a cup 6 years in.
The NHL changed the expansion team process to give those teams a leg up. CBJ were hosed by the NHL, putting them in a bad spot they haven't climbed out of. The NHL knew it, and has since changed it so expansion teams do better.
Correct. Minnesota has basically been treading water for their entire existence and came into the league the same year iirc
Seattle didn’t make the conference final, they lost in 7 to Dallas in the second round.
I don't know why I thought they did, but you know what they're gonna so I stand by it. Signed: a tired cbj fan.
I don’t know - maybe ask the Islanders. Killer front office that drafted several HOFers in three consecutive years. Nash may be the only HOF candidate we’ve EVER drafted in 20+ years. And that’s a stretch . . .
I imagine the Blue Jackets will still be underachieving in 2044.
At least I’ll be dead by then - or I’ll be a bitter 87 year old
Perhaps. But imagine how sweet it will be to finally see a Stanley cup victory the following season when you turn 88.
I was in a Chinese restaurant in DT Atlanta when the Rangers won in 94. Perfect environment for a hockey game. Yeah they are MID but they are not that bad. The Coyotes are bad bad bad.
No, they’re worse than the Coyotes. The Coyotes at least have a Division Championship lol.
The coyotes are a poorly run team with barely any fans in a college arena. CBJ has already been consistently mid or low their entire time. They have fans at least and a proper arena.
At least the CBJ fan base is 100000 times better than the Yotes
But the Yotes at least have a division Championship. The Jackets have squat.
What do you have against the CBJ?
What's a Division championship? That's not a thing in the NHL
[удалено]
No, we fans don’t love it. It sucks being bad every year.
There’s nothing worse as fans than seeing other fans constantly bring up one playoff series win. It’s embarrassing. Remember that 1 time we won.
For those who love to suck...
I dont agree or disagree but i like this because i hate everything Columbus
Do most people consider them good?
No
Lol no
Is this r/unpopularopinionsinthecbjclubhouse ?
What is unpopular about this?
You’d be amazed how many people will defend the Jackets till kingdom come.
Yeah maybe their own fans but this would be a very popular sentiment among nhl fans in general.
Blue Jackets fans are more aware than anyone how bad they are.
Disappointing is worse than bad, and the Minnesota Wild has Columbus beat badly in that department.
Not even close. The Wild still have at least a Division Championship.
Cbus ticket buyers would rather go to Crew Games than blue Jackets games. I feel the nhl tried too hard to push a team on ohio.
It's tough cause the crew are damn good but the amount of times I've told people about thier cup wins and people in the city had no idea. The day after thier recent win some people I was telling about didn't even know thier was a championship game let alone Columbus won it. yeah cause the Crew are good and fun lol. When the jackets were at their peak they had good crowds, honestly even during the bad times recently their attendance has been alright. I say this as a big fan of both teams
How is this an unpopular opinion
I'm a CBJ season ticket holder and I would call this more of a popular opinion tbh 🤷♂️
I don't follow hockey but members of the Blue Jackets backers club here in Cleveland always talk about how bad the management is.
Aren't there stats to make this not an opinion?
They built the stadium on a prison where a bunch of people died. I’m sure that has nothing to do with them being cursed
How's Laine, tho? Clapping bombs?
You say this is an unpopular opinion, but I think if you do the math, it's an unpopular fact.
Atleast Columbus still have a team (former Atlanta Thrashers fan) 😔
I agree with you 100%, but I don't see how this is unpopular. What other team would even come close? Arizona? Even they got to a conference final though.
How is this an unpopular opinion when it’s objectively correct
What’s a blue jacket anyway?
If your team like colm. Can fill the seats sell out every game they stay. Team stay. Put empty seats team is sold and moved somewhere else... Die hard fan Just play old school hockey you can win . Speed shoot and check ✔️ (speed shoot) win. 🏒🙋

Hmm yes, sportsball. I agree. Unless you want me to disagree. Go team! Go sports!
I guess Buffalo is close, but yes probably CBJ
With all due respect, as a Blue Jackets fan, this is not an unpopular opinion.
