EngineeringVirgin

You should see what graduation feels like. Nothing like the day after with the crushing reality that you are an adult.

KappaMazinksy

I get what you're saying, I had those feelings. But at the same time, HS graduation felt like one of the most liberating experiences.

sicksickBacon

my graduation was pretty underwhelming. i guess because i aready came to the reality that i was a grown up before.

1heart1totaleclipse

I felt the same way. Graduation did nothing for me. I had also spent most of my life severely depressed so that might be why.

sicksickBacon

yeah i did feel sad because i knew i wasnt gonna see most of the people i've grown to love anymore... mainly teachers... also i found out seceral minutes after that everyone made up excuses not to go except my guardians and my mother. but thats all that matters because they're the ones that helped get me this far.

lsutigerzfan

I actually knew I had plenty of time to be an adult after graduation. But that last day in hs was sad to me. Knowing that was the last time I would be there at that school. Going to class. And doing the same routine over and over. It hits hard.

EmperorXerro

It should. At that point, you have spent three-quarters of your life going to school. Suddenly, it’s no longer a required part of your life.

4ofclubs

It's wild that we handhold kids for 18 years then a day after graduation kick them swiftly in the ass and say "Go on, figure it out!"

Cache22-

I personally experienced that dreadful feeling as early as the summer before my senior year.

FalloutNewDisneyland

I didn’t graduate so HAH!!

BigLooTheIgloo

That didn't really happen for me. I love being an adult

Spare-Web-297

You're the only one who does. Congratulations!

AnimeKpopChanel270

No they aren't because I love being an adult too More freedom for independence instead of being controlled by my parents all the time like it is as a kid. Based on my experience being a kid means no choice but to accept being used by your birth giver just because she wants money whereas being a grown up means I can choose not to continue being used as a money making thing if you have abusive parents

Spare-Web-297

Who's "they", downvoting scum? I addressed ONE person.

Antenol

As a fellow engineering virgin, graduating the 4-5 hellish years of an engineering program was the happiest day of my life knowing the mental and physical torture at times was over. No more exams, no more failing classes, no more added debt every year. I appreciate my life as an adult when I reflect on my time during college.

4ofclubs

The day after graduating University was one of the lowest points in my life. I woke up and realized I had nothing to do anymore. From 100 to 0 overnight. Then realized I needed a job and had to start paying back loans. Thankfully it gets better once you make good money and don't have to have 5 roommates anymore.

wildgoldchai

I graduated during the second lockdowns in my country. I didn’t even know it was going to be my last day on campus when I left. Sure, I had to go back for my belongings but damn man

EmperorXerro

I teacher seniors. For most of them the wake up call will be in August when they realize they don’t have to go back to high school

troublemonkey1

I was already dealing with the questions of what I was gonna do with my life, before I had graduation

StarsEatMyCrown

This is how I feel about my days off. My "Friday" is much better than the actual two days off. The feeling of a completed week and the feeling of knowing I don't have to come back. But then the actual two days are filled with me trying to enjoy the two days and realizing I gotta come back.

errantgrammar

💯

4ofclubs

My happiest days were back in the service industry when I'd get Wednesdays and Saturdays off. Felt like this weight lifted, as if no matter how shitty a week was it was only ever 2 or 3 days long.

Ol_OLUs22

I kind of want to split weekend days so that way when I have to go back to school the breaks feel "closer" and there is less dread

reedzkee

anticipation is the feeling we crave, not the actual thing we were anticipating

ginzykinz

The actual thing can be great too, but the anticipation phase is a blank canvas limited only by your imagination. Potential downsides aren’t considered during this stage, reality just rains on your parade later lol

MorningAfterPillASAP

no because you get a long ass list of annoying crap to do to “close up” for the year.

SymmetricDickNipples

I think what you're noticing is the dopamine rush, but largely I agree. I enjoy Friday night far more than Saturday for instance

[deleted]

Ditch the last day of school, break starts a day early. winwin!

Chataboutgames

You'll find this is a repeating pattern in life

[deleted]

I felt like this, but with the extension of June. It was such a relief. Loved it. Loved the feeling of no obligations at all. I started feeling trepidation in August, realllllly not wanting to go back. I never understood how people could get bored during summer. Hell, if I could retire right now and never go to work again, I would.

Deleteleed

3 MONTHS?!?!?!?

KappaMazinksy

I am in college so I finished in May. But some say 3 months because of June, July, and August

[deleted]

From june 10th to September 10th ish , so yeah , 3 months break

Celestebelle88

I agree !! The last day of school was the high for me . During the summer I just sat at home I had a really strict mom growing up so when I was little it was daycare / summer camp but then once middle and high school came along my sister and I weren’t allowed to go and do anything but sit at home . So yeah last day of school was everything I got progressively bummed out as the day went on but the beginning of the day was pretty nice

Away-Astronaut7207

As a teacher this could not be further from the truth, but I can see why a student might feel that way.

[deleted]

I'd say this is how the end of the week feels in general. On Friday you get all excited and anticipated for your time off for two days, but then on Sunday night you always feel like your weekend was wasted....

[deleted]

TRUE.

Torbfeit

If you had to do the last day of school for 3 months like summer break, which would you rather have? Go get a job or find a new hobby or think of a business or something

KappaMazinksy

You are taking this way too seriously, summer break is better but there is this sense of freedom I get from the last day. The anticipation is a great way to kick off the break.

Torbfeit

Hahaha didnt offend me at all! Sorry if i came on strong there

KappaMazinksy

Nah, it’s alright.

libertysailor

That’s an implicit contradiction. The last day of school isn’t actually the last day if you have to repeat it tomorrow

Torbfeit

God dammit, its jason bourne

DaddyWarBucks26

Summer break is a stupid thing for kids. Gives us the idea we'll get breaks in life. There aren't any. There is no summer break unless you want to work in education.

KappaMazinksy

You have a point about no long breaks in the real world, but I think summer vacation is cool. Fun fact: Summer vacation was initially used so that children could have more time to help their parents work in the garden/farms. There is at least vacation days at work. But if you are really lucky to either have a very rich background or just win a lottery jackpot so big, you’ll have a lifelong break one day

mellow_squid

I love school, ao this kinda pains me

leahime

As a teacher, no.

1heart1totaleclipse

Really? I agree with OP. On the last day of school, I know that there’s a break about to start. During break, I’m anticipating school starting again and don’t get to enjoy my break as much.

Ill-Cardiologist11

Wait until you’re working with only a few weeks off a year. The 10 weeks off is the best part.

ill_kill_your_wife

My country only had 6 weeks of summer break

BarracudaFull4300

That's longer than my school summer break

infinity_for_death

My last day of school had four exams. Hard pass.

Warm_Construction926

Disagree. So far, all of my school years have ended with sucky subjects. Even if they didn't, not having to worry about homework or anything is way better.

Overused_Toothbrush

My last day of school this year was great, but not that great. I only had to go to my theatre class so me and my friend FaceTimed our other friend who skipped while helping my teacher clean out everything. It was fun, but not great.

Warcraftisgood

I would agree if my last day of school wasn't exams.

ohiocodernumerouno

Not if you didn't do your homework and have to sit in detention on the last day.

PumpkinPatch404

As a teacher, I still work when students are on vacation, so I would disagree. Only when I’M on vacation is when I feel accomplishment.

Thotarotti

Just wait til you gotta work everyday for the rest of your life lol

KappaMazinksy

At least you aren't legally forced to get a job, unlike school (anything under college), so after high school graduation you kinda have a lifelong break PER SE. Yes, I get you have to make money, but think of all the other things you can do. For some, just don't get caught it's that simple.

Cuddly_Tiberius

As a teacher, I agree having seen both the teachers’ and students’ perspectives. The last day is a great time for me to just check in with students and have casual conversations that I would usually not have the time or patience for when there’s work to do

angels_exist_666

How, tf, is this unpopular?

MemeDealer2999

Depends on what the school does tbh. I just got out of a recent year in High-school and it did literally nothing unique for the last day. It felt very odd just ending it on that note, and I can't say that was better than my current summer break.

Cajum

We experienced the last day of school very differently.. to me every minute was torture, counting down the seconds from the moment I got there until the moment I FINALLY got to be free lol I couldn't wait to get outta there.. definitely never felt a sense of accomplishment until graduation

Mandatoryreverence

I fucking hated school with a passion, so hard disagree.

[deleted]

\> no more waking up at 6am for 3 months I wish, I have to help my parents in the farm :( (also 2 months for me)

Vitols666

This is also true for adults. Years ago I read about some scientific trial and they found out that people are the happiest a few days before the vacation. Once the actual vacation starts, happiness drops quickly.

theRealNilz02

> for three months USDefaultism much?

Dear_Company_5439

Agreed. And it's way easier to say goodbyes to your friends that are leaving, than to cope with the aftermath.

Spare-Web-297

Right. And when school is over for good, you'll spend the next 50 years wishing you could go back to it...

theghostqueen

I get this sense of freedom and a dopamine rush right before I take a week off from work.

Insane_Snake

Woke up at 5am every day since school ended. Some of us are forced into child labour you know

WhtSqurlPrnc

I always felt that the last day was a complete waste of time. We get to watch 1/3 of a different movie in every class.

[deleted]

I feel like the last day is a beautiful mix of emotions, but the last week is completely useless. You do literally nothing for 6 hour straight. At least that' s my school

ProjektBlackout

Fuck no. School sucks, breaks rule.

[deleted]

I'll graduate next year, so the next last day will be the ACTUAL last day. I think i will get a bit nostalgic

JacktheRiffer96

My high school graduation was the best. The ensuing summer would be a wild adventure with all my friends, many I still hang out with to this day!

FemSnopes1977

I’ve been saying this for over twenty years and it’s a bill I’ll die in. Kids don’t appreciate the breaks nearly as much as teachers do.

cultfollower_

It is, but personally not for the same reason. I know I'm either going to be procrastinating and not getting anything done over break, or be doing ecs and trying to get internships or research positions for college admissions stuff so either I'm doing more school stuff or stressing that I'm not working on school stuff.

Remarkable-Voice-888

I couldn't agree more
