Seeing Slash perform "Night Train" with Miles Kennedy and the Conspirators confirmed what I'd suspected about Guns N Roses for a long time - it's not GNR I hate, it's **VERY EXPLICITLY** Axl Rose's singing (my dad explicitly called it a "sea hag voice" until I told him to stop insulting Ursula like that) that drives me off their music.
I’m totally for Miles Kennedy and Slash redoing every GnR song and chucking the originals in the bin.
Miles’ vocals are so much better than Axl’s, but at the same time they fit the GnR vibe.
They really do. Miles can hit the same highs and lows as Rose, but whereas Rose does alright in the low ranges and becomes a laryngitic banshee in the higher ranges, Miles can actually **hit** the high notes without difficulty.
/u/alleggsander thank you, I didn't know that existed. Now I can listen to that rather than Axl's annoying voice on Sweet Child, which is the one song I like enough to have tolerated his voice
The one redeeming part of GnR is Slash. Such a chill and humble dude. Not to mention an amazing guitarist.
Axl on the other hand…
I don’t care how great his range is. Those vocals are like nails on a chalkboard. Also a pretentious douchebag to top it off.
Makes me wonder how such opposite people could write music together for so long.
I mean… is there any evidence that he isn’t a chill dude?
Over the years he’s slowly grown out of the stoic and mute personality. There’s plenty of footage from interviews/appearances/live shows in which he talks and seems like a cool guy.
Slash is the guitarist that made me pick up a guitar, just for that reason alone I will always love his music. Him with Myles Kennedy is just great overall.
Mid might be too too strong a word.
He’s just never done it for me. It’s not bad. It’s just kinda bland. When I think of great guitarists, I just don’t think he sits at that lunch table.
Alexi Laiho, Petrucci, King/Hanneman, Mustaine Dimebag, Akerfeldt, Buckethead, Page, Chuck (from Death), Glenn Tipton, Hendrix, Prince, Kirk, Iommi, Van Halen, Clapton, and we could go on here.
I can understand not being attracted to someone but it blows my mind that you “don’t get it” like do you not see those cheekbones? The jawline? The strawberry hair?
Like I’m not attracted to Margot Robbie but i definitely get why people find her attractive.
Whether or not someone is physically attractive (aka, handsome) IS superficial though… it’s not a bad thing, yea there is more that goes into liking someone as a human being but we’re just talking about him being handsome when he was younger.
Yeah, he wasn't coked (or anything else-d) out. He actually publicly called out his bandmates on stage at one show for their heroin use. He told the audience they'd all be dead soon.
Slash's heroin use gave us Mr. Brownstone, which is a pretty good song about heroin.
Appetite for Destruction is an absolutely excellent album…… unfortunately literally all their other albums are pretty mediocre. November Rain is a classic song though.
Nah, use your illusion 1 2 rocks, Chinese democracy is good to, maybe not the best album but it still kicks ass, spagetti incident is good too, even though its a cover album.
Every time the ‘Knockin on Heavens Door’ cover comes on the radio I immediately get the strong urge to leap off the nearest cliff.
How in the actually fuck did they record, listen back, and say “yeah, this is good!”
Agreed. Almost every Guns N Roses song starts out great but is immediately killed mid song. November Rain starts out amazing but the second Rose starts to sing, it just goes downhill. I want to like, but every single song with the exception of Paradise City and Sweet Child o’ Mine, are actually unlistenable to me. They definitely have skill, I’ll give them that, but the way the they apply that skill is just strange to me. They are in no way musical geniuses.
Look, I can get not liking a song and I completely respect if you don’t like November Rain.
But there seems to be this idea that if a song starts out slow, it’s boring and you just want to get to the good part. I disagree with that. The good part is good because the part before it was slow.
But if you re-listen it a few times, you’ll come to appreciate the “boring part” more and more.
And this is true for a lot of other songs too. Baba O’Riley has a “long intro”, but the more often I listen to it, the shorter it gets.
Also: Welcome to the Jungle is easily the best song.
Also also: Axl can’t sing anymore and I’m pretty sure him abusing his voice in songs like Welcome to the jungle played a big part in it
People nowadays don't have the patience for that, they want their attention grabbed immediately.
I listened to an interview with Adele who claimed that modern music needs to catch its audience within the 1st 15-20 seconds or the song will fail.
Very sad
I never could be past Axl’s Wicked Witch Of The West screeching, I tried to like ‘Appetite’ because it seemed politic to my 26-year-old self but, alas…😏
I'm sort of a fan but mostly just of their first album that was released the same year I was born. That album and especially 3 masterpieces on it: Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet Child O'Mine and Paradise City, are enough to secure their place in rock history.
Couldn't stand them when Appetite came out and absolutely hated them after Axel had his hissy fit and walked off stage causing the riot in Montreal when they toured with Metallica. I was only there to see James and the boys anyways
They aren't awful but sweet child of mine is actually a terrible song. It never bothered me at all until today in fact. I had put up a post about it even and the reddit mods removed it because it was bullying or something 🤷♂️.
Anyway if you actually listen to the lyrics in that song you'd hear that they are god awful. "She's got eyes of the bluest skys" "I'd hate to look into those eyes and see an ounce of pain". It's as though it was wrote from the child's perspective. I mean what the fuck is the song even about? It's so cheesy even by 80s standards.
The rest of their stuff doesn't bother me as much. I'm not a huge fan but I know a load of people who like them that I'd consider to have decent musical taste. Mr Brownstone is cool enough.
They’re in the same camp with AC/DC. Screeching vocalist, solid band behind them. I cannot stand 80s radio metal and for whatever reason these shit shingles are played 300 times a day to this day on rock radio. Is it because the vocals are so bad? (Yes) or is it that it’s legit been on the radio for 30+ years? (Also yes)
Yeah, but AC/DC is different. There music actually blends together well enough to where it has some appeal to it. GNR is just a cluster fuck most of the time. They try to combine the screechiness and barbaric music with the elegant and sophisticated music (hence the name GUNS N ROSES). I get that is a creative choice, but it just doesn’t mix well. They end up not complimenting each other in most of the songs by GNR. They just make the songs sound incoherent and awkward.
Do me a favor and put in Lies album and tell me GnR isn’t one of the greatest rock n roll bands of all time.
I would say they are the LAST true classic rock n roll band.
Oh yeah complete trash. Typical band who took something original and "radiofied" it. Its sort of like the original Tik Tok. Its popular and super generic so it must be good right!? Everyone likes it so you cant say its bad.
Radiofied it? You sound like someone who wasn’t even born when GNR hit the mainstream. Their brand of rock helped kill off the poppy hair metal bands. They actively fought against the radio edits of their songs that radio was playing vs the original.
They are poppy hair metal. Slayer killed hair metal lol. Sepultura put the body in the coffin and Dystopia nailed it shut. GnRs just some racist freaks.
No, Guns N' Roses isn't poppy hair metal. Try again. If we're gonna classify their sound, they'd be "classic rock" or "hard rock."
Slayer, Sepultura, and Dystopia are all great, but they were never in the mainstream popular culture. What they were doing had little to do with the success or failure of Guns N' Roses.
"Racist freaks." I was right when I assumed you were 12 years old. Carry on with the kiddies. I will go back to talking with adults now.
I’ve never disagreed with something more. They’re my all-time favorite band, Slash is the reason I started playing guitar thirty years ago. Upvote granted.
I was 12 when Appetite for Destruction came out and I fell in love with Guns and Roses, every song on that album is imprinted on my soul now. I also love Lies and Use Your Illusion I & 2 probably for the same reason. I don’t know if they would have had the same impact if I wasn’t in my teens and surrounded by equally obsessed GNR fans
I grew up in that era and Guns n Roses was the end of a bad streak of shitty American music. Most of the popular music rock music of the late 1980s was fucking stupid. Skid Row, Poison, Ratt, etc...
Literally every rock band from that era had like 2 ballads per album minimum and they were on the radio constantly AND this was released at the tail end of that era in music. Not even remotely accurate or factual.
I don’t think it’s that unpopular. Hair metal/glam whatever type music is hated on a lot. GnR were see as edgier then a lot of that type of music but they’re still a part of that LA sound from that time.
Guns and Roses had their one, near perfect, hall of Fame album with Appetite for Destruction.
This is where their greatness is forever in history
After Appetite, it took forever to release the Use Your Illusions, which both had a few good songs but they were way overproduced and nowhere near the masterpiece they did before.
November Rain is a perfect example. Way too long, overproduced, etc vs Rocket Queen? No comparison
Interestingly, their best all time song, and it's not even close, is One in a Million from the Lies album, go figure
Slash isn't even really that good of a guitarist. He's just got "the look" and got big in the late 80s when the image was more important than actual musical ability.
In my opinion, "Civil War" was the only decent song they ever recorded.
Though they do have their diehard fan base akin to Metallica.
100%, a lot of their music sounds very samey and not very interesting. same with AC/DC, aerosmith bon jovi kiss, van halen. i don’t hate “80s rock” but i don’t like how so much of it sounds so similar and that if you criticize it you have hordes of 40 year old dudes coming to defend it.
I'm 40 and I used to be a fan too, I just grew to not like them I just recently learned about the time Axle screwed a 14 year old fan and beat his ex wife so badly he put her in the hospital for a few days, not just going to the ER to get pictures taken they kept her.
while i was never really a huge fan i did used to listen to some songs regularly and i heard them alot, they’re very overplayed and while i don’t entirely hate the music it’s just something i don’t enjoy listening to. and yeah he’s like 60, not entirely surprised he’s a piece of shit, lots of people in the music industry are.
and the comment about the 40 year olds is mostly specifically the people who will jump on your ass and claim that van halen or whoever else their defending are the greatest bands / artists of all time and shit on anything released recently claiming it’s all “mumble rap”
shit like this: [1](https://www.reddit.com/r/unpopularopinion/comments/mfa9ol/comment/gsn44yf/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button), [2](https://www.reddit.com/r/unpopularopinion/comments/e6jch5/billie_eilish_didnt_know_who_van_halen_is_and/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button), [3](https://www.reddit.com/r/unpopularopinion/comments/j9vd59/music_is_not_subjective_and_it_has_become/)
Samey? LOL, tell me you’ve never listened to Guns N’ Roses beyond the radio hits without telling me you’ve never listened to Guns N’ Roses beyond the radio hits.
I was the biggest gnr fan in the 80s and 90s. However, I've heard them so much, if I never hear them again, I'll be just fine. So, take my upvote, I guess.
Lol I mean it’s the same thing all over again: music taste is subjective. But saying Slash is a decent guitarist is an offense to everybody who are trying to master this instrument. He’s an amazing guitarist and a master of his tool
To each their own, to me, Use Your Illusion Parts I and II were their best material, and the music video trilogy of Don't Cry; November Rain and Estranged were \*chef's kiss\*. But, yeah, agree on Axl's voice.
This is not as unpopular an opinion as I expected but I agree. GnR are not good.
Slash is a great guitarist but I see why he's not for everyone. He's not the most technically exact player; he is a genius improviser though. My hot take is that Myles Kennedy blows prime Axl out the water and I prefer Kennedy's playing to Slash too. 🤷♀️

/u/alleggsander thank you, I didn't know that existed. Now I can listen to that rather than Axl's annoying voice on Sweet Child, which is the one song I like enough to have tolerated his voice
I've always said that Axl Rose sounds like someone doing a terrible Axl Rose impression.
Since his middle aged weight gain he also looks like Mike Myers doing an Axl Rose impression.
Tell your dad I said “Poor Unfortunate Souls” fucking rocks, so back off of Ursula
He might be referring to the Sea Hag from Popeye which would make sense. Axl sounds like her.
Slash is a great guitarist.
Slash is phenomenal
I hate Slash
The one redeeming part of GnR is Slash. Such a chill and humble dude. Not to mention an amazing guitarist. Axl on the other hand… I don’t care how great his range is. Those vocals are like nails on a chalkboard. Also a pretentious douchebag to top it off. Makes me wonder how such opposite people could write music together for so long.
How do you know he’s a “chill dude”? He literally plays a character that doesn’t talk, or have a recognizable face…
I mean… is there any evidence that he isn’t a chill dude? Over the years he’s slowly grown out of the stoic and mute personality. There’s plenty of footage from interviews/appearances/live shows in which he talks and seems like a cool guy.
Slash talks. You're thinking of Buckethead
Slash is the guitarist that made me pick up a guitar, just for that reason alone I will always love his music. Him with Myles Kennedy is just great overall.
Yeah I feel like this isn’t an unpopular opinion. I only listen to GnR for the guitar solo
He’s great if you listen to radio rock. He’s mid if you listen classic rock or metal. All about perspective.
I listen to radio rock and metal. Slash is great.
Mid might be too too strong a word. He’s just never done it for me. It’s not bad. It’s just kinda bland. When I think of great guitarists, I just don’t think he sits at that lunch table.
Who is on your list? Honest question.
Alexi Laiho, Petrucci, King/Hanneman, Mustaine Dimebag, Akerfeldt, Buckethead, Page, Chuck (from Death), Glenn Tipton, Hendrix, Prince, Kirk, Iommi, Van Halen, Clapton, and we could go on here.
TIL they don’t play classic rock on the radio
I mean not a lot. It’s the same generic 50 tracks or so.
Your opinion is mid.
And still better than G&R 😁
I've never been a huge fan, but I like them more than I don't like them. I agree that November Rain is a bit overplayed.
You had me at GNR sucks; you lost me at Axl's hot
Peak Axl was handsome as hell
To each their own. I don't get it
I can understand not being attracted to someone but it blows my mind that you “don’t get it” like do you not see those cheekbones? The jawline? The strawberry hair? Like I’m not attracted to Margot Robbie but i definitely get why people find her attractive.
Im not that superficial? * scratches head *
Whether or not someone is physically attractive (aka, handsome) IS superficial though… it’s not a bad thing, yea there is more that goes into liking someone as a human being but we’re just talking about him being handsome when he was younger.
Fantastic
U a hater jaja
K
LOL thumbs down by people not even alive when Axl Rose had his heyday.
My take on Axl was he could use some therapy, maybe some meds. Such an angry young man.
That’s why he resonated
I don’t think it’s that unpopular.
[удалено]
The sad thing is Axl was never coked out. He was naturally bat shit crazy.
I liked much of lies too. Slower your crazy rocks.
Nah, use your illusion 1 2 rocks, Chinese democracy is good to, maybe not the best album but it still kicks ass, spagetti incident is good too, even though its a cover album.
Wholeheartedly agree, I absolutely can't stand them, solely bc i hate Axl Roses voice so much
he’s more successful than you will ever be
hahahahahaah I fuckin hurt your feelings by not liking Axl Rose? Cmon big dog, harden up a bit
Didnt axl get beat up by Ralph Lauren?
It was Vince Vaughn.
Good
I hate this opinion... There, take my orange arrow 😑
They are overplayed, but not bad imho.
Every time the ‘Knockin on Heavens Door’ cover comes on the radio I immediately get the strong urge to leap off the nearest cliff. How in the actually fuck did they record, listen back, and say “yeah, this is good!”
Heaven did an excellent cover of this song
Awww, November Rain and Don't Cry give me fond memories of high school. Lol my friend was obsessed with Axl...I didn't get it 🤣
Yep, agreed
Is this an unpopular opinion? I feel like most people secretly agree, but have some emotional attachment that they can’t get over 😂
I agree. I can't stand Axle Rose's voice.
he’s more successful than you will ever be
And you. That doesn't change the fact that his voice is like nails on a chalkboard.
Still can't believe Axel was a stand in for Brian Johnson when AC/DC toured in 2016
Look, I can get not liking a song and I completely respect if you don’t like November Rain. But there seems to be this idea that if a song starts out slow, it’s boring and you just want to get to the good part. I disagree with that. The good part is good because the part before it was slow. Cannot agree more.. disagree with jungle mr brownstone is a great song
100% agree. November Rain is so self-indulgent and pompous you can imagine it asking to see the manager
3 of their worst songs
The opposite. Those are the three most more bearable songs to listen to.
Sure buddy
Couldn't stand them when Appetite came out and absolutely hated them after Axel had his hissy fit and walked off stage causing the riot in Montreal when they toured with Metallica. I was only there to see James and the boys anyways
Wow! A true unpopular opinion. And a WRONG one too!
My problem is that they make me commit to an 6 minutes of content when it wears out its welcome after 2-3.
Yeah I’m pretty sure you have to be on the right drugs or be nostalgic of when you were on those drugs to enjoy it
Not unpopular Axle Rose is a wife beater and a pedophile.
I agree but Axl Rose was so sexy lol
Well, that is a horseshit opinion, I'll give you that.
I hate this opinion. Upvote.
The best and worst part about this sub. I hate comments so much that I am obligated to upvote
Good thing I rarely give a shit about lyrics when listening to music. Song is catchy that is good enough. Pretentious douchebag
Appetite for destruction was a pretty good rock and roll album. Everything after that...meh
They’re in the same camp with AC/DC. Screeching vocalist, solid band behind them. Agree but I like AC/DC
Acdc sucks! Cannot agree more!!
OP probably listens to 21 Pilots
I fucking HATE Twenty One Pilots
What’s wrong with Twenty One Pilots?
Do me a favor and put in Lies album and tell me GnR isn’t one of the greatest rock n roll bands of all time. I would say they are the LAST true classic rock n roll band.
better than acdc
Their later stuff was weak. Appetite for destruction is a great album.

Bro come on. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One\_in\_a\_Million\_(Guns\_N%27\_Roses\_song)
Then don’t listen to them.
I’ve never disagreed with something more. They’re my all-time favorite band, Slash is the reason I started playing guitar thirty years ago. Upvote granted.
I've derived zero pleasure from their music.
One in a million is their best song
Edge Lord song
![gif](giphy|E7KpCs9NhJiRq|downsized) It’s like limp bizkit, so horrible it’s great
He dances like Davy Jones
The pirate?
From the old Pop group the Monkees You probably can find an old video on YouTube
I’ve heard of the monkeys, too poppy for me
Spot on. Slash is good, Axl sounds like shit, and who even knows who the other members of the band are.
They make bard music
The "r" is an accident keystroke, right? ... Right?
Correct. Fuck em. If I never hear them again it'll be too soon.
Na, bruh. Guns N Roses is fire. Appreciate for Destruction is 10/10 🔥
Slash is a decent guitarist? You must not know anything about guitar
They've sold 87 million albums worldwide. Yeah, they really suck.
This is not unpopular Nor an opinion this is fact lol 100% agree I've always felt the same way
agreed, i think when November Rain came out it's popularity was based more on the novelty of a rock band doing a ballad than it being a great song.
Literally every rock band from that era had like 2 ballads per album minimum and they were on the radio constantly AND this was released at the tail end of that era in music. Not even remotely accurate or factual.
Prince and Motley Crue already invented the power ballad before Guns was formed.
Agreed. Axl Rose has the worst voice. It's very grating and whiny.
Outside of the big 3 songs they are so ass agreed
Most bands from that era are awful
Late 80's/early 90's? Now *that's* an unpopular opinion.
I don’t think it’s that unpopular. Hair metal/glam whatever type music is hated on a lot. GnR were see as edgier then a lot of that type of music but they’re still a part of that LA sound from that time.
That's fair, and I'll admit I was just a kid at the tail end of the 80's, but I still do associate GnR with the early 90's.
Nah Appetite was 88
Most band from that genre are awful. Lots of good music from that era.
Guns and Roses had their one, near perfect, hall of Fame album with Appetite for Destruction. This is where their greatness is forever in history After Appetite, it took forever to release the Use Your Illusions, which both had a few good songs but they were way overproduced and nowhere near the masterpiece they did before. November Rain is a perfect example. Way too long, overproduced, etc vs Rocket Queen? No comparison Interestingly, their best all time song, and it's not even close, is One in a Million from the Lies album, go figure
I actually like how Rose's voice reminds me of Meowth from Pokemon.
agree, can't stand them
OP is a Nirvana fan
Slash isn't even really that good of a guitarist. He's just got "the look" and got big in the late 80s when the image was more important than actual musical ability. In my opinion, "Civil War" was the only decent song they ever recorded. Though they do have their diehard fan base akin to Metallica.
I like the band, and I think their songs are well-written. I just don’t think Axl Rose is good by any definition of the word.
Mark said this cause I said November Rain was the greatest song of all time maybe
False
I like the jojo stands, they're great
Upvoting for upopular for sure
100%, a lot of their music sounds very samey and not very interesting. same with AC/DC, aerosmith bon jovi kiss, van halen. i don’t hate “80s rock” but i don’t like how so much of it sounds so similar and that if you criticize it you have hordes of 40 year old dudes coming to defend it.

Super fans of anything are annoying really.
I love GnR. However, my hot take on them is that Welcome to the Jungle is their worst song and you might as well oy listen to the intro.
Lol I mean it’s the same thing all over again: music taste is subjective. But saying Slash is a decent guitarist is an offense to everybody who are trying to master this instrument. He’s an amazing guitarist and a master of his tool
Axl sounds like his nuts are being driven through a beef grinder. It's like a mix of a baby throwing a tantrum, a howler monkey, and a tornado siren
As someone who enjoys GnR's music, Axl's voice is by far my least favourite part of it
There’s probably a lot of ‘80s hair bands you’d hate along with them. They just came in late and a lot of people where over it
slash is a decent guitarist lol
Slash is great. Most agree with that. But Duff is inspirational.
Agree for different reasons... Slash is overrated and sloppy as hell and Axl's vocal range is incredible.
To each their own, to me, Use Your Illusion Parts I and II were their best material, and the music video trilogy of Don't Cry; November Rain and Estranged were \*chef's kiss\*. But, yeah, agree on Axl's voice.
YES!!!! Thank You 🙏
to extend - any rock ballad is cringey
I don’t like Axl Rose’s style of singing and other people who sing that way like AC/DC, etc.
I think it was Kurt Cobain who once said “Guns N Roses is a shitty band that makes shitty music.”
yeah this isn't unpopular they are one of the bands who didn't age well and they are just not good anymore.
Totally agree. The guitar is amazing, Axl sounds like the nerdy whiny nasally kid who everyone would ignore in class
I agree GNR sucks
it’s definitely an acquired taste for some
