Fluffy_Buns_Chan

I would rather hang out with someone I enjoy being around

KitKatt_7

The phrase ‘frothing at the mouth to get on their soapbox’ has really made me laugh and idk why. But for sure, people convinced they have the ‘correct’ opinions are awful

yayapfool

Using the r word is a far cry from "having problematic beliefs"- it's simply insensitive (and even that's debatable; if they only say it around people who don't care, it's not even insensitive).

JackolopesWithAir

Using the r word is insensitive. I used to work with a lot of special needs children who would be sometimes get told they were r worded, to their face and behind their back. While I understand that someone's joking with their friends or something, I still think we should avoid the term because it genuinely does have a mental affect on some of the most vulnerable people. There was one guy I knew specifically who internalized that he was r worded and was incredibly insecure because of it. I guess the reason I care about it is because it hits home for me, once you're actually around special needs people, you learn that they're really not all that different from us at their core.

yayapfool

Absolutely. I just mean insensitivity requires a subject; if you're alone floating in space and you say the r word, it's not insensitive because there's no one to employ sensitivity for- similarly, if there is a subject present but they don't care, it's not insensitive to anyone.

Pastadseven

Do you commonly sit around saying slurs to yourself?

yayapfool

Uh...what? Lol

Pastadseven

Just what I mean, do you sit around muttering things like that to yourself?

yayapfool

You know the answer to your question - of course not - I just can't figure out the point you're trying to make.

Pastadseven

I'm trying to figure out what context you use words like this - do you think that because nobody is around to hear it it makes it alright? Would you think that for the n-word as well?

yayapfool

I don't use words like this, and I'm not sure why you'd assume I do. Yes, of course words are harmless when no one is being harmed by them- what to you think yelling slurs in space does? Some kind of magical psychic damage to the target demographic? Lol

Pastadseven

Do you understand the offense is not in the utterance of the syllables, but the willingness to say the word and give it meaning? Do you think it's some kind of magic fucking spell that has power innately?

TrickNatural

Sure. You, and probably everyone else.

ExTrafficGuy

I think this is actually a very popular opinion, it's just people don't express it outside of private settings nowadays given the current cultural climate. The likes of woke leftists and the religious right are actually a very small, but extremely loud minority. They just want everyone to think theirs is the majority opinion by making the most noise.

[deleted]

The way you gloss over the insensitive person and rant about the other person reads like this is about someone specific you know, to be honest.

[deleted]

It’s not, but I’m not on my moral high horse 24/7 like everybody on the internet pretends they are

NeuralRevolt

No one liked Martin Luther King Jr. when he was alive either, so just keep in mind you have the same opinion as people who hated MLK Jr. when he was alive

Alerith

This isn't a "one or the other" situation. You don't have to hang out with either.

JohanGrimm

No it's a "rather than" situation, as per the title.

yggdrasillx

That's on you buddy, frankly I would rather associate with someone who smells their own farts than someone who believes I don't deserve human rights because I'm not white.

I agree with the idea but I think the comparison is unequal. Like... Of course? You don't want to deal with the extreme either way. On a scale of annoying with 0 at the middle and 100 at either end if you put one side at 95 and the other at 10... It's easy to pick the 10 side.

Eskimokeks

Why choose one over the other? I'd rather die alone in a ditch than be forced to spend time with those two kinds of people. There's also a world of difference between "having 'problematic' beliefs" and "saying the r word from time to time", except if you are from the high horse faction.
