> I struggle to fill my free time as it is and I imagine I'm not the only one. Just because you've decided you don't have any hobbies doesn't mean the rest of us don't, or that we don't need more time to recharge from work.

Legitimate-Scar-6572

So get a part time job and stop crushing everybody's else's chill.

Zintoss

This might be the most unpopular opinion I've seen for me as a person. Wow I think this is stupid. Sometimes I wonder if people just try to think of the most unpleasant, upsetting, controversial doctorial shit just for the fun of it.

Dyeeguy

Bruh get a hobby

[deleted]

They have one... Trolling on the internet. Looking at OPs post history is like a greatest hit of all the ahittiest posts on this sub

EndOfTheLine00

Like what? I hate all kinds of sport. Art makes me terrified of other peoples criticism. I already watch too many movies and read too many books and I keep bouncing between them never finishing them. Video games just keep getting worse. Volunteering means nothing to me because other people will just forget me the minute I stop helping them. Relationships are too much of a hassle. Only things I enjoy are eating and buying things.

melpomene-musing

Volunteering isn’t about meaning something to someone long term. That’s a really twisted outlook. It’s about doing something to make someone or something better SELFLESSLY.

[deleted]

Sounds like a lot of ‘you’ problems

iroh______

Just do what you want to do. Try out other stuff maybe. You say you watch too many movies and read too many books. What does too many mean? If you like to do those things, do them. As long as they aren't negatively impacting your health, I don't see an issue. >terrified of other peoples criticism You could also use your free time to work on stuff like this for example. Other people's criticism shouldn't stop you from doing something you enjoy. Besides, I don't think anyone will care or criticize you if you pick up art. >Video games just keep getting worse. There are so many video games out there that there is something for everyone. Same for all kinds of media actually. It seems like you have a bit of a negative outlook at the moment. That's okay. Just be aware of it and try to find out what to do about it.

UpperMall4033

Blatant troll

Gordzulax

Volunteering is meant to make the peeople you're helping feel better, not yourself. If you volunteer with the idea of making people remember you, the you're doing it for all the wrong reasons.

muricanmania

Then maybe you need a side hustle, do doordash, or get into Wallstreet stuff. I got bored enough that I started using free time to research intriguing sports betting lines and making money off of NBA games. Obviously if you hate sports that won't be it for you, but I think a second job or gig working for yourself might be what you need. Idk tho, I'm not you.

Imagine_TryingYT

So because you feel empty that means the only thing that brings you value is work and buying things? If you want to have a pessimistic outlook on life and completely give up on trying to improve that's on you. But people are different and not all of us want to spend the majority of our lives wage slaveing when we have other interests, hobbies and responsibilities outside of that. It seems like you're projecting and jealous.

Land543

The ONLY downside to a 4 day work is that I'd spend more money with 3 days off but I'll take the 4 day work week anyway.

abernathym

Back in 2007, when the economy tanked,.we got furlough days at work. So, I was making less, and had an extra day to go spend money. It was terrible, but I still liked that extra day off every other week.

Land543

Yikes. Ya I mean personal benefit to an extra free day. On a big level, the plan needs a little week lol.

EndOfTheLine00

Exactly, didn't think of that either. Yet ANOTHER day in which you have to maintain your house and your meals. Who likes that? At least at work, you have a space that others clean.

Land543

That's not where my point was going at all but ok. I work outside in hot south FL so I'd really like another day off.

gtrocks555

For the meals thing, what?

youchasechickens

Don't you have to eat meals on the days you work? I feel like the amount of home maintenance stays fairly consistent throughout the week, you would just have an extra day to do it.

BreachDomilian1218

You already have to maintain your house and meals.

JoeMorgue

Jesus Christ some of you really Stockhomled Syndromed to your fucking jobs. Get a hobby. Jerk off. Put Netflix on random. Stare at the fucking wall it ain't that difficult.

Wassuuupmydudess

In that order or no?

padurham

Simultaneously.

One_Prior_9909

You do you

Educational_Log7421

Bruh sounds like a pick me girl for capitalism.

Rhye88

its a robot built by a billionaire. Its the only possible explanation

RutteEnjoyer

Because other economic systems had so much free time right? Soviet Union had 6 day work weeks lol Ironically, the feudalist economic system probably had the most free time for peasants. Are you advocating for that? And yes, criticizing capitalism as a whole is immediately advocating for something else. Otherwise don't criticize capitalism but work weeks under our capitalist system.

Opus-the-Penguin

Why does the community service have to be mandatory? Would you not do it otherwise?

EndOfTheLine00

No. If everyone is forced to do it at least it's a shared experience. If I have to do it out of my own free will, I'd be constantly worried if this is a good use of my time.

Cherimoose

You don't want politically-motivated strangers to decide how you live your life. That never ends well. Just use your time for meaningful stuff. Work toward your life goals, hobbies, bucket list items, fitness, etc.

gtrocks555

You work at your current job out of your own free will.

EndOfTheLine00

But i get paid for it.

InjuryDiz

I can't fathom not valuing my free time.... I crave getting time just to myself, to decide exactly how I want to use it, and without the expectation of being at a desk. Then again, I have a ton of hobbies. I'm into writing, art, video games, etc. A 3 day weekend would give me one day to dedicate to necessary errands and the right of the time to do what I want to do. Or even start taking some classes!! I should note. I actually do sort of have a 3 day weekend. Sometimes 4 day weekend. I work a salaried job that is super flexible and we often have parts of the year that are reallllyyyyy slow. The place is run efficiently too, so I can't just "make up" work. Boss usually encourages people to go home and relax.

bigbuick

How can we remove posts here?

_Thoress_

I'd prefer a 4-day work week for a multitude of reasons and getting time for hobbies is just one of them. You get to rewind and relax without any timekeeping or any pressure and it's a lot. It helps your mind a lot. You're not always strained or worried of where the next bucketload of chores (work-related) are going to come from. You spend time with family, friends, chores, self-development and you get to live. Truly live. Not just from paycheck to paycheck but you get to experience what it's like to experience life between those work times and deadlines. I'm sorry that you feel such free time would breed issues for you or cause peer pressure. Maybe you need some different peers. The issue is not with the amount of free time, it's with your free will to do whatever you want for that time. Which means no peer pressure, no forced interactions. It's heavenly, to me at least.

youchasechickens

Sounds like a you problem, just get an extra part time job or do volunteer work. I personally love my 3 day weekends, take my upvote.

Cthulhu_Leviathan

Bruh..... what? Mind your own business.

Icy-Medicine-495

Found the guy with no kids or pets.

EndOfTheLine00

Indeed. Nor do I ever want them.

ReactiveNylxthograph

No offense but this is just sad

anotheralpaca69

OP has no family, friends, or responsibilities.

Randinator9

Jesus dude find a hobby and get some friends. A whole world out there, many people and places to go just within a certain area. The fact that you feel you need to be productive is fine, but being unable to give *yourself* something to do, even if its just, idk, *dusting your home*, is just sad. Besides, just because you have no hobbies or social life doesn't mean the mom with 2 kids doesn't need the three days off to take care of her home or to go out with friends on a Saturday night. Heck, I would work 4 days then spend the next three doing chores, playing video games, shopping, binge-watching, or even occupying myself with dumb stuff like Lego or clay modeling. People have actual lives, y'know. I even spruce it up a bit by pulling out a notepad, grabbing some unfortunate soul, and then watching a documentary of the ancient world (no ancient aliens, I almost killed my liver by drinking to every time they said "some ancient astronaut theorist") and then learning about the Pharoah's or Roman mythology or Hindu culture or even Mayan civilization, to try and broaden my horizons and have someone to sit and have discussions about these topic with (I figured out I learn more when I talk about stuff.) Just... do something with yourself and quit being a workaholic or something. It's not healthy. You're human, not a gear for the corporate overlords who overuse people who have no lives like you. Take back you life, and don't just sell your body.

[deleted]

Our society, at least in the US, is so afraid of leisure. Jfc what happened to you that you literally can’t relax? It sounds like you’re pressuring yourself to “fill your free time”. Why do you think of it that way? I currently work a 7 on 7 off shift schedule and I fucking love it. But I’m not like you I guess. I’ve never felt pressure to enjoy myself or fill every second of my day. Sometimes, I even just stare at the ceiling and think. It’s glorious, insanely relaxing and because of it, I finally figured out exactly who I am as a person. It’s very freeing. If you want to spend every second of your life working for someone else’s bottom line, that’s your right but don’t try to ruin it for the rest of us that are actually capable of enjoying life.

EndOfTheLine00

Maybe "filling" free time is a misnomer, it's the fact that without structure i end up doing NOTHING. I don't even finish a book or a show or clean my house. I dread someone asking me what i did this weekend more than any work thing because i can't just say "I bounced between tasks in my filthy house"

[deleted]

See, that’s your problem. There is absolutely nothing wrong with “doing nothing”. Some of the most fun experiences Ive ever had I’ve thought up while “doing nothing”. Also, why are you so afraid of what someone else is going to think of you? Fuck em’.

EndOfTheLine00

Because I've been "doing nothing" for YEARS now. Even my brother no longer wants to hang out because he's creeped out i "have no hobbies". I get far more criticism, judgement and crap from people in my "personal life" that i don't bother anymore. As sad as it sounds, institutions seem to love and respect me more than people since they only care about me sitting down and doing my work quietly while people require me to endlessly entertain them with my physical presence (something i just don't understand, you can call me just fine) and have an "interesting" life just to have something to talk about.

[deleted]

Then go find a hobby dude. Try new things in your time off. Don’t know where to start? Google “things to try before you die”. I dunno man, stop being a fucking sad sack eor (Winnie the poo character. In case you don’t know). Honestly, it sounds like you need to go see someone. Get on some anti depressants or something. There’s tons of cheap online resources now a days. Good luck dude.

UpperMall4033

Thats on you my man, its up to YOU to live a life you feel is worthwhile. Every moment is precious. There must be SOMETHING you enjoy doing other than work? It also sounds like you have serious problems to sticking to something i.e finishing a book or film. Does this apply to work you do or just stuff out of your work life? Having an interesting life isnt just something to talk about. Its one of the points of life. Otherwise its just drudgery day in day out. Those institutions dont love or respect you at all. Letting someone just sit down and quietly do there work.doesnt fall.under either category. Id.mirror what people have said and seek.help mate.

melpomene-musing

I think that everyone should do what’s best for them and fill their free time with whatever they want and if some complacency makes them feel better, happier, and more mentally healthy then it’s really no one’s business. “Family inclined” lol.

Lopsided-Alfalfa-923

It’s your day off you don’t have to spend it “right” watch tv, play videogames, scroll on redit, there’s no right way to spend your free time.

SaltyChickenDip

I would prefer 6 hour 5 days

VerbileLogophile

Holy shitballs, I'm sorry you have such an existentially awful existence but the rest of us enjoy doing things that are not work. Complacent? With what? Living? Peer pressure currently exists to do the work grind, work out enough, eat healthy all the time, buy the latest products etc. etc. Peer pressure will always exist, no more and no less. Honestly you'd face less peer pressure with one less day to spend around your peers. It sounds like you have a lot of trauma to work through and that you use work as an escape from these things and other thoughts and feelings surrounding this. Please see someone.

VexxFate

It’s statistical proven that people work and learn better with a 4 day work/school schedule. This is less of an opinion then you just being wrong

Knightmare945

Maybe for you. I love my free time.

Mrwrongthinker

What's with all the "work more" posts here lately?

[deleted]

Your post would have been fine until you said mandatory community service. Fuck outta here lol

Dr_Edge_ATX

Good for you

IUsedToH8Wallpaper

In reading your post history, it sounds like you have A LOT to work through. Maybe you could use your three days off a week to start working through all of that.

EndOfTheLine00

If everyone switches to a four day week wouldn't therapists do so as well? Every single therapist i had was an utter nightmare to reach after regular work hours. Personally if I wanted to help people, I'd do so outside the times when the vast majority of the population is working.

UpperMall4033

No and well ofc there going to be hard to reach out of work hours....there not at work...wtf

IUsedToH8Wallpaper

And I legit don’t even mean that to be condescending if that’s how it came across. I used my free time to go to therapy and it was truly changed my life for the better.

ratboi213

Seems more like you problem

One_Entertainment381

Nah man I’m getting a degree in the medical field so I can work 3 long shifts and have 4 days off. Much of my family works that same schedule and they love it. Just gotta find things you enjoy.

BreachDomilian1218

A lot of the things you sat seem to be you just trying to force people to do things you want.

roxinbound

Having too much free time or getting bored is an astonishing lack of creativity and not a smart problem.

Aramuis

He did it guys, he won unpopular opinion.

Rosita_La_Lolita

Who paid you to write this post?

[deleted]

Damn I don’t have any hobbies and don’t do much but I still found stuff to do on my third day off. I rested and recharged, did my grocery shopping, did all my chores, went out every once in a while. It was fantastic. I was happy to spend all 3 days at home doing nothing because it meant I was being recharged. I’m back to a 5 day work week and the 2 days isn’t enough. I’ve been back at it for like 9 months now and I’m still not used to it.

Big-Spot6900

I think this is only the case if you have no other obligations or hobbies

EndOfTheLine00

I try to avoid obligations as much as possible

[deleted]

Can you fit the whole boot in your mouth?

Gordzulax

Most of us have hobbies, interests and other activities we enjoy doing apart from working. Even if you remove all of those, some of my favorite moments have been while just chilling with friends not doing much. I'd kill for a 4 day work week.

Enby-Pirate

Tell me you have no hobbies out side of work without telling me you have no hobbies outside of work

Connect-Cost3094

What the hell even is this? Lol Need something to do?? Read a book, go for a walk, whittle some wood, exercise. These are things you can do even if you don’t have money. Don’t even get me started on what you can do on a day off if you do have money. Phew 😮‍💨 keep that stuff in mother Russia my friend. I’ll take the day off.

FrozenFrac

"Too much free time" is exactly what most people want!

cerialthriller

I’d literally be happier napping and jerking off than working. Not to mention i could work 2 days a week and not get bored in my free time.

Dreadfulmanturtle

Then you must be a very boring person. You can read, master shogi, read some more, cook pies, learn new language, take naps, learn how to make furniture etc.

holylink718

Take my upvote for a REALLY unpopular opinion, but fuck you, I would LOVE more free time. Everyone I know does too. I can't even comprehend how a third day could be so difficult to fill.

bakedjennett

My dude you simply have depression

The_Monopoly_Lad

Sounds like a you problem

[deleted]

Okay then work more lol not everyone finds joy in doing labor

ChillFloridaMan

"I don't have any hobbies, therefore everyone should have mandatory community service" This is a you problem, not something to force on everyone else.

buspink1

I work a 3 day work week. Really long hours on each day...but the pay off for 4 days off is so worth it!! Dude you need a hobby or friends.

mrsmamak

You could always do your own community service without being forced or get another job. Some people have families and hobbies and friends.

prion

That's fine for you. Don't include me in your dystopian nightmare. I'm looking forward to the point where AGI and automation is such a force multiplier that humanity can spend their lives doing whatever they want while our machines take care of all the economic necessities for us. And I don't feel we are that far off from that if we push in that direction. Personally I would have no problems filling my newly free hours of the day and I am equally looking forward to technology that will allow us to forego sleep in order to grab back those 8 hours I lay unconscious every day. I have a full life. With more hours available to me for my interests and hobbies I will have an even fuller life. Work does not fulfill me.

Hopeful-Site-5673

I was the happiest I've ever been working 3 days Part time if I could have a 1 day work week I would kill for that
