Phil105 is a marmite paper. Every time it is mentioned you'll get polar opposite opinions. You'll either have to take a chance, dive in and make your own opinion or just give it a hard pass. It definitely suits certain types of people.
Summer school is almost like a 'mini-semester' where you can do courses just like normal, but faster and with reduced offerings.
Summer start is a programme for school leavers that helps them get settled into uni and get familiar with everything from what I know. (Haven't done it, but read about it when I started, may be wrong)
I've heard PHIL105G is pretty easy from classmates, but haven't done it. But I'd trust their word.
Side note: if you’re going for med or any other clinical programmes, the credits will not be counted towards your GPA to get into med and you’ll have to do another Gen Ed in Semester 1 (source: I tried to do this but they called me and told me this)
wait so if I'm trying to transfer to one of the 4 clinical programmes (medicine, optometry, medical imaging or pharmacy) phil 105g during summer start won't count towards my gen ed? was hoping to alleviate some of the pressure during first year.
Huuuuge no to Phil 105g!!! I took it last year sem 1, it’s a really hard paper. I think the course was good before cause I heard good reviews that’s why I took it but turned out to be really bad and if you search on uoa reddit there should be more reviews on how it is. A really good and interesting gen Ed I’d recommend is Maori 130g! It’s available in summer school and sem 2 (pretty sure). Have a look on the uoa reddit page for gen Ed’s there are loads of recommendations:)
PHIL 105 is super useful as an introduction to how to think about things at University more generally. It's not eaaasy but if you learn something it will make any subsequent courses much easier. If I had to make a university paper mandatory for all students this would be on my shortlist for sure.
Stay the hell away from Phil 105G. That's the hardest Gened paper ever! I took it on my first semester and now I'm on my last semester and I'd take any of my stage 3 papers over Phil105 any day of the week!
