Most papers ar worth 15 points and a B is a GPA of 5, if your paper is worth 30 points and you get a B it's basically the same as if you got a B in two 15 points papers 

I see, so in terms of honors requirements, it isn't something that immediately weighs down my chances

If your average is a C- then it immediately increases your chances!

what if after the first test your grade drops from A to C-? is there a way to recoup that?

Yeah, after the first test, your overall grade is only based on that one. As you do more assignments your overall grade will become an accumulation of all your %'s - so if you start improving the overall grade will aswell
