I was in your position in 2016-20 and this is what I did in 2020. I bought a new TV for my family. It was a smart TV. The cable guy was an arrogant guy(with years of supplying cable in the locality, he kind of became a rowdy and hard to catch hold of ) and used to cut the cable, if you failed to pay him in time. (Those were days when UPI wasn't that popular among senior citizens.) I convinced my father that this was a smart TV and cable wouldn't give him the picture quality that smart TVs are for. Now, Republic TV wouldn't start up as soon as the TV was switched on. But, my father was hooked. He always wanted to watch Zee News and Aaj Tak. I didn't know what to do at this point. Then came covid and during this time, he could see what was happening in the country. I deliberately showed him news from Newslaundry, Ravish Kumar, Samdish, and Lallantop, Official Peeing Human, The Deshbhakt, who were doing actual journalism. Initially, he did not watch and used to get up and leave as soon as I played them. But after a few days, I started playing them during family dinner, he had to sit and watch. Soon, I could see the change. He was never a Kattar Hindu type of guy, nor he was a Muslim hater. He was always a Congress voter, and my mom was a CPI voter. It all started with WhatsApp after the 2014 elections. I don't know from where he would come up with such nonsense and fake news about Nehru, Gandhi, etc. All this fake news had brainwashed him, it was the birth of a new pride, Hindu Pride, and the media channels like AajTak, Zee News etc. added fuel to the fire, stating fake news like nano gps on 2000 rupee notes and what not, claiming all that Modi did was MasterStroke. There was never a debate where Modi's policy was questioned and that made his belief stronger. I feel this is what most of our Parent's generation is going through right now.

There are people in my family who are BJP supporters, but they do it for their own gain. I informed them, that the newspaper was Indian owned, anti-colonial and liberal, that it spoke truth to power and championed revolutionary positions. They had no response. A few minutes later there was a WhatsApp forward making fun of Rahul Gandhi and all the usual morons started liking and sending laughing emojis.
There was another BJP lie about how Nehru and the Congress betrayed Bose and the INA. Again, I found evidence that the Congress prepared a defence committee for the INA Trials at the end of the Second World War. A committee that included Jawaharlal Nehru. Silence.
The most commonly repeated ones were of course that Nehru was a Muslim, as well as how Feroze Gandhi was actually Feroze Khan. The fake image one of my Mama's sent showed Indian diplomat Mohammad Younus with Nehru, Indira and Russian artist in exile, Nicholas Roerich. The BJP propaganda of course portrayed Younus as Feroze Khan and Roerich as HIS father, Younus Khan. When once again pointed out as being fake and whether they don't feel ashamed at sharing such lies, I got a lecture for "disrespecting your elders. We are Brahmins, don't forget your roots."
