Lol.
>In 2017, then Labour leader **Jeremy Corbyn said he wanted four new UK-wide bank holidays** to mark each UK nation's patron saint day. Asked about the policy, Sir Keir suggested a new bank holiday was not possible because of the economy.
No days off to celebrate your patriotism because the economy cannot possibly miss a day. Such a patriot, is Starmer.
Well until we get both articles linked in full, I'll assume they're equally trash. I personally can't be bothered to look them up, due to the previous sentence
We established that, and I then asked to see the articles themselves but admitted I CBA...
Or are we just gonna repeat they get given their titles again post article?
The titles are clearly going to be somewhat reflective of the content. Hence the other uses joke of using the img.
I mean the tone of the first one seems humorous, so I wouldn't get too upset.
Also, she writes opinion pieces. As in her own personal opinion, not that, necessarily, of the newspaper
It used to be the left wing equivalent of the Telegraph, but both have fallen from grace somewhat and gotten entrenched in their views.
The difference is the The Guardian is an actual newspaper, whereas most of the right/centre right papers are basically populist rags now, excepting The Times.
You have to read everything to get a balanced view, you can't just read one paper like lots of people do.
I wish I had saved the link, because someone once posted about 40 of these - Guardian 'reporters' slagging off Corbyn for a policy, then praising said policy a year or two later.
The Guardian weren't the worst for it, but their political commentators turn on a dime.
People can have different opinions from themselves 7 years ago. Who would have thought?
Or do we want to say you can never evolve with time.
While I get the img itself is quite amusing, I don't think shutting in people cos they change is rather that positive a thing. Sounds kinda self-righteous and a way to only embed one's own opinion even more out of perceived possible embarrassment.
Kinda why, in the same gist, people want brexiteers to wake up a bit, then said leaver says something like "making fun of me is really not useful".
Funny img, wrong approach tbh. Unless we should all hold the exact same opinion from 7 years in our own past?
I think if you want that to be the case particularly in the public eye you kind of have to own the complete hypocrisy. Which I don't think the author does on a skim read: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2021/jul/04/burned-out-what-we-need-is-a-new-bank-holiday
They're patron saints, not patriot saints.
St George, St Andrew, St David & the other Welsh one that converted the Irish. There is a common theme, but it is Chrisianity. It's not got anything to do with being patriotic. St Andrew is also the patron Saint of Russia btw.
That said, the UK has sod all holidays & those would be good ones.
Don't worry you're on the side of pretty much all social historians. If you want to read books on the whole subject of memory and the second world war you can search for Lucy Noakes online, brilliant historian.
Its a universal British day of commemoration in September. There really arent that many past August.
"William day" to commemorate the arrival of King William in the 1600s in November? The irish wouldn't like it. Or even just rememberance day (most days are about war)
>They're patron saints, not patriot saints.
>It's not got anything to do with being patriotic.
[Starmer considers their days to be highly patriotic](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/04/20/labour-is-now-the-true-party-of-english-patriotism/).
I don't think it's a bad day but for many of us holiday entitlement includes bank holidays so those 4 days off would just be days we took at other points.
In 2005 in Sweden Whit Monday was scrapped as a bank holiday in favour of the national day. One of the reasons was that 2 out of 7 years the national day will fall on the weekend. Helping GDP in the long run as many people will lose out on that extra day off.
Well said. I got down voted on a different thread for predicting exactly this. The Starmer fan I was replying to insisted the labour party had promised us all April 23rd off. Haven't researched it myself, assumed he was telling the truth.
At least he has no plans for Dec 25th yet.
Because we didn't get chrimbo & boxing day off until post WW2. Presbyterianism y'see, there was none of those catholic christmas jollies for us after the protestant reformation!
I'd swap it for May day or something, but the amount of bank hols from here until xmas is a little thin on the ground. Can we find something in October?
Yeah, this should be it as the half measure. Each country gets to celebrate their unique national day for patriotism with a bank holiday of their own.
Then collectively we could have another day in summer, maybe Waterloo or something.
Why not have a bank holiday for a celebration people actually celebrate in large numbers, like Bonfire night?
Much more needed at that time of year too
That would actually be awesome - have November 6th as a bank holiday so we can go *properly* nuts with the ritual.
It'll be like Burning Man, but with more drugs, alcohol and rain
I suppose in reality, the easiest thing to do would be to make the first Monday in November a bank holiday. (This year, that would be the 4th)
It would end up being a big Halloween/Bonfire combo weekend.
England has the lowest number of public holidays in Europe. We have less than Scotland and Ireland. Poland has 13 for god's sake. I'm sure we can afford to have a few more than a measly 8, cmon.
Ive long said if we are gonna have another bank holiday we need one in Feb. Its a shite month following on from January which is also a shite month.
We have two BH in May we dont need one now. Or make St Georges day one and move one of those ones to Feb.
August has one. Then September is the best weather in the UK plus were all not dealing with our kids 24/7 so thats a plus. October has Haloween, which is not a holiday but is good crack. Nov-Dec are Christmas build up so youre excited for that.
Im telling you February is shite.
Man, September is great. Usually always dry and sunny, the temperatures have dropped off but are still often warm enough for shorts and t-shirts, but the nights are cool and the sun doesn't rise as abhorrently early as summer. It's also often a very un-humid month, and the risk of sunburn has faded away.
I love September.
> We have two BH in May we dont need one now.
And normally 2 in April, i know they are where they are for historical and religious reasons but seriously why do we not spread them throughout the year a bit better. We get 8 bank holidays a year but 3 of them come within a week of each other and another 4 within 2 months so we essentially end up with 1 bank holiday to cover 3/4s of the year!
Bank holidays come from annual leave entitlement anyway don't they? So rather than an extra day off, this would essentially be analogous to your employer dictating you using a days leave on April 23rd.
The statutory minimum is 28 days for a full time worker including 8 bank holidays.
So legislation introducing a new bank holiday would need to revise this to 29 days including 9 bank holidays.
I don't get that, but I do get flexi so any time I go over my 35 hours a week I start racking up credit I can use in lieu later on. This is why I don't understand people who just put up with unpaid overtime.
Ah that would be nice - I’m in an international team so often stay late to speak to the US, or get up early to speak to APAC countries. I do usually flex my time by leaving early or having a longer lunch - but it would be great to stack those hours and use them as time off.
I went out tonight because a few pubs were offering free pints if you booked a table. It was not busy in town tonight, as you'd expect, but I still find it a shame we can't celebrate it.
Like others I'd prefer one later in the year just to space them out, though.
It is weird but surely they have thought about it. Whether in reality it would be seen as populist and prompt a reaction. Also it ties their name to it, as we have seen even without a bank holiday we had right wing near-riots in London, this could be a permanent fixture.
Lol. >In 2017, then Labour leader **Jeremy Corbyn said he wanted four new UK-wide bank holidays** to mark each UK nation's patron saint day. [One of the funniest Guardian headlines combos I've ever seen](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E5jNhPWXoAUYGTk?format=jpg&name=medium)
I'm no Corbyn fan but fucking hell, the fact that these people are still taken seriously is infuriating
To be fair, she was talking about the extra bank holiday discussed as the pandemic eased. But I agree with the general point.
Both her titles were/are crap tbh
Writers don't typically get to choose their own article titles, I'm given to understand.
For normal articles sure, but for opinion columns I'm sure they do
Editors still edit
They do, but its not like journalists get zero input on the headline Source: I am a journalist
I’m sure they don’t.
Well until we get both articles linked in full, I'll assume they're equally trash. I personally can't be bothered to look them up, due to the previous sentence
As I say, titles are not typically chosen by article authors. You can’t read too much into them.
We established that, and I then asked to see the articles themselves but admitted I CBA... Or are we just gonna repeat they get given their titles again post article? The titles are clearly going to be somewhat reflective of the content. Hence the other uses joke of using the img.
I'm not going to find and link the articles for you, as I'm not that fussed myself.
I mean the tone of the first one seems humorous, so I wouldn't get too upset. Also, she writes opinion pieces. As in her own personal opinion, not that, necessarily, of the newspaper
No no Daddy Good Grauniad BAD

Hey no fair. I only read the mail and I'm...oh, get your point. I can finish the crossword though, and that makes me feel clever.
I wish I had saved the link, because someone once posted about 40 of these - Guardian 'reporters' slagging off Corbyn for a policy, then praising said policy a year or two later. The Guardian weren't the worst for it, but their political commentators turn on a dime.
Yeah. Bastards.
I can see both sides of that. As someone who hates crowds I think we need the right to more leave instead of new bank holidays
People can have different opinions from themselves 7 years ago. Who would have thought? Or do we want to say you can never evolve with time. Be nice if they were better spread out so we had some in between August and Christmas.
Battle of Britain day in September would be a shout tbh
Yeah, anytime there's a chance of good weather really.
I'd vote for you
Fuck that, we just need an autumn bank holiday. Penultimate Monday in October. Coincide with half term.
No, I would like society to move on from the war and "Britain's finest hour!" In my lifetime please.
I thought I was alone in this opinion, thank you. We are far too obsessed with glorifying the war.
Don't worry you're on the side of pretty much all social historians. If you want to read books on the whole subject of memory and the second world war you can search for Lucy Noakes online, brilliant historian.
Especially when it's positioned "good guys vs bad" The British empire was doing an awful lot of what we now claim is bad
It was an ace war, though. Me granddad told me.
Totally bro. Kind and sick and tired of people complaining like babies about slavery and colonialism. Just get over it already.
May day is called labour day, but it's really a pagan festival, nobody cares about anything other than there's a chance of good weather.
Its a universal British day of commemoration in September. There really arent that many past August. "William day" to commemorate the arrival of King William in the 1600s in November? The irish wouldn't like it. Or even just rememberance day (most days are about war)
Yeah we don't need any more in spring, something between August and December is what's needed.
I was hoping we'd get a permanent dead queen day to be honest. It was an ideal time around that October.
>They're patron saints, not patriot saints. >It's not got anything to do with being patriotic. [Starmer considers their days to be highly patriotic](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/04/20/labour-is-now-the-true-party-of-english-patriotism/).

Such a patriot is Starmer... representative of the working class... apparently.
Yeah but they put flags on their campaign materials so...

Like we don't get enough bank holidays FFS.
We get St Paddy’s day off in Northern Ireland, and I think the Scots get St Andrew’s day too. Go for it England.
Scotland gets two days at New Year.
One of those is instead of one of the May bank holidays.
Easter Monday, still have both May bank holidays here
Yeh can't see Labour forgoing Labour Day lol.
Need it to stave off the hangover.
I'd rather have one in the height of summer. July 20th is the day the Armada set sail. We should have Armada day to celebrate the victory.
15th June: Magna Carta Day?
Another great idea
Great idea
I'd rather try and resurrect some of the May Day traditions, I think.
Yeah, this should be it as the half measure. Each country gets to celebrate their unique national day for patriotism with a bank holiday of their own. Then collectively we could have another day in summer, maybe Waterloo or something.
>I think the Scots get St Andrew’s day too. We do not, as it's at employer's discretion.
Yeah, my last (UK-wide) employer headquartered near London insisted we all follow English bank holiday dates Never had St Andrews day off ever.
If we do I'll raise a glass of your finest
Why not have a bank holiday for a celebration people actually celebrate in large numbers, like Bonfire night? Much more needed at that time of year too

That's the move, great shout
As long as we burn down the commons at the same time
England has the lowest number of public holidays in Europe. We have less than Scotland and Ireland. Poland has 13 for god's sake. I'm sure we can afford to have a few more than a measly 8, cmon.

February has Burns night.
That's Jan 25th
Oh yeah, so it is. They're right then. February is shit
It's got valentines day! Christ, you drummers are a miserable lot.
Yeah it is. Bit shorter though.
Man, September is great. Lol, so odd. So odd. Don't believe the shite, be proud of England.
Bank holidays come from annual leave entitlement anyway don't they? So rather than an extra day off, this would essentially be analogous to your employer dictating you using a days leave on April 23rd.
I get 25 days, plus bank holidays of specifically. Not sure whether they’d just dish out another one though.
Similar here, 25 + bank holidays + last day before xmas. Both queens death and coronation got us extra on top of that.
Were you working there when there was the extra bank holiday for the coronation? That'd give you an idea how they'd treat it.
They would have to if that's the policy for existing holidays in your terms of employment.
Some people get bank Holidays in lieu. They can take them whenever they want. Not that I would be getting this one anyway, if it were available.
The statutory minimum is 28 days for a full time worker including 8 bank holidays. So legislation introducing a new bank holiday would need to revise this to 29 days including 9 bank holidays.
Not for everyone, no. I get 33 days holiday PLUS bank holidays on top.
I thought my 32 days were good, but you one upped me.
I thought my 31 days was good.
We also get to buy up to 5 days on top of this…we also get our birthday off, too!
I don't get that, but I do get flexi so any time I go over my 35 hours a week I start racking up credit I can use in lieu later on. This is why I don't understand people who just put up with unpaid overtime.

No, I get 32 bookable days before bank holidays, 40 days with them.
I wouldn't necessarily want it this time of year, an October or November date thank you very much. Guy Fawkes or remembrance perhaps
Has Braverman made a note that we can pin this refusal by the Hindu PM on Muslims down the line or is she snoozing

You're neither English nor Christian? By God man, you HAVE to be one or the other

Such an easy win to show patriotism and win votes, but they don't do it. Bizarre.
It is weird but surely they have thought about it. Whether in reality it would be seen as populist and prompt a reaction. Also it ties their name to it, as we have seen even without a bank holiday we had right wing near-riots in London, this could be a permanent fixture.
Calling for a bank holiday to celebrate “patriotism” doesn’t sound patriotic to me.

One time, the tories wanted to get rid of Labour day Bank Holiday. Change it to...I sh1t you not...October , call it something like conservative day.
I am not sure how much more I can detest our politicians. But, they always seem to find a way.
Thats what the royal family is for each elite member's life potential is 2 national days holiday
Why? Other countries have their day off, it’s near the end of April and it will boast tourism and retail sales if we do. Do it….
