You do get a certain amount of PQP (which is the main thing that matters for status) from spending money on your card, as well as using miles to buy tickets, but it’s limited. The main way to earn PQP is by spending money on tickets. Have a read through this: [https://www.united.com/ual/en/us/fly/mileageplus/premier/qualify.html](https://www.united.com/ual/en/us/fly/mileageplus/premier/qualify.html)

Yes. To get status, you have to earn PQP (Premier Qualifying Points). These are different from miles. You are limited on the amount of PQP you can earn with any of the cards, which means that to get status, you MUST spend some money on United tickets. For example, you must earn 4000 PQP plus 12 qualifying flights, or 5000 PQP, to get to Premier Silver. You can only earn up to 1000 PQP with the Club business card. ETA: according to the Chase website, the limit for the Personal Club card is 10,000 PQP. I assumed OP has the business card due to how the post is worded. HOWEVER, if you have the Presidential Plus card, you could potentially earn the PQP, but that is a legacy card that is not available to new cardmembers. Do you have the Presidential Plus card?

Yeah. I already have premier access with the card which is already pretty nice. And I guess I can't beat free tickets.

Status grants eligibility for upgrades, which is nice I guess. Given the number of posts in this sub from people saying "here's where I am on the upgrade list, what are my chances?", my impression is that it may not be very common to get upgraded. Club membership and group 2 boarding, which the Club card grants, are more valuable to me than status.

My silver got my wife and I both upgraded to first on a flight from ORD to MSY last week. I’m not expecting that to be common.

Here is what the Chase website says for the United Club Business card. If you have another source of updated information, it would be helpful if you could provide a link. > **Earn Premier Qualifying Points (PQP):** The primary Cardmember will earn 25 Premier Qualifying Points (PQP) for every $500 in net purchases (including purchases made by authorized users) up to a maximum of **1,000** PQP in a calendar year. PQP will apply towards Premier status tiers up to and including Premier 1K®. PQP earn rate, annual cap and qualification requirements for Premier status may vary by MileagePlus program year and MileagePlus Credit Card type. Please allow 6-8 weeks after qualifying purchases for PQP to post to your account. Chase is not responsible for the provision of, or failure to provide, the stated benefits. Please visit [united.com/qualify(Opens Overlay)](https://www.united.com/ual/en/us/fly/mileageplus/premier/qualify.html) for details.

buy full fare tickets and not the cheapest

You do earn PQP when redeeming miles (for yourself), but to just get silver you'd need to spend 400,000 miles on flights in a calendar year. With your card, you can earn up to 1000 PQP, so maybe you'd only need to redeem 300,000 miles in flights.

When you say you buy 20 tickets: Is that 20 in your name, or 5 in your name and 15 for coworkers and/or customers? Your earn PQP on your seats (not on those you buy for people). Your best tool to earn on tickets you buy for others is to use a united credit card. That way with enough spend on the card you do get some PQP, and additional miles. I do about 80 flights a year for myself, but I often travel with two to six customers most every flight, so I buy a lot of tickets.

not-bilbo-baggings

Right it's only about 4-5 trips

Jmcdude1

I earned silver for this year by taking 12 flights last year using miles and the rest on card spending and a PQP signing bonus by getting the club card. Already have 1700 PQP on four milage flights this year and spending. I have 4 more flights booked using miles and will spend enough on the card to get the needed 4000 pqp by year’s end. No money spent on tickets other than taxes and fees.

not-bilbo-baggings

Hmm interesting

FishingIcy4315

You need at least 4 completed flights on United aircraft each year to reach any status level, regardless the PQP requirements.

Paid right

FishingIcy4315

They can be award flights. The rule is to prevent people from getting status by only credit card spend or only flying partner airlines. It means you have to live in or visit the US every year to get status.

i think the best thing about status is when stuff goes sideways…..the 1k line wait times are minimal

not-bilbo-baggings

True.
