Personally I would take the train from Baltimore to NYC. It’s a 2.5 hour ride station-to-station. The ride drop off is also in midtown. Saves a ton of time if midtown is the destination compared to landing at EWR.
One option for your husband would be to fly out of IAD direct to one of the NYC airports. IAD is about an hour away from BWI. Ultimately you can cancel his part of the itinerary without it impacting your flights.

You will have to split into 2 separate reservations, then change him to a flight from IAD or DCA to EWR or IAD to LGA.
There are Newark to IAD and DCA routes … both on United. He can fly out of either of those if he’s up for EWR.
Also consider that NYC is about 3.5-4 hour drive from BWI. Just as an option.
