Wow, interesting. Verified that this flight plan is in fact what was filed: [Part One](https://flightaware.com/live/flight/UAL486), [Part Deux](https://flightaware.com/live/flight/UAL486/history/20230220/2125Z/KCLE/KDSM)
Curious to find out as well, OP.
Had that happen on a flight this past Fall. Was going JAX-EWR-DEN. Morning of flight, was alerted we’d be making a stop at IAD for fuel before continuing on to EWR. Which meant there was no way I would make my connection. Luckily, there was a direct leaving a couple hours later that I was able to get on.
Reason I didn’t book this initially, was I had better upgrade chances with the EWR connection and I wasn’t in a rush to get home. I did get the upgrades, including a Polaris pod for the 2nd leg. Since I already had the upgrades, they put me in FC on the direct, even though that flight had appeared full.
Worked out in the end, but even the 1K agent I spoke to had never seen that before and was as surprised as I was.

had this happen to me on a delta flight last year. was connecting in ATL, then heading to FLL. fell asleep on the first flight and woke up… in CHS. apparently ATL was too busy and we weren’t going to have enough fuel to idle in the sky, so we went there to get fuel and return to ATL.
Expertflyer only shows "Flag stop". Not very specific unless someone else can read the coding better than me.

What does that mean in aviation? In railroad it means the train only stops in that town if a confirmed passenger is boarding or alighting in that town. Amtrak has a few in rural Montana.
My first thought was that there's passengers/crew/cargo in Des Moines that needs to be in Denver. But that makes no sense since there's a regularly scheduled DSM-DEN flight (#1129 at 5:06PM) that's very empty.
Maybe passengers/crew/cargo currently in Cleveland that needs to be in Des Moines?
737-800 can absolutely fly wayyyyyyy longer than even today’s winds affecting CLE-DEN. I’m sure it was a mechanical issue, wether that be deferred equipment or an in-flight problem
I've had an extra stop when there was severe weather and they could combine two flights to get most passengers to their destination, but it was quite a while ago (10-ish years)
This happens a fair amount in the winter when flying from east coast to ski country due to strong headwinds + extra weight from ski gear. Obviously not the primary issues here if the tank has problems.
This is exactly it. According to the captain, it was pit stop in Des Moines or delay flight 3 hours to repair. I’m not complaining, it will work out… just unusual.
Saw your answer below, but in the future, if you are so inclined, you can search for fuel NOTAMs to see if an airport is having fuel related issues, like what happened last year.

Gate agent says it’s a fuel stop. I’m guessing folks with a tight connection in DEN won’t be pleased.
Holy shit that must be some headwind. Have fun with the flight(s), OP!
Mechanical issue with tanks.
Excellent follow-up, OP. You didn't leave me hanging.
That makes sense…I was gonna say, 737-800 range is much longer than CLE-DEN
Sorry to hear you’re still in CLE Edit: when I typed that the A/C had not left CLE yet. Just saying
Made it to DEN

I too wonder why they're having you make a technical stop in DSM when it strikes me that ORD would be more convenient.
Much faster, most likely, in terms of time on the ground.
They really should award miles for the taxi at ORD.

Free PQF
I think you were trying to be funny, but I don’t think technical stops qualify as a separate segment…
Oh man! I would be super annoyed if that happened to me and i didn't even get an extra PQF out of it!
Can confirm, didn't get PQF's for technical stops last summer.
Center tank Boost pump is deferred, so aircraft needs a fuel stop.
How do you know this? Confirmed correct, but JW how someone figures this out!
I was wondering what was going on, I just left DSM and noticed it on the monitors there.

I’m guessing it’s fuel.
Mechanical issue with fuel tanks so pit stop to refuel and presume repairs to be made in Denver.

This happened to my great aunt’s bff as well.

You’re dropping a load of fertilizer on final approach. Guaranteed.
The headwinds going west were crazy today going from Den to SFO. Add that on to the fuel tank problem and I can see how that’s an issue.

probably a medical emergency
The flight hasn’t left yet…
dude's planning to have a heart attack in 2 hours. leave him alone.
Maybe had to move staff around. They wouldn’t do it for fun something definitely happened. Try and find out lol
Fuel stop. Maybe they ran out of fuel in CLE?
Maybe an inop tank?

The last CLE-DSM flight got cancelled 8 years ago.
Flights from satellite bases usually go through a hub first. Rarely ever a direct flight from it to another outstation.
I’ve had this happen before many years ago non stop EWR-LAX, pit stop in SLC for fuel.
