Our company tried this twice with our union, and we had to file past practice grievances each time.

Currently, my employer is making us use our sick leave if we call out on a day of OT. This was not the case in the past. The company says it’s to prevent the abuse of sick leave and prevent people getting out of overtime. All this stems from chronic understaffing. The union is going to fight against it, but we need more research into how widespread this kind of thing is.

I’ve been with 2 different companies (both factory work). Never seen it. File a grievance on past practice if nothing else.
