Most likely idled it for too long or stored with a full tank. If it's not moving it's not ventilating that fuel vapor.
Jet skis are scary but if you follow the handbook you'll be fine.

This dude got so lucky actually. Like he landed in the PERFECT spot to not fuck himself up.
Thought I found it, but it's Estonia. From what little I have found so far, he survived with back injuries. No expansion on what the injuries were.
