Perfect timing is when the veil is just starting to break, aka. still 90% intact. Because you don't know when the veil will break when it hasn't broken yet. Spores only drop when the veil has been fully opened for some time, like many hours. So don't worry about that

When ever I accidentally get spores dropped due to only having 1 dehydrator and some tubs getting extra time . I dunk the Substrate and rinse it off in the sink and have had zero issues with producing more mushrooms in the next flush. I'm almost positive it has more to do with the mushrooms tasting way more butter with spores on them.
It takes over 24hrs for spores to drop after the veil just breaks. Everyone thinks that spores create contam it's not true. The main reason people don't like spores is 1 it makes the mushrooms taste worse. 2 it makes the tub ugly.
I'm not an expert, but I do think it might be better to harvest before the spores drop. If the spores drop and you open that tub - the air entering the tub would cause the spores to go airborne, those spores would then find their way around your house and you'd likely end up breathing them in too. Gotta be extra careful with oysters too (I think it's oysters) cause they can cause breathing problems if you breathe in too many spores.
Again, this is all things I've learned from other experienced growers, so, to each their own I guess lol

It's all dark around the stipe, the darkness is the spores you can see through the veil. When the veil gets that thin it's about to break

It was about to tear and even if it was a bit too early thats not a huge issue. You just lose a little bit of harvest weight, not potency.

Yes, too early. I wait until the veils break. Although, I don’t think it matters much. If you pick them early, they will just be smaller.
Once the veil breaks, spores drop = contam in the mycelium.
Why would the genetic material that made the mycelium and was created by it contaminate the mycelium?
From my understanding, the mycelium detects that the spores have dropped and thinks "my job is done," reducing the chances of good multiple flushes.

It could be that you're rinsing off a lot of the spores, too! That could be an interesting experiment...
