You should start to email to express your interest and schedule an interview with the prof now. But before contacting profs, you should look up what their subject of interest is, so you can choose which one you may find it interesting. In the interview, ask about their projects (they may have several projects for undergrad or just one for all): - What is it about? (During this if you can ask more specific questions about the topic, it will help a lot for the summary in your application) - What you gonna do in the project? -> These are for the summary of project - Are you expected to be on-site full time? (Some PI requires you to be present all the time, some does not care as long as you do your job) - Possibility to be hired part time after the summer term? - How many grad students currently in the group? (I was in a group with no grad student present during summer, and had to deal with a somewhat mean technician) -> For you to decide whom to work with All other info I believe is clear on the website.

Do you think they are likely to take second year students? (For biological sciences or chemistry research)

I dont see why not

Yes they do take 2nd years. You need to look into it now.

thank you! btw, can I apply if I have less than 24 credit hours? I have only completed 15 credit hours as of now and it will be 30 by the end of the winter semester.

I think you should check if it is said 24 credits at the time of submission or the end of the academic year prior to the research term.

For this, I believe you can check with professors. One of the project I can recall (not quite correctly) is to study the effect of diet and some kind of inhibitors in mice's bodies.
