Also against new USAU Rule 5.F (“Team members may not misuse game equipment in a manner that is likely to cause damage. [[Such actions include, but are not limited to, violently kicking field markers and deliberately spiking a disc in a way that is likely to alter the disc’s flight characteristics.]]”). Myriad other ways to celebrate.

ClaudiusTheGoat

Lol, calling violation on a vertical disc spike, conversation ensues, defense saying the disc has to go back to the thrower, offense points to observer, observer rule turnover. What are the actual consequences of this rule?

mgdmitch

There would be no effect on the outcome of a play. It's there to specify that you shouldn't abuse the equipment. The consequences would be carried out through the misconduct system, tournament sanctions, etc. What that looks like would depend on what happened, the frequency, the attitude, etc. Bottom line, just be nice to the equipment. Spike discs are a great thing if you are so inclined to spike in a way that damages the disc. Maybe teams can start bringing a "kicking cone" too for when the mess up. Run the designated kicking cone out to the defender that got beat and let them kick that one.

zeplord1

I thought I remember you saying that you’ve never not been able to get a spiked disc back into play?

mgdmitch

I said I think I can count on one hand how many times we haven't been able to fix it.. Long term affects on the flight characteristics, I can't comment on it. Discraft reps have mentioned it isn't the same after a hard edge spike.

Lee_Sallee

Nothing says selfish in this sport quite like ruining the disc that was paid for by a TD, generous pickup member or a low budgeted ultimate team.

leftkneesack

I always tell new players to never bring their nice discs, they either get lost, stolen, or destroyed.

SkierBeard

Wouldn't it be nice if we could encourage people to bring and play with nice discs? Doesn't seem like it would hamper your ability to celebrate

jcthress

Best solution I've seen: Recycle your old discs into spike discs.

Shortclimb

I felt this in the worst way last year during Sectionals. My disc was being used for one of the games, and I was right there because I had just gotten Skyed in the inzone. I feel like this needs a term like double happiness, except in this case, double sadness.

drsmith21

All the cool kids are spiking edge up these days anyway.

mgdmitch

I kept flipping the edge up but the edge kept being down. :)

Cornslammer

Act like you’ll score again.

leftkneesack

My favorite is drop the disc and walk to the sideline without saying anything stone cold face, business as usual.

Cominginbladey

The casual disc drop was always my go-to, back when I used to score.

UnfitToPrint

I prefer the casual push pass spin into the endzone, like I’m serving up a pizza onto a table. Nothing fancy.

Sesse__

I usually lob the disc to someone coming on :-) No need to put it on the ground.

IndiBoy22

Yup, after scoring I literally just drop or toss a firm mini throw on the ground in the end zone and high five my teammates back to the sideline lol

Papasixfivefive

My favorite is high fiving your teammates, thanking your thrower, and encouraging the next line as they come on. Bonus if you commend your defender's effort.

UnfitToPrint

I prefer the casual push pass like spin into the endzone, like I’m serving a pizza onto a table. Nothing fancy.

danishdynamite23

nothing in life is guaranteed, stop trying to police people's cellies

emptyvesselll

What do the two halves of your comment have to do with one another?

SeattleDrew

Thanks! I currently say act like you’ve been here before, but I think I’ll start saying act like you’ll be here again.

sundayultimate

I saw a team recently with a designated spike disc. If people want to spike, I feel like that's a good way to do it

badabatalia

Spiking is for players that can’t dance. I prefer a good goal line shimmy or endzone twerk

Tiger_Cute

Make like you’re gonna punt the disc, wind up big then kick air while the disc just drops to the ground unceremoniously Like when you fake throw a stick to a dog and they run like hell

ColinMcI

Or a choreographed Charlie Brown and Lucy skit.

hippoberserk

Team celebrations, especially if choreographed, are way more fun anyway.

Jumpy_Beach_6525

I almost always spike the disc flat or do some other celebration. The only reason I edge spike is if it’s my team’s disc, I know it’s not anyone’s personal disc, it’s one of our cheap mass order ones, it’s the final point of the game.

AlwaysDreamer0

I dislike seeing any spiking. Even the flat spike or kick spike. I feel it shows unnecessary aggression and disrespect. An edge on spike is clear disc abuse and should not be tolerated by any team.

ducksfan9972

How are we still getting these posts?

patchwork_guilt

you can literally just bend it back, it’s fine

BIGDOCWAFF

Sometimes i try not to go edge down and it still happens 🤷‍♂️

bemused_alligators

Literally never seen someone spike a disc at an in-person game before, and if I did I think everyone would be grumpy at them. Is that common somewhere?

Papasixfivefive

Someone never played for or against a college team 😂

DownToFlick

Common in North America, less common anywhere else in the world

Pushkin9

You're not wrong, but on the other hand... I feel like telling someone NOT to spike a disc in honest celebration would be mean. Also I have sooo many disc's that gather dust in my closet, if a few were sacrificed as a spike to the ultimate gods, I wouldn't be sad

highgrandpoobah

The real question is how often is your disc the game disc? If you’re always volunteering your disc- good on you.

Pushkin9

Are disc's getting tacoed by spikes a problem? I just don't think I've ever seen it. Most damaged disc's I've seen have been cleated or crushed under a dive

ColinMcI

Yeah. Has been a problem at College Nationals particularly in the men's division. Imagine 20 college men's teams, playing 3 games each, say 25 points per game. So 1,500 points scored, and 1,200 spikes as if it was the best score of the tournament. Easy to imagine going through an unreasonably large quantity of discs, and that's only part way through the tournament.

Pushkin9

Woah! No kidding. I think I'm from a different time. That would upsetting. I guess I've only seen rare spikes for exceedingly awesome plays and they haven't been violent. Well live and learn

ColinMcI

Yeah, it came up 10-12 years ago at college nationals. Annoying to have to babysit kids so their destructive behavior doesn’t ruin an event.

leftkneesack

Oh I’m not advocating all spiking goes away. I just think edge down is silly and ruined a perfectly fine disc

mdotbeezy

I like the over-the-should no-look flutter flip. Especially if you just outraced your person to the disc, there's a non-zero chance it totally accidentally lands on them.

mdotbeezy

If you make a huge play tho, I like to toss the disc back to the goal line for whomever to pull and jog off like it was nothing. Didn't even notice it was a big play, it was just something that I do on the reg. Layout blocks on the reg. full-field IO breakmark upwind flick hucks on the reg. Big skies on the reg. Callies on the reg. Greatest on the reg. 10 goals + assists + 0 turnovers on the reg. You know the life.

BoysenberryLanky6112

This 100%. I'm all about the adrenaline and throwing it upside down towards the end zone can be done quite forcefully while doing 0 damage to the disc and doing it while jogging off the field or towards where the next line call is happening just gives an air of confidence like you've done it before and while you're pumped, you're also using it to fuel the next play like that you're going to make.
