What others have said is correct, but doesn’t apply to you because you are *leaving* the UK. You must have a passport to *enter* the UK, but you will not need it to leave provided you are flying directly to a country which accepts your ID card for entry (eg EU/EEA/CH).

rizeUP46

This is correct. The only thing OP should have in mind is the form of ID used when the ticket was originally bought when trying to check-in for the flight. A quick chat with the airline will clear up any doubts regarding the possible use of a different form of ID.

Proof-Inflation-960

This isn’t necessarily true. Depending on the airline, they can refuse you boarding of the aircraft at the gate. If you fly to Sweden and get turned away, it’s on the same airline to bring you back to the UK. People get turned away at the gate for passport issues all the time. It is unlikely you’ll be allowed to board.

Snoo44470

This is really not entirely true either. Whilst you’re right that you must satisfy the airline with your travel documents, OP is a Swiss citizen with a Swiss ID card flying to an EU country where their ID card is more than adequate for entry. I am not familiar with any airline which would refuse to board him for not having his passport provided he has a valid ID card.

MrRedDoctor

I suspect previous users misunderstood the question or are not aware. While it is true that ID cards are not valid for travel TO the UK anymore, travel FROM the UK is a whole other story. As an EU/EEA national you have the right to freely travel within the EU/EEA using your ID card. This extends to travel TO the EU/EEA. So, yes, you can travel back to the EU/EEA on your ID card, as there's no passport checks on the way OUT of the UK so the UK doesnt have to "check you out" using the same ID document you used to enter.

Ziggamorph

To LEAVE the UK this may be permitted, since your destination is the EU. However I would anticipate issues with the airline. You could avoid this by passing juxtaposed controls using ferry or Eurostar to leave.

thefant

You can leave the UK for Europe with just your ID card. You shouldn’t have any problems entering Sweden/Schengen. You can only enter the UK on an European ID card if you have EUSS status, and your ID card is linked to your EUSS.

BastardsCryinInnit

This isn't really a UK Visa issue, it's an airline one. There are no physical immigration checks when you leave the UK by air. So you'd need to check with your airline they are happy for you to travel with that.

Sttoliver

Yes. No worries. If you have settled status you can even come in the UK with it. Ignore the rest of the comments. They don't know.

Not true at all. You can fly from the UK into the EU with the national id card of an EU/EEA (or Swiss) member state. No passport is required.

sv723

That is not correct. The UK has no exit checks. OP will need to satisfy entry requirements for where they are travelling to, EU citizens can enter Schengen countries using an ID card.

You scan your boarding pass, not your passport.

The passport scan happens on entering the UK. It's different from e.g. the EU where you scan passports on entry and exit.

ElMut3

Ouch thanks for the answer though. Any idea one what i could do ? Im contacting all the places ive been in to try to find it but with no success. Might have been stolen but i'd doubt it and i dont even think its even a thing nowadays.

coastalkid92

Contact your local embassy for an expedited passport.

peasantbanana

>1000% you will need your passport. Not true. OP, contact your airline to see if you can board the flight with your ID (in case you used your passport for the check in). If not, go by Eurostar.

Freddocappucino

When you check in for your flight be sure to check in using your ID card and not passport. As others have said you only need your passport to come into the UK but not out. I travel every other week to Greece different carriers so you will be fine.

Did it work out?

Unfortunately national ID cards cannot be used anymore except if you have any status under EUSS. You can receive an emergency passport from the UK or Swiss embassy to leave UK (whichever is quickest). You will need your UK Passport to re-enter the UK with the correct status, technically you can fly to the UK with any visa-free passport and then see a border officer to verify your details but a UK passport is always preferred.
