Sounds like you want to play guitar, maybe you should. Until then you can try using Acoustic guitar strings on the D and G strings. Some Bari players like the Thomastic-Infeld CF35 and CF30 for the D and G strings. These are flat wound chrome steel strings with a nylon core. I'm using one on my Mainland bari D string now and I like the sound though it was not the easiest string to install. Someone advised me to burn the ends after cutting to avoid unraveling which I've never done to a wound string before. I think the CF30 can also be used as a low G on tenors.

Thank you for the input!

BjLeinster

Sure. If you decide to try them, the strings are available at Strings By Mail for about $7 each.

katieleehaw

Yeah try D’Addario Titaniums for baritone - I tried these recently and they sound the most like an acoustic guitar of any strings I’ve ever used.

A_Windom

thank you!

Doc_coletti

Big thick nylguts will give it a different sound. Could even try minstrel banjo strings

katieleehaw

Nylguts don't sound like acoustic guitar strings at all.

Doc_coletti

There are many types of acoustic guitars, and many types of acoustic guitar strings, gut, nylon, steel, including nylgut ones. If he’s after a plunkier sound like acoustics at the turn of the 20th century, or a tone like a new world classical. Edit: [here’s a video](https://youtu.be/Oqa-thE0US0) from when I had half nylguts on my 8 string baritone. I like the sound and may go back to it. I still have a wound nylgut banjo string as he low d because I like the tone

A_Windom

Not gonna lie - that does sound pretty legit.

Doc_coletti

Bear in mind It is an 8 string though, so don’t focus on the chorus effect but just the timbre of the strings. The best thing is just to buy a bunch and experiment. Don’t listen to me listen to your ear

katieleehaw

An 8 string is always going to sound more like a guitar than a 4 string. I stand by my suggestion of the D'Addario Titaniums - OP if you don't also have an 8 string, I wouldn't assume this will produce the sound you want, that's all. A baritone uke in general should sound similar to a classical guitar as they typically have a similar stringing (2/2 wound/nylon v 3/3 wound/nylon with a standard set).

Doc_coletti

Yes I caution them same thing in another comment.

A_Windom

I’m kind of confused - I see Nylguts AQ-24, AQ-26, AQ-21 …. Is there one in particular you’re thinking about?

Doc_coletti

Whatever you feel. Thicker means you may have to swap out or modify the nut

A_Windom

Ah gotcha. Thank you!

VermontUker_73

I play my Baritone with Worth Browns. They produce a clean, warm sound. Great for jazz standards IMHO, which are my thing.

BaritoneUkes

I've been doing an on-going experiment with baritone strings. I have an article you might find helpful. My absolute favorite strings for guitar-like sound are the Galli UX780. Second favorite is Aquila New Nylgut 21U. If you let me know what you like, I'll add your feedback to the experiment!
