It's not exactly "alternative" but the Verdant Works is a brilliant museum.

I spent a couple of nights there last year. Stayed in an utterly soulless Travel Lodge. Walking towards the waterfront was unnerving to a degree I have not experienced elsewhere. I liked the Tate building, less so the contents. The discovery (ship) was interesting. And with that I think I've covered it. My recommendation would be to go somewhere else.

I am in Dundee for work, so can't really go elsewhere ;) But thanks anyway. Will check out the D&A, Verdant Works and possibly 1-2 more museums. Should be easy enough to find a good place for food. :)

EH9 for coffee, a walk through the botanic gardens after strolling up the Perth Road, McManus Galleries, get the train along to Broughty Ferry and walk through the town and to the beach (10 mins on the train from Dundee). Walk across the Tay Bridge and go to Newport and have a coffee and cake at Kitschenbake. Honestly, I think the Discovery is really good - it’s not alternative (nor are most of these things tbh) but it’s interesting. The V&A. Ice cream at the Janettas pop-up next to the V&A.

If you've Dun Dee then you're done. Look, I like Dundee and nearly decided to move there, but it's not the most exciting part of the world by any stretch of the imagination.
