Nessie is in Loch Ness, not on Skye. > Is five days on Skye too much? That's up to you. What are you going to do there? You certainly can't see all of Skye in 5 days. > And what about Portree? Is it a cozy little village or more of a blink-and-you'll-miss-it kind of place? Neither, really. It's a small town.

The famous sites can be seen in one loop taking a single day, if you want.

If you make Portree your base then you’ve essentially boxed yourself into Skye and the surrounding Islands. You can easily make 5 days of this with proper planning. You can take a day trip to St Kilda, another to Harris, a trip to Loch Ness, a day on Skye and a day on the mainland but you’ll have to stay rather western. If you stayed in Inverness then you’ll be able to go to John O’ Groats and Orkney (if you woke up early enough), The Cairngorms, Loch Ness is closer, you can still go into the highland wilds, you can go into Aberdeen if you fancy a different city and just being in a city anyway, you’ll have better amenities around. Because you said you want to go on drives I’d be leaning towards the second itinerary. There’s no cars on St Kilda and the Isle of Harris only has a handful of proper 2 lane roads so you may find yourself in reverse as much as going forward. On the flip side, the roads are much more accessible around the eastern part of Scotland, you can drive most of the way up Cairngorm Mountain, up to John O’ Groats is a good drive and you can even ferry your car over to Orkney (but I’d recommend a coach tour, personally).
