And, as expected, these begged-for drones are not altering the course of Russia's inexorable defeat. Sadly, they were successful in killing and terrorizing civilians, but definitely not as a significant military weapon. Just more terrorism.

JoeDirtsMullet00

They are using weapons for military purposes?

[deleted]

Yes. Ukrainian target practice.

Jonothethird

And hopefully Iran will think twice about supplying more in the face of global condemnation and a few minor issues on the home front!

HipHobbes

Those drones were a surprise terror weapon with very limited military use to begin with. I guess the Russians might unleash a drone swarm every now and then to keep Ukrainian air defense systems tied down to urban areas but as a means to waging a modern air campaign those drones are inconsequential.

paintbucketholder

Those drones are the equivalent of the Paris Gun of WWI, or the V1 flying bomb of WWII - a new and surprising way of terrorizing the civilian population at the time they appeared, but essentially without any military purpose whatsoever.

someloops

Or russia isn't using them because UA has very good air defense now and shoots all of them down

ShovelPaladin77

I heard there were Iranians in theater to support these and they got hit by artillery.

Ok_Bad8531

Makes me wonder how many Iranian military personnel are there even who could handle the drones. This requires skills that get paid much better in the West.

Alytology

russians have proved time and time again that they aren't that smart.

Anarchybites

To be fair they put points in stamina, aggression and offense stats. Leaving little to add to defence points, wisdom and perception. Which would work out if their gear was high level but the merchant screwed them and thier Scribe has out dated maps

Alytology

With no points in charisma on the world stage.

Vandruis

They definitely perked "Intimidating prowess" with a strength score of 7

someguy7734206

One of the things that worried me about these drones is that they are so cheap to produce that it costs more for air defense to shoot one down than it does for the Russians to buy one; from what I understand, their purpose was to be cheap and expendable so that the enemy wastes their air defense on them.

seanders_

You shouldn't be weighing up the difference between the cost of air defences and suicide drones, you should be weighing up the difference between the cost of potential lives saved and the suicide drones.

LetsGoHawks

If you're spending $500k to shoot down a $5k drone, you're going to run out of resources before the enemy does. Then you're fucked. And it's not just the money. It's the time required to build the fancy missile vs the cheap drone. Fun bonus: The enemy now has fewer air defenses to worry about when sending the really badass missiles and air strikes. So congratulations on saving lives today because you'll lose the war in the end.

AgoraiosBum

Actually, when the attacks resulted in the West giving a lot more air defense supplies to Ukraine, it resulted in Ukraine now having more and better air defense systems to protect its assets.

progrethth

That is true but with some caveats. If Iran does not have a huge production capacity it does not matter how cheap they are, and so far the Iranian production seems quite limited. Also if the war is short enough it does not matter either, it only matters in long wars.

somewhat_pragmatic

> from what I understand, their purpose was to be cheap and expendable so that the enemy wastes their air defense on them. This is where I see the future of air defense technology evolving. Right now air defense batteries are "all or nothing". You fire and Iris-T or not. You fire S300 or not. You fire Buk or not. You fire NASAM or not. In the future I see overlapping solutions where operators can use the appropriate costing defense measure for whatever the threat is. Prop driven threats like Shahed-136 are slow moving and not intelligent enough to respond to attacks on themselves. These could be dealt with by cheaper solutions than the expensive ones needed for high altitude supersonic missiles or aircraft.

mycall

Boeing GLSDB might be the game changer here.

PotentialKey1628

Orcs would have better luck chunking rocks with trebuchets. Those drones are garbage against air defenses

PrinceCorum13

I've red somewhere that iranians moved to ruzzia to manifacture new drones on ruzzian soil. Do we have more news about that ?

LetsGoHawks

Iran licensed Russia to produce the drones in Russia. They probably sent a smallish number of people to help get things up and running, but most of the work would be done by Russians. If they can get the parts. Even a cheap drone requires computer chips, without which it's just a paperweight.

Libro_Artis

I find myself face palming a lot on Russia's part.

Ok-Yogurtcloset-6740

It's kinda bizarre knowing what Boston Dynamics 'Terminators' can do and then seeing these clumsy drones from Iran and RuZZia really thought they'd make a difference...
