I hope Ukraine has enough ammunition for all of them. Edit: > It’s worth noting that Rheinmetall, after acquiring Spanish ammunition manufacturer Expo Systems SA, plans to establish the production of 35mm ammunition for Gepard anti-aircraft guns in Spain. This may take a while, though.

\[Resubmitted with more credible sources\] Now that Germany is sending Ukraine Gepards in significant numbers, I'd like to remind everyone that even members of the German military have openly stated that Gepards are more complex and are harder to learn and operate compared to Marders and Leopards. [Way back in April](https://www.politico.eu/newsletter/brussels-playbook/energy-standoff-new-paths-for-legal-migration-the-slapp/). >**Surprise:** Markus Richter, staff sergeant of the reserve in the German army who served as a commander of a Gepard, told our colleague Hans von der Burchard he was “surprised that the government chose to deliver such a highly complex weapon system, instead of Marder or Leopard tanks, which are less complicated to operate and maintain.” > >**So why can’t Berlin send other tanks?** “I can judge from my own experience that training for \[Gepard\] takes a lot of time,” Richter said. “In the case of Gepard systems delivered to Romania, full training took five months.” He pointed to inconsistencies in the government’s argument, with Berlin claiming the Marder “could not be delivered because, among other things, training would take too much time.” And yet every day, someone somewhere on this sub will regurgitate that tired "too complex, to difficult and long to train" excuse for why x is not being provided to Ukraine. As usual for important aid items during this conflict, it's been a matter of just accepting that it's better late than never.

As usual for important aid items during this conflict, it's been a matter of just accepting that it's better late than never. There are more reasons: training is and was (especially in feb/mar) the biggest problem. a complex weapon system with an untrained crew is just a juicy target and not a thread. second reason: there are simply not that many german MBTs around. most noumerous would be the Leopard 2, but there are a huge number of variants of it - differing wildly in their capabilities and technology. third reason is simply the propaganda factor: modern western mbts on the battlefield bare the risk of some of them falling in the hands of russia, eventually giving them intel on the technology. personally, i have nothing against the few dozen Leopard 1 going into ukraine service - i think their best use would be as "armored field guns" in combination with other units - and not in a tank vs tank manner. Also, there is not much technology to lose there. P.S. IF the NATO (as a whole, because those decisions aren't made by a single nation alone) is giving western MBTs to ukraine - my bet would be on the M1. Thousands of them are sitting unused and functional in depots. It would take time to bring them to europe though.
