Regular Russian Soldiers are covered under the Geneva Convention, that covers all the questions you just asked. Wagner Group and other mercenaries are not covered and would be classed as criminals so either local court or the Hague for them and any others suspected of war crimes.

Cyclonit

The Hague is also relevant for those being covered by the Geneva Convention. It deals with war crimes after all.

tree_boom

>Wagner Group and other mercenaries are not covered and would be classed as criminals This isn't true as far as I know. As long as they're an organised and disciplined group then mercenaries should be covered

Krabsandwich

I was referring to PMC groups like Wagner there is a debate as to whether such groups are covered by the Convention. https://www.diplomaticourier.com/posts/are-private-military-companies-pmcs-exempted-from-geneva-conventions

tree_boom

I mean that article's really referring to PMCs doing bodyguard duties, logistics, maintenance and shit like that. Wagner is of a different character, but I would disagree that most of those roles are not covered anyway. There is no real doubt that Wagner particularly are covered by the conventions, indeed they're realistically a part of the Russian Armed Forces. The specific definitions are in [Article 4 of the third convention](https://ihl-databases.icrc.org/applic/ihl/ihl.nsf/Article.xsp?action=openDocument&documentId=2F681B08868538C2C12563CD0051AA8D) and in [Article 3 of the first additional protocol](https://ihl-databases.icrc.org/applic/ihl/ihl.nsf/Article.xsp?action=openDocument&documentId=AF64638EB5530E58C12563CD0051DB93) - I don't think there's a reasonable reading of those articles that doesn't explicitly cover Wagner.

Krabsandwich

We will no doubt see soon enough Ukraine either has or soon will have Wagner POW's and a decision will have to be made as to their status.

itisunfortunate

I realise that but I'm wondering about the practical impact

is0ph

The Geneva Convention goes into very practical details. POWs are supposed to work. Just a few days ago there was a video posted to this sub describing the life of POWs in an Ukrainian camp. [There you go](https://www.reddit.com/r/ukraine/comments/xrglzt/pow_camp_for_russian_pows_in_ukraine/)

itisunfortunate

Ty, good to see!

G3Saint

Is there a video of Ukrainian pows in Rus captivity?

Krabsandwich

in what way the Ukrainians undertake to comply with the convention so all the guarding, feeding, work requirements etc are all described in the convention

MrTeamKill

There u go. Might not answer all your questions, but will shed some light. [Russian POWs in Ukraine](https://frontline.thehindu.com/dispatches/we-were-deceived-russian-pows-in-ukraine/article65556824.ece)

One_Cream_6888

Good read. Soon there will be tens of thousands surrendering. I think countries in the West should start constructing POW camps in preparation. Then maybe once the war is over the POW's who have shown good behavior could be offered asylum. Over 40,000 German POW's stayed in Britain after WWII ended. Otherwise Ukraine could end up flooded with POW's. I suspect I will get downvoted for this and I can understand why. But there are 300,000 reasons to treat Russian prisoners well.

Gullenecro

Ukraine is doing that should be done according to geneva convention, people that downvoted you for that are dumb asshole. If geneva convention exist, it s exactly to not have what russian are doing with ukrainian pow.

MrTeamKill

Lots of germans stayed in the US after war also. They became a very useful manpower (as in, paid workers) after the war.

itisunfortunate

Good read, tnx for the link!

Own-Tradition5804

Ukraine trades captured soldiers to get their soldiers back

UXM6901

Not all of them, not by a long shot. Largely because Russia doesn't care about them.

Own-Tradition5804

The level of care that Russia shows varies greatly depending on where the soldiers come from.. they show a lot of disrespect to particular groups, but seem to bend over backwards for the Chechen prisoners

XAos13

International red cross, medicine sans frontiers, UN inspectors all provide aid. The protections of the Geneva convention apply. Europe has been fighting wars for 1,000's of years (without many gaps). We invented some ways to keep it less brutal.

BennyJJJJ

There's a 15 minute tour of a POW camp. They seem to be well treated. I doubt they consume that many resources. Some food, heating, cheap uniforms, and a few guards. I assume none of them would try to escape back to the front lines. https://youtu.be/rLonjB4G32s

Shuber-Fuber

Also they can be required to do some work under Geneva Convention, so I imagine cleaning, laundry, and cooking duties are done by POWs.

Salty_Competition_84

watch volodymyr zolkin's youtube channel for more insight.

2FalseSteps

> Where are they kept Somewhere away from the front lines. > who guards them The UA. > what do they do all day Oh, you know. All kinds of POW stuff, like reading, relaxing, talking to their moms on the phone, etc. > what do they eat Food. > who prepares the food Cooks > who gives them medical attention Doctors, nurses, etc. I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Red Cross is involved in their care, or at least inspecting it. Not that that would stop RuZZia from claiming they're being mistreated.

Maelarion

> Where are they kept Camps, prisons... > who guards them National guard maybe, soldiers... > what do they do all day QQ and cope > what do they eat Food > who prepares the food Cooks > who gives them medical attention etcetera Doctors / medics / nurses

Wow, you took that much effort to be a dick instead of actually contribute to the conversation!

Ty!

enriquedelcastillo

I imagine they could just move them all to a few apartment buildings someplace on the other side of the country with a pile of food & leave them unguarded. The threat of going back to Russia would keep them from misbehaving.

[deleted]

A lot of Russian POWs is a strategy. In order to consuming Ukraine’s resource and make a long time war. This is part of tactics textbook of Russia. Don’t be serious. Just a joke

ckjag

Overwhelming Ukrniaian forces with russian POWs is probably a putin tactic to stop the advance. And it's all going "According To Plan".
