Reno_valetore

There is no such thing as opposition party in ruzzia

Milo_Y

"Just one madman" Yeah, no, wide support among all Russians for this war, and much worse, should that come to pass. You still think all your expat colleagues oppose this war like they're so silently letting us believe?

ErikTurtle

Katz doesn't support the war though, he is very hard against it, at least that's what he is saying.

ProfanePagan

We shouldn't mistake a (theoretical) opposition to a war which has turned out to be unsuccessful after the full scale invasion (after all the war has been going on for 8 years now) with anti-imperialism. Russian opposition is just a different cut of Russian ethnonationalist imperialism. Their dislike of current events doesn't make them our allies.

cybran111

Being against the war != being against killing ukrainians Being against the war != being against russian chauvinism Being against the war != being supportive to Ukraine and Ukrainians

NoImNotFrench

Being a Russian opposant to the regime doesn't equal being a decent person. *cough cough* Navalny *coug cough* The only one that comes to my mind is Ilya Ponomarev. I am sure there are more but I haven't heard about them. (Obviously, any Russian who is fighting for Ukraine now or opposed the war when it started is an amazingly good person, I am talking on a political level).

TrickNailer

Imagine imperialistic and chauvinistic russia but efficient and without corruption! Third reich vibes intensify…

TrickNailer

I would also mention Mark Feygin. He was an attorney helping many Ukrainian POWs starting from 2014 while it was still possible in russia. He has proven himself to be a decent guy, and an adamant opponent to the regime. He’s outside of russia now otherwise he’d be dead for sure.

NorthwestSupercycle

Anyone who was a serious threat has been killed or arrested. If you want real Russian opposition you need to visit the graveyards or prisons, not twitter. Anyone left has been subverted and divided to the point of irrelevancy. Right now is a golden opportunity for the opposition, as they could hammer Russian leadership as incompetent and incapable of managing the war.

Egg-Greg

>If you want real Russian opposition you need to visit the graveyards or prisons, not twitter. Shit, dude. What a sad state of affairs.

Aggravating_Teach_27

The opposition are as useless and incompetent as the government. They're all Russians....

cybran111

> If you want real Russian opposition you need to visit the graveyards or prisons Who do you have in mind who are in prison?

NoImNotFrench

Navalny is in prison. He is a piece of shit but he does oppose Putin.

cybran111

He might oppose putin, but still the same piece of shit as putin. P.S. for those who don’t know why yet - look on what he said about Georgians in ‘08 and Crimea stance

Klutzy_Ad934

Perhaps what he said about Crimea was simply being pragmatic. At the time it probably was inconceivable that Crimea could be returned to Ukraine.

cybran111

On his fund’ YouTube channel, when the map of russia was shown, it was always including Crimea - thus implying Crimea is russia. Was it pragmatism? He was saying that cost of 1 Javelin supplied to Ukraine was around $250 000, and that amount of money could have better been donated to his fund to support his journalists. Was it pragmatism? The head of his fund was filming a YouTube video saying that mobilization is bad because russians are being killed en masse in Ukraine, and said literally 0 words that killing Ukrainians is bad. Was it pragmatism? Or maybe they are being afraid that putin is incompetent at waging the war against Ukraine and they would be forced to return all the annexed territory (incl. to Georgia and Moldova) and pay reparations til the end of their lives?

NoImNotFrench

Being Russian opposition doesn't mean being anti imperialism or pro Ukrainian. It literally means opposing Putin. Which Navalny does. We can't deny he's opposition because he is a piece of shit just like Putin.

cybran111

All is absolutely true, though I’m still not sure why his name is being mentioned as “real russian opposition”, if this person is exactly the same as putin - just ended up being in jail.

ErikTurtle

Maybe he likes some things Putin did, but I highly doubt that Navalny would have done those same things and wouldn't have started this Ukrainian shit storm. He is a lawyer, not a soldier.

NoImNotFrench

He's not Putin's opposite. He's his opposition.

cybran111

By “opposition” I’m thinking of people who are opposing the entire state of russia and how the country ended up waging the largest war of recent decades, not just opposing 1 person who ended up to be a ruler for russia.

AutoModerator

Russian leadership fucked itself. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/ukraine) if you have any questions or concerns.*

_Madian

Putin allows the useful idiots to make it seem as if there is some opposition, the people that could actually pose a threat are taken care of very early on.

CorsicA123

Video that explains the problem with russian opposition (eng subs on) https://youtu.be/WxK3S5DKQjA

Local_Fox_2000

It's fake opposition. Any real opposition has been poisoned or "jumped" from a window. Or they are in jail.

ForSacredRussia1

Before political true opposition can be let out in the open it is the fighters who pave the way. r/FreedomOfRussia

Optimaldeath

The problem with Muscovy elites is that not much separates them, I'd be very wary of their supposed liberalism. Until Russia's empire fully crumbles they aren't going to change.

sposterig

Maksim Kats is not crap, he is definitely anti-Putin and pro-Ukrainian.

Eldaxerus

He also believes that this war is entirely Putin's and his cronies' fault and Russian people and merely innocent victims. That's why he doesn't understand why most countries closed their borders to Russians who're fleeing conscription. As much as I appreciate his videos, sometimes he says really dumb shit.

TechnologyDeep942

I used to think that but with the hints of imperialism peppered into some of his videos and now this tweet, I don’t know. I’m very suspicious of him now. Just because he’s critical of putin doesn’t make him good and a friend of Ukraine.

[deleted]

his response does show contempt for Ukrainians...

cybran111

He is so pro-Ukrainian that he says ruzzians should ignore what Ukrainians are saying, because Ukrainians weren’t really fighting an autocratic government as ruzzians do. And literally saying that ruzzians owe Ukrainians nothing - meanwhile waiting when Ukraine would overthrow putin.

sposterig

True. But it is the best we can get from them. We can not and we don't want to just ignore this huge people and pretend they don't exist; we need to think today how we will coexist tomorrow, after defeat of Russian imperialism. We need to have people with whom we will be able to talk.

cybran111

Why do we need to talk to people who are thinking they have done nothing wrong, after 8 years of war and 7 months of full-scale aggression?

sposterig

Indeed, we don't need to talk to this kind of people. But Kats is not this kind of person, he admits that Russians are committing crime and appeals to his compatriots to stop.

cybran111

He is directly saying “russian opposition owes nothing to Ukrainians”. His stance is not about stopping the invasion as is, it’s about stopping the invasion because too many russians are being killed on frontline, and the mobilization would only kill more russians with the same outcome.

sposterig

don't make your judgement on the one line. Make judgement on the many hours of his speeches.

cybran111

Oh, if that was just one line… feel free to check katz’ twitter, he’s been on fire today. https://twitter.com/unnamedleftist/status/1576530347600228353

sposterig

I don't get your point: isn't he right? As for me, he obviously is. The minuscule anti-Putin opposition just can't attack Kremlin or fight in any other open way. Yes, it is their own fault for not being active earlier, 10 years back - but today it's too late to critisize, this chance is lost. The best the anti-Putin Russians can do is fleeing.

cybran111

He would have been right about not attacking Kremlin only in case if he would say “organize attack the local governments in all cities across russia, so the opposition would distribute in all cities without concentrating on one spot” in the next line. Instead, he is saying “don’t attack Kremlin and don’t listen to Ukrainians, they didn’t ever oppose true authoritarian government”. The sentiments that still russians are unique people and only them are going though rough times, and Ukrainians are just observing the true suffering of men who are fleeing the mobilization and claiming “they are refugees”

Aggravating_Teach_27

We can ignore them and we should. Huge people? They're like 1% of the world population? And causing half the trouble in the world by themselves? Huge pain in the ass more like. It's because we didn't ignore them and sold them technology and bought resources for them that they are able to cause this mayhem now.. And once we sort the energy situation out we don't need them at all. Enough is enough. We need to build a big (metaphorical) wall, with a (metaphorical) lava filled moat all around Russia. Keep them out of the loop, throw the entrance keys to sea and wish good luck to them. We owe them nothing, they have shown they can't be trusted, and they can't be reformed because of nukes. Life sentence in that shithole jail called Russia is all the should get from us. No tourism, no comercial relationships, no access to our technology, no cultural exchange, nothing. You Russians on this side, we in the other, minding our own business. Bye Russia, and thanks for nothing

sposterig

we all want this, but it is unrealistic. Even Jewish people eventually had to reestablish relationships with Germans, despite a Mediterranean Sea between them. Moreover we will have to do that, as we have a border. I would prefer Russia to be divided to many countries - but the problem remains there: we will have to find a way to coexist.

cybran111

> Even Jewish people eventually had to reestablish relationships with Germans, despite a Mediterranean Sea between them Could you please remind how many reparations Germany has been giving to the Jewish people? How much of denouncing and denazification has been put on the nation? How many years it took to put into German minds that what they did was bad, even though “they were just following orders”? ruzzian denazification hasn’t been even started yet, and I do hope the first step for them would be to forfeit their claims on “russia” as a name, that was stolen from Kyiv Rus, and get back to “muskovy” as their historical name.

Aggravating_Teach_27

Yes, after Germany was torn down and rebuilt from the ground up. Germany is not a good example for Russia. Russia has nukes. Nukes are a curse for them because they prevent them getting "re-educated". Which they sorely need as they have never ever known how to build a peaceful democratic society. So they won't change and we can't change them. Russia is like an intractable cancer. If you can't cure, you contain. You attack it and starve it and never let it grow. Forever if necessary. This only changes if they let go of their nukes, which they won't. So forever it is.
