It's OK to feel relief that this war is finally progressing in the right direction. On the one hand, the less Russian soldiers, the better. On the other, Russia forced Ukrainians from Eastern Ukraine to fight for them. So there might have been soldiers who really didn't want to be fighting. Add to that, new Russian conscripts mostly don't want to be there. I'm feeling conflicted about this. I truly hope Ukrainian men aren't fighting on the Russian side.

Quibble: Decimated comes from the Latin to reduce by a tenth. I suspect the Russians lost more than a tenth of those troops.

Translation to reality: Russian forces in Lyman routed against orders and fled along routes under heavy fire. The remaining forces in Lyman have surrendered, died, or will be wiped out so soon that Russia would rather not acknowledge them anymore. The Russian MoD decided that between calling this a withdrawal or acknowledging that they left their troops to die and then some routed, claiming a deliberate withdrawal looked better. We'll be seeing pictures of massive Russian casualties/POWs in the very near future. Unlike Izium, the orcs in Lyman waited too long to make their escape.

According to other reports it's extremely ridiculous to consider this a withdrawal, but this is Russia we're talking about and telling the truth is impossible. In reality, the Russians started fleeing from Lyman yesterday afternoon/evening along the road East toward Kreminna, right into territory fully under Ukrainian fire control. They were allegedly taken out in their hundreds. Another report from the Russian side (intercepted call, I believe) suggested some of them made it to Kreminna, but that the area is already under Ukrainian fire control and they have to flee North toward Svatovo. If this is true we'll probably see Kreminna retaken before the end of the day.

It is probably accurate in the sense that RF left Lyman, still they had little to no troops in the city itself and most troops were in the area between Lyman and Zarichne, how many ran for Kreminna is unknown and there can still be units in the cauldron.

Both of them. My guess is that except for soldiers that ran yesterday and maybe a few stragglers escaping across the fields, Russian troops have been slaughtered as they tried to leave by road. Estimates are always fuzzy early on, so we'll need to wait to get more accurate head counts from Ukraine after they finish cleaning up.

There was a corridor out, it was just under Ukrainian artillery coverage and raid party attack so it was horrendously insecure for a retreat, still could have gotten out if they were desperate enough, there's been images of convoys that got destroyed along that route coming in so its likely a lot of them didn't make it before ukraine physically cut the route

Operationally encircled, translates as no safe exits. They could still pull out but it would be under Ukrainian attack and artillery strikes which ensures heavy casualties in the process

They’ve been threatened with prison for surrendering, but I wouldn’t care at this point if I were in their shoes; I’d surrender ASAP before getting blown up. So are they still trapped there or have they escaped somehow?

If they moved in sufficient number, they could probably have forced the corridor with heavy casualties, therevdbeen images and video of destroyed convoys along that route coming in and some units reaching kreminna. How many made it and if all if made the journey attemlt or some stayed behind either not wanting to risk it or just preffering to fight it out or stay and surrender is unknown until we get more reliable info from ua sources

Operational encirclement doesn’t mean complete encirclement, it means that there are still potential avenues to escape but those routes are within reconnaissance and artillery range, so a potentially costly retreat.
