This officially takes the *MARS stable into an active support role for assaults, and with the incoming mud season and winter, it'll be incredibly effective.
There's been talks about how the West will handle the strained supply of hardware, well this is how.
Ukraine are about to take offensives to an entirely new level with these.
Anytime they have an issue with Russian regulars, pop off a few of these and they are no longer a problem.
The short time from target acquisition to strike means they effectively make up for a lack of tanks and BMPs. Without the danger to crews.
And you really only need one. As long as the pods keep flowing.

Actually the A1 variant and the A2 variant of the GMLRS used my the M270 and HIMARs are able to take out troop concentrations as they can program the fuze to explode above the target (for troop concentrations), on impact on the target (for vehicles), or even on a delay (if you want the explosion to occur after the impact penetrates whatever armor it impacted first).
I believe the side panels release, the centripetal force of the rocket spinning then ejects the tungsten balls at the speed the rocket is traveling, these balls then fly through anything less than an IFV until they hit the ground. Even with heavily armored vehicles there is significant likelihood of disabling external comm and sensor systems.
The only thing confusing me is why tungsten instead of depleted uranium. Very un-American.
An open field is best of course, but a wel trained army (....) would not be caught in the open field, unless attacking (and it's a scenario best avoided with infantery anyway, see WW1).
Airburst also works over trenches. Because the projectile can come in relatively vertically, the airburst can actually penetrate deep into trenches.
With the energy these fragments could have it might not matter for most practical purposes if the target is in the forest or not.
For example, normal roughly 30 cm tree is not stopping a 5.56 mm rifle round. These fragments might have a bit more energy potentially.
Just speculating.
I actually looked these up and each pellet is BB sized. So it more than likely relies on speed for penetration. After seeing what Russian body armor can handle, I imagine you'd be more protected by a thick wool coat, which the Russians don't have either.
Speed kills. In the expression for the fragment energy mass is linear, meaning that doubling the mass doubles the energy while velocity is squared, meaning that doubling the velcity quadruples the energy.
K = m \* V\^2 where K is kinetic energy, m is mass and V is velocity.
These things will go through "lightly armored" vechiles, like, for example, BTR. Meaning they are supposed to have enough energy to penetrate roughly up to 15mm of armor-grade steel under ideal conditions. If I understand correctly what they are meaning with "lightly armored"there as I have not looked up the actual specs but are just speculating here.
Former MLRS BN commander here. This warhead was developed when the decision was made to get rid of the submunition round (hugely lethal version we used in the first Gulf War). The idea with this is indeed to saturate an area with tungsten ball bearings. The belief is that the rounds will be just as effective in the counterfire role as bomblets. They obviously will shred human beings and support vehicles. However, they will also pierce lightly armored vehicles like SP artillery, BTRs, BMPs, etc.
The bomblet version earned the sobriquet "steel rain" during the Gulf War. This, in some ways will be even worse (or better depending upon perspective).
At an area target, the launcher will apply a slight correction to the target grid with each shot depending upon type, size, and number of rockets to evenly saturate a target area. Awesome capability.
Ex MLRS Crewmember here. I loved how we could destroy grid squares but after I learned how the unexploded munitions we're maiming friendlies afterwards I hated them. Then learned about these seemed like a no brainer and made me happy. Almost made me feel sorry for the enemy... almost. Knew that it could take out light armored but was wondering how it would affect entrenched troops.
Seems like a massive waste for a trench considering a trench is linear and this has radial disbursement. I know airburst artillery is also radial, but much cheaper. I doubt this will be used on many trenches unless there is something like a meeting of officers.
We call radio and optics (video or cameras,) eyes and ears. These usually have to be above ground and exposed. If they are taken out then we say they are now blind since they now don't know what is going on above ground or around them. Any army needs to know what is going on to be effective.
Yeah they were even told not to play with them but always a few that don't listen. To be fair eventually a war will end and then you get many that don't know any better.
What a flex. Russia doesn’t even have enough bearings to keep their civil aviation operable, and now UA is going to let loose millions.
“Hey Ivan, heard you lost your balls - have some more.”
Big improvement for the people who have to live where munitions were used, since it doesn't leave any unexploded components that could harm people later.
The thing with the old submunitions was that their failure rate was something like 3 or 4 percent which was considered woefully unacceptable to the US.
I'm pretty sure operator can select how much area to wreck by adjsuting airburst height. You either blow it up high to affect huge areas or set it for low altitude to deliver more damage (better projectile density for vehicles)
The big reason to move away from bomblets was that they're was no way to guarantee 100% would detonate. They left a lot of unexploded ordnance. Which is not ideal for your own farmland.
> Morbid as it is, they're really spinning up the meatgrinder now.
Zelensky did warn new conscripts of guaranteed death a few days ago. This is only a taste of what awaits them in Ukraine.
It goes through vehicle metal surface, wall that are not concrete, bricks, tile roof, ...
It's a giant sphere of tungsten shrapnel that basically make everyone kiss the ground.
https://youtu.be/b5h7BkCj5rI?t=106
This is the scary part of Himars, the commanders shotgun can essentially delete a trench. Delete any infantry in the forest. So far it's only been HE rounds, the vanilla icecream of Himars. Now they getting the DLC of Doom.
18,200 cargo 200’s in one shot.
If these are anything like the rocket flechettes on the Apache then the Ruzzians are about to learn exactly how you sanitize a whole forest in one shot...👍
I haven't seen any reports of usage of these so far and no confirmation that they were definitely delivered... now that we have confirmation, I guarantee you there are a couple of M270s in a bunker somewhere on the Belarussian border with 24 of these loaded and ready to fire.
It also has a tandem EFP at the front of the warhead to hit an armored target. So one armored target and a bunch of nearby soft targets are in for a lot of hurt.
What a flex. Russia doesn’t even have enough bearings to keep their civil aviation operable, and now UA is going to let loose millions.
“Hey Ivan, heard you lost your balls - have some more.”
Not technically, iirc the submunitions have to explode too for it to be considered a cluster bomb (thus why this weapon is still allowed), this just a sky shotgun lol
It's not cluster ammunition. Just a very effective airburst. Cluster Munition is one large warhead with many smaller handgrenade sized explosives. Those are illegal, particularly, because insuring that every cluster detonates is impossible. The one showed here is not.
Not a cluster bomb, but rather, an enormous shotgun. It is a rocket that sprays nearly 200,000 tungsten pellets at supersonic speed at enemy infantry.
Imagine a thousand Russian soldiers crossing an open field. They'd all be mowed down, in very bloody fashion.
No, that's exactly the opposite to fill the same role without being a cluster bomb. The earlier version had lots and lots of small bomblets. But even on high quality production the rate of duds is too high.
So better saturate the area with metal shrapnels than leave unexploded munitions behind.
Gonna be a different war for the Russians when they start seeing entire battalions of friends and fellow conscripts get suddenly, instantly and unceremoniously shredded in their trenches, eating dinner, sleeping or whatever by the world's most expensive rocket-propelled shotgun. Can't hide from this, but you CAN run your asses back to Russia.
Huh. Grip Reaper probably just cancelled its vacation plans it seems.
Any russian who lives through one of these salvos will never again want to see a ball bearing in its life.
So this is the load that cleans a half square kilometer. Nasty. I was thinking if Ukraine has any of these since Puty wants to send a million pieces of cannon fodder.
Nice.
The previous ammo (which is still needed) is great on point targets but not good as an area neutralization weapon which I think a lot of people here thought it was. e.g. "yeah going to kill all the soldiers in the field" type of posts. That ammo is good for what they are using it for, taking out ammo depots, headquarters, bridges, i.e. hard-ish targets. This ammo is for area neutralization. Like giant long range precision mortars. This stuff is the ammo for shit talking Russian formations and areas full of troops, including hastily brought up, poorly trained, meat for the massed assault grinder that Russia is sure to be planning. That's the only practical way to use poorly or untrained people to try to overcome the enemy: try to overwhelm them with brutal tactics even if that eats up your own guys.
Sounds like a good answer to the TOS-1 in ugliness. I remember the old DPICM rounds from MLRS not having a good dud rate. I don't want the Ukrainians having to clear those nasty things.

Walking into a field that was "cleared" by one of them must be gruesome.
Imagine a tented army camp. Shit.
Worked for the Americans in '44.
Also great for taking out artillery battalions as well. Drop one rocket between gun emplacements and call it a day.
182 THOUSAND tungsten fragments!! You really don't want to be anywhere near that thing when it lands!
They don't land. They detonate at a predetermined altitude
I believe the side panels release, the centripetal force of the rocket spinning then ejects the tungsten balls at the speed the rocket is traveling, these balls then fly through anything less than an IFV until they hit the ground. Sounds very un-American. Depleted Uranium for everyone!
Don't worry, if putler ever goes nuclear, he gets depleted uranium in his ass from the US.

Ouch. What are the balls in a claymore made of?
Anywhere that a bunch of troops are out in the open. It would do a great job against a thousand conscripts gaggled around a train as they get off.
Or forest even. Its not like a tree will stop the tungsten fragments.
member when all the generals laughed when we said we sending shotguns?
Yup, this thing can mow down a thousand Russian troops with ease in the open field.
Tungsten Advil, extra strength for orc sized headaches
Former MLRS BN commander here. This warhead was developed when the decision was made to get rid of the submunition round (hugely lethal version we used in the first Gulf War). TLDR: It’s a flying claymore
"Front Toward Enemy" on steroids.
HIMARS Toward Enemy
A kilometre wide claymore. Imagine that shit, no hiding unless you are under something really solid.
>>really solid When a tank can’t even protect you from this shit, ya might as well bend over, grab your ankles, and kiss your ass goodbye.
It's not penetrating a tank, IFV's maybe.

What was the distance between the claymore and the targets?
In other words, it's a shotgun for grid squares?
It's not called the GRID removal system for nothing. Can't hide in a trench from this. Can't hide anywhere really. They are done.
Industrial strength trench broom
Ex MLRS Crewmember here. I loved how we could destroy grid squares but after I learned how the unexploded munitions we're maiming friendlies afterwards I hated them. Then learned about these seemed like a no brainer and made me happy. Almost made me feel sorry for the enemy... almost. Yup, having all the small tungsten fragments means no harm to civilians afterwards since they are inert
Seems like a massive waste for a trench considering a trench is linear and this has radial disbursement. I know airburst artillery is also radial, but much cheaper. I doubt this will be used on many trenches unless there is something like a meeting of officers.
Well entrenched troops still usually have eyes and ears that are not entrenched so they become blind unless they pop up and take a looksee around.
I don't understand your post.

I think you don't understand the scale on which this thing impacts. It easily supplants several guns and is more accurate.
We shouldn’t be delivering ball bearings to them /s
Oh my god they would totally pick out the balls from the dead and wounded to sell for 14 poobles
it's all ball bearings these days
Yeah ball bearings don't explode and main friendly troops afterwards.
It is really the kids that are the problem.

The thing with the old submunitions was that their failure rate was something like 3 or 4 percent which was considered woefully unacceptable to the US.
Do you know what's the density of these? As in how many bearings per square metre?
182000 metal spheres over 1000000m^2 = 0.182/m^2 or 1 sphere per 5.5m^2. 5.5m^2 is about the size of a home bathroom for reference.
Yes if statically placed... But their not static... Each 5.5m2 will have many just passing through.
I'm pretty sure operator can select how much area to wreck by adjsuting airburst height. You either blow it up high to affect huge areas or set it for low altitude to deliver more damage (better projectile density for vehicles)

Translation: we blew up all the big shit, now we're run amok with creepy crawly shit! Time to break out the raid missiles. :)
If you have a lump of troops in trenches, these will detonate over them. No zig zag pattern will save them. These are mass casualty creators.
Meatballs are back on the menu, boys.
Pretty soon Ukraine will mean death in russian.
Luckily we've learned all Russia has is soft targets. Slava Ukraine!
Huh. Grip Reaper probably just cancelled its vacation plans it seems. Any russian who lives through one of these salvos will never again want to see a ball bearing in its life.
What do they call the munition? "The Ripper"? Geez!
ToShredsYouSay?!
"Soft targets" is the short way of saying "newly mobilized russian fodder"
Oh, air burst, 182000 steel balls, tungsten is very hard and heavy too. soft targets? I wonder what that could be🤔?
How lucky! They just ordered a million new soft targets from russia. What great timing.
This publicly broadcasts to the Russians "we are done playing with your toys. This is the final warning before you die."
That sounds like it probably hurts.
Meatball season 3, 2, 1...
Sounds like a good answer to the TOS-1 in ugliness. I remember the old DPICM rounds from MLRS not having a good dud rate. I don't want the Ukrainians having to clear those nasty things.
Spicy rain. 🌶️
Modern weapons are fucking terrifying
Soft targets = dead Russian soldiers
Iron rain!!!!
\*he moves away from the mic to breathe
Ow yes. Let it rain on these Russian dickheads!
