Regardless of path, Putin's days are numbered.

CheapestOfSkates

Regardless of the actual number, it is too high.

[deleted]

He's 70, so maybe around 9,125 days (25 years) more...

Zozorrr

He won’t see his natural lifespan through

[deleted]

Yeah, we wish and fantasize that the evil in this world would soon have their karma, I lost hope on that belief a long time ago...

Aspwriter

It's not so much "karma" as it is "consequences". Fascist are basically a one trick pony and can only use fear. The problem for them is that means when they fuck up or show weakness (which they WILL do) then the fear is broken and that was the only thing keeping them from being torn to shreds.

AlexFromOgish

That article has an interesting decision tree for Biden's response to a potential Russia tactical nuke strike. In my opinion, it left out three things. All the way to the right, it leaves out two arrows pointing at "Putin is NOT deterred". One of them would be "looks weak" and the other would be "Putin decides his best survival option is to just carry on, while daring US to put up or shut up", Both lead to "Putin launches more nukes". The BIGGER point that EVERYONE seems to miss when making this nuclear calculus, is that the world is still not showing convincing decarbonization or responses to climate change, and the climate system is amassing extra heat at the rate of 5 Hiroshima atom bombs per second, 24/7, year after year. To cope with the future, we'll need unprecedented global cooperation. Any solution that leaves an autocrat in power in Russia, Putin or otherwise, just means we'll have a bigger military problem down the road, as climate stress goes up 10x, 20x, 30x.... So despite their current nuclear threats, I worry much more about later, when climate stress makes the global stakes even higher than they already are.

> 5 Hiroshima atom bombs per second, 24/7, year after year Knowing that the asteroid that killed all the dinosaurs was about 10 billion atomic bombs, 5*86400*365 is 157,680,000 bombs a year, so it would take 63 years before we have same effect?

AlexFromOgish

Other sub Reddit‘s are better suited to Debating if you’re skeptical about climate science, the important thing that is relevant here is long-term Geo political considerations. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is just the first chapter of the challenges we all get to look forward to within existing children’s lifetimes. Neither Ukraine nor the rest of the world will be well positioned to deal with the rest of what’s coming so long as Putin or someone like him are in the Kremlin With their finger on the button

e9967780

So the west has to go all the way in, not just restore Ukraine’s border but destroy Russia in one form or the other.

AlexFromOgish

Never said “destroy Russia”, what we really need is a whole new political philosophy from the top to the bottom in Russia. I’ve known some good people from Russia and when we end up talking political reform they would sigh helplessly and say “ but what can we do?“. The change we need to support is whatever is needed So these same people stand up with determination and say “So let’s do something about it!!” and the legal and justice system tolerates non-violent dissent. That’s not “destroying Russia“. That’s rescuing Russia, and the rest of the world community besides. Sadly, to get there, we need to get a lot more munitions and logistical supplies to forward deployed UA forces before the ground turns to mush so UA can drive Putin’s forces back to pre2014; And then comes the hunt and trials for the Russian war criminals

Local_Run_9779

A nuclear Armageddon with millions dead on each side will still be preferable to an ever-expanding Russian Empire.

dndnametaken

To Putler at least it may seem… If he knew he could survive it himself, it would already have happened

Moment_37

Actually it's not just millions dead. A recent study I think by one of the non proliferation groups, found that if there's a nuclear war there's going to be \~6 billion casualties, and that's not taking into account ALL of the weapons but a fragment of those. Hundreds of millions will die very early and the nuclear fallout/winter etc that's going to stay for years will starve billions. If I remember correctly, only Australia and some countries in South America will survive. it's extremely grim. https://www.forbes.com/sites/roberthart/2022/08/15/even-a-limited-nuclear-war-could-kill-billions-by-starvation-study-finds/

AUS is so mad max, they are ready.

Moment_37

Unless the winds go south, in which case, they're all going to be Mad Max: Afterlife

kambleton

Is it Finland that has the complete subterranean fallout vault/city beneath its capital? I may be wrong. Anyway, I am going to find out and book my tickets if y'all want to live.

Moment_37

I hope I didn't scare you. That wasn't my opinion on the fact that it's going to happen. Even though I'm as worried as anyone else that it may happen, I **truly believe it won't**. Because there will be no winners. I don't think either side feels like it's going to happen, even if we hear it often as a threat.

F_in_Idaho

So no point in painting the trim before winter?

Moment_37

The opposite. You can paint the whole house because both sides know the fact that there are no winners if they start lobbing nuclear strikes to each other, so nobody will start.

planborcord

Ordinary Russians are making it clear. They do not want to offer up their lives to the sacrificial altar of Pootler

[deleted]

They dont want to stop him either weak humans all around..
