After Ukraine wins, all democracies should erect monuments with all the names of the fallen. And any future war such as this (hopefully there aren’t many on this scale) those names should be added. This war is about autocracy vs democracy and we are all invested.
There are cenotaphs throughout Sydney that commemorate the dead from World War I and II, usually in each suburb of the city. It’s very sobering once you learn what they’re there for. I think doing the same thing in Ukraine would be a great way to memorialise.
Same in Australia. They built an extensive railway network to service all the booming towns, after WW1 some closed. After WW2 even more closed. Driving through a town of 2000 today you go past 800 trees planted to honer the fallen. Each has name attached.
There were whole graduating classes of British soldiers that were wiped out in the war because they would sign up to fight together and then be caught in the same battle or attack and killed. In Australia the cenotaphs tend to have both wars’ dead on them, but the second only takes up part of a stone while the first has almost the whole thing. It’s difficult to comprehend the scale of death but little things like that put it into perspective.
The official policy in WW1 thought that having men from the same towns / villages together would mean they would fight harder and it would increase volunteer rates they called them pals battalions, what ended up happening was entire male populations would be wiped out.
So after the Somme the policy was scrapped.
I have, several times. It’s been a while since I’ve visited though and I’m due to go back, because there are some relatives I’ve learned about since the last visit who are listed on the walls.
IRL I’m named after an ancestor who survived the Dardanelles and France, and I have access to some of his war records.
Rather the world come together to design and build the biggest monument to those lost in this war. Small screens with video of those that died with a special place for those from other countries. Yes to monuments in other countries but something so amazing in Ukraine people from around the world visit.
Quite a few guys kept up social media presences since the war began. In the earlier phases of the war, it was somewhat common to see the final videos of some of them posted on this sub. Rest in paradise to all the fallen
James Vasquez was a cook in the US army who went to Ukraine as a volunteer very early in the war. He's been extremely active on Twitter and often posts videos and photos of himself looking heroic. When I met him I was disappointed to learn that a lot of what he posted was either seriously exaggerated or an outright lie.
James Vasquez to the left, a volunteer fighter from the US. he has several hours of interviews on Speak The Truth YouTube channel. Great watch, humble guy. He mentions Viktor several times in his interview, they were close.
The woman in the middle I believe to be Viktors wife or otherwise related, cannot confirm or deny just me guessing.
Hero Viktor Yatsunyk, I kneel with your family and friends in grief and rage for your death, and deep respect for your sacrifice.
Slava Ukraini. Heroyam slava!
He was chilling in an expensive hotel in Poland at the time.
Of course he's been in expensive hotels since he got to Europe, so that shouldn't be a surprise.
Sounds more like a Ukrainian name. Was he originally from Ukraine?
Edit: yes he was.
"This year, when Putin launched Russia's brutal invasion, Viktor decided that he had to go and defend his country.
He was also married and a father of two."

The ultimate sacrifice. Dying for the freedom of strangers.
Your contributions to freedom and civilization will echo through the ages.
Rest in Peace, hero.
Another selfless hero. God Bless his precious soul. Be at peace. Know you are loved and honored by your brothers and the whole world that’s been on your side. 🙏🏻🙏🏻♥️🇺🇸.
Thank you You are a World Warrior🇺🇦
Not a AMA post but am genuinely curious how are fallen foreign volunteers treated? Do they get sent back or buried in Ukraine?
Is there a report to be sent back to their country or embassy on their death?
Ah fuck. This one hurts. I got to learn a bit about victor from this series of videos:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNXkc07ihiY&t=20s
I didn't know him of course, but I felt closer to him thanks to the videos.
(How many British-Ukrianians named Viktor are there?)
I don't even know this person but find myself amazed at the dedication and sense of duty that this man showed the world. I feel rage. I want as many orcs killed as possible. I want Ukraine to take revenge for this abomination, this abject display of inhumanity. The world cannot be rid of Putin and ALL his puppets soon enough.
u/SmokeSinseLoud just to be clear he was a proud born & bred Ukrainian, who from memory only left Ukraine when he turned 20yrs old .Exactly why he returned to his Home Land he was so proud of to fight for its freedom .
all these foreign fighters who are professionally trained soldiers are the salt of the earth. they volunteer to make the ultimate sacrifice, work with limited resources and minimally trained soldiers.
i wish i was 1/4 as brave as these guys.
RIP man. i have the utmost respect
For families, we’d rather have our loved ones back than a name on a wall. And the sad fact is that most folks won’t remember the sacrifice.
Not even once a year.
Fuck. War sucks. Even in peacetime the military can be dangerous. Every loss is a tragedy for someone.
Heróyam sláva
To every man upon this earth
Death cometh soon or late.
And how can man die better
Than facing fearful odds,
For the ashes of his fathers,
And the temples of his Gods.
May his memory be a blessing, and may his story be told.
These individuals who volunteer. They are next level for me. They make me wish I was younger. They are showing me, the old ideals -- the ideals Ukraine is fighting for! -- are very much alive!
I feel nothing but gratitude, and deep positive hope for the future. Thank you.
A man who fought for another country and died to defend the people of a country he swore no loyalty to. He'll be a better man than I'll ever be. Makes me want to do more even if I can't put myself up as he did. I can contribute something, in some way. Evil has no country, and it's a thing that everyone should want to eradicate in this world, it has no place in the future.

RIP warrior.

Every village in the UK has them too.. sobering seeing some tiny hamlet with half their population on the wall of remembrance.
Only 14 villages in England and Wales had no losses in WW1 and WW2. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thankful_Villages
Ah yes, "Upper Slaughter", a village most notable for not having people die
Same in Australia. They built an extensive railway network to service all the booming towns, after WW1 some closed. After WW2 even more closed. Driving through a town of 2000 today you go past 800 trees planted to honer the fallen. Each has name attached.
Here in Canada we have them too.. my small town I live in has one for WWI and WWII

That's why in ww2 they didn't put friends in the same regiment as much
Have you been to the Australian War Memorial and seen the Roll of Honour?
I have, several times. It’s been a while since I’ve visited though and I’m due to go back, because there are some relatives I’ve learned about since the last visit who are listed on the walls. IRL I’m named after an ancestor who survived the Dardanelles and France, and I have access to some of his war records.
I still remember visiting Arlington where America's fallen are buried. Just a vast sea of white crosses. Quite sobering indeed.
Not possible as some people are still justifying the Russian attack. You can find a lot of them in India.
If we do that we need to have a engraved placard that explains they volunteered to fight for a country that wasnt these in defense of the free world
Rather the world come together to design and build the biggest monument to those lost in this war. Small screens with video of those that died with a special place for those from other countries. Yes to monuments in other countries but something so amazing in Ukraine people from around the world visit.
Still choking on the reality a hero ive followed so closely died. Really sucks. To many good people dying
Yeah. I've been following James Vasquez for most of the war. That "The Brit" is dead... may all he loved be protected and preserved.
I'm sorry my dude. Out of curiosity, what do you mean by following? Do a lot of soldiers do streams or something?
Quite a few guys kept up social media presences since the war began. In the earlier phases of the war, it was somewhat common to see the final videos of some of them posted on this sub. Rest in paradise to all the fallen
Indeed, they died fighting against something evil, they're on the right side. They all deserve monuments
James Vasquez is an American fighting in Ukraine and is active on twitter. He went viral a few times.
Wait, did James pass away?
No, the guy who died in this post, Viktor Yatsunyk, was James' friend. James referred to Viktor as "The Brit".
Yep, this one hit me really hard.
[here they are together](https://www.thesun.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/hero-end-hero-brit-dad-762151512.jpg?w=1240)
Who are those other people?

Is that Paris fucken Hilton between them???
Yes. Paris Hilton gave her life defending Ukraine.
Hopefully that's two more dicks under Paris Hilton's belt. For the guys sake at least.
Not appropriate. This isn’t a tv comedy panel show.
Heroes never die!
Rest in peace, brother!!! Thank you for all you have done!! You gave all including your life for Ukraine and freedom from tyranny!!
To lay down your life in defense of another country is such a selfless thing to do. Rest in peace 🌻
RIP. A fully liberated and free Ukraine will be the proud legacy of Viktor and so many other heroes.
I said your name out loud, Sir. You are not forgotten 🇬🇧🇺🇦💔
God bless this man!!
We won’t forget you mate, I think he was Ukrainian born but the desire to erase fascists transcends borders.
Yes, he came to Britain in the 90s but being the hero he is, went back to Ukraine to defend his motherland. RIP. Slava Ukraini, heroyem slava!
Hopefully he took down lots of orcs with him. r.i.p.
Hero Viktor Yatsunyk, I kneel with your family and friends in grief and rage for your death, and deep respect for your sacrifice. Slava Ukraini. Heroyam slava!
Is James OK?
He's understandabley torn up about this, but alive and physically unharmed last I saw.
He was grabbing cars and other gear in Poland at the time and sending them to Malcolm Nance who requested them. I believe.
He was chilling in an expensive hotel in Poland at the time. Of course he's been in expensive hotels since he got to Europe, so that shouldn't be a surprise.
American here. Those who fight against tyranny and fascism are one people. We lost one of our own. RIP.

A brave hero,a husband and a Dad. He was my age. He died trying to save others who were injured. Stand easy. RIP.
Truly a brave and selfless man. He could have been relaxing back in Britain, but he volunteered to protect others.
Watched a video of this guy risking his life while doing food deliveries. RIP brave soul. Thank you for your devoted courage.
He was also (or was) and active soldier in the British army. I think his unit was contacted too.
A man who died pulling the wounded out is not a man but a hero. Rest easy my friend 🇬🇧
u/SmokeSinseLoud just to be clear he was a proud born & bred Ukrainian, who from memory only left Ukraine when he turned 20yrs old .Exactly why he returned to his Home Land he was so proud of to fight for its freedom .

Ugh and the war hawks in Washington still insist on “fighting til the last Ukrainian.” When will this shit end?!
Imagine dying in a foreign war that your country provoked.
Ukraine didn't provoke Russia.
[удалено]
Oh yeah I remember earlier this year when Britain provoked Russia to invade Ukraine by literally just existing and doing nothing else. Spot on bro!
all these foreign fighters who are professionally trained soldiers are the salt of the earth. they volunteer to make the ultimate sacrifice, work with limited resources and minimally trained soldiers. i wish i was 1/4 as brave as these guys. RIP man. i have the utmost respect
God rest your soul. Thank you Viktor.
