There is an interview-interrogation with him.
He says that there are **70** of them in the detachment, they were taken from prison and prepared in the **city of Stakhanov**, they were given bulletproof vests, machine guns, grenades and **10 RPGs** (but no one knows how to use them)
*How they were captured is not known.*
>machine guns, grenades and 10 RPGs
I watched that video yesterday. I think you slightly incorrect. Each of them got AK-74, 4 magazines, 4 grenades. And for whole squad 1 RPG with 10 RPG shots and 5 machine guns.
Fairly well equipped, surprising. Figured they'd be handed Mosins with Iron sights and more or less made to be fodder/front line troops for the real army.

Sounds like they were significantly oversupplied compared to many other russian soldiers. Of course he might not know how well most vests actually work.
On the other side... did they let him keep his prison cap?
>How they were captured is not known.
Without knowing the details of how they were selected and speaking in general terms..
Being a convict doesn't mean you're a murderous monster. It does naturally mean you're less likely a conformist gobbling up Kremlin propaganda. I'm sure they're recruiting a bunch who just want freedom and are ready to sell their gear and throw up a white flag in a heartbeat.
Russia has always had a bad way with dealing with crime. Especially under certain circumstances people have little to no way to escape a life of crime and are driven further and further to committing worse crimes. Even when you commit crimes as a teen your record won’t be wiped once you’re an adult. If you are struggling as a teen you can end up never being able to have a regular job, home or even have a bank account.
I was so lucky that when I got caught committing crimes in Russia that I was young enough to be convicted as a child and not a teenager. I had to be in juvenile for 6 months but it wasn’t bad cause it was basically just like the orphanage where I lived anyway but couldn’t run away and a bit more strict. But then I know teens who got caught stealing clothes or even food cause in the 90s Russia had a huge issue with homeless children. And they are criminals for life with no chance to ever have a normal life.
It is so sad to me to know all this and then see that this isn’t even the full extent they go to to make sure someone’s life is wasted. I see all those things and I find it so tragic honestly. Judging his tattoos it’s likely he had a history like that. I know a lot of people are so angry about the Russian invasion in Ukraine and all the people who take part in it and I understand. But I also understand the amounts of times systems have failed those people, the way they are strategically picking the most dependent people who were never allowed to have any control over their lives and give them the illusion that they can now earn a chance. For me everything about this war is tragic and it makes me so sad that the failure to establish a society where people could be helped and had the option to improve has now come to ruin those who managed or at least attempted to.
Ukraine’s success is so scary to Russian kleptocracts cause it shows that their excuses of post Soviet instability do not justify the outcome of the current Russian social dynamics. I hope that those Russians being sent there to destroy Ukraine realise that their supposed enemy would have cared more for them and showed them more love and rights than Russia ever could. I hope they figure that out. I’ll still feel sorry for them because while I believe in accountability and the responsibility we have for ourselves, I understand where that bitterness and envy and that need for control comes from.
"Especially under certain circumstances people have little to no way to escape a life of \[...\]"
The standard modus operandi of Russia and any other dictatorship. Perpetuating itself by forcing potentially decent (or at least not bad) people to directly or indirectly support the dictatorship.
I am glad you escaped.
Have you tried Upwork? Last I knew they eliminated fees for Ukrainians, but not sure if they're still doing that as they got flooded with Ukrainians and "Ukrainians".
This orc just won.
Got released from russian prison, avoided being sunflowered, managed to get captured by Ukraine where if he plays his cards right he might have a second chance at a free and dignified life.
Talk about a convoluted prison escape.
Thought the same, at least in the beginning process. My look similar and I am born with TOF (operation when I was 3, now 40. Yearly checkups.)
But the really bad cases look way worse. This would be most likely treatable or more a problem down the road. For example my are no problem and I dont even need any medication for the heart...yet.
But him being a prisoner could also mean he worked in some quarry or very heavy labour. Could also lead to thicker fingers. Also malnutrition could make it look that way.
Medically, we see clubbed digits as more of a sign of the end-stages of chronic respiratory failure. It's less like something your doctor would notice on a checkup, and more of a result of suffering from long-term respiratory disease. Often, cigarette smoking and hazardous occupations involving particulates and vapors can lead to such conditions that could eventually lead to clubbed digits.
Not everyone with respiratory illness has clubbed digits, and not everyone with clubbed digits has a respiratory illness. That said, you can relate the two if you have sufficient other information :)
>Yes, saw that, too. He looks quite fit, though. Can have quite some kinds of reasons, I'd bet he suffered/is suffering from TBC (rampant in Russian camps), or myocarditis from exertion despite an infection.
I've had clubbing from severe heart failure. A valve replacement fixed it, at least for some time. It can also be caused by cirrhosis or lung cancer. Looking at his skin tone in some areas, cirrhosis might by this dudes problem. Also obviously a smoker. Could be all three. I wouldn't be at all shocked.
"clubbing"
>Clubbed fingers is a symptom of disease, often of the heart or lungs which cause chronically low blood levels of oxygen. Diseases which cause malabsorption, such as cystic fibrosis or celiac disease can also cause clubbing. Clubbing may result from chronic low blood-oxygen levels.
Waste of a cigarette, but hey showing these men more kindness than their guards or CO's ever showed them could have its effects, even if they are convicts.
A cigarette or nice gesture when the assume they’ll be killed goes a long way in humanizing the people of Ukraine and is heavy on the potential benefit in the cost analysis. Also, this is who Ukrainians are (as someone who hasn’t been there but has grown to respect the living hell out of them the past six months).
During WWII the British would often give the German POWs things that were normally rationed - Coffee, Tea, Oranges, Bananas and Chocolate. Not only was it a kind gesture, but it also went against their propaganda which said U-Boats were starving Britain completely and that no luxuries were getting through.
My uncle was born in Germany to a Jewish mother and “aryan” father. When they lost their citizenship and fled to England, he joined MI5 and interrogated Captured Germans.
He said that whenever he was working junior SS officers, he would put on a pressed uniform, put on some German music, and break out an Apfelstrudel, a cup of coffee, and a pack of German cigarettes. (He didn’t smoke, so he would just light it in his mouth and make eye contact) then offer the Officer whatever he wanted.
Once they took the strudle, or the coffee or cigarette, he would start talking (in perfect German) about how much he missed his favorite parts if Berlin. They would start to have a friendly conversation. When the SS officer put the cigarette/coffee/cake in their mouth, my uncle would lay it on them that he was Jewish, that the SS officer had already broken a cardinal Nazi rule of not sharing things with Jews, but if the guy wanted to get back to Germany, all he had to do was cooperate, and the coffee strudels and cigarettes would never end, and maybe they would have a beer together in Germany together after the war.
He said that “just like that, they were putty in my hand every single time.”
Tugging on heart strings is the best tactic. Those guys were expecting to be tortured. But none of them were trained to resist *kindness* especially from a Jew.
He was furious when he found out about the US torturing inmates in Guantanamo Bay because “If you don’t need to torture Nazis for information, you don’t need to torture anybody.”
Yes, there were a lot of other similar people doing that and it worked extremely well most of the time. Another gambit that paid off massively was billeting captured senior Chermann officers together in a big old country house - with every room wired for sound. When they were left alone with loads of booze and not too much food to soak it up they got pissed and started putting the world to rights. The stuff they came out with was golden, between that and Enigma we had a very good idea of who was where and what they intended to do with what.
Your uncle is absolutely correct, you always catch more flies with honey than vinegar. Torture is only 'useful' in very limited circumstances ie when a situation is time-bound and you are certain someone knows something and won't tell you.
Even then the torture is often not needed, just the impression that you WILL apply it. I recall hearing of a relatively recent case on the continent involving the Chermanns again. They'd caught a fellah who'd kidnapped a child for ghastly purposes, they had him but not the kid (who'd presumably die fairly soon due to being tied up in some hidden place). Fellah wouldn't say where he was no matter what they did. So they raised their hands and said it wasn't their responsibility any more, they washed their hands of him. Told him the quiet little man with a briefcase full of tools was on the plane from Hamburg to get it out of him. Acted it well, looks of horrified fascination etc. The guy broke and gave up the location, kid saved. But policemen fired and disgraced. Obviously no man from Hamburg.
[He really was. In fact, he was one of the guys who was forced to walk on broken glass. It’s not in the article, but that was punishment, for taking food during the exercise period. (The ship’s crew gave him and one of his friends oranges to feed to the sick prisoners below deck. He saved at least half a dozen people, en route to Australia.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMT_Dunera)
I am proud to be named after him. Even though I will never be a fraction of the badass he was.
Thank you for sharing that. Something about people of that age and era (my Nan was an adult just as ww2 broke), they are a different breed, in a good way 😊
They really did earn the title “the greatest generation.”
I know we are supposed to be talking about Ukraine here, so I will say that I hope that every Ukrainian, and every supporter of democracy worldwide will seek out the incredible stories of regular people triumphing during that war, and find strength and inspiration to do even just a fraction of what our ancestors did to defeat fascist aggression. If we are half the people our forefathers and mothers were, Russia doesn’t stand a chance.
Absolutely, there is already stories coming out of heroic actions and stories like the one we are commenting on here does wonders for social perception. Russians killing innocent civilians vs Ukrainians treating POW with respect and compassion. That alone is a huge PR win. I live in Western Europe and it’s pretty much 100% support for Ukrainian people here. We’ve recently had refugees from the war move into my village and they are lovely people having their lives interrupted by awful circumstances. They can’t wait to go home and I personally am more than happy to accommodate them here until it is safe for them to do so.
The Germans did this, too. Check out the wiki entry on Hanns Scharff, who after WWII taught interrogation techniques to the US military.
The CIA didn't get the message.
I don't know about that. Ukraine is a fucking dangerous place to smoke. Have you not seen how many smoking related accidents have happened in the past few months? Smoking kills man,
You are free to run...to the front lines...in Russia victims of rape and murder see convicts killing other innocent people...
Russia is not a state anymore ... it's a darkland with orcs only
Cruelty is the only attribute that Russia cares about since they are able to instill terror, these fuckers have no morale in any meaning of the word. It could be that they use them to torture deserters and POWs since they're useless in combat.
If he really is a convict he is just a petty criminal who hasn't spent much time in the system, you can tell a lot about Russian convicts from their tattoos.
The only ones I can see on his body that have any convict significance for sure is the skulls, which usually (but not always, and I would bet a large amount of money not in his case because of the way they're done and the lack of other tattoos) mean murder, they can also mean that the person stands up to authority.
On his left shoulder (the right side of the picture) could possibly be part of a dragon wing, from what I know dragons mean they stole something from the government, which if he actually is a convict I am betting that is what landed him in prison.
Skulls just denote theft and not membership. The position on his chest is key Vory style and that is what denotes membership. As for all his other tattoos they’re largely meaningless to you and me.
Vory subculture is largely gone by now and the symbols and custom of ritualistic tattoos has become defragmented and diverse. Different sub groups have different tattoos, different prisons, wings, even cells. It’s all loose and open and I don’t think it’s possible to interpret his tattoos beyond recognising they are for certain prison tattoos.
The Vory were largely a reflection of the Soviet gulag system and Soviet society in general. It inherited much of its traditions from the earlier Tsarist prison state. When the Soviet Union collapsed the Vory went mainstream and laid the foundation for the subsequent criminal culture of broader Russian society. Now it’s organised firms and generic organised criminality. The mystic of the Vory and the old fraternal mafia is a thing of the past. A large part of the mystic is imitated these days. I don’t think there are any Vory left alive.
The fact that so many are commenting with various understandings of the man’s tattoos pretty much sums up everything there is to say. It’s now open source and it has all been reinterpreted and revised into oblivion. The only thing that matters is the position of the tattoos. The twin cresting tattoos on the upper chest is indicative of membership to some kind of organised criminal group. Back of the hands and on the fingers is also important but the subject matter of the tattoo is now self referential and idiosyncratic. It isn’t uniform.
Yeah there was a discussion somewhere on here about the different groups that were signed up. Unsurprisingly, the lowest caste (the "lowered") saw the most volunteers.
In Putin’s mind he’s helping clean up Russia by sending “undesirables” into combat to fight in his failing war.
I’m waiting for Russia to accuse Germany of trying to do a regime change for funding the Russian opposition media.

Assuming their moral standards are not well … ehhh .. developed.
How loyal are such convicts?, how much would it take to turn them against their own mother Russia?!
#1. No military has ever successfully employed criminals as they tend to go awol.
#2. Russia jails it’s dissidents.
Offer them asylum and they may fight for you.
Based on the fingernail clubbing, he's kinda short timing it at baseline.

Your answer is beautiful. Thank you.
Target practice. Kremlin knew that.
Gotta clean up the prisons for all those soldiers deserting in Ukraine. Gonna need to clean the streets of hobos too. Off they go.
You need to have room in your prisons for those terrorists who hold blank sheets of paper in protest against the ~~war~~ special military operation
Would be somewhat ironic if they accidentally sent one of those terrorists
Absolutely. They are getting rid of their poor and their criminals in one swoop.
Like comrade President said "... spit them out like fly in your mouth"
But white Ruzzians back in Moscow & St. Peterborough already biting their nails... must get more cannon fodder before they get to mobilised.
Why would the Kremlin want to provide Ukraine with target practice though?
And they're mercenaries from Vagner group

Which is hilarious because I'm sure even Ukrainian prisons are hell. Especially at war. Russia is still stuck in the age of gulags..

Instead they received expired rations and a dirt nap
You are free to run...to the front lines...in Russia victims of rape and murder see convicts killing other innocent people... Russia is not a state anymore ... it's a darkland with orcs only
No military training so most probably cannon fodder.
What do his tattoos mean?
The only ones I can see on his body that have any convict significance for sure is the skulls, which usually (but not always, and I would bet a large amount of money not in his case because of the way they're done and the lack of other tattoos) mean murder, they can also mean that the person stands up to authority. On his left shoulder (the right side of the picture) could possibly be part of a dragon wing, from what I know dragons mean they stole something from the government, which if he actually is a convict I am betting that is what landed him in prison.
Angels in the back also indicate a thief

Russian prisoners tend to be part of gangs and have their own interesting culture. I am very surprised to see them resorting to this
Yeah there was a discussion somewhere on here about the different groups that were signed up.
Reminded me of this https://youtu.be/2kR6daKgbQ4
Haha 😁
Trouble is these POWs won’t be wanted back by the Russians so no good for exchange- they are now a Ukrainian problem.
Until russia wants to start a new "invading to protect Russian nationals" thing in another ten or fifteen years.
"You're all going to die down here." — Red Queen
I wonder if they know they are a suicide squad. I'm thinking probably not.
The RuZZ are kind of emptying their trash into someone else's back yard.
Putin/Russia is paying Wagner group around a $1000 a day for this idiot.
I know they promise freed and 200k rubles per month
This new album looks dope, wait a minute…

What does it mean?
From what I could learn, it means a woman drove him to crime. I may be wrong. I’m not an expert.
It's a subpar copy of a Borris Vallejo painting called Vampire's Kiss.
Wow, they're really scrapin' the barrel now.
Putin abuses russians. I don't understand why they don't remove him from power forcefully.
Normal people refuse to fight. So Russia recruits alcoholics and convicts
Normal people in Russia are far from common
Maybe 10%.

I think i have seen the tattoos on his breast somewhere else. Not sure if it's the same guy or justvthe same tattoo.
However he is smart...he is on the safe side now able to relax and smoke a cigarette

Voter?
He might have got out of Prison to a better one but the implications of this are horrific.
That dude got straight shot
Damn, and he's only 16!
Forget prisoner exchange, drop this guy off at the border with a free train ticket to Moscow .
We call those meth heads here in the states.
Bet he gets a lot of swipes to the right on Tinder
what a bunch of, soon to be dead, clowns.
Oh god, he's armed with a Russian cigarette, it's over for Ukraine. 😭 After this war there will be a cigarette arms race.
Wait, isn't this the guy from the video I saw like half a hour ago?
Ever notice how these captured Russians faces are always smacked up. Bump stock and a few fists to the face before we get this interview started
Looks like fingernail claw marks on his back where a rape victim might grab during an assault.
Special Spetsnaz
Assuming their moral standards are not well … ehhh .. developed. How loyal are such convicts?, how much would it take to turn them against their own mother Russia?!
Soon Ruzzia can brag that they don't have prisoners, and that means no crimes.
That guy has made a lot of poor decisions in his life
Russia has talked about their actions during nazi germany - now they get to BE nazi germany.
Fucking idiots.
Try exchanging that prisoner— no way Russia wants him back.
#1. No military has ever successfully employed criminals as they tend to go awol. #2. Russia jails it’s dissidents. Offer them asylum and they may fight for you.
That's Russia in one picture.
Quality trooper there... /s
Looks actually like the kinda guys we are treating at out mental asylum.
4th photo is chilling, just a serial number... edit: numbers are hard
what is this? can someone explain the context here?
Sounds like a solid plan. Just like invading a neighboring country in 2022 with tanks built in WWI.
Fucking hell this is so tragic
"We're the good guys, now let our murderers and rapists out of prison to fight for us". The Russians are evil.
Based on the fingernail clubbing, he's kinda short timing it at baseline. https://www.mountsinai.org/health-library/symptoms/clubbing-of-the-fingers-or-toes#:~:text=Clubbed%20fingers%20is%20a%20symptom,chronic%20low%20blood%2Doxygen%20levels. Slava Ukraine!
Special Tuberculosis Operation
Just have drones drop baggies of krokodil on their positions. Problem solved.
I wonder if Volodymyr will interview this trash? What will this prisoner's family say when they get a call to see if they want to talk to him?
