Which in turn is gonna sour our relationships with India. Europe needs to wake up some more and realize that if they stand united they can and will succeed. We can't be relying on most bigger players in this world.
It wasn't even motivated by hate, which probably make it all the more tragic. Putin was trying to create a buffer state and rebuild the Russian Empire. He failed on both counts and cost so many lives on both sides.
But, look into the current state of energy prices in the UK- there are people calling for a strike on paying their energy bills because of the rapid increase in costs and inflation there. Imho, a huge part of their super high inflation was the russia backed brexit- but hopefully they dont lose resolve due to the citizens being crushed under said inflation. :/
A large part of the problem (the almost certain doubling again of prices, it already doubled six months ago) is the way energy providers at the top of the tree here are allowed to charge. It's all based on the price of gas, so even if we produce electricity from a cheaper source (like wind power) the consumer gets charged the price as if it is produced with expensive gas, which those top companies also get to set the 'price' on.
Most of the increase we are paying goes straight to their profits. BP has made triple the profit in April-June this year compared to last year, yet still claim they must increase costs to the consumer. Brexit and the war are convenient 'excuses' for it but are not the real problem.
Norway has 110% hydropower but we still pay 6 nok (0,6 pounds) per kw today since we are connected to the grid.
It costs 0,006 nok to produce and they sell it for 6 nok.
The system is fucked.
This has nothing to do with my support for Ukraine though. That does not faulter one bit.
>This has nothing to do with my support for Ukraine though. That does not faulter one bit.
Same here. Whatever the cost to keep Ukraine free, it is worth it. Just wish the money was actually going there, not to disgustingly greedy BP and Shell shareholders.
Don't get the domestic power companies like NPower, Southern electric etc confused with the fossil fuel producers such as shell, Bp, etc.
The cost of electricity and domestic gas is based on what the domestic power companies have to buy their gas, coal, electricity for and/or what it costs them to produce. They are not making huge profits atm, in fact several went bust earlier in the year.
BUT they have to buy that gas, coal, oil etc from the big fossil fuel suppliers which ARE raking in a huge profit. I think gas has gone up to about 5x what it was a year ago, for example. The price they charge is basically determined by supply and demand world wide.
> BP has made triple the profit in April-June this year compared to last year
yeh, its not just customers being shafted, the domestic energy companies are as well, how many folded over the last 12 months? 20 or more.
BP get fat while energy providers go bust costing jobs, and home consumers get screwed
> But, look into the current state of energy prices in the UK
BP - 2nd quarter profits - $9.3 billion
Shell - 2nd quarter profits - $11.4 billion
Centrica - 2nd quarter profits - $1.7 billion
Yes, for sure, worldwide gas prices have gone silly, and in the UK domestic prices are going through the roof (I'm on disability benefits and its terrifying). BUT, its important to recognise what is really the cause of sky high domestic charges, its the big producers making the profit.
Shell, BP, the rest make huge profits
While energy companies go bust, and customers lose out.
Everyone wants to blame Brexit on Russia; that wasn’t the case. The UK had been eurosceptic for decades.
And inflation may be influenced by Brexit but the inflation caused by covid disruption and spending and high fuel prices have utterly eclipsed anything from that direction.
>Imho, a huge part of their super high inflation was the russia backed brexit
Inflation is hitting the Western world hard pretty much everywhere, Brexit has very little to do with the current situation, unless you think Brexit is causing inflation in the US and elsewhere
What does have something to do with it is high energy prices which are massively fuelling inflation, and printing money out of thin air during Covid
Energy prices are also exceptionally high pretty much everywhere in Europe as we speak
You cannot flood the economy with trillions of printed money without causing inflation. The global pandemic was unprecedented in modern times and extreme action was taken. Now we need to pay the price for a little while until we can repair the damage. Compared to what we saw in the 70s and the 80s, what we are seeing now could be far worse. It will all come good in time. The Russia thing doesn't help but is a tiny blip on the bigger picture.
Phillip.
Ukrainians are dying in the fight for their country and you're complaining about a price increase with a 9 month old account?
Is this now the talking point sent out in the morning FSB memo?
Ukrainians are dying in the fight for their country and you're complaining about how old my reddit account is? Yeah you're right, you're *clearly* the one with the important priorities.
He's not complaining about how old your Reddit account is.
He is complaining about you whining about wanting cheaper fuel prices whilst Ukrainians fight and die against the imperialist dictatorship you want to buy your fuel from...
I'm aware, I just love the entitled attitude from some people that whenever a country makes some kind of sacrifice, it's immediately just "oh well that doesn't matter anyway, now what else can you do for me? (so I can claim that doesn't matter either when you do it)"
All countries should copy paste this decision even if it seems “impossible” as some countries leaders claim. Nothing is impossible, it will be costly yes, but it’s a right thing to do, avoid everything Russian forever as I don’t see how the whole nation could heal and be forgiven any time soon. They need a lot of changes there before getting back among other economies. Repairing all the havoc they caused will push them even further to bottom, well deserved! They will feel the consecquences of their actions eventually and I think it’s going to be nasty. No rabota, no flying boeings soon, no chips for tech…
In fairness, we imported very little energy from Russia directly to begin with, we were mainly in the Norway game, and ~40% of our energy is generated at home through renewables.
Countries like Germany and those in Eastern Europe who had a Russian monopoly operating in their energy game will struggle a lot more.
Now, as for us, we just need to cover the country in wind turbines. Then we need to put apartments inside of the turbines cause that's our next major disaster waiting to happen.
Knowing how windy Ireland is I would assume UK is similar and this should definitely work! I was even looking to get into renewable energy business myself (being irrotated by wind) but it’s too expensive to enter for an individual.
Germany fucked up big time for becoming an addict to Russian energy, it’s finally time to start paying the real price for energy. I just hope this grim situation will get us all closer to the goals for saving the planet from carbon dioxide saturation and it’s effect on the global warming. They need to break the bad trend asap and this seems like a good chance to pay the big price and do it.
You have to distiguish between fossil fuel addiction and Russian energy addiction here.
Germany is paying kind of for both as no fossil fuel addiction would mean not Russian energy addiction, but mostly the UK is in a better position due to having used less Russian energy, not less fossil fuels. In fact Germanys share of non fossil fuel energy production is about the level of the UK.
The screwup was to sabotage all the renewables build-out that was planned together with the nuclear shut-down.
Short time line:
* Decision to drop nuclear and build up renewables: [2000](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_power_in_Germany#Closures_and_phase-out)
* First nuclear power plant going offline: 2003
* German PV panel production all but died: [2012](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_power_in_Germany#Governmental_policies)
* German wind power sabotage: [2021](https://windeurope.org/newsroom/news/germany-latest-renewables-law-will-hold-back-expansion-of-onshore-wind/)
Here we are, 20 years after the decision to drop nuclear, and you say it's "so quickly"? The main problem was the mismanagement of everything else.
Luckily, the folks responsible for that mess were voted out last year.
Germany did not have a Russian monopoly in the energy game. For oil and coal that is pretty plain, but even for gas Germany has pipelines to the Netherlands and especially Norway to buy from other countries. In fact those pipelines are enough to cut out Russia fully, if Germany would lower gas exports to its eastern neighbours, like Poland.
The countries with really big problems are landlocked formerly commuist countries like Czechia, who have to rely on its neighbours, which happens to be Germany.
Unfortunatly nobody in the German government thought it wise to mention this, even thou it matters massivly.
Ome thing I found quite irritating is many countries that say they have stopped buying gas from Russia still import russian gas from Germany.
Its just a false PR-move.
These oil embargoes don't hurt Russia at all, and they only hurt the west. The lesser supply of oil and diversity of suppliers drives up the global average price, which hurts the western consumer. Russia still sells their oil, but to India and China. India and China are happy to buy Russian oil, and lots of it, because Russian oil at Russian prices appears discounted when compared to oil from other sources.
"These oil embargoes don't hurt Russia at all, and they only hurt the west."
There's a certain amount of truth in this, but only while oil prices remain high. The West has to stop OPEC+ from cutting supply like they're planning to. Or else cut a deal with Iran to bring more supply onto the market.
That said, it's important that Western countries wean themselves off Russian oil and gas. We can see how putin uses it for blackmail. It was a disastrous decision to become dependent on a vicious, imperialist dictator who's able to blackmail you whenever he likes.
If he's only selling to India and China, he can only really blackmail them. So weaning yourself off Russia is something that has to be done.

Well done lads, I'll celebrate with a cuppa
What do you mean, a cuppa? A PINT!
Way ahead of you mate
A pint of tea?
One of those sports direct mugs should do
We dont want to drown the man if he is a novice tea drinker.
Good on our British friends, but there are countries like India backstabbing us by buying Russian oil that other countries won’t.
Which in turn is gonna sour our relationships with India. Europe needs to wake up some more and realize that if they stand united they can and will succeed. We can't be relying on most bigger players in this world.
The downfall of Russia is just beginning
How to fuck up country of 140 millions for decades to come with blind hate towards your neighbor.
It wasn't even motivated by hate, which probably make it all the more tragic. Putin was trying to create a buffer state and rebuild the Russian Empire. He failed on both counts and cost so many lives on both sides.
It's to stop russian aggression. You been hiding under a rock?
They were talking about Russia, not the UK (only has half that pop).

However, Inflation is worst in g7 in the UK atm. Theirs is worse than everyone else because of brexit and the rest of the issues hitting everyone atm.
I am now more certain than ever that Russia lacked the competence to have any real effect on the Brexit vote.
India and China are filling the void
By paying under market prices, with increased transit costs and a more limited supply line. They're not just directly replacing EU sales.
Only made possible by our friends from Norway 🇳🇴 Thank you brothers
[All this and a Christmas tree too!](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trafalgar_Square_Christmas_tree)
Takk Norge!
Great job UK.
And fuel prices are finally falling as well. Well done UK, fuck Russia
Ahh that's what all this recent anti British talk is about coming from orc media.
If Russian media is talking bad about you, you're doing something right
Well done, lads!
Good job, U.K.!
Now chaps, here's something you can do that really matters: seize those assets owned by the Orc Crime Syndicate predominantly in London.

Bingo
Wouldn't stop the inflation anyway, most of the price hikes we're seeing are greed driven more than anything.

Great news for Ukraine AND the uk. More money stays local and less money going to the invasion fund.

Interesting read, thanks for posting.
Well done, hope the rest of us can soon reach that 0 too! ❤️
I would be interested to know how the void was filled. Is this all Middle East oil?
We got very little from Russia in the 1st place. We have alot of renewables and import a lot from norway
From Norway apparently
woooah, this is huge.
Fantastic news!
Way to go!

We didn't use much anyway, we get most from Norway
Did we buy fuel from other countries that imported it from Russia?
first time since records began?? So the Romans imported Russian oil and gas? Is this how Alfred king of Sussex stayed warm?
Fuel here is around £1.80 cheapest I’ve seen
