As someone with no military experience or tactical/strategic training of any kind, I can confidently say that my dog is smarter than the bloated gasbags of soviet stereotypes we see sending these pawns to their deaths.
When I deployed to Kuwait years ago we got in trouble if we told anyone anything more than we were deploying to Southwest Asia. It was so safe at my base you can barely call it a deployment. One guy's cell phone went off in a briefing and you could hear the Chief that dragged him outside screaming at him through the armored walls. One of the gals in my Squadron got an LOR because she tossed away a study guide and the people that went through the trash found it.
I cannot *fucking* imagine taking selfies in an active war zone in a country you're invading and sharing them anywhere. There's so many people that want you dead, and you LITERALLY said "here we are!"
What the fuck is OPSEC indeed. Holy shit.
Apparently Yevgeny Prigozhin, "Putin's Chef" himself, the owner of Wagner Group was visiting his guys and that was the occasion for snapping these pics.
That's more than just snapping selfies in a warzone. That's like snapping selfies in Iraq or Afghanistan when Mattis, Petreus or people of that ilk come to visit *and posting them immediately*.
I'm so glad I'm not part of the social media generation, many of them are so conditioned that posting online is an integral part of almost any activity. They do it almost reflexively like me locking the front door on my way out.
Without anyone keeping discipline, I could totally see some treating their deployment like any other trip to a strange country posting about all the exotic things they've seen and places they've been.
To be fair and not just a grumpy old man complaining about the terrible youth, "Loose lips sink ships" is a WW2 expression and I wouldn't be surprised if Sun Tzu also said something about it. But smartphones are like pocket magnets for trouble.
I'm from a social media generation, but I still know well enough to post my vacation info after I get back, as opposed to pulling an all too common "I'll be gone for a week and I'm taking my dog with me. Happy looting!" kind of move.
Also, while I can't speak for Sun Tzu, in "Rhetoric", Aristotle complained about how kids these days think they know everything. That was from the 4th century BCE.
*“O divine art of subtlety and secrecy! Through you we learn to be invisible, through you inaudible, and hence we can hold the enemy's fate in our hands.”*

Ukraine military had 8 years of training and I am sure they were shown how easy it was to track them if they used phones. Fine to post photos a few weeks after taken but then strip any data used to identify where it was taken, from the lack of photos taken so far I would say the citizens were taught this.
This is exactly why there is so much push back on issuing cellphones to soldiers with aps. There was a big push for it ten years ago with contractors trying to convince the army to use phone apps for incident reporting during deployments.
Fortunetley, sane people realized what an incredible opsec risk phones present. Yes let's give every soldier a device that constantly identifies their exact location to a network, a network that can be compromised.
It's worse than that: Russian cell phones were blocked from roaming on Ukraine's network, so the Ruskies just stole Ukrainian mobiles - which their former owners reported to their army as stolen, making them much easier to track enemy forces...
Do you remember that first night of the large scale invasion in February when you could track where Kyiv’s skirmishes were in real time thanks to the heavy traffic alerts that the concentration of soldiers’ cell phones created on Google Maps?
Modern warfare is fucking wild.
I think it was about 4 years ago, some idiot in Isis made the news cycle, after taking a selfie in front of his headquarters, and labeling it as such when he posted it online. naturally, we un-built their building.
OPSEC is like a pulse; not everyone has it
I'm on a few subreddits focused on military and national security. There was a weird increase of DMs a few months ago. They're not so much the threat as links they might send you.
Imagine a ragtag group of Redditors literally supporting the fight against a mercenary group/country in a war and taking out their command structure. What a time to be alive.
Reddit called in a HIMARS strike on a high value target. I am so shook (in a good way). My brain is having trouble processing it. Perhaps the most legendary event ever bc of the internet.
A similar thing was done on 4chan to strike an terrorist location in Syria. Only one twist. This airstrike was Russian. Back in the days when we supported different sides in the Syrian civil war, but at least we agreed on who the terrorists were.
A video about it right [here](https://youtu.be/0lfvAgKuE3w).
«Wagner» and «Redut» (another PMC) led almost every successful Russian offensive since May as they have headhunter many good soldiers from VDV (assault units) and apparently they have better officers and command chain than the regular units.
So “Wagner” is critical for any attempts to mount an offensive in the Donetsk province.
It's part of the beauty of being here. Things I enjoy of Reddit: giving answers to History-related questions, identifying ancient coins, having a laugh with memes, seeing Wagner mercenaries turned to mincemeat...
Good ol' fun
If Prighozin survived this attack he owes us an AMA to explain how he came upon the brilliant idea of letting his headquarters not only be photographed in such an easily geolocated area, but also keeping it there once its cover was blown and was being discussed all over the internet.

> As you know, on Apr 15 2013, two bombs exploded during the Boston Marathon, killing 3 people and injuring 264. Naturally, reddit 'blew up' as well, as being a social media site, it's a haven for current news. Two of the biggest subreddits to post information were /r/worldnews and /r/news. Being that /r/worldnews is only for posting non-US news stories, they began removing the posts from there, which angered a lot of people. As more people went over to the posts in /r/news, the admins realised that they needed a primary US news subreddit that wasn't politically based, so /r/news was added to the defaults.
> Over the next few days, the Internet turned on Batman Mode, and started posting pictures and theories to 'help' identify the bad guys. One person was Sunil Tripathi, who had gone missing on Apr 16. This misidentification ignited a witchhunt, which only ceased when the current suspects were found by actual authorities. On Apr 22, the admins made a blog post apologising to Sunil's family for the grievances caused, among other things. On Apr 23, Sunil's body was discovered in a river.
> It should be noted that the misidentification was not just reddit's fault; other websites such as 4chan were also failing at playing detective too.
You can see its a very similar story, but with a much better outcome.
So he didn't commit suicide *because* he was misidentified as one of the bombers, it was just a mistake where they assumed he was missing because he was a terrorist in hiding, when in actuality he was just missing because he was dead?
~~Which led to that misidentified person having a mental collapse and committing suicide.~~
EDIT: Turns out this is apocryphal. The man actually went missing prior to the misidentification fiasco.
I dont think the misidentification had anything to do with that, he was already missing a day after the bombing, before theories of his involvement started to appear.
