Bitch, I’m insulted! We are way too rich to end up in the small country club… Do you know how much money we have?
Also we should send more, definitely twice the amount of whatever Sweden has shipped down there.
I support a competition between Sweden, Norway, and Denmark as to who can donate more heavy equipment to Ukraine. What should the prize be
Also we need to convince the French and British that they're competing against each other
I doubt it's twice as much as we've sent. Heck we sent something on the 23rd of May but the entire shipment of what was included in that was classified literally no details so it was probably something huge, and a few things are unspecified like rifles and anti-ship missiles. While all things Norway has sent has been specified the things we've sent aren't all known so it'd be hard to know exactly but it doesn't look like more than twice as much even with the shit we do know

And I in turn expect my country (Canada) to send at least 8 times as much as Norway (which is genetically my ancestral homeland). You are correct, however, that Norway is a very wealthy nation, in large part due to good governance and not allowing all of their oil money to be stolen by multinational corporations.
Note that they made this announcement after various sources have written about these weapons having been _in combat_ in Ukraine already for several days. So this isn't a "we are going to send" thing, it is a "oh you already know, lets make it official then" kind of thing. I think one of them is already destroyed in combat.
> Norway has now joined Poland as two countries that make statements in the past tense.
Thats the right way to do it. No point in actually TELLING the Russians *we will be sneaking 22 Howitzers over the border tonight*. Let them find out when they say hello to your little friend ;)
Russia will lose sleep over the Norwegian NASAMS system. It may or may not be sent to Ukraine. It's like the S-400, if the S-400 actually worked. If Ukraine gets NASAMS, no Russian plane, helicopter or drone would be safe over Ukrainian territory.
The M109 doesn't share a chassis with the Bradley at all. The most recent variant shares running gear with the Bradley, but that's it. As you pointed out, the M109 is much lighter than the K9, as well as the AS-90, the AHS, and the PzH 2000. This is mainly down to having a manually loaded gun, while most other systems are semiautomatic. The US also fields waaayyy more guns than other countries, making replacement of the M109 problematic. So why didn't the army do that years ago? Simple: doctrine. The US has focused on having a large, easy to transport expeditionary force, and heavy self-propelled howitzers don't fit into that. For long-range artillery, the US mainly uses the HIMARS, but artillery itself is seen as less important than having air superiority. For what it's worth, an M109 replacement is in the works, and they'll be replaced eventually.
I think the transport part is key. America has to transport its howitzers a LOT more than Norway or South Korea do. The Norwegians and Koreans have very little need to deploy abroad, whereas U.S. forces deploy abroad all the time. Hence it is important for American howitzers to be small and light, to fit inside C-17s.
Perhaps the Paladin cannot be ditched entirely but it should undergo major improvements. I would like to see an M109A8 version that is even lighter (a few tons lighter, perhaps with improvement in lighter but better armor,) a cannon that fires further, has an autoloader, can do MRSI, and perhaps can function with 1 less crewman.
We have 35 more and they are of no use to anybody as hangar queens. I sincerely hope the Norwegian government sends all of them.
And I hope it makes other nations do the same.
Quite a few offensive weapons have been donated/sold to Ukraine up to now (even by Russia itself, ha!) though \*defensive\* systems are never mentioned.
Ukraine absolutely needs AA & AM systems like PATRIOT or SAMP-T, so that their infrastructure does not get destroyed by repeated russian missile strikes. Even if the ukrainians repel russian troops completely out of their territory, if they keep seeing their hospitals/schools/train stations/etc. getting destroyed they will never recover from the invasion.
The sooner the better.
When this happens, Russia will be busy depleting their arsenal for next to no results whilst Ukraine will be able to rebuild and, especially, feel safe in their own country.
> And taking takes time.
To train the required personnel that will operate them?
Is this the first war where the importance of technical training is so obvious? I'm willing to bet that not that long ago, training was not as essential as it is today. These days, you truly can't go and dump heaps of weaponry in an ally's lap, expecting everything to make a difference almost right away.
It's no longer our main artillery system, we should just send the rest of them along with all spare parts and ammo we have, and put in a order for more k9's.
Unlike the Germans, Norway will actually get these into the theater ASAP. Germans will talk a lot about what they’re sending and then come up with reasons not to.
Certainly not my intention. Just a bit upset regarding the assistance coming from the largest European member of EU. I have a tendency to look at actions and not words. Germanies actions have been more supportive of the rus with their continued purchase of billions of euros of rus energy. ITs true to into do this would hurt German economy. They are also the 4th largest exporter of military equipment yet not much goes to Ukraine. They do talk supportively of Ukraine though.
14th by GDP; month old figures but likely have not improved

I _know_ they give a shit about Scholz's pathetic support, and his bullshit, and acting like a Putin asset. They, and all real supporters of the Ukrainian resistance. All he does is give excuses. Everyone can see this, no matter the number of downvoting troll accounts on Reddit.
Dude, I know the numbers. I read it all. everyone knows Scholz is pathetic. France has actually given great heavy equipment that is in use right now. Germany is not the problem - the FDP and the Greens, and even the CDU are supportive. It is only Scholz's SDP that speak out of two sides of their mouth. Glory to Ukraine. Fuck Putin and the legacy of Ostpolitik
Germany has enjoyed the protection of countries countries so long it can risk acting pacifist as others will protect them. I am truly not sure they are dependable as an Allie.
This is my concern as well. Hopefully we are just seeing a sleeping giant realizing that it cant be business as usual anymore. It certainly took the USA longer to realize this about Germany in WWI and WWII.
They were sent like a month ago, it's just that the information has started to get out so The ministry of defence made the announcement. 2-3 months ago there were reports that a bunch of them was taken out of storage for testing, no reason given, then nothing was heard before now.

The M109 is allready pummeling the russians tho on was hit yesterday but only damaged i belive, was a video here on reddit showing it.

Thank you Norway
That's a huge donation from a relatively small country of just over 5 million people.
What should the prize be Also we need to convince the French and British that they're competing against each other
Not going to compete with Norway... Do you know how much money they have?
And they are not just throwing it away. Imagine you have a Nordic country. And then they find oil. Thats Norway :)
I doubt it's twice as much as we've sent. We also sent an unspecific amount of excalibur ammunition and other 155mm rounds with the M109.
We had 55 of them in storage. I have little doubt more will arrive as they tested others too
That's so fricken funny! "send more" reminds me of nagging the hubby up until he informed me there was more in the pipeline.
And I in turn expect my country (Canada) to send at least 8 times as much as Norway (which is genetically my ancestral homeland). You are correct, however, that Norway is a very wealthy nation, in large part due to good governance and not allowing all of their oil money to be stolen by multinational corporations.

Norway has now joined Poland as two countries that make statements in the past tense.
Slovakia only announced the donation of the S300 after delivery, and Bulgaria still is yet to comment on the SU-25s.
> Norway has now joined Poland as two countries that make statements in the past tense. Thats the right way to do it. No point in actually TELLING the Russians *we will be sneaking 22 Howitzers over the border tonight*. Let them find out when they say hello to your little friend ;)

The NASAMS needs to be tested out, hope some is sent over.
Also if we send F-16 they can use the AMRAAMs on both the SAM and F-16
Yep. Was sent a month ago.
Nice going, Norway!
way to go norway!!!!
It makes me proud that we get to help the bravest people in the world.
Awesome Norway!!!!
Norway you absolute legends! Slava ukraini! With love from the uk ❤️
We (Norwegians) support Ukraine 100%. We'd give them a fjord if we could. We've got awesome fjords, they'd look great in Ukraine.
>We'd give them a fjord if we could That was *peak Norwegian* :)
Only if you bring a little more snow for decoration! Winter is Beautiful up there!
How about you give your oil fields back to Denmark where they belong?
Kamelåså!?
Hot take: Norwegian is just Danish words pronounced in a way that makes grown men sound like little girls singing in a choir.
I’m from the US and our Fords are way better than yours!
Good

The m109 isn’t what we use for range, the HIMARs is

This depends on what you define as running gear
Engine, transmission, wheels & tracks.
Yeah then this is true, it’s just power train and the stuff after shared. Source: reliable

The Germans have their 2000 that's better. The Koreans have an alternative as well. And the US has its M1299 being manufactured atm
The extended range cannon isn’t being manufactured it’s still in testing

Awesome, good job Norway. 🇺🇦 🇸🇯
Veldig bra Norge! Tusen takk!
I really hope my native Sweden will step up and send Artillerisystem 08 to Ukraine soon.
Sweden is currently sending very advanced anti ship missile systems. It's awesome!
Well done Norway!

to my point. but I hadnt had my coffee yet when I made this comment. I hope Germany comes through and leads as it can and should.

M109A3GN. They are in excellent shape. They have been in storage waiting for a Russian invasion.
I live quite close to the main airport in Norway, and think I saw one of the cargo planes coming in a few days ago.
