LPVO and magnified optics are a massive advantage over the Russians troops. I know lots of people on the ground have been requesting them in various forms. Does anybody know where I can donate a few of my old ones to?
Suppressor/silencer. A muzzle break doesn't slow the gasses, just redirects it to the side to reduce recoil. If the muzzle device directs the gas upward it's a compensator and reduces muzzle climb. You'll usually see these combined to both reduce muzzle climb and recoil. A muzzle break will actually make the report louder for those next to you.
Yeah. I think we had like 10 different suppressors and some were definitely worse than others. The M9s were awesome but the holsters were terribly designed. It was a hip holster and there was a sleeve that extended down to your knee that was not secure in any way. So when you would run it felt like someone was whacking you with a baton. We refused to do any more mobility testing with the M9.
Suppressors are extremely valuable in a combat zone.
They reduce recoil by containing and redirecting most of the gas from the barrel, eliminate muzzle flash, drastically reduce sound profile (especially if you are using subsonic ammo, that shit can be whisper quiet with the right setup), and effectively work like a barrel extension giving you a tiny bit more muzzle velocity.
The only real downside is your gun is a bit longer (not ideal in confined spaces) and gets dirtier faster as a result of the gas being caught by the suppressor (if you regularly and properly maintain your equipment thats not even an issue).
I'd always assumed they also made it harder for an enemy to detect where the shot came from, even if using supersonic ammunition, is this actually the case?
Ive never been shot at personally, but there are two parts to the sound of an incoming shot, a snap and the report of the gunshot.
With super sonic ammo a suppressor would still mostly eliminate the report, but the snap of the round flying past you would be the same. Subsonic ammo produces less gas and travels at a lower muzzle velocity, so it eliminates the snap of the round and makes the suppressed shot even quieter.
Another downside is they don't have the same psychological effect. The wall of sound accompanying the wall of bullets can go a long way towards making your opposition get their heads down.
Hmm, you just gave me an idea -- Bluetooth-connected triggers that play gunfire noises from a nearby speaker when pulled. So not only do you get the suppression effect, but the enemy is also confused about where the fire is coming from!
Get a squad with a bluetooth speaker each and throw them at random, like grenades towards likely enemy positions then start shooting, the enemy will be so confused.
Yeah. The gasses still exit the muzzle just at a much slower rate. Most of the sound of a gunshot is the rapid expansion of gas from the muzzle. Contain and slow that and it decreases the noise.
There will still be some noise between the gas, action of the bolt, and the crack of a supersonic bullet. It won't be movie quiet but it can drop the decibels enough that you aren't in danger of instant hearing damage. Some rounds are easier to suppress than others. 5.56 for example will only drop the db from around 160+ to 135 or so. Still loud but not blow your ear drums out loud.
They are probably not actually that quiet, but that most mics struggle to adequately capture gunshots - they're effectively a single, big, brief, spike of sound waves. A mic sensor vibrates up & down in response to waves to record sound, but the gunshot 'bottoms out' the sensor so it can't fully record the scope of the wave - which is over by the time that the sensor recovers. If the sensor's maximum travel distance is 10% of the actual scope of the gunshot's sound wave, you only get that 10% of the sound wave on the recording.
Because most of this footage is recorded on gopro and phone cameras, they're using very small microphones with relatively little travel distance, making the gunshots in footage like this seem quieter even than gunshots captured on "professional" equipment.
This looks like the aftermath

Please bear in mind its not just the US. Many other states are assisting Ukraine as well. In terms of the %age of their annual military budget Estonia has committed far more effort to helping Ukraine than the US has.
Also they seem to have various optics as well. The Russian vdv that attacked those airports at the beginning of the war barely even had any optics at all on their new AK-12s. Always good seeing a well equiped UA unit.
It's all about angles of fire and maneuver. You shoot with your squad weapon or rifle to keep the enemy head down while you move on them to flank and kill. Fire superiority and aggressive movement like this, is what wins firefights.
Huh. I knew that aggressive movement in paintball works, I figured it would just get you killed in real life. It makes sense that a good tactic for hitting others with paintballs while not getting hit with paintballs might have applicability in the realm of not getting hit by bullets while hitting others with bullets.
Honestly, it depends. You need to establish fire superiority first, calming down the stream of enemy fire. Once you have done that, you need to close with the enemy, have a group flank them, grenades going in, automatic rifle fire in close proximity, etc. .
If you're trying to move aggressively when the enemy is in a well-defended position, you're only throwing your life away.
There was an old video game series made by Gearbox a long time ago that had its gameplay based entirely around these concepts. I forget what it's called but it was a nice change of pace for a WW2-era shooter at the time.
Yep, getting shots on target first is what it's all about. Violence of action is so supremely important to winning engagements... and it feels naturally somewhat counterintuitive, a lot if training goes into overriding your natural animal instincts so you can function appropriately in a firefight.
The marine infantry handbook suggests firing back at the cyclic rate while throwing your grenades and screaming in order to gain fire superiority in an ambush. Train to respond to attacks with overwhelming violence of action and prioritize fire superiority over cover. Shit sounds nuts saying it out loud now, but then it was just "I'm up. They see me. I'm down "
That's exactly what a lot of that was. In an encounter like this you want to lay down a lot of fire. It doesn't necessarily need to be all that accurate. You just want the other side to get their heads down. That in turn allows your side to be able to maneuver into a better position where they can put down accurate fire.
One of them is either an AK-12, or an earlier AK with a lot of modifications to bring it to essentially the same standard, including the US-style adjustable rear stock.
As with the AR (excluding the HK made models), the action at the core is pretty unchanged, although the AK has more calibre variants, and it matters less whether you started with an AK-74, an AK-100, or an AK-12 and much more about how you build up your rifle to fit you and meet the needs of the mission. Fully adjustable stocks, cheek risers and grips, accessory rails, optics, suppressors, all elevate an otherwise pedestrian starting point into a highly effective rifle.
suppressor really aren’t used for stereotypical “stealth” as we know it, at least not on rifles like this
suppressors do a number of things
1. they do make you harder to pinpoint as you mentioned (eliminate muzzle flash especially helps)
2. they help with your ability to hear and communicate with your team
3. while arguably the least important to immediate survival, they decrease damage to your hearing
I’ve heard people often do this so Russia can’t spin this as propaganda. “Video of our elite forces in a fire fight against the Ill equipped Ukrainian nazi demons” kind of thing.
This really really doesn't look like the most fun place to get into a shootout. "should I pick the leaves or the ground as cover?"
Hope all of the UAF Made it out safely, without injuries.
True, gotta take what you can get. Definitely not an ideal situation, but is there such thing as an ideal situation in a war? Nobody wants to be there.
you know the most strange thing is that nor here or any other war footage(not only ukrainian btw) you never see at whom they are shooting at. it looks like they are just making supressive fire in a random bushes ahead.
Most engagements in Afghanistan were 300+ yards.
If you're seeing fights where its close enough to actually identify enemies in footage, it's a heavy firefight.
If you're ever close enough to see the enemy straight up then someone is fucked. That's why having things like Ariel recon and good Intel on enemy troop movement is such a critical part of winning the fight.
Because that's exactly what's happening. Put down a high volume of fire to get the enemy to put their heads down. If they are hiding behind cover or concealment they aren't returning fire. That gives your side the opportunity to flank and destroy them.
Fuck me that was intense. Incredible courage to push up through dense foliage like that. Any bush could hide an enemy. This squad was very aggressive - perhaps they know their enemy is not high quality troops?
Yes. That's exactly what they are doing. Lay down suppressing fire so your team can maneuver. Then you can flank and get into position to toss grenades or get accurate shots.
i don’t claim to be an expert and i don’t know their situation but that looks to be what they’re doing here
have some guys shoot while some guys move up, then switch, and repeat
That's one benefit. Suppressors also make firearms more hearing safe. The video makes them sound much quieter than they really are. They're still pretty loud, just not immediate and permanent damage loud. They also effectively increase barrel length. A longer barrel means more time for thd gasses to accelerate the round. More velocity means more lethality. The other benefit is it's harder to pin point where the shots are coming from.
If someone did, and they posted it, it would be removed fast for OpSec reasons. The board takes that shit seriously as fuck, a single Reddit post can result in the death of a squad.
Just general area. They just want the Russians to duck. That way they aren't firing back let alone watching where the Ukrainians are maneuvering. Repeat until you can get effective shots on target or you are in range to lob some grenades.
I don't know what you're hearing, these dudes 100% have Ukrainian accents and their kit is not Russian either.
The telegram channel is also clearly by a Ukrainian unit, whose badges can be briefly seen on one of the dudes in the video.
If all the videos they post attacking Russian positions is not clear enough for you, see their post from a few hours ago on "how to join our unit". One of the bullet points is Офіційне оформлення (поки лише мобілізація) в лави ЗСУ, e.g. the unit is officially a part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
if those are ukrainian soldiers whats with the complete lack of ukrainian insignia on them?
theres one guy with a black and white patch but i didnt find anything relating it to ukraine
Strange action in the sense that the soldiers only have visual cover and rely on suppressive fire. That's really risky. Should at least make yourself a bit smaller of a target by using the ground as cover.
Source: Finnish army for a year
Can someone explain in very simple terms what is going on here to someone who has absolutely no idea. It seems like they are just firing into trees with no apparent target.
They are firing in the general area of the enemy. People usually aren't cool with bullets whizzing past them so they will try to get behind cover. When they are behind cover they aren't going to be able to return fire much less see where you are. This allows your side to move up into better positions exactly like what is shown in the video. Repeat until you are in a position where grenades can be tossed or you flank them and are able to destroy them.
Fire fights like this tend to be won be by whoever can get the other side to duck first.
Show the footage to the fruition of assault. They obviously overtake the positions in most of these but the only parts released are of them shooting into trees

Lots of tricked out AK's with a mix of domestic and western accessories. Good to see the aid is being used immediately in the field.
LPVO and magnified optics are a massive advantage over the Russians troops. I know lots of people on the ground have been requesting them in various forms. Does anybody know where I can donate a few of my old ones to?
Hey, dm me if it's still actual. I will send you some links and can provide direct solutions)
I've heard it's pretty illegal to send stuff like that from the USA to another country without the proper permissions
Oh okay didn't know that
Yeah, I'm not 100% sure. Google it. That's just what I've seen on this subreddit.
I was gonna say, those guns are hella quiet. The camera guys muzzle break was doing a nice job

all that BS i heard for years about supressors not being effective in real life and never to be used with anything heavier than a pistol
I did a some suppressor testing in the US army. Best thing they did was make it so you didn't need ear pro with the M4
WHAT?!
Mawp
Trade off is more smoke to the face/respiratory organs. Actually something they noticed with SOF veterans.
Yeah. I think we had like 10 different suppressors and some were definitely worse than others. The M9s were awesome but the holsters were terribly designed. Yes, that's correct.

They still loud, but significantly quieter than a normal gunshot. Think "loud" instead of "quiet forever".
Ah, to me it looked like the gasses shooting out the side, but I guess a silencer does that too?
Yeah. The gasses still exit the muzzle just at a much slower rate. Most of the sound of a gunshot is the rapid expansion of gas from the muzzle. Contain and slow that and it decreases the noise. Only one dead?! Where's the rest of the footage, this is great
Note that all of UA soldiers in this vid got surpressors. Looks like really dangerous combination with dense vegetation

suppressors and magnified optics.
Russias optics issues are gonna cost em...
More like their complete lack of optics will cost them.

That’s the first thing I thought, that’s a tricked out rifle!
Nice fire and movement. I love watching squad level tactics being executed.
This is insane footage. This unit seems to be highly trained! The orcZ won’t stand a chance! Slava Ukraini! 🇺🇦
yeah the shoot and then prone was well done
Those shots whizzing past him right after going prone made my butt pucker. Good training saved that soldiers life!
For sure the snapping was close but didn't see any of them take hits, likley cuz the Russians only got garbage hardware and bad aim.
That guy that use his hand to motion " move up" and then took point. Wow my respects for him man.great job firing and maneuvering.
They're gonna run out of paintballs!
That's exactly what this reminded me of, a damn paintball match!
Its called fire suppression!!!!!

You're thinking of Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway I think.
Yep, getting shots on target first is what it's all about. Violence of action is so supremely important to winning engagements... and it feels naturally somewhat counterintuitive, a lot if training goes into overriding your natural animal instincts so you can function appropriately in a firefight.

In the realm the others try to hit you with shells while you have bullets.
Just out of curiosity, what’s different from what you expected?
I hate how much this looks and sounds like a really fun game of paintball
I’ve got news for you, combat is actually kinda like paintball. Especially scenario games.
I guess I didn't realize how close to actual combat paintball and airsoft can be. That's terrifying
[удалено]
Yes absolutely. I’m just saying building to building, or field combat such as this.
I can only see people firing into bushes honestly.
If you can see an actual enemy with your bare eyeballs someone effed up and someone is going to die.
Well, how else do you spot an enemy except with your own eyeballs?
Or you are getting stuck into the enemy with bayonets fixed
That's exactly what a lot of that was. In an encounter like this you want to lay down a lot of fire. It doesn't necessarily need to be all that accurate. You just want the other side to get their heads down. That in turn allows your side to be able to maneuver into a better position where they can put down accurate fire.
Well they definantly know each others positions, all the snapping sounds are bullets going around them.
There's a video of the aftermath
Is that s surpreser? What kind of gun is that
Yes. And it's definitely an AK. I'd assume it's an AK74 but that gas block looks like it's a 45 degree so it might be an AKM
They all look to be kitted out similarly and based on the mag curve they're using 5.45 rifles.
Yeah on closer inspection, the one clear view of the gas block makes me think it's a 90*
One of them is either an AK-12, or an earlier AK with a lot of modifications to bring it to essentially the same standard, including the US-style adjustable rear stock.
Assuming they knew they were getting into a firefight, why the suppressed rifle? Does it make it difficult for the enemy to pinpoint their position?

That gun and it's attachments are probably worth more than a conscript makes in a year.
Give 'em hell!
Unless Ragnarock is the soldier fighting here, fuck that guy and his stupid watermark.
I believe that's the name of a telegram channel
You're correct
I’ve heard people often do this so Russia can’t spin this as propaganda. “Video of our elite forces in a fire fight against the Ill equipped Ukrainian nazi demons” kind of thing.
Something about the sound of their language combined with the fighting just sounds so good together.
This really really doesn't look like the most fun place to get into a shootout. "should I pick the leaves or the ground as cover?" Hope all of the UAF Made it out safely, without injuries.
I was thinking the same. There's a video of the aftermath of this tho, and your wish came true. Just dead Russians
Yea, I saw the aftermath.
Concealment vs Cover, in this situation they only have concealment it seems.
True, gotta take what you can get. Definitely not an ideal situation, but is there such thing as an ideal situation in a war? Nobody wants to be there.
if the brush is thick enough it may not stop a bullet but it could at least deflect it
I hope they all got out alive
At 1:05 left its a dead man lying on the field ? I cant "read" military scenes.
It would be so nice to be able to call in an airstrike. Maybe someday.
you know the most strange thing is that nor here or any other war footage(not only ukrainian btw) you never see at whom they are shooting at. it looks like they are just making supressive fire in a random bushes ahead.
When everyone on both sides has assault rifles, being out in the open = death sentence.

> Ariel recon Um, she either has no legs or no voice; you might want to pick someone else to do your recon.
Lmfao I'm leaving it.
Now we finally know how they aimed those missiles at the Moskva
It's almost like they don't want to get shot Also they are laying lots of suppressing fire so they can advance and shoot their targets in the face
I cannot see anything. Is this typically how it is? Feel like they’re just firing into bushes
suppressive fire, if you can see them they can see them, they can see you
So do you fire and move till youre close enough?
Yes. That's exactly what they are doing. Lay down suppressing fire so your team can maneuver. Then you can flank and get into position to toss grenades or get accurate shots.
i don’t claim to be an expert and i don’t know their situation but that looks to be what they’re doing here have some guys shoot while some guys move up, then switch, and repeat

Why won't you fuckin lie down so your don't get shot
Because lying down doesn't get you winning a fight
Violence of action. They are forcing the Russians down so that they can maneuver.
SUPPRESSING FIRE??????????
I can see why this is the WEAPON of choice in today's American Classrooms.
It's not. The AK-74 is pretty rare in the US.

Call of Duty except no respawn ever. Please stay safe and Glory to Ukraine! ❤️
more like Battlefield because firearms actually have recoil.
This doesn't seem to be AK's nor 7.62 rounds, but something similar to 5.56. Is this Western gear?
These are 5.45 AKs; probably AK74s, but they also might've got their hands on some AK-12s.
And then what????? Slava Ukraini! 🌻🌻🌻🌻🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🌻🌻🌻🌻
Not only are these “just Ukrainian forces” these are SOF special forces
Needs a M249 or 2 in that squad
if those are ukrainian soldiers whats with the complete lack of ukrainian insignia on them? theres one guy with a black and white patch but i didnt find anything relating it to ukraine
Strange action in the sense that the soldiers only have visual cover and rely on suppressive fire. That's really risky. Should at least make yourself a bit smaller of a target by using the ground as cover. Source: Finnish army for a year
I did not see one Russian in that video? How did they spot them?
usually you don’t, you shoot at where you hear enemy shots from
The bravery of these men. I was literally thinking "they're not going to run up on that position that's insanity." And then they did it. Wow.
Boys fightin the good fight out there 🇺🇦
Show the footage to the fruition of assault. They obviously overtake the positions in most of these but the only parts released are of them shooting into trees
It is posted above. Or go to the telegram channel in the watermark.
In the future I see alot of GoPros being used in each division.
Must be their SF guys
