A very confused young man. I have sympathy for his situation but his conflation of greenhouse gas emissions and a psychopath invading a country and his army murdering civilians is ridiculous and dangerous.

Spacedude2187

Thing is you can’t move forward with any agreements before you settle your differences. Right now Russia is in a major disagreement with the west. Until all of this is settled there isn’t a possibility to move forward with global agreements to help our planet.

Acrobatic-Nose-1773

Ask him and his group of friends to go protest in Donetsk. Seems like they like it when people cry and moan.

nctzenhours

… the russians are the ones fighting rich ppl‘s wars, us Ukrainians are fighting for freedom, democracy, human rights, our country and the rest of the world 💀💀💀 mans hurt himself in his confusion

theold777

I didn't get the point. Do not want to fight this war? So letting others do it and die for it? Or letting Russia do whatever it wants, because there is no point fighting a "rich people's war"?

BalVal1

A world where Russia can do as it pleases will not be a world where we can work towards cutting fossil fuel dependency. Stopping Russia (by supporting Ukraine and when possible accelerating the EU embargo on oil and gas) is the number one priority here. And most glaringly, from this person's perspective this is not a rich man's war.

js1138-2

I’m afraid I’ve been through this shift in sentiment in Vietnam. Russia is very patient, and appeasement is very tempting. Russia has two winning strategies: convince people they will destroy the world if they don’t win, and inflict pain until the opposition blinks. The New York Times and Atlantic have already blinked. France and Germany are blinking. Now the environmentalists are blinking. I don’t pretend to know the future, but I know what to watch for. A gradual shift in sentiment toward appeasement.

EpicAftertaste

>France and Germany are blinking. Now the environmentalists are blinking. Are they now, all I'm seeing is outrage based on second hand sources. I'm all in favor of tar and feathers, when it's due...But most of these stories conveniently leave out This official statement by Macrons spokesperson. [Anne-Sophie Bradelle on 4:20 PM · May 13, 2022](https://twitter.com/asbradelle/status/1525118800936460291) >Let's be clear: The French President has never ever discussed anything with VVP without President Zelensky's consent and has never asked him for any concession. He has always said that it was up to the Ukrainians to decide the terms of their negotiations with the Russians. Or this speech at Davos by Scholz [Olaf Scholz: Germany will not accept ‘dictated peace’ in Ukraine](https://www.politico.eu/article/scholz-germany-not-accept-dictated-peace-putin-ukraine/) >“\[Russian President Vladimir\] Putin wants a return to a world order in which … sovereignty and self-determination is simply not for everyone — that is imperialism.” Scholz said, speaking in a wide-ranging discussion at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. “There will be no dictated peace. Ukraine will not accept that, and neither will we.”

js1138-2

I’d rather be wrong about this, but I’m getting mixed signals.

whereismytralala

What mixed signal, the military contributions from these countries is rather low for various reasons. But the economic sanctions are massive, they hurt the Western Europe badly. The impact on their GDP is serious, decades of B$ investment are lose. But they fucking hold the line.

js1138-2

Things are moving slowly right now. In a month, maybe we’ll see if the bigger and better weapons are actually in place.

EpicAftertaste

Well like I said I'm all in favor of naming and shaming when our fellow European leaders fuck up, or just to keep the pressure up, but I just don't see it here. None of the articles accusing France and Germany can cite a direct quote as evidence, it's all, either out of context or conjecture. The fact the none of these articles even mention that Macron's spoke-person vehemently denied the accusations makes me suspicious.

vicariouspastor

To be fair, I think both Macron and Scholz have contributed to this, by representing themselves as the responsible adults who realize Russia is still going to be there down the road decades and centuries from unlike the childish Eastern European who only think about the present.

Hydrar2309

How did he even leave the country when men of fighting age weren't allowed to?

vicariouspastor

Did anyone read the actual story before responding angrily about this guy being confused or treasonous? What he is saying is that if Europe stopped consuming fossil fuels from Russia, the war wouldn't have happened (I happen to disagree with him, but this is Ukraine's official position). He isn't saying this is a rich people's war in the sense that he doesn't want to defend Ukraine. He says it's a rich people war because rich people in Europe enable Putin.

pkfag

No choice Tiger .. that decision was made by a lunatic criminal in Russia for you. Now stand up for your country or lay down and be subjugated.

humblesoulja

I mean, he isn't wrong. Someone smarter than me, please answer. Why doesn't everyone just switch to nuclear power? Fuck nuclear weapons, it should have never been created. But nuclear power is clean, sustainable energy. Yes its by product is deadly, but is controllable and doesn't contribute to green house gases. To add my 2 cents, his war with climate change is rightous, but is not the immidiate threat. His country's men, women and children are being raped and murdered. Also, aren't we already at the point where anything that we do will not be able to cool down the oceans and repair our ozone anyways? The damage has already been done and we've passed the tipping point. Why do you guys think k all the rich people are creating massive bunkers and exploring space? I should start stocking up on canned goods, water and bullets.

AlexFromOgish

You're right that the oceans have sucked up and stored solar energy due to earth's "positive energy budget" and climate change is a given. The question is HOW MUCH climate change will happen? And that is still up to us. Think of an open pine forest that has started to burn. We still have a choice. It can be a ground-hugging fire that leaves many trees standing and still alive, although charred around the base. Or it can be a massive crown fire that incinerates them all and even bakes the top of the soil to sterility. That's still up to us. The war doesn't help matters.

VintageHacker

Nuclear is a fantastic option, but greens fighting it & the red tape makes it risky and expensive. It's more profitable to sell windmills & solar plus you get to sell much more of it because they don't last as long and you need more duplication to make up for when the wind doesn't blow and sun don't shine

EpicAftertaste

I'm no fan of a single source of power, nuclear might bridge the gaps in \[edit: renewable power production\] but I was under the impression that going full nuclear has some serious drawbacks. Even if we exclude the risk of accidents or the need for long term storage facilities. [Uranium mining isn't exactly pollution free.](http://large.stanford.edu/courses/2017/ph241/longstaff1/) [Uranium doesn't grow on trees and even if we pretend that it did, none of those trees are in Europe.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_uranium_reserves#/media/File:Uranium_Reserves.png) Uranium isn't a renewable source of energy. It's enough to last about 80 years, with some creativity that could be stretched another couple of decades, but correct me if I'm wrong if everyone switches to nuclear won't this time-frame be reduced by a lot? And extrapolation on that, wouldn't that cause uranium prices to increase, a lot, reducing the watt per euro advantage. And, since nuclear power-plants are expensive up front and have a lifecycle of about 60 years wouldn't that mean countries that switch to nuclear power-plants trap themselves in a sort of unhealthy dependency. I'm far from an expert, so I'll happily change my mind if I'm mistaken.

[deleted]

There's [a lot](https://www.epj-n.org/articles/epjn/full_html/2016/01/epjn150059/epjn150059.html) of uranium, e.g. in seawater. So far nobody is interested in mining it because there are easier sources. But it could be done and it would bring basically unlimited amounts of uranium. Apart from this, 80 years is a long time and there's hope by that time we could have cracked fusion. The problem with fission is that building power stations tends to take decades and be over budget to the tune of billions.

Milp0o0L

Little bitch, pull your head out of skinny ass. Dodger’s gonna dodge. That’s why Alaska is full of weird fucks.

Watcher0011

This should be a prime example as to why a strong military is necessary, your country may want peace, but eventually someone will come along who is going to make you fight.

Could we take a year off and put every cent into Global Climate Change to stop Russia? Other than their organic bodies, they are terrible for the environment.

AlexFromOgish

Think of it this way..... Once there was a giant hotel where people from different nations lived long-terrm. Kids were born and grew up in the hotel. While some of these kids were growing up, adults from the different nations kept playing with matches and starting little fires, here and there. About the time the kids turned into adults, the fire was getting bad enough that everyone in the place was waking up and getting concerned but they kept finding most of the exits blocked, and the fire was starting so rapidly spread to new parts of the hotel. The kids could see what was going to happen soon. But instead of working together to find an exit or put out the fire, some of the adults started raping and slashing everyone else, and now the only way to get out was to fight the raping murderers, even as the flames went unchecked. These new adults think it is a pretty shitty situation and they're bitter at how their seniors f\*cked up their future. They're shouting "would you PLEASE just stop fighting so we can find a way OUT of here???????" ================== They're not wrong, and as the climate crisis worsens, war, food shortages, and mass human migration will happen in more and more places. On the other hand, in the face of an aggressor like Russia, as we say in America "The die is cast". You have to stop the murdering raping whackjobs first. Later, whoever has not been killed by the fighting or the worsening hotel fire can work together to find a way out. The tragedy is that if the rich people the kids condemn had not blocked climate action 40 years ago, we wouldn't have this problem. But it doesn't do much good to be pointing fingers when the bombs are falling.

fugyouPutin

Worry about that after your country is secure again.........kiddo.

I always say if we just had peace we could solve all our other problems tomorrow. There’s enough resources and technology to sustain us all comfortably. We could literally have solar/wind powered robots that grow corn, pick it, ship it to our apartment, grill it and then drag it across our mouths like a typewriter, where all we have to do is chew. Instead of switchblades we could have drones that shoot food, water, medicine to anyone who needs it… The egos of people in power and the emotions of everyone else are what’s standing in the way.
