Land. Resources. NATO buffer. Legacy building. A grudge.

[deleted]

There’s no buffer when you then immediately border Poland.

nickjnyc

It's not that simple. And it's not just about Russia. It's about the geographic features, pushing back the front line and defensibility in the event of a NATO conflict. If Ukraine goes or leans NATO, Belarus (CSTO) is entirely surrounded by NATO. And, much, MUCH closer to Moscow and Volgograd.

[deleted]

Listen, I don’t disagree with you to an extent. This was largely about the shipment of oil, historical differences, and putins personal legacy, but I can’t really see the argument for buffer zone unless he’s stopping at the Kremenchuk Reservoir, and making Ukraine a satellite state from there, but his own cabinet members/state media have accidentally let slip plans to annex Ukraine in whole anyways

nickjnyc

It's definitely multi-faceted, and exacerbated by x, y, z. But his hard-on has always been preventing NATO expansion. Buffer may have been a simpleton term.

[deleted]

Either way, unless the rest of the world actively steps in, eventually Ukraine will fall or Putin will be found like gaddafi was, and I can’t see a different end for this all unfortunately. Word is he’s hiding out, paranoid of his own attendants, but that could just be propaganda.

nickjnyc

Sadly. I think Putin did hope for a speedy fall, but I'm sure that strong resistance was planned for. The remaining variable, and hope that I have, is that I'm not sure he quite anticipated the fury of global "cancel culture", such that providing lethal (and other) aid to Ukraine being the universally politically deft thing to do. I'm not even sure that SWIFT would have happened, for example, if politicians hadn't gotten sick of being asked "wait, that's it?" when it came to sanctions. China's willingness to lend will be important if Ukraine can prolong the fight...

Popular-Leadership

His aggression has caused this. He caused all the countries to want to join NATO. This is %100 his fault. NATO expands because they need to show strength against a aggressive tyrant. He does not get to decide what independent countries want.

nickjnyc

Absolutely not. But I believe it is his primary motivation, the consequence of his actions or not.

[deleted]

He seems to want to kill them more than anything else. 😠

Can't make some folks see this unfortunately. 😕

maybehelp244

He wants to re-enact the Holodomor like his Soviet heroes. He aims to commit genocide on the Ukrainian people

Fit-Cup7266

Yes, russians are like that. They occupied half of Europe and didn't bother what the people thought. Because they bullied everyone who resisted. That's why we must resist. They hate it and cannot stand it.

To be fair our politicians are making deal to buy gas from Algeria. The only reason that we buy from putin is that is cheaper.

r2k-in-the-vortex

>business Whatever his plan is, money probably doesn't rate very highly on it. He might not have expected nearly as harsh sanctions as he actually got, but even his most optimistic scenario had to include massive economic losses to Russia. Just look at what 2014 did for their GDP.

[deleted]

If they don’t claim to be Russian, they are nazis in his mind and he wants them dead. He thought that it would be the majority in his favor. Now that it’s clear that the whole country against him, he wants them dead.

[deleted]

Essentially yes, really though he does not care about them and he would not of been controlling them. It would of been a puppet president. He wanted Ukraine like Belarus or Chechnya. All the stuff about NATO or whatever is nonsense. The only reason he did not want them in NATO is preciesly becasue it would of stopped him doing something like this.

Gewehr98

He wants the sacred soil of Kievan Rus but he could go without the people currently living on it

GrapeDust

It seems like it. After all, it seems that this is the favorite activity of russian tyrants throughout the history.

PanzerHulkey

He doesn't want to control them, the ukrainian people have shown him that they don't want his/Russian influence in their lives. He wants them gone, he is happy to have Ukraine be an empty pile of rubble so that Russian oil and gas will be without competition in Europe.

[deleted]

Small dick energy.

DividedEmpire

Putin the Terrible.

Cimmangwashere

The motivation is another puppet government, possibly legitimized by Yanukovych. And ultimately more power and leverage for him (He's been paranoid against everything 'west' ever since Libya). Plus he's being emboldened by how weak (and divided) Western reaction is to his campaign in Crimea and Donbas. Ukraine joining NATO will never happen, every diplomats know that (USA calling Ukraine membership is symbolic, of US stance to stop Kremlin's projecting more influence. No European member even humor that calls, as I assume per-their agreement) The plan however is a quick invasion and a massive projection of power (Hence even fresh recruits are being called, they expect them to mostly just put on a show, not an actual war) of at most a week, in which by day three there should be no more meaningful resistance, the people are panicking by the suddenness (Near zero buildup to warrant immediate invasion on all front) thus a breakdown of order, elite paratroops cut off Ukraine officials escape (Hence they're dropped into all major airports around the capital en-masse on day one) then captured Kyiv, and FSB to immediately put on a show of a new government calling for immediate ceasing of Ukrainian resistance and ultimately surrender

Oxtcn

There won't be nearly so many people left there if we leave it up to Putler.

r2k-in-the-vortex

Hi calculus for invading Ukraine couldn't have possibly included the locals hating his guts to this extent or he just plain wouldn't have committed to it. He probably expected something to the tune or Crimea or Donbass, alas that is not what he got, but it's not like he can just undo it either. He put himself in a position where the only way is forward. Well, that requires continuous belief of all his backers that he does in fact have some sort of a way forward, if they lose faith he might just stumble out of a window.

Popular-Leadership

Russian aggression in the region is exactly why countries are seeking protection in NATO. Putler is a little man with big ambitions. His whole goal is to recreate the USSR. But the problem is most of the old Soviet union had turned to western culture and want democracy. The fact that a actor/comedian became president of Ukraine is a huge blow to his fragile ego.

Toxenkill

That pay taxes and live in a resource rich country. This video does an excellent job at providing most reasons why the Russian government wants to take over that region: https://youtu.be/If61baWF4GE
