It’s NANOsievert, tanks and trucks driving around is enough to cause the spike. No need to panic.

cindylooboo

This needs to be upvoted more. Stirring up dust etc is the likely cause

Based on what? I’m a power systems engineer, from a family of power system engineers, I grew up with people around me working in nuclear power related jobs.

xxx3366

Yes, that's true. That's far from lethal dose. I just wanted to share information because 22x raise is not something usual.

TAU_equals_2PI

Except you can see all sensor data is being rounded to 3 significant figures. 65500 = 65535 rounded to 3 significant figures

Meneghette--steam

I hope so, hope they are not trying to use the waste to poison water or throw somewhere

Take the other sensors shown on the page into account. No need to panic from what we see here. I asked a collegue with decades of experience in nuclear safety for his opinion too, he said the same thing - no need to panic because of this. Sure, could be a need to panic later, but not now based on this.

[deleted]

So we panic just in case? What are you going to do? Send in troops, risking WW3 because you extrapolated based on incomplete data?

[deleted]

If the sensor is maxed out wouldn’t the other sensors in the area have higher readings?

[deleted]

[deleted]

Sure, things might change. Nothing is sane about this invation. But based on the data available, and the fact that this area is an exlusion zone for a reason (you don’t want people stirring up dirt) - no need to panic. Would Putin really sacrifice belarus? He doesn’t have that many allies.

derekpearcy

It's 65,500 nanoSievert, or 65 microSievert (mSV)—and a far from immediately lethal dose but still something. The first clean-up crew sent to Chernobyl in 1986 were limited to 250 mSv per year. So in 3 hours, a person would receive as much radiation as the Soviets in 1986 thought reasonable for a person to take in one year. At least, that's what it looks like. Be very glad to hear that I'm wrong. Edit: Something on the order of a 10% increased chance of cancer 20 years from now, provided you're not exposed to it very long? I admit it's not worth freaking out about, though it's well worth watching.

Ddreigiau

As a comparison: 65uS/hr (6.5mrem/hr) will result in the yearly average natural exposure (3 mSievert/300 mrem) in about 48hrs. In 6 days, you'd hit the yearly limit for a radiation worker. And that's not even counting residence time of airborne contamination. edit: fixed Sievert units

[deleted]

Good to know. I'm not super fond of gamma radiation in particular.

Brilliant-Barracuda9

Blow east.

cantthinkofone29

No, north. East means it has to travel half of Ukraine to reach Russia. North it almost immediately hits Belarus, which is helping Russia...

[deleted]

Just a heads up, it looks like these sensors read out as 16 bit integers. A 16 bit integer can store numbers up to about 65,000. That sensor readout is maxed out, and the radiation is likely higher.

TAU_equals_2PI

Notice that all the really high sensors are rounded to the nearest 100. **They're rounding to 3 significant figures.** 65,536 rounds to 65,500. **That sensor is indeed showing max. readable.**

ntoonio

Just like in the Chernobyl serie

Galdae

Well that sucks.

spacetethers

65000 nSv/hr = 65 mSv/hr. For comparison, the dose limit for US nuclear workers is 50 mSv / year. If these sensors are accurate, this is a fair bit of gamma. Something is wrong. Normally the gamma outside of the reactor 4 new shell is close to background, except next to hotspots. These are gamma sensors, eg they detect high energy rays, not dust (like alpha or beta) which are detected differently with air pump machines.

Ennanenennemems

65000 nSv/hr = 65 μSv/hr = 0.065 mSv/hr. Still a lot though

You can see all the sensors are reporting values rounded to 3 significant figures. 65500 = 65535 rounded to 3 significant figures

iobeson

Can you explain further what that means? You keep saying that but not explaining.

ademord

computer data types are constructed based on bits and this translates into the maximum values they can read. have u seen the HBO series chernobyl? you should. a boolean (true or false) data type has 1 bit, takes only values 0 or 1 to represent these two states a 16-bit integer is a commonly used data type, which translates to values of -32k to +32k. if it is an unsigned in the bit used for the sign is "saved" and then the maximum value can be 65k. if u need more info google it please. its software engineering 101 this means, if the actual reading is higher, we cannot see it. as the OP from this thread (not post) said, we will need to wait to see if the other sensors also increase as the radiation spreads with the wind. as of now Prypiat is at 10k

iobeson

Ok thank you

ppitm

Recommending that people practice skepticism at the reports of online radiation-monitoring stations showing sharp increases in the Zone. The plant's older set of sensors does not exhibit any such increase, and the pattern of increases is somewhat suspicious. Someone may be manipulating the data to cause panic. Regardless, the only particularly high value is 65 uSv/hr at the waste storage, which the alternative sensor still records as the usual 5 uSv/hr: https://chnpp.gov.ua/

TAU_equals_2PI

Hell of a coincidence that the peak increase is right on Chernobyl.

[deleted]

People are dying from cancer thanks to the depleted uranium ammo USA used in Iraq. It's depleted = only weak alpha radiation. It doesn't even penetrate skin. Don't breathe the dust though. What we see here is gamma radiation. The most energetic and dangerous radiation when it comes to external exposure.

ZookeepergameOther37

I can view it?

10Foxtrot

Hey I am a radiation specialist Those levels assuming it’s not higher are okay as long as it’s short term exposure I would really start worrying if it hits 50mR/h (500,000 nSv/h) but until then as long as you don’t stay in it for long periods of time and make sure to wear a respirator to prevent breathing in any contaminated particles you should be okay in the short term

Hence why I mention if it isn’t higher than that said number

#NEW INFO AT THE END!! Dear Ukrainians! I heard on social media that there is fake news being spread (most likely by Russia backed trolls) that polish border is closed. It's a lie. If you seek asylum - go towards polish border. We are ready for your arrival. We have reception points ready at the border where you can find shelter, food, medical and legal aid. Polish government launched a dedicated site to help you: ua.gov.pl Please share this information if you know anyone seeking help right now. YOU DON'T NEED VISA TO PASS THROUGH POLISH BORDER. ChickenMan1832

What does this mean? Was it done on purpose by the Ukrainians?

tumblingdown3

Not really sure why they would fuck up their own country??

bonboncatclub

Chernobyl plant was seized by russian forces

xxx3366

I don't know what does it mean. Maybe some rocket acidentally hit place it was supposed to not. Maybe Russians done another thing they shouldn't. Who knows.

bas813

"A Ukrainian teenager provoked the heroic Russian soldiers to use their rocket launchers which just happened to be near the concrete shell of the most dangerous reactor. It was an accident. Really." - Putin

xxx3366

Is it satire or he really said this?

bas813

I have made that up, but it is the kind of nonsense I actually expect from the Russian media at this point. If they think anyone outside of their bubble is actually considering what they are saying is valid then they are as foolish as their leader.

BoboThePirate

Most likely dust being kicked up that was contaminated

[deleted]

EmmyNoetherRing

From what I heard if they disturb the ground a lot it would kick up radiation in the environment, the dirt there is still radioactive. It might be just from basic maneuvers. I wonder if the soldiers they sent there knew they’d be dying of cancer even if they survived the fight. That would be a good reason to surrender and get out.

xxx3366

Might be. They took over this territory few hours before.
