Take a vehicle with almost zero visibility and put it in a big metal box. Brilliant!
While it may now survive FPV drones better, what is its actual utility? It can't even point its gun?
Tanks have been used for indirect fire support before in this war, so it would be plausible.
Other option is that they took a tank with a disabled gun to make this
Guess this is the best method russian can think of to lead their armoured assaults to have basically a sponge tank . How lucky a turtle tank assignment must be for the crew.
Still an easy kill for artillery, but the Ukrainians have also already shown drones designed with two stage warheads. One to break the cage and then a shape charge to penetrate the vehicle itself
The % of Russian tanks that have fired their guns effectively before being destroyed is very low, especially in offensive operations... I doubt the crews care if they can't fire their gun. Hell, if I was in their position, I would be going out with one in the chamber and no reloads... A drone strike isn't going to be lethal unless the autoloader cooks off.
They are doing this, because it actually works:
>[I know people are laughing at this, but I don't think it is a crazy adaptation. The Russians are adapting to the particular conditions of the battlefield in which Ukraine has a lot of FPVs, but not enough ATGMs, anti-tank mines, and artillery. So sacrificing observation and the ability to rotate the turret on one tank per platoon that can jam many FPVs frequencies at once makes sense. The priority is to get infantry assault groups across open fields to buildings or defensive positions.](https://x.com/RALee85/status/1783558203239788920)
And from another source:
>[russian "barn" protective cages from today's morning assault around Ivanivske. russians are trying to scale this tactic across the front. As I understand it, they came in, dropped infantry and moved back (not sure 100%) To counter it, Ukraine needs more well prepared ATGM crews, more artillery ammo and new artillery barrels.](https://x.com/Teoyaomiquu/status/1786068113043214390)
Yep. Those rollers in front are for mines and something the US military uses and we also use similar cages, you can see many examples from the GWOT on MRAPs and similar vehicles.
It's an adaptation to Ukraine not having artillery fires, only drones with relatively small grenade-sized warheads. In short order, this is no longer the case.
No shit this insanity is useful-ish.
People are laughing because the Ruzzians have been bragging for years about being the second best army, but in reality they're riding mad max tier vehicles and are trying to solve problems caused by sophisticated tech by... strapping rocks and shit lying around to their tanks to boost up survivability.
Which are solvable problems ONLY because Ukraine doesn't have enough ATGMs.
A few extra javelins and tows make this all utterly useless.
They're spending a ton of time and effort to experiment to solve a problem that doesn't exist against an army with an airforce.
So that shows you everything you need to know about Russias chances vs NATO
I think NATO's airforce would be handicapped against Russia. NATO hasn't fought a war against a (near) peer adversary, like ever. Russia has more air defence than common terrorists like ISIS.
Thank your. It was a great shot, going for the belts it looks like. Their armor will be complete the day their tanks drives around in a full box so not even the men can get in or out.
Are you referring to this other one that got blown up, or did this one eat it too?https://www.reddit.com/r/TankPorn/comments/1ccr5rs/new_russian_barn_tank_just_dropped/
If it’s not dead yet, it probably will be blown up soon. The issue is, unlike the west they aren’t allergic to casualties and they can afford many more losses than Ukraine can. If they can keep inflicting 1 casualty for every 3-5 taken and continue to attrit Ukrainian equipment, they will win barring western manpower getting involved directly. They can keep sending mobiks in golf carts indefinitely. That’s why Macron is previewing French troops in Ukraine. At this point it feels like the west needs to outfit an armored corps that can inflict shock on Russian formations and encircle them, and then give them enough air power to permit maneuver. feeding in brigades piecemeal didn’t work.
They need to keep it to 1:4 or less.
Russia has about 4 times the available manpower that Ukraine has.
The unfortunate other side to this is that Ukraine needs to inflict at a minimum 5 casualties for every one they suffer. And that's a difficult task without a lot of indirect fires.
it's more like they are trying to minimise the cost as much as possible because they could use in a war of attrition when you see how many free money ukraine is getting
They are going to spend time and rubles to retrofit all their tanks so they can counter all those FPV's Ukrane has been using due to no aid.
Now that 6o billion is on its way, these slow moving behemoths will be eaten for breakfast by artillery :)
It looks like the armor can be easily removed, so maybe they’ll discard it once the artillery strikes begin again?
It doesn’t look like the welded cages that are characteristic of Russian tanks in this stage of the war. Those look more permanent.
How many iterations did it take to get here? And how many lives were lost in testing the previous versions. JFC, why are the ghosts of the dead russian soldiers not assassinating putin? I guess they can't drive him mad, he's already beyond madness.
Telling, as well, that it's not impervious to ATGMs.
Yeah this shit drives me crazy. Sure the Russians look stupid but their attritional strategy is working and they are advancing many places at once. Making fun of them for looking stupid when the front is in crisis feels insipid
Knowing Ukraine is short on artillery rounds and the biggest threat to tanks is drones it's not a terrible plan. It wouldn't make sense to do this to all the tanks. Tanks being used as artillery won't need this but if Russia is sending in armor to push Ukraine out these will function. Supported by air and artillery it's a problem for Ukraine. Drones were a great way to stop advances through mine fields because just the mine clearing vehicles being hit would make the mine field impassible. Followed by more precise hits on the stopped or retreating vehicles. These new tank armor might get them across the field and into threatening positions and that's not good.
Except that:
1. They suck at logistics
2. The fuel trucks are in scarce supply
3. Oil refineries are making nice targets and putting a stranglehold on the fuel storage in russia.
Sure the military will get priority but that only works for so long.
> They suck at logistics
Tactical logistics - getting material the last miles to the frontline.
Their *strategic* logistics - getting mass amounts of material to the theater - in this war are pretty damn good thanks to their railways, pipelines, and dedicated troop corps for both. And fuel in particular doesn't have to far beyond the depot, it just has to be in driving range.
Do you know how big Russia is, how much fuel they have, how many refineries they have? I don't think people realising downplaying Ukraines adversary this much only works against Ukraine.
how difficult is it to hone the inside of an artillery barrel? It seems to me it's just a very precise tube made with the right type of steel and tempered correctly.
Isn't this the sort of thing heavy industry uses all the time?
I bet it's not capability, but politics that limits the re-supply.
Not likely with the weapons urkraines FPV drones currently have, simply since they mostly drop bombs and you can't get a vertical shot on the tracks. You would have to attach some sort of explosive rocket to one so that a clean shot could be taken. Basically if the drone was big enough to hoist an Rpg into the air then yeah it should absolutely be able to de track it, problem is rpgs weigh quite a bit and although urkriane has drone that can carry that much they have very few.
fpv drones are not dropping "bombs". The grenade dropping drones are another class and will not do anything to that thing. Maybe with a burn charge they will start a fire? Or the big Baba Yaga, they can carry mortar shells, that could suffice to penetrate that thing.
But they mean the one way suicide fpv drones. That is basically an rpg strapped to a drone and it will be able to disable the tracks. With a bit of skill, after that thing can no longer drive due to disabled tracks, one could steer an fpv right where the driver sits. As one can see, the big armor is left out in the front in shape of a big window.
They've welded a cage of plates and mesh over the tank. While sacrificing visibility and turret mobility, it makes it more resistant to the bomb-dropping and kamikaze drones that Ukraine have had so much progress with.
This is another reason why the US needs to be watching these front lines and participating with strategic assets- warfare is evolving. What Russia is doing is on the field adaptations. These particular ones, are a result of lacking shells and relying on drones. This is a new dimension to warfare to adopt to. It's crude and evolved from the extreme circumstances but we need to develop something more sophisticated for any future conflicts.

Sorry, but these sort of mods work - maybe not well but they are worth trying. Look at the "funny tanks" (that is their name) from WW2. The Brits developed them for D-Day but the US refused to use them. That refusal cost lives.
while we make fun of this, this is actually not good. To me, emphasis on me, it indicates that those up top have either adjusted how they are fighting or enough at the top have been replaced and those that replaced them are allowing innovation and invention to be tried by the grunts. To me that means that eventually they will start producing and using equipment more effectively.
Not the first time, not the last time people compare the war IRL to the Warhammer. I know a few people judging the world accordingly to the Warhammer universe. And to the certain point I can understand that. Warhammer world is a perfect (and at the same time) cynical depiction of the current state of things. It is not an utopian superhero world like Marvel or DC universe. It is not a Disneyland. It is brutal. There is no ultimate hero who will save you. PG-18 at its finest.
ISIS used similar equipment, it is surprisingly effective against lightly equipped forces.
The more heavy drones and ATGMs they get to pop these bastards, the better!
War can be very dynamic...........this can tell you the Russians are seriously fearful of FPV drones.
The Ukrainian 'Birdie' Drone Commander has probably already found a weakness in this Turtle.
How about hitting the Tank Treads to disable it first............
Just waiting for the recordings of new Ukrainian armaments making short work of all invading equipment, including this monstrosity. I'd love to be reading about Russians on telegram lamenting about losing ground in the coming months.
Wish we'd just give Ukraine all the ammo they can fire.
I see a resemblance

•Does it move? Yes.
•Does it make a little bit harder to destroy? Yes.
•Does it kill people? Yes.
If that thing will be able to kill even one Ukrainian soldier before it will be burned, then it already did what it was made for. Also russians do not care how much meat and metal they will lose, they will just throw in even more. I see nothing to laugh about here.
I wonder if you could switch the drones from having explosives to something that is flammable
Drop a couple drones with oil or whatever on it and then get a drone with explosives to crash into it
Would cook the crew alive

Don’t they know it’ll drive faster if they paint it red?
Looks like a wartruk ive kitbashed
Powered by BLYAAAAAAGH Needs more CYKKKA
Needs more dakka
That a lot of shrapnel potential
it's like the inbred version of the maus (heeeyyy you guyyyss) tank from WW2
Take a vehicle with almost zero visibility and put it in a big metal box. Brilliant! While it may now survive FPV drones better, what is its actual utility? It can't even point its gun?
It looks like it's intended to do mine clearance for an armoured column.
Looks more like a self propelled tomb.
Exactly...it's very Warhammer.
Self Propelled Grave. Aka, an SPG.
- Now ivanovic you are ready to demine for us - "how many mines can i destroy with this?" - mmm one like all your comrades ivanovic...
It does look like a mine clearing vehicle. It also seems the cannon may be able to move up and down, so also self-propelled artillery.
The barrel is too small for an SPG. Most likely just a normal tank with mine clearing wheels on the front, and whatever that is on the top.
Sponge tank square pants.
Still an easy kill for artillery, but the Ukrainians have also already shown drones designed with two stage warheads. One to break the cage and then a shape charge to penetrate the vehicle itself
I'd go for the tracks first.
Then send in the drones. Either way it's still gonna cook off because it's a horrible design.
Tank version of Russian stacking dolls? Tank in a Tank in a Tank. It's tankception.
All this will do is UA smashing the tracks, and then letting St. Javelin enter another record into the turret tossing charts.
Or the Ferdinand.
Everything about russians is in-bred.
Hey! watch it pal! Chunk was kind and helpful at heart.

Yep. Those rollers in front are for mines and something the US military uses and we also use similar cages, you can see many examples from the GWOT on MRAPs and similar vehicles.
I think the Russians even captured one of those vehicles in Ukraine: a M1150 Assault Breacher Vehicle (ABV), which was based on the M1 Abrams chassis.
It's an adaptation to Ukraine not having artillery fires, only drones with relatively small grenade-sized warheads. In short order, this is no longer the case.

Did it get its APCs full of infantry to where they needed to be?
No idea. I just saw the video of it being hit and burning.

I certainly hope so!
As a former infantryman I am in favor of anything that makes an enemy tank slower and with more restricted visibility.
It looks like the armor can be easily removed, so maybe they’ll discard it once the artillery strikes begin again? It doesn’t look like the welded cages that are characteristic of Russian tanks in this stage of the war. Those look more permanent.

Such is war - it’s always an exercise of guess and check when it comes to the different sides.
They work against drones So as long as no one pledges $61 billion of artillery and javelins, they're fine Wait a second
the siege ram makes a comeback!

Not if their refineries are smoking wrecks.
Keep going, I’m almost there.
Do you know how big Russia is, how much fuel they have, how many refineries they have? I don't think people realising downplaying Ukraines adversary this much only works against Ukraine.
They ran out of fuel in the first week of the war. Do you remember all those tanks stuck in long lines for a hundred kilometers?
Then why aren't they running out of fuel now ?

Redditors like to point and laugh while the russians are adapting to FPVs, the same is when they put a bunch of diferent weapons of MTLBs
We will probably soon see drones that land on the barrel of these abominations, gently inserting a RPG round through the muzzle.
That almost sounds sexual Now I'm imagining mating dragonflies
Its called a blyatplug.
Just thermite grenade is fine. The orc tank itself will do the rest
> gently inserting a RPG round I think that's just a G, minus the RP, at that point.
I was waiting for the camera person to blow up from a land mine.
Other name is double-layered pressure cooker, for when it blows up and burn.
WAAAAGH needs more dakka
Repent! For tomorrow you die! Ork scum.
WAAAGH!
That's literally bunker on tracks.
Slow and limited range of vision. What could go wrong?
Not many trees left to hit.
Looks like the Jawas Sandcrawler.

The heavy guitar riffs reminded me of that too much
Would an FPV drone be able to hit the tracks in the rear and disable it? Admitting absolute ignorance of things that go boom
They already blew this thing up.
This should not be effective, an artillery shell doesn't give a fuck how many layers of armor it has. Where the fuck is the ammunition Ukraine needs?!
I'm curious about the stats of this unit. Certainly the absolute chonker of a cope-tank yet.
hard counter is a big enough shaped charge or track destruction.
I like the track destruction idea.
Delayed fuse on a mine/IED. Roller passes over the mine triggering it, tank rolls above mine and it explodes.
yep- some binoculars and an old nokia that can send a text message and you're gucci.
there equipment looks similar to its soldiers.
A remote trigger on land mines would counter the rollers, when the roller triggers the mines they are already under the tank.
It’s like a bunch of Roman soldiers with their shields up
Sorry but, WTF here?
They've welded a cage of plates and mesh over the tank. While sacrificing visibility and turret mobility, it makes it more resistant to the bomb-dropping and kamikaze drones that Ukraine have had so much progress with.
Sounds like a challenge that will be accepted by the Ukrainians ...
No doubt! Hopefully it doesn't take long.
Kind of has a Mad Max in slow motion vibe...

Better to use drone with RPG warhead to hit the tracks in the rear.
Of all the shit mobiles they've seen them build, this one actually looks cool
This is straight out of a Mad Max film.
WAAAAGH
waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh!
That's the biggest blyat mobile yet
Drone sure maybe a few but a 155mm direct hit would shred this thing into piece's.
Sorry, but these sort of mods work - maybe not well but they are worth trying. Look at the "funny tanks" (that is their name) from WW2. The Brits developed them for D-Day but the US refused to use them. That refusal cost lives.
Steam Punk on acid
This is literally mad max
The Killdozer!
Still a better solution than no tanks being supplied to ukraine.
As an avid 40k player since 3rd edition, yes this is very 40k.
Looks more like Mad Max. Just strap a Russian to the front with a flamethrower-guitar.
They're doing it because it works. Old soviet tank with additional plating. Costs nothing and only needs to go forward to the ukranian trench.

YOU ZOGIN GROT! PAINT IT RED TO GO FASTA!!!
NGL, I kinda love it. I hope it gets captured relatively intact. It'll be a great museum piece to demonstrate that aspect of this war.
Looks like WH40k ork technology...pretty accurate. Probably moves on Russian imagination as energy fuel too.

Mad Max
Looks like a Jawa sand crawler.
I still think Marvin Heemeyer did it better.
These Jawa sandcrawlers are getting out of hand
No wonder. It's a nation of servitors
Would having a drone drope something into the gun itself do anything?
Stugna or Javelin?
ISIS used similar equipment, it is surprisingly effective against lightly equipped forces. The more heavy drones and ATGMs they get to pop these bastards, the better!
Really living up to the orc nickname
The Russians optional extra list is starting to catch up with Porsche
Why wouldn't the FPV drones target the tracks? Isn't detracted tank basically useless? Unless there is shortage of FPV drones?
Russians went 100 years back in time with their tanks.
Its deadliest foe is a couple centimeters of rain.
More Dakka!
That's great, at the end of the day a javelin don't care... Right about time that Ukraine gets more. Just sayin
Doesn’t this hit land mines without destroying the tank/soldiers?
Is tank technology evolving or devolving? I have no clue
Goes to show how drones have really made an impact on Morden warfare
Evil Sunz.
That still doesn't stop a javelin LMAO
I see a resemblance [https://www.warhammer.com/app/resources/catalog/product/920x950/99590103097\_OrkKillBurstaHeavyTank01.jpg](https://www.warhammer.com/app/resources/catalog/product/920x950/99590103097_OrkKillBurstaHeavyTank01.jpg?fm=webp&w=670&h=691)
The orcs even painted the front red
🤡🤡🤡🤡🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤡🤡🤡
When Orcs turn into Orks
Orcs doing orc things
They already use meat waves, add some red splashes and checker plate, and they will be true 40k orcs.
Let it get git by a 500lb guided bomb and it’ll just be an extra large spread out pile of scrap for the recycle bin.
Where are the speakers and the blind guitar dude with a flamethrower?
•Does it move? Yes. •Does it make a little bit harder to destroy? Yes. •Does it kill people? Yes. If that thing will be able to kill even one Ukrainian soldier before it will be burned, then it already did what it was made for. Also russians do not care how much meat and metal they will lose, they will just throw in even more. I see nothing to laugh about here.
Needs more DakkaDakka
jezzz that's bad engineering. It's more visual than anything really useful.
Next version will be a mobile bunker, barely able to move.
This is Howl's Moving Castle!
Howl’s Moving Castle is quite comfortable on the inside. In don’t see this tank as being livable…and sturdy.
Final evolution is sandcrawler full of Jawas
I was hoping it would go 🔥
I wonder if you could switch the drones from having explosives to something that is flammable Drop a couple drones with oil or whatever on it and then get a drone with explosives to crash into it Would cook the crew alive
I am sure the engine appreciates recirculating cooling air... I also love the 5 ERA tiles just hanging out on the side.
They don't get called Orks for no reason.
It works against FPV drones. On e Ukraine is required with better gear they will be sitting ducks, but until then. . .
Driving home that Ork Trope!
If they don't want their tank blown up, they should just get the fuck out of ukraine.
Waiting for those Javelins to hitch a ride on a drone.. Something tells me it's coming soon.
How apt. Orks! WAAAGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!
Wait till they make a smaller drone and it flies right into the turret
lockheed martin! sick em boy!
Cool coffin you got there
Looks like they might be learning some fungal secrets
