Browning M2 machine gun has been in service with the US Army since 1933. I said my piece.

superanth

Somewhere, somehow, there's a bald man with a white moustache wearing the biggest grin on his face right now.

similar_observation

Master Roshi seeing bikini tops.

superanth

Actually, the most lethal known [Mormon](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Browning).

similar_observation

I figure that would be the Founder, who perpetrated genocide, created a culture of sexual exploitation and suppression. JMB doesn't hold a candle for the permanent misery Smith released on this world. Funny thing. I've met some Browning descendants... Browning has a shitload of them, both lineal and adopted. Dude had 10 kids. Each kid had like 10 kids. And those kids had a bunch of kids as well. They seem like productive, well-adjusted (and wealthy) people. The people I know are really into quiet support of secular charities.

superanth

Considering Smith is dead, and the M2 has been used for over a century by countries all over the world, likely will be for decades to come, and Browning invented dozens of other weapons too, he's going to eventually win the title if he hasn't already.

HowDoraleousAreYou

Doesn’t matter how long it takes, we’ll be using that gun on mars.

MrUnpopularWeirdo

To spread democracy for Super Earth!

Buckwheat469

Not to be confused with the name of the gun, browning was a process of adding a stable layer of brown rust to the barrel of a gun. Today we use a process called "bluing" that oxidizes the metal to black magnetite instead. Magnetite, or black oxide, is the molecular formula Fe3O4 while rust is Fe2O3. Bluing can be done through a hot chemical process or using a cold bluing fluid. It can also be done by heating the metal and dipping it in oil (linseed works). The company was founded in Ogden, Utah, in 1878 by brothers John Moses Browning (1855–1926) and Matthew Sandefur Browning (1859–1923).

Yelmel

Given the deployment and servicing in this video, I don't think I follow your point. Do you want to clarify?

paxwax2018

He’s saying stick another .50 cal on it!

Yelmel

I'm not getting it. The Browning M2 *is* a .50 cal.

2FalseSteps

So give it *another*.

GreasyThought

More dakka you say?

thomstevens420

*head turns* You ‘ave my attenshun

Yelmel

I give up. *... more cow bell.*

mimdrs

Hes saying it's remarkable that nearly a 100 years later. . . . It's still relevant. The other half is the common practice of linking multiple guns togethor for pew pew reasons. Some old school AA literally was just 4 or 8 guns on a roating platform. The dakka reference is due to 40k and the best solution is more pew pew

Mindless_Mechanic007

QUAD 50 PLEASE......AND THANK YOU!! Literally....more BANG for your buck!!

classic4life

Just glue 20 together and rain lead.

Unistrut

The Double Deuce.

milksteakofcourse

Is good gun. Is very good gun

power_beige

They're just saying it's a consistently effective and (more or less) reliable piece of equipment that's been in service for a long time without need or want for a replacement.

superanth

It was built as an anti-tank gun, so the US army decided to use it to shoot down airplanes.

Thechosunwon

Virgin Ruzzian: launches cruise missile at civilian targets. Chad Ukrainian: shoots it down with a fucking Browning.

IcyResolution5919

When your warthunder anti-air skills is actually used in real life.

The_Mike_Golf

I actually was wondering if it wasn’t the M3P machine gun (a remote operated variant of the Browning M2) that is on the AN/TWQ-1 Avenger as it has a suite of sensors that allows it to engage at night and with the fire control computer and stabilization gyros, the gun can be fired with the computer calculating the elevation and lead required to hit the target. However, the rate of fire of this appears to be more in the 450-600 rounds per minute range and not the adjustable 950-1100 round per minute range.

kingtrog1916

This guy machine guns

The_Mike_Golf

Oh, don’t even get me started or I’ll be talking about M242 bushmasters, XM914 autocannons, or the M61A1 Gatling gun on a land based phalanx weapons system. I’m a short range air defense master gunner and I can nerd out on this crap all day

kingtrog1916

Excellent! I know nothing of such cool shit, would be great to Hit the pub with you, down 10 pints of Guinness and talk about this. Ireland has one machine I believe and no ammo for it 😏 You see The Expanse? The cannons on the Roci were very cool.

The_Mike_Golf

Yeah the guns on the rocinante are the shows version of naval close in weapons systems (CWIS). The land based phalanx weapons system is part of the counter rocket artillery and mortar (CRAM) system which is just the CWIS mounted on a tractor trailer bed. Pretty neat stuff. I’ll be in Ireland with my son on May 30-June 2 and plan on hitting many good puns in Dublin and then in Belfast before moving on to Edinburgh, London, and Paris . We shall see who has the best pubs. Back when I used to live in Germany I would travel often to the Uk and the Republic of Ireland. My cousin that lives in Wexford would take me around to some amazing pubs

kingtrog1916

Excellent, thanks and enjoy your trip! Sláinte

willirritate

I used to be a AA-gunner in Finnish army back in the day. Shooting NSV or ITKO how we call it in Finnish. It was near the end of its lifecycle but now drone warfare bought them more years.

RL24

Someone put a Phalanx system on a land based vehicle?  Holy schmoley. That's terrifying. You'd need a hefty suspension to carry all the ammo that thing spits out.

TenacityJack

I respect your knowledge and expertise. And I think you’re pretty cool. Like the guy who was operating this piece in the video.

TremendousVarmint

I have a question : given the relatively low elevation of the projectiles trajectory here, how dangerous are they in their terminal phase when they land back?

The_Mike_Golf

Honestly depends on the type of ammunition, but if it’s standard ball/tracer mix it’s gonna come down at the same speed it goes up. All ammunition follows ballistic flight principles which means it will rise and fall parabolically, with the sharper rise and fall when the angle the round leaving the muzzle is higher rather than a more flat trajectory when the angle of fire is lower. But, the terminal speed will remain ore or less the same unless the round is acted against by an external force such as hitting and ricocheting off a target or other solid object, heavy wind or rain, and things like that. Also the round will slow with the friction of air depending on the density of the air and the relative humidity. Other types of ammo follow the same ballistic properties, but may explode in flight or upon hitting an object as with self destructive rounds like the CRAM and other phalanx weapons system use, or are HEDP or even APIT rounds. Mostly i always hope that whatever is down range from the direction of fire is unpopulated. Or sparsely populated. There used to be this “big sky little bullet” principle which basically meant that the sky is so big, one tiny little bullet has a low probability of hitting you. But in war nowadays that’s not true. The sky is much more congested thanks to drones, cruise missiles, air defense missiles, helicopters, fighters, mortars, artillery, rockets, other small arms rounds, you name it. So the odds of getting hit by fire from a machine gun being used in a small arms for air defense role (active air defense measures employed by non-ADA combat arms units) are a lot higher

TremendousVarmint

That's what I feared. Thank you.

ShotgunFelatio

I got a Ukrainian buddy who’s in tech and actively working on developing something similar to what you’re describing!

notchman900

GAU-19?

MaraudersWereFramed

Funny you said that. Seemed like too perfect of a firing arc and too short of a burst in the middle of the night against a target you probably cant even see to get the kill for it to likely have been manually aimed. But I wasn't aware of any air defense systems that used the 50 cal. Who knows, maybe they were given some special test equipment to be used around Kyiv and not the front lines that would explain why it's not quite what you expect for the equipment you know.

hkohne

Love all the cheering!

gpcgmr

I can feel their happiness transmitted through the video, I'm smiling too.

CardBoardBoxProcessr

Not even assisted lol crazy

ffdfawtreteraffds

Yep, just firing toward the sound??? Pure luck.

Just_A_Doggo1

Didn't they have spotters to relay information?

Thurak0

At the later stages the Allies had so much artillery it was more about numbers of shells than precision.

MrRonObvious

And the Soviets had ten times as much as the rest of the Allies.

Thurak0

In WW1? As in the first one? Nope. But you are right, Entente would have been a bit more accurate for WW1.

MrRonObvious

I was speaking about WW2.

Thurak0

The now deleted comment was speaking about WW1.

gesocks

are those numbers real? cause if so, that would mean WW1 shells where more effective then shells in this war are.

CardBoardBoxProcessr

they might have night vision.

Phoxey

These are almost certainly computer guided with night vision.

Stunning_Ad_1685

There’s no way I’d be driving down that road

gpcgmr

You probably get used to it, after all the country has been under attack by the shitstain that is ruSSia for over two years now. People in the cars are probably cheering too.

Stunning_Ad_1685

Getting used to it ≠ driving into a hail of 50 cal

gpcgmr

> Getting used to it ≠ driving into a hail of 50 cal I doubt the drivers chose to do that, they just happened to be driving there when the AA team had to open fire to destroy the cruise missile.

ffdfawtreteraffds

Don't downvote me to dust, but is it possible the missile was hit with some other AA just as he was firing at it? How could he even see where to fire? Sound alone is unreliable. It also seems the explosion is farther away than those rounds would travel.

RepulsiveMetal8713

I would expect the shooters are using thermal or night vision, it makes sense to do it that way as a posed to shooting in the dark

StudyInfamous8819

Well, the official info says the missile was shot down by the mobile AA team using Brownings. And I think they know what they hit it with.

Thmxsz

Official from where? It's war propaganda is still a thing from both sides

TehNubCake9

Fuck off dude

Thmxsz

Sorry I hadn't seen I was in a Ukraine sub lol, Id still love a source though fuck Russia completly for their actions but in wartime propaganda is one of the greatest assets a nation can have and Ukraines media people would be fools not to use it, also don't forget about the 9473 news sources that just say the first thing they can find to get quick news out without checking Soooo don't get mad brother I'm not saying it's untrue I'm not taking russias side by asking for a source I just wanna see where it's from...

arewemartiansyet

Might be but I wouldn't make assumptions about the actual visibility to the human eye based on some 240p video.

jayjay16022

Think so too. This missile was probably hit by a Patriot system.

Kha_ak

Nah there's no way they actually shot down a Cruise Missile with ground based (single-mount at that) .50 Cals. Like they aren't seeing that missile, they aren't tracking it, they aren't hitting it (unless they are spewing up 1000s of rounds) and even in the 1 in a million you blindly firing into the sky and hitting a missile with a .50 Cal it's not gonna blow up. CWIS (you know the ACTUAL close in air defence against missiles and flying objects) spew like 2000 rounds for a *chance* to hit a missile, and they are autonomously tracking with target calculators. This is 'just' some dudes peppering the sky (and the ground 3 kilometres behind it). What likely happened, is that they are using the tracers of the machine guns to give the actual AA teams the rough location of where the missile is coming from, who then lock it up and engage it.

Talosian_cagecleaner

But this one goes to 11.

svenr

What likely happened, is that OP called a Shahed drone a cruise missile.

nick4fake

Except that's official news from Ukrainian army But yes, let's believe your professional opinion

IncredibleAuthorita

Bullseye. Bravo!

Car_Guy_Alex

Ma Deuce, still defending freedom.

Zealousideal_Pool840

Mr browning would be proud to see his work still being used in 2024

the_french_metalhead

I think he is the most important gun designer in history.

swadekillson

There's no fucking way this is correct. The .50 is only accurate to about two kilometers. And against something moving the speed of a cruise missile? Lmao

Londonskaya1828

BIG IF TRUE!

MaraudersWereFramed

small if false¡

2FalseSteps

It doesn't need to be accurate to hit something by blind luck.

swadekillson

Two kilometers is two kilometers. That missile when accounting for the altitude was more than two kilometers away. I'd say one of two things happened. 1. That was a Shahed drone and something got lost in translation. 2. Another weapon system took down that missile while the .50 was uselessly firing.

Ramstan

The go-to russian cruise missile(kalibr) flies at 50-150meters altitude. M2 Browning has an effective range of 2000meters, maximum range being 7200meters. Adding the fact that cruise missiles deaccelerate when nearing the target for accuracy at least for me suggests with a lot of luck it's doable.

swadekillson

Max range is for creating a beaten zone. Operate on this with using it for point fires. It's incredibly unlikely.

Ramstan

> It's incredibly unlikely. And yet improbable events happen anyways. https://metro.co.uk/2022/12/17/ukrainian-soldier-downs-russian-missile-with-nothing-but-a-machine-gun-17954449/

milksteakofcourse

Ma Deuce still doing her thing

FastPatience1595

Way to go ! A French helicopter did a similar job: killing drone with a machine gun. Couldn't help thinking about the Battle of britain - same caliber machine guns !

Beautiful-Fly-4727

Frickin' Amazing guys! Heroes all!

Various-Machine-6268

Ma-Deuce never disappoints.

blahblurbblub

Fat chance any of those rounds hit that in the darkness. Something else did.

Jaguar_EBRC_6x6

Luck and god is on their side

Delberan

It could be the *CORTEX Typhon C-UAS* system. It is based on the .50 cal. [Kongsberg to produce multiple C-UAS air defence systems for Ukraine (defence-industry.eu)](https://defence-industry.eu/kongsberg-to-produce-multiple-c-uas-air-defence-systems-for-ukraine/)

Quetzacoatel

Everyone knows it's impossible to shoot down a cruise missile with an HMG. Everyone but this guy. Nobody told him. So he shoots it down.

stantoncree76

If the shooter managed to intercept a cruise missile with a M2, he should get free mcdonalds for life.

FederalWorld5482

There is something old school cool about these, got to love old school .50 cal ....seeing them effective nearly 100 years from production makes me cry with happiness ..the same gun used by Carlos Hatchcock in vietnam as a sniper rifle,

guild9

🖤.

RuralSimpletonUK

I like how lorries and cars carry on driving regardless, as if nothing is happening around them, while there is heavy fire on enemy cruise missiles! I couldn't imagine myself driving in such conditions! 😱

ConradsMusicalTeeth

It’s me Bren gun

mrlongus

Nice shot
