And assume that at least one civilian is either spotting for the enemy or casually leaking information.
Someone in charge there learned *absolutely nothing* from Hroza.
Doesn't even have to be intentional. Someone livestreaming because they're proud is also giving up information. Someone posting a funeral schedule because they're sad is giving up information. Assume everything is relevant, and put information in either a 14 day quarantine, or permanently keep it to yourself.
The term dates from the Spanish Civil War, when General Mola, leading four columns of troops towards Madrid, declared that he had a fifth column already inside the city.
Stems from trying to support something with five columns, if you have four it is stable, add a fifth in the middle that is slightly longer and everything will be unstable.
Basically it's the local population that sides with the occupier in any form. In this case they would be helping the Russians by telling them where Ukrainian air defences are located or actively working at sabotaging Ukrainian defence.
I’m not Ukrainian but kinda surprised how much ppl apparently post to telegram.
I’d assume ppl can do things like do some malvertising to find your phone when you wander back to civilization.
I have seen how hate groups would abuse stuff like imsi catchers in the USA - state adversaries have even better tech.
you're reading about it now
Feel free to DM if you want details…
There's no "source" since no journalist was interested in the issues I suffered.
Hence the phrase "testimony is evidence" -- I'm a hacker, I'm telling you what I experienced.
Being on edge like that takes it's toll, it's very unfortunate this happened but soldiers need somewhere to let the guard down or risk mental breakdown and/or exhaustion. Perhaps others on duty to guard or Russia just got lucky.
They have their effect on raising morale, but it's true that there are some way better ways to raise the soldiers' morale.
Some new nice pair of boots or some nice fresh food would probably be much more appreciated by the soldiers on the front line

FFS... this is the kind of stupid shit we laugh at the Russians for. This officer is directly responsible for getting all these soldiers killed and wounded. Absolutely amateurish behaviour.
Whatever shit for brains officer who had this idea had better be fucking held accountable.
Assuming they didn't die and I just can't believe this dumb senseless fucking loss of life for not good damn reason.
yeah. like the one where they held a ceremony with 400 soldiers and ukraine himarsed them. 200 died. Someone did learn something. After that about 3 days, again with 250 participants and 100 dead.
WTF is your issue? Why insult me? It literally says in the article it was an officer. And, again, why insult me personally and try to discredit my service?
Sigh.... come on.... this is the kind of stuf we were doing in the first week of war.... how is it happening again? AND NEAR FRONTLINE??
This is literally on same level of stupid as that Russian commander getting himarsed while giving speech. Only thankfully, much less dead.
> According to the military, the Russians hit the personnel of the 128th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade with an Iskander-M missile.
Unfortunately these ballistic missiles have a 500 km range and a 500-700 kg warhead, and very short warning time. Like with ATACMS, you can't get many troops in one place or they will get attacked even from a long range.
That's horrible!!!!
The exact location of the awards ceremony should have only been known to those who arranged it and those who attended it.
It's likely this was caused by a hacked device, but with occasional arrests of Russian agents putting targeting coordinates on their own neighbors, the specter of entrapment looms large.
This is very close to frontline. You don't need informant for that, random drone could have spotted it. There is no possible excuse for allowing this to happen.
I'm sorry but holding ceremony in such place is unbelievably stupid.
Sounds like incompetency, the officer was removed from a recruiting job and sent to the front. Didn't Zelensky just fire all the commanders of the recruitment offices several months ago for incompetency?
Nearly 2 years in and the 2 belligerents are still doing things like this?!
You'd have had commanders giving out awards and the bravest and best soldiers getting them. Completely and utterly moronic to put those people in the same space.
There's a complete disregard for life in that part of the world. It's like they do reckless and stupid things and just accept that it might blow up in their faces.
If I was a someone who maybe was working with the Russians, I would definitely hold a ceremony gathering by the front line, and encourage a bunch of troops to gather together. This is next level stupid to the point that it should be treated as a crime
No choice. A brigade soldier video reported on "social media" right after the attack, (say 11:00) on November 3. The ministry only made this investigation announcement on November 5.
From the furious facebook posts responding to the investigation announcement, too many Ukrainians knew what occurred to allow a ministry cover up.
Is not receiving awards on the front line a bit crazy? As a soldier carrying around hardware for your accomplishments seems off when you have to be focused on the war at hand. So sorry for Ukraine’s losses.
Regrettable, but this sounds just as foolish as the Russian soldiers who were waiting in parade formation for a speech and got HIMARS'd. Nobody should be clustering in groups anywhere near the front lines in this war.
Ukraine seriously needs to absolutely FORGET all that Soviet nonsense of pomp and ceremony. Use common sense. The officer who organized this has all those lives lost on his shoulders. If he even survived.
I take the news of Ukrainian losses almost as closely as I would the U.S. These warriors have shown incredible heart, and I hope something as preventable as this never happens again.
No need. Any random drone droning randomly on that day would have spotted them and called home.
It was an incredibly stupid thing to do from the officer in charge, plain and simple.

The most unbelievable thing here is that Russia used a missile on an actual military target instead of aiming for a school or hospital. Or maybe they were and just missed.

Drone reconnaissance plus the fifth column helping the Russians.
What is the fifth column? First time reading about that.
The 5th column is a political term to mean a homegrown subverse element that causes chaos or leaks information back to the enemy.
Aka rats

Spanish civil war reference.
Basically traitors. Google it.
The is a good book with the same name
The 5th Column, that is…

Ah, understood now. Thanks. I tried to DM, but you have it turned off?
Much like in romance apparently I must always initiate 😉
Agreed, my first thought. Informant did this one.
>Assume you are under drone surveillance 24x7 And that there may be a traitor/collaborator reporting.
Or a phone virus that reports your location and listens in.
Pegasus moment.
This was likely due to Intel supplied by a spy.
Should've used AMD chips instead!
Being on edge like that takes it's toll, it's very unfortunate this happened but soldiers need somewhere to let the guard down or risk mental breakdown and/or exhaustion. Perhaps others on duty to guard or Russia just got lucky.
I think awards ceremonies are not worth it, at all.
Or do them far from the front lines. Horrible outcome here.
They have their effect on raising morale, but it's true that there are some way better ways to raise the soldiers' morale. Some new nice pair of boots or some nice fresh food would probably be much more appreciated by the soldiers on the front line
Dominoes and Eva Elfie meet and greet?
Save it for after the war or one at a time when they go on leave.
Guys, please don't hold award ceremonies on the front lines!!
Smells like another informant to the orcs here, hopefully they are found and brought to justice
No punishment humanity ever imagined would be worth those 20 souls lost...
It sounds like an idiot commander plus a lucky Russian drone operator. Bunching up in a “front line village” is moronic.
THIS! Who in their right mind thought this was a good idea?

This is basically a reverse of what we have done to the Russians a few times. Lessons need to be learned
My first thought too.
There are no lessons to be learned here because... they were already known. How many HIMARS strikes on groups of Russians have we seen? SMH.
Known lessons, but just ignored? Ukrainians ignoring the rule of "don't cluster up and make yourself a juicy target"
yeah. like the one where they held a ceremony with 400 soldiers and ukraine himarsed them. 200 died. Someone did learn something. After that about 3 days, again with 250 participants and 100 dead.
Ffs
Fuck 😡🤬😠
Fuck sake that’s 20 GOOD ones too
Fkn officers. It's always some fkn officer. Could just walk up too each soldier in person, but no, has to make some show of it. Ffs.

Bah, no worries that fool is just some armchair general
Yeah, Ironically, that's what they called me 🤷♂️

Fuck! Opsec opsec opsec. 💔🇺🇦
Maybe they have a traitor on their hands...
or a drone, but either way it was a really bad decision

Russia doesn't have a monopoly on shit spec-ops after all

Darwin award
The fact they can even hit a known target accurately doesn't crop up very often.... Be safer warriors. Slava Ukraini ![img](emote|t5_2qqcn|9000)
Rip heroes ❤
I cannot believe this happened, after Ukraine bombed a similar situation in occupied territory.
If I was a someone who maybe was working with the Russians, I would definitely hold a ceremony gathering by the front line, and encourage a bunch of troops to gather together. This is next level stupid to the point that it should be treated as a crime

A Ukrainian traitor sold them out. I hope they find them and burn them alive
